We construct infinite sequences of pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms without fixed points and leaving invariant a sequence of orientable measured foliations on the same topological surface and the same stratum of the space of abelian differentials. The existence of such sequences show that all pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms fixing orientable measured foliations cannot be obtained by the Rauzy-Veech induction strategy.
We show that any pseudo-Anosov map that is a lift of pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of a nonorientable surface has vanishing SAF invariant. We also provide a criterion to certify that a pseudo-Anosov map is not such a lift.
We find the minimum dilatation of pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms that stabilize an orientable foliation on surfaces of genus three, four, or five, and provide a lower bound for genus six to eight. Our technique also simplifies Cho and Ham's proof of the least dilatation of pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms on a genus two surface. For genus g=2 to 5, the mimimum dilatation is the smallest Salem number for polynomials of degree 2g.
We prove that the dilatation of any pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism on a translation surface that belong to a hyperelliptic component is bounded from below uniformly by sqrt{2}. This is in contrast to Penner's asymptotic. Penner proved that the logarithm of the least dilatation of any pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism on a surface of genus g tends to zero at rate 1/g (as g goes to infinity). We also show that our uniform lower bound sqrt{2} is sharp. More precisely the least dilatation of a pseudo-Anosov on a genus g>1 translation surface in a hyperelliptic component belongs to the interval ]sqrt{2},sqr…
A filling curve $γ$ on a based surface $S$ determines a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism $P(γ)$ of $S$ via the process of "point-pushing along $γ$." We consider the relationship between the self-intersection number $i(γ)$ of $γ$ and the dilatation of $P(γ)$; our main result is that the dilatation is bounded between $(i(γ)+1)^{1/5}$ and $9^{i(γ)}$. We also bound the least dilatation of any pseudo-Anosov in the point-pushing subgroup of a closed surface and prove that this number tends to infinity with genus. Lastly, we investigate the minimal entropy of any pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism obtained by pu…
We describe a circle of ideas relating the dynamics of 2-dimensional homeomorphisms to that of 1-dimensional endomorphisms. This is used to introduce a new class of maps generalizing that of Thurston's pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms.
We introduce topological definitions of expansivity, shadowing, and chain recurrence for homeomorphisms. They generalize the usual definitions for metric spaces. We prove various theorems about topologically Anosov homeomorphisms (maps that are expansive and have the shadowing property) on noncompact and non-metrizable spaces that generalize theorems for such homeomorphisms on compact metric spaces. The main result is a generalization of Smale's spectral decomposition theorem to topologically Anosov homeomorphisms on first countable locally compact paracompact Hausdorff spaces.
Suppose $S$ is a surface of genus $\ge 2 $, $f: S \to S$ is a surface homeomorphism isotopic to a pseudo-Anosov map $α$ and suppose $\ti S$ is the universal cover of $S$ and $F$ and $A$ are lifts of $f$ and $α$ respectively. We show there is a semiconjugacy $Θ: \ti S \to \bar Ł^s \times \bar Ł^u$ from $F$ to $\bar A$, where $\bar Ł^s$ ($\bar Ł^u$) is the completion of the $R$-tree of leaves of the stable (resp. unstable) foliation for $A$ and $\bar A$ is the map induced by $A$. We also generalize a result of Markovich and show that for any $g \in Homeo(S)$ which commutes with $f$ and has ident…
We study the dynamics of Topologically Anosov homeomorphisms of non compact surfaces. In the case of surfaces of genus zero and finite type, we classify them. We prove that if $f:S \to S$, is a Topologically Anosov homeomorphism where $S$ is a non-compact surface of genus zero and finite type, then $S= \R ^ 2$ and $f$ is conjugate to a homothety or reverse homothety (depending on wether $f$ preserves or reverses orientation). A weaker version of this result was conjectured in a previous work.
