In this paper we study a boundary value problem for the Ricci flow in the two dimensional ball endowed with a rotationally symmetric metric. We show short and long time existence results. We construct families of metrics for which the flow uniformizes the curvature along a sequence of times. Finally we show that if the initial metric has positive Gaussian curvature and the boundary positive geodesic curvature then the flow uniformizes de curvature along a sequence of times.
We construct a rotationally invariant Ricci flow through surgery starting at any closed rotationally invariant Riemannian manifold. We demonstrate that a sequence of such Ricci flows with surgery converges to a Ricci flow spacetime in the sense of [32]. Results of Bamler-Kleiner [8] and Haslhofer [29] then guarantee the uniqueness and stability of these spacetimes given initial data. We simplify aspects of this proof in our setting, and show that for rotationally invariant Ricci flows, the closeness of spacetimes can be measured by equivariant comparison maps. Finally we show that the blowup r…
In this note, using Calabi's method, we construct rotationally symmetric Kahler-Ricci solitons on the total space of direct sum of fixed hermitian line bundle and its projective compactification, where the curvature of hermitian line bundle is Kahler-Einstein. These examples generalize the construction of Koiso, Cao and Feldman-Ilmanen-Knopf.
We study the Ricci flow on $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, with $n\geq 2$, starting at some complete bounded curvature rotationally symmetric metric $g_{0}$. We first focus on the case where $(\mathbb{R}^{n+1},g_{0})$ does not contain minimal hyperspheres; we prove that if $g_{0}$ is asymptotic to a cylinder then the solution develops a Type-II singularity and converges to the Bryant soliton, while if the curvature of $g_{0}$ decays at infinity, then the solution is immortal. As a corollary, we prove a conjecture by Chow and Tian about Perelman's standard solutions. We then consider a class of asymptotica…
In this paper we study the gradient Ricci shrinking soliton equation on rotationally symmetric manifolds of dimension three and higher and prove that the only complete examples of such metrics on $S^n$, $\R{n}$ and $\R{}\times S^{n-1}$ are, respectively, the round, flat, and standard cylindrical metrics.
In previous work, Angenent, Isenberg, and Knopf created type-II Ricci flow neckpinch singularities. In this paper we construct solutions to Ricci flow whose initial data is the singular metric resulting from these singularities. We show in particular that the curvature decreases at the same rate at which it blew up. This is the first example of Ricci flow starting from a type-II singularity.
In this paper, we prove that any $κ$-noncollapsed gradient steady Ricci soliton with nonnegative curvature operator and horizontally $ε$-pinched Ricci curvature must be rotationally symmetric. As an application, we show that any $κ$-noncollapsed gradient steady Ricci soliton $(M^n, g,f)$ with nonnegative curvature operator must be rotationally symmetric if it admits a unique equilibrium point and its scalar curvature $R(x)$ satisfies $\lim_{r(x)\rightarrow\infty}R(x)f(x)=C_0\sup_{x\in M}R(x)$ with $C_0>\frac{n-2}{2}$.
We introduce a new curvature-pinching condition, which is weaker than the positive sectional curvature or PIC1, and then we prove several rigidity results for the rotationally symmetric solutions of steady Ricci solitons, i.e., the Bryant Ricci solitons.
We prove that any noncompact $κ$-noncollapsed steady Ricci soliton with nonnegative curvature operator must be rotationally symmetric if it has a linear curvature decay.
Let (M,g) be a steady gradient Ricci soliton of dimension n \geq 4 which has positive sectional curvature and is asymptotically cylindrical. Under these assumptions, we show that (M,g) is rotationally symmetric. In particular, our result applies to steady gradient Ricci solitons in dimension 4 which are κ-noncollapsed and have positive isotropic curvature.
We show that any locally conformally flat ancient solution to the Ricci flow must be rotationally symmetric. As a by-product, we prove that any locally conformally flat Ricci soliton is a gradient soliton in the shrinking and steady cases as well as in the expanding case, provided the soliton has nonnegative curvature.
