V2. Major revision. Former Lemma 4.15 was incorrect, and consequently so were former Thms 4.8 and G. Former Thms A and B were incorrect in some dimensions, and are now subsumed into a corrected version of Thm A. The other main results (previous Thms C,D,E and F) remain unchanged. V2 includes new results (Thms B and E) on the Ric_k of non-simply connected manifolds and products of Lie groups
Positive $k^{\rm th}$-intermediate Ricci curvature on a Riemannian $n$-manifold, to be denoted by $\mathrm{Ric}_k > 0$, is a condition that interpolates between positive sectional and positive Ricci curvature (when $k =1$ and $k=n-1$ respectively). In this work, we produce many examples of manifolds of $\mathrm{Ric}_k > 0$ with $k$ small by examining symmetric and normal homogeneous spaces, along with certain metric deformations of fat homogeneous bundles. As a consequence, we show that every dimension $n\geq 7$ congruent to $3\,\mathrm{mod}\ 4$ supports infinitely many closed simply connected manifolds of pairwise distinct homotopy type, all of which admit homogeneous metrics of $\mathrm{Ric}_k > 0$ for some $k<n/2$. We also prove that each dimension $n\geq 4$ congruent to $0$ or $1\,\mathrm{mod}\ 4$ supports closed manifolds which carry metrics of $\mathrm{Ric}_k > 0$ with $k\leq n/2$, but do not admit metrics of positive sectional curvature.
We use a local argument to prove if an $r$-dimensional torus acts isometrically and effectively on a connected $n$-dimensional manifold which has positive $k^\mathrm{th}$-intermediate Ricci curvature at some point, then $r \leq \lfloor \frac{n+k}{2} \rfloor$. This symmetry rank bound generalizes those established by Grove and Searle for positive sectional curvature and Wilking for quasipositive curvature. As a consequence, we show that the symmetry rank bound in the Maximal Symmetry Rank Conjecture for manifolds of non-negative sectional curvature holds for those which also have positive inter…
The homogeneous affine surfaces have been classified by Opozda. They may be grouped into 3 families, which are not disjoint. The connections which arise as the Levi-Civita connection of a surface with a metric of constant Gauss curvature form one family; there are, however, two other families. For a surface in one of these other two families, we examine the Lie algebra of affine Killing vector fields and we give a complete classification of the homogeneous affine gradient Ricci solitons. The rank of the Ricci tensor plays a central role in our analysis.
We discuss the Ricci flow on homogeneous 4-manifolds. After classifying these manifolds, we note that there are families of initial metrics such that we can diagonalize them and the Ricci flow preserves the diagonalization. We analyze the long time behavior of these families. We find that if a solution exists for all time, then the flow exhibits a type III singularity in the sense of Hamilton.

We establish metrics of positive $2^\mathrm{nd}$-intermediate Ricci curvature, i.e. $\mathrm{Ric}_2>0$, on products of positively curved homogeneous spaces. Using these examples, we demonstrate that the Hopf conjectures, Petersen-Wilhelm conjecture, Berger fixed point theorem, and Hsiang-Kleiner theorem for positively curved manifolds do not hold in the $\mathrm{Ric}_2>0$ setting. These observations indicate that the class of manifolds with $\mathrm{Ric}_2>0$ is vastly different from the class of positively curved manifolds.
We study closed, simply connected manifolds with positive $2^\mathrm{nd}$-intermediate Ricci curvature and large symmetry rank. In odd dimensions, we show that they are spheres. In even dimensions other than $6$, we show that they must have positive Euler characteristic. Under stronger assumptions on the symmetry rank, we show that such even dimensional manifolds must have trivial odd degree integral cohomology, and if the second Betti number is no more than $1$, they are either spheres or complex projective spaces. In the process, we establish new tools for studying isometric actions on close…
We introduce a new technique to the study and identification of submanifolds of simply-connected symmetric spaces of compact type based upon an approach computing $k$-positive Ricci curvature of the ambient manifolds and using this information in order to determine how highly connected the embeddings are. This provides codimension ranges in which the Cartan type of submanifolds satisfying certain conditions which generalize being totally geodesic necessarily equals the one of the ambient manifold. Using results by Guijarro--Wilhelm our approach partly generalizes recent work by Berndt--Olmos o…
We numerically calculate Perelman's entropy for a variety of canonical metrics on $\mathbb{CP}^{1}$-bundles over products of Fano Kähler-Einstein manifolds. The metrics investigated are Einstein metrics, Kähler-Ricci solitons and quasi-Einstein metrics. The calculation of the entropy allows a rough picture of how the Ricci flow behaves on each of the manifolds in question.
Motivated and inspired by the recent work of Colding [5] and Colding-Minicozzi [6] we derive several families of monotonicity formulas for manifolds with nonnegative Bakry-Emery Ricci curvature, extending the formulas in [5, 6].