We develop a thermodynamic formalism for a smooth realization of pseudo-Anosov surface homeomorphisms. In this realization, the singularities of the pseudo-Anosov map are assumed to be fixed, and the trajectories are slowed down so the differential is the identity at these points. Using Young towers, we prove existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states for geometric $t$-potentials. This family of equilibrium states includes a unique SRB measure and a measure of maximal entropy, the latter of which has exponential decay of correlations and the Central Limit Theorem.
For an $α$-expansive homeomorphism of a compact space we give an elementary proof of the following well-known result in topological dynamics: A sufficient condition for the homeomorphism to have the shadowing property is that it has the $α$-shadowing property for one-jump pseudo orbits (known as the local product structure property). The proof relies on a reformulation of the property of expansiveness in terms of the pseudo orbits of the system.
This paper deals with classifying the dynamics of {\it Topologically Anosov} plane homeomorphisms. We prove that a Topologically Anosov homeomorphism $f:\mathbb{R}^2 \to \mathbb{R}^2$ is conjugate to a homothety if it is the time one map of a flow. We also obtain results for the cases when the nonwandering set of $f$ reduces to a fixed point, or if there exists an open, connected, simply connected proper subset $U$ such that $U \subset \mathrm{Int}(\overline {f(U)})$, and such that $ \cup_{n\geq 0} f^n (U)= \mathbb{R}^2$. In the general case, we prove a structure theorem for the $α$-limits of …
This paper concerns a family of pseudo-Anosov braids with dilatations arbitrarily close to one. The associated graph maps and train tracks have stable "star-like" shapes, and the characteristic polynomials of their transition matrices form Salem-Boyd sequences. These examples show that the logarithms of least dilatations of pseudo-Anosov braids on $2g+1$ strands are bounded above by $\log(2 + \sqrt{3})/g$. It follows that the asymptotic behavior of least dilatations of pseudo-Anosov, hyperelliptic surface homeomorphisms is identical to that found by Penner for general surface homeomorphisms. T…
The theme of this paper is that algebraic complexity implies dynamical complexity for pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms of a closed surface S_g of genus g. Penner proved that the logarithm of the minimal dilatation for a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of S_g tends to zero at the rate 1/g. We consider here the smallest dilatation of any pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of S_g acting trivially on Gamma/Gamma_k, the quotient of Gamma = pi_1(S_g) by the k-th term of its lower central series, k > 0. In contrast to Penner's asymptotics, we prove that this minimal dilatation is bounded above and below, independen…
In this article we construct an expansive homeomorphism of a compact three-dimensional manifold with a fixed point whose local stable set is not locally connected. This homeomorphism is obtained as a topological perturbation of a quasi-Anosov diffeomorphism that is not Anosov.
We give explicit pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms with vanishing Sah-Arnoux-Fathi invariant. Any translation surface whose Veech group is commensurable to any of a large class of triangle groups is shown to have an affine pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of this type. We also apply a reduction to finite triangle groups and thereby show the existence of non-parabolic elements in the periodic field of certain translation surfaces.
Let $BS(1,n)= <a,b : a b a ^{-1} = b ^n>$ be the solvable Baumslag-Solitar group, where $n \geq 2$. We study representations of $BS(1, n)$ by homeomorphisms of closed surfaces with (pseudo-)Anosov elements. That is, we consider a closed surface $S$, and homeomorphisms $f, h: S \to S$ such that $h f h^{-1} = f^n$, for some $ n\geq 2$. It is known that $f$ (or some power of $f$) must be homotopic to the identity. Suppose that $h$ is pseudo-Anosov with stretch factor $λ>1$. We show that $<f,h>$ is not a faithful representation of $BS(1, n)$ if $λ> n$. Moreover, we show that there are no faithful …
We investigate a phenomenon observed by W. Thurston wherein one constructs a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism on the limit set of a certain lift of a piecewise-linear expanding interval map. We reconcile this construction with a special subclass of generalized pseudo-Anosovs, first defined by de Carvalho. From there we classify the circumstances under which this construction produces a pseudo-Anosov. As an application, we produce for each $g \geq 1$ a pseudo-Anosov $ϕ_g$ on the surface of genus $g$ that preserves an algebraically primitive translation structure and whose dilatation $λ_g$ is a Salem…
Let $f\colon M\to M$ be an expansive homeomorphism with dense topologically hyperbolic periodic points, $M$ a compact manifold. Then there is a local product structure in an open and dense subset of $M$. Moreover, if some topologically hyperbolic periodic point has codimension one, then this local product structure is uniform. In particular, we conclude that the homeomorphism is conjugated to a linear Anosov diffeomorphism of a torus.