We study the Ricci flow on $\mathbb{R}^{4}$ starting at an SU(2)-cohomogeneity 1 metric $g_{0}$ whose restriction to any hypersphere is a Berger metric. We prove that if $g_{0}$ has no necks and is bounded by a cylinder, then the solution develops a global Type-II singularity and converges to the Bryant soliton when suitably dilated at the origin. This is the first example in dimension $n > 3$ of a non-rotationally symmetric Type-II flow converging to a rotationally symmetric singularity model. Next, we show that if instead $g_{0}$ has no necks, its curvature decays and the Hopf fibers are not…
We consider compact noncollapsed ancient solutions to the 3-dimensional Ricci flow that are rotationally and reflection symmetric. We prove that these solutions are either the spheres or they all have unique asymptotic behavior as $t\to-\infty$ and we give their precise asymptotic description. This description applies in particular to the solution constructed by G.Perelman
In [4], we proved that every noncompact ancient $κ$-solution to the Ricci flow in dimension $3$ is either locally isometric to a family of shrinking cylinders, or isometric to the Bryant soliton. In the same paper, we announced that the same method implies that compact ancient $κ$-solutions are rotationally symmetric. In this note we provide the details of this argument.
In this note, we prove that a 3-dimensional steady Ricci soliton is rotationally symmetric if its scalar curvature $R(x)$ satisfies $$\frac{C_0^{-1}}{ρ(x)}\le R(x)\le \frac{C_0}{ρ(x)}$$ for some constant $C_0>0$, where $ρ(x)$ denotes the distance from a fixed point $x_0$. Our result doesn't assume that the soliton is $κ$-noncollapsed.
We show for a non homogeneous boundary value problem for the Ricci flow on the disk that when the initial metric has positive curvature and the boundary is convex then the initial metric is deformed, via the normalized flow and along sequences of times, to a metric of constant curvature and totally geodesic boundary. We also show that when the geodesic curvature of the boundary is nonpositive and the metric is rotationally symmetric, the normalized version of the flow exists for all time.
We consider smooth complete solutions to Ricci flow with bounded curvature on manifolds without boundary in dimension three. Assuming an open ball at time zero of radius one has curvature bounded from below by -1, then we prove estimates which show that compactly contained subregions of this ball will be smoothed out by the Ricci flow for a short but well defined time interval. The estimates we obtain depend only on the initial volume of the ball and the distance from the compact region to the boundary of the initial ball. Versions of these estimates for balls of radius r follow using scaling …
The main aim of this paper is to study existence and stability properties of rotationally symmetric proper biharmonic maps between two $m$-dimensional models (in the sense of Greene and Wu). We obtain a complete classification of rotationally symmetric, proper biharmonic conformal diffeomorphisms in the special case that $m=4$ and the models have constant sectional curvature. Then, by introducing the Hamiltonian associated to this problem, we also obtain a complete description of conformal proper biharmonic solutions in the case that the domain model is ${\mathbb R}^4$. In the second part of t…
In earlier work, carrying out numerical simulations of the Ricci flow of families of rotationally symmetric geometries on $S3$, we have found strong support for the contention that (at least in the rotationally symmetric case) the Ricci flow for a ``critical'' initial geometry - one which is at the transition point between initial geometries (on $S^3$) whose volume-normalized Ricci flows develop a singular neck pinch, and other initial geometries whose volume normalized Ricci flows converge to a round sphere - evolves into a ``degenerate neck pinch.'' That is, we have seen in this earlier work…
In this paper, we construct smooth forward Ricci flow evolutions of singular initial metrics resulting from rotationally symmetric neckpinches on S^(n+1), without performing an intervening surgery. In the restrictive context of rotational symmetry, this construction gives evidence in favor of Perelman's hope for a "canonically defined Ricci flow through singularities".
The best known finite-time local Ricci flow singularity is the neckpinch, in which a proper subset of the manifold becomes geometrically close to a portion of a shrinking cylinder. In this paper, we prove precise asymptotics for rotationally symmetric Ricci flow neckpinches. We then compare these rigorous results with formal matched asymptotics for fully general neckpinch singularities.
Gu and Zhu have shown that Type-II Ricci flow singularities develop from nongeneric rotationally symmetric Riemannian metrics on $S^m$, for all $m\geq 3$. In this paper, we describe and provide plausibility arguments for a detailed asymptotic profile and rate of curvature blow-up that we predict such solutions exhibit.
We prove a so called $κ$ non-inflating property for Ricci flow, which provides an upper bound for volume ratio of geodesic balls over Euclidean ones, under an upper bound for scalar curvature. This result can be regarded as the opposite statement of Perelman's $κ$ non-collapsing property for Ricci flow. These two results together imply volume doubling property for Ricci flow without assuming Ricci curvature lower bound.