We generalize the circle bundle examples of ancient solutions of the Ricci flow discovered by Bakas, Kong, and Ni to a class of principal torus bundles over an arbitrary finite product of Fano Kähler-Einstein manifolds studied by Wang and Ziller in the context of Einstein geometry. As a result, continuous families of $κ$-collapsed and $κ$-noncollapsed ancient solutions of type I are obtained on circle bundles for all odd dimensions $\geq 7$. In dimension $7$ such examples moreover exist on pairs of homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic manifolds. Continuous families of $κ$-collapsed ancient solut…
We study the quasi-convergence equivalence of some families of metrics on locally homogeneous closed 4-manifolds with trivial isotropy group, and identify the dimension of each equivalence class under certain conditions.
We show that after forming a connected sum with a homotopy sphere, all (2j-1)-connected 2j-parallelisable manifolds in dimension 4j+1, j > 0, can be equipped with Riemannian metrics of 2-positive Ricci curvature. The condition of 2-positive Ricci curvature is defined to mean that the sum of the two smallest eigenvalues of the Ricci tensor is positive at every point. This result is a counterpart to a previous result of the authors concerning the existence of positive Ricci curvature on highly connected manifolds in dimensions 4j-1 for j > 1, and in dimensions 4j+1 for j > 0 with torsion-free co…
In this article, we produce infinite families of 4-manifolds with positive first betti numbers and meeting certain conditions on their homotopy and smooth types so as to conclude the non-vanishing of the stable cohomotopy Seiberg-Witten invariants of their connected sums. Elementary building blocks used in the earlier work of Ishida and Sasahira are shown to be included in our general construction scheme as well. We then use these families to construct the first examples of families of closed smooth 4-manifolds for which Gromov's simplicial volume is nontrivial, Perelman's lambda-bar invariant…
We construct uncountably many isoparametric families of hypersurfaces in Damek-Ricci spaces. We characterize those of them that have constant principal curvatures by means of the new concept of generalized Kahler angle. It follows that, in general, these examples are inhomogeneous and have nonconstant principal curvatures. We also find new cohomogeneity one actions on quaternionic hyperbolic spaces, and an isoparametric family of inhomogeneous hypersurfaces with constant principal curvatures in the Cayley hyperbolic plane.
In this paper we study a boundary value problem for the Ricci flow in the two dimensional ball endowed with a rotationally symmetric metric. We show short and long time existence results. We construct families of metrics for which the flow uniformizes the curvature along a sequence of times. Finally we show that if the initial metric has positive Gaussian curvature and the boundary positive geodesic curvature then the flow uniformizes de curvature along a sequence of times.
We show that any closed biquotient with finite fundamental group admits metrics of positive Ricci curvature. Also, let M be a closed manifold on which a compact Lie group G acts with cohomogeneity one, and let L be a closed subgroup of G which acts freely on M. We show that the quotient N := M/L carries metrics of nonnegative Ricci and almost nonnegative sectional curvature. Moreover, if N has finite fundamental group, then N admits also metrics of positive Ricci curvature. Particular examples include infinite families of simply connected manifolds with the rational cohomology rings and integr…
Let $π:\mathbb{C}^n\times\mathbb{C}\rightarrow\mathbb{C}$ be the projection map onto the second factor and let $D$ be a domain in $\mathbb{C}^{n+1}$ such that for $y\inπ(D)$, every fiber $D_y:=D\capπ^{-1}(y)$ is a smoothly bounded strongly pseudoconvex domain in $\mathbb{C}^n$ and is diffeomorphic to each other. By Chau's theorem, the Kähler-Ricci flow has a long time solution $ω_y(t)$ on each fiber $D_y$. This family of flows induces a smooth real (1,1)-form $ω(t)$ on the total space $D$ whose restriction to the fiber $D_y$ satisfies $ω(t)\vert_{D_y}=ω_y(t)$. In this paper, we prove that $ω(t…
The twistor space of self-dual positive Einstein manifolds naturally admits two 1-parameter families of Riemannian metrics, one is the family of canonical deformation metrics and the other is the family introduced by B. Chow and D. Yang in 1989. The purpose of this paper is to compare these two families. In particular we compare the Ricci tensor and the behavior under the Ricci flow of these families. As an application, we propose a new proof to the fact that a locally irreducible self-dual positive Einstein 4-manifold is isometric to either $S^4$ with a standard metric or $\PP^2(\C)$ with a F…
The goal of the paper is to give an optimal transport characterization of sectional curvature lower (and upper) bounds for smooth $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. More generally we characterize, via optimal transport, lower bounds on the so called $p$-Ricci curvature which corresponds to taking the trace of the Riemann curvature tensor on $p$-dimensional planes, $1\leq p\leq n$. Such characterization roughly consists on a convexity condition of the $p$-Renyi entropy along $L^{2}$-Wasserstein geodesics, where the role of reference measure is played by the $p$-dimensional Hausdorff measure.…
We construct quasi-Einstein metrics on some hypersurface families. The hypersurfaces are circle bundles over the product of Fano, Kähler-Einstein manifolds. The quasi-Einstein metrics are related to various gradient Kähler-Ricci solitons constructed by Dancer and Wang and some Hermitian, non-Kähler, Einstein metrics constructed by Wang and Wang on the same manifolds.