We show that an orientable pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism has vanishing Sah-Arnoux-Fathi invariant if and only if the minimal polynomial of its dilatation is not reciprocal. We relate this to works of Margalit-Spallone and Birman, Brinkmann and Kawamuro. Mainly, we use Veech's construction of pseudo-Anosov maps to give explicit pseudo-Anosov maps of vanishing Sah-Arnoux-Fathi invariant. In particular, we give new infinite families of such maps in genus 3.
An infinite family of generalized pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms of the sphere S is constructed, and their invariant foliations and singular orbits are described explicitly by means of generalized train tracks. The complex strucure induced by the invariant foliations is described, and is shown to make S into a complex sphere. The generalized pseudo-Anosovs thus become quasiconformal automorphisms of the Riemann sphere, providing a complexification of the unimodal family which differs from that of the Fatou/Julia theory.
The dilatation of a pseudo-Anosov braid is a conjugacy invariant. In this paper, we study the dilatation of a special family of pseudo-Anosov braids. We prove an inductive formula to compute their dilatation, a monotonicity and an asymptotic behavior of the dilatation for this family of braids. We also give an example of a family of pseudo-Anosov braids with arbitrarily small dilatation such that the mapping torus obtained from such braid has 2 cusps and has an arbitrarily large volume.
We consider the hyperelliptic handlebody group on a closed surface of genus $g$. This is the subgroup of the mapping class group on a closed surface of genus $g$ consisting of isotopy classes of homeomorphisms on the surface that commute with some fixed hyperelliptic involution and that extend to homeomorphisms on the handlebody. We prove that the logarithm of the minimal dilatation (i.e, the minimal entropy) of all pseudo-Anosov elements in the hyperelliptic handlebody group of genus $g$ is comparable to $1/g$. This means that the asymptotic behavior of the minimal pseudo-Anosov dilatation of…
We first prove rigidity results for pseudo-Anosov flows in prototypes of toroidal 3-manifolds: we show that a pseudo-Anosov flow in a Seifert fibered manifold is up to finite covers topologically equivalent to a geodesic flow and we show that a pseudo-Anosov flow in a solv manifold is topologically equivalent to a suspension Anosov flow. Then we study the interaction of a general pseudo-Anosov flow with possible Seifert fibered pieces in the torus decomposition: if the fiber is associated with a periodic orbit of the flow, we show that there is a standard and very simple form for the flow in t…
A foliation is R-covered if the leaf space in the universal cover is homeomorphic to the real numbers. We show that, up to topological conjugacy, there are at most two pseudo-Anosov flows transverse to such a foliation. If there are two, then the foliation is weakly conjugate to the the stable foliation of an R-covered Anosov flow. The proof uses the universal circle to R-covered foliations.
In this paper, we give sufficient conditions for a Perron number, given as the leading eigenvalue of an aperiodic matrix, to be a pseudo-Anosov dilatation of a compact surface. We give an explicit construction of the surface and the map when the sufficient condition is met.
We will discuss theoretical and experimental results concerning comparison of entropy of pseudo-Anosov maps and volume of their mapping tori. Recent study of Weil-Petersson geometry of the Teichmüller space tells us that they admit linear inequalities for both sides under some bounded geometry condition. We construct a family of pseudo-Anosov maps which violates one side of inequalities under unbounded geometry setting, present an explicit bounding constant for a punctured torus, and provide several observations based on experiments.