In this article, we introduce a $2$-parameter family of affine connections and derive the Ricci curvature. We first establish an integral Bochner technique. On one hand, this technique yields a new proof to our recent work in \cite{LX} for substatic manifolds. On the other hand, this technique leads to various geometric inequalities and eigenvalue estimates under a much more general Ricci curvature conditions. The new Ricci curvature condition interpolates between static Ricci tensor and $1$-Bakry-Emery Ricci, and also includes the conformal Ricci as an intermediate case.
We introduce the notions of `super-Ricci flows' and `Ricci flows' for time-dependent families of metric measure spaces $(X,d_t,m_t)_{t\in I}$. The former property is proven to be stable under suitable space-time versions of mGH-convergence. Uniformly bounded families of super-Ricci flows are compact. In the spirit of the synthetic lower Ricci bounds of Lott-Sturm-Villani for static metric measure spaces, the defining property for super-Ricci flows is the `dynamic convexity' of the Boltzmann entropy ${\mathrm Ent}(.|m_t)$ regarded as a functions on the time-dependent geodesic space $({\mathcal …
We exhibit families of Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on K3 surfaces which collapse to an interval, with Tian-Yau and Taub-NUT metrics occurring as bubbles. There is a corresponding continuous surjective map from the K3 surface to the interval, with regular fibers diffeomorphic to either 3-tori or Heisenberg nilmanifolds.
We give an optimal estimate for the norm of any submanifold's second fundamental form in terms of its focal radius and the lower sectional curvature bound of the ambient manifold. This is a special case of a similar theorem for intermediate Ricci curvature, and leads to a $C^{1,α}$ compactness result for submanifolds, as well as a "soul-type" structure theorem for manifolds with nonnegative $k^{th}$--intermediate Ricci curvature that have a closed submanifold with dimension $\geq k$ and infinite focal radius. To prove these results, we use the comparison lemma for Jacobi fields from arXiv:1603…
We introduce a combinatorial method to construct indefinite Ricci-flat metrics on nice nilpotent Lie groups. We prove that every nilpotent Lie group of dimension $\leq6$, every nice nilpotent Lie group of dimension $\leq7$ and every two-step nilpotent Lie group attached to a graph admits such a metric. We construct infinite families of Ricci-flat nilmanifolds associated to parabolic nilradicals in the simple Lie groups ${\rm SL}(n)$, ${\rm SO}(p,q)$, ${\rm Sp}(n,\mathbb R)$. Most of these metrics are shown not to be flat.
Given a compact Fano Kähler manifold (M,J) with a Kähler Ricci soliton g, we consider smooth families {J_t} of complex deformations of (M,J) which are invariant under the action of a maximal torus T in the full isometry group of (M,g). We prove that, under a certain condition on the spectrum of the Laplacian of g, there exists a smooth family of T-invariant Kähler Ricci solitons g_t on every complex manifold (M, J_t) with J_t sufficiently close to J. The result extends a theorem by Koiso on complex deformations of Kähler Einstein manifolds.
This article grew out of the urge to realize explicit examples of solutions for the Ricci flow as families of isometrically embedded submanifolds, together with its Gromov-Hausdorff collapses. To this aim, we consider the Ricci flow of invariant metrics in a class of flag manifolds. On the one hand, we contrast with a previous result in literature by presenting entire flow lines of invariant metrics realized as orbits of a fixed representation. Indeed, we prove that the subset of realizable metrics has a global attractor with open interior, containing an expressive family of complete flow line…
We consider a modified Ricci flow equation whose stationary solutions include Einstein and Ricci soliton metrics, and we study the linear stability of those solutions relative to the flow. After deriving various criteria that imply linear stability, we turn our attention to left-invariant soliton metrics on (non-compact) simply connected solvable Lie groups and prove linear stability of many such metrics. These include an open set of two-step solvsolitons, all two-step nilsolitons, two infinite families of three-step solvable Einstein metrics, all nilsolitons of dimensions six or less, and all…
Using vertical and complete lifts, any left invariant Riemannian metric on a Lie group induces a left invariant Riemannian metric on the tangent Lie group. In the present article we study the Riemannian geometry of tangent bundle of two families of Lie groups. The first one is the family of special Lie groups considered by J. Milnor and the second one is the class of Lie groups with one-dimensional commutator groups. The Levi-Civita connection, sectional and Ricci curvatures have been investigated.
We give a simple proof of the local version of a result of R. Bryant, stating that any 3-dimensional Riemannian manifold can be isometrically embedded as a special Lagrangian submanifold in a Calabi-Yau manifold. We refine the theorem proving that a certain class of one-parameter families of metrics on a 3-torus can be isometrically embedded in a Calabi-Yau manifold as a one-parameter family of special Lagrangian submanifolds. We use our examples of one-parameter families to show that the semi-flat metric on the mirror manifold proposed be N. Hitchin is not necessarily Ricci-flat in dimension …