The main result of this paper is a universal finiteness theorem for the set of all small dilatation pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms, ranging over all surfaces. More precisely, we consider pseudo-Anosovs F:S to S with |chi(S)| log(lambda(F)) bounded above by some constant, and we prove that, after puncturing the surfaces at the singular points of the stable foliations, the resulting set of mapping tori is finite. Said differently, there is a finite set of fibered hyperbolic 3-manifolds so that all small dilatation pseudo-Anosovs occur as the monodromy of a Dehn filling on one of the 3-manifolds in…
Let $F',F$ be any two closed orientable surfaces of genus $g'>g\ge 1$, and $f:F\to F$ be any pseudo-Anosov map. Then we can "extend" $f$ to be a pseudo-Anosov map $f':F'\to F'$ so that there is a fiber preserving degree one map $M(F',f')\to M(F,f)$ between the hyperbolic surface bundles. Moreover the extension $f'$ can be chosen so that the surface bundles $M(F',f')$ and $M(F,f)$ have the same first Betti numbers.
We establish bounds on the minimal asymptotic pseudo-Anosov translation lengths on the complex of curves of orientable surfaces. In particular, for a closed surface with genus $g \geqslant 2$, we show that there are positive constants $a_1 < a_2$ such that the minimal translation length is bounded below and above by $a_1/ g^2$ and $a_2/g^2$.
We show that a pseudo-Anosov map constructed as a product of the large power of Dehn twists of two filling curves always has a geodesic axis on the curve graph of the surface. We also obtain estimates of the stable translation length of a pseudo-Anosov map, when two filling curves are replaced by multicurves. Three main applications of our theorem are the following: (a) determining which word realizes the minimal translation length on the curve graph within a specific class of words, (b) giving a new class of pseudo-Anosov maps optimizing the ratio of stable translation lengths on the curve gr…
The minimum dilatation of pseudo-Anosov 5-braids is shown to be the largest zero $λ_5 \approx 1.72208$ of $x^4 - x^3 - x^2 - x + 1$ which is attained by $σ_1σ_2σ_3σ_4σ_1σ_2$.
Li-York theorem tells us that a period 3 orbit for a continuous map of the interval into itself implies the existence of a periodic orbit of every period. This paper concerns an analogue of the theorem for homeomorphisms of the 2-dimensional disk. In this case a periodic orbit is specified by a braid type and on the set of all braid types Boyland's dynamical partial order can be defined. We describe the partial order on a family of braids and show that a period 3 orbit of pseudo-Anosov braid type implies the Smale-horseshoe map which is a factor possessing complicated chaotic dynamics.
An algorithm is proposed that solves two decision problems for pseudo-Anosov elements in the mapping class group of a surface with at least one marked fixed point. The first problem is the root problem: decide if the element is a power and in this case compute the roots. The second problem is the symmetry problem: decide if the element commutes with a finite order element and in this case compute this element. The structure theorem on which this algorithm is based provides also a new solution to the conjugacy problem.
This note illustrates the strategy of our paper on piecewise affine surface homeomorphisms by giving a new proof of the finite multiplicity of the maximum entropy measure of Anosov diffeomorphisms (here on surfaces). This approach avoids the explicit construction of Markov partitions and will be applied elsewhere to some non-uniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms.
In this article we analyze totally periodic pseudo-Anosov flows in graph three manifolds. This means that in each Seifert fibered piece of the torus decomposition, the free homotopy class of regular fibers has a finite power which is also a finite power of the free homotopy class of a closed orbit of the flow. We show that each such flow is topologically equivalent to one of the model pseudo-Anosov flows which we constructed in a previous article. A model pseudo-Anosov flow is obtained by glueing standard neighborhoods of Birkhoff annuli and perhaps doing Dehn surgery on certain orbits. We als…