This is the second paper of two in a series under the same title ([CRX]); both study the quantitative volume space form rigidity conjecture: a closed $n$-manifold of Ricci curvature at least $(n-1)H$, $H=\pm 1$ or $0$ is diffeomorphic to a $H$-space form if for every ball of definite size on $M$, the lifting ball on the Riemannian universal covering space of the ball achieves an almost maximal volume, provided the diameter of $M$ is bounded for $H\ne 1$. In [CRX], we verified the conjecture for the case that $M$ or its Riemannian universal covering space $\tilde M$ is not collapsed for $H=1$ o…
We prove that the Ricci flow on CP^n blown-up at one point starting with any rotationally symmetric Kahler metric must develop Type I singularities. In particular, if the total volume does not go to zero at the singular time, the parabolic blow-up limit of the Type I Ricci flow along the exceptional divisor is a complete non-flat shrinking gradient Kahler-Ricci soliton on a complete Kahler manifold homeomorphic to C^n blown-up at one point.
We study "warped Berger" solutions $\big(\mc S^1\times\mc S^3,G(t)\big)$ of Ricci flow: generalized warped products with the metric induced on each fiber $\{s\}\times\mathrm{SU}(2)$ a left-invariant Berger metric. We prove that this structure is preserved by the flow, that these solutions develop finite-time neckpinch singularities, and that they asymptotically approach round product metrics in space-time neighborhoods of their singular sets, in precise senses. These are the first examples of Ricci flow solutions without rotational symmetry that become asymptotically rotationally symmetric loc…
Let $(M^n,g,\nabla f)$, $n\geq 3$, be an expanding gradient Ricci soliton with nonnegative sectional curvature whose asymptotic cone is isometric to $C(\mathbb{S}^{n-1}(c))$ where $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}(c)$ is the standard $(n-1)$-sphere of curvature $1/c^2$, with $c\in(0,1)$. We prove that if the convergence to the asymptotic cone is smooth, $(M^n,g,\nabla f)$ is rotationally symmetric. This is the expanding analogue of the Perelman conjecture on the Bryant soliton and this work is based on the proof by Brendle \cite{Bre-Rot-3d}. This has also been proved recently by Chodosh \cite{Cho-EGS}.
We first show that any $4$-dimensional non-Ricci-flat steady gradient Ricci soliton singularity model must satisfy $|Rm|\leq cR$ for some positive constant $c$. Then, we apply the Hamilton-Ivey estimate to prove a quantitative lower bound of the curvature operator for $4$-dimensional steady gradient solitons with linear scalar curvatrue decay and proper potential function. The technique is also used to establish a sufficient condition for a $3$-dimensional expanding gradient Ricci soliton to have positive curvature. This sufficient condition is satisfied by a large class of conical expanders. …
We compute the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of a geodesic ball in a rotationally symmetric model space in terms of the moment spectrum for the Brownian motion exit times from the ball. This expression implies an estimate as exact as you want for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of a geodesic ball in these rotationally symmetric spaces, including the real space forms of constant curvature. As an application of the model space theory we prove lower and upper bounds for the first Dirichlet eigenvalues of extrinsic metric balls in submanifolds of ambient Riemannian spaces which have model space contro…
Let (M,d) be a metric space. For 0<r<R, and p in M let G(p,r,R) be the group obtained by considering all loops based at p whose image is contained in the closed ball of radius r and identifying two loops if there is a homotopy betweeen them that is contained in the open ball of radius R. In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of the G(p,r,R) groups of complete open manifolds of nonnegative Ricci curvature. We also find relationships between the G(p,r,R) groups and tangent cones at infinity of a metric space and show that any tangent cone at infinity of a complete open manifold of nonne…
In this note we provide several lower bounds for the volume of a geodesic ball within the injectivity radius in a $3$-dimensional Riemannian manifold assuming only upper bounds for the Ricci curvature.
In this work, we are going to find sufficient conditions on the initial triaxial Bianchi IX metric on some 4-dimensional manifolds foliated by homogeneous S3 for a Type I singularity to occur when it is flowed under the Ricci flow. This work generalises the study on rotationally symmetric manifolds done by Angenent and Isenberg as well as the work of Isenberg, Knopf, and Sesum, in which they introduced some ansatz for the problem setup.
We prove that for any complete three-manifold with a lower Ricci curvature bound and a lower bound on the volume of balls of radius one, a solution to the Ricci flow exists for short time. Actually our proof also yields a (non-canonical) way to flow and regularize some interior region of a non-complete initial data satisfying the aformentioned bounds.
A consequence of the Cheeger-Gromoll splitting theorem states that for any open manifold $(M,x)$ of nonnegative Ricci curvature, if all the minimal geodesic loops at $x$ that represent elements of $π_1(M,x)$ are contained in a bounded ball, then $π_1(M,x)$ is virtually abelian. We generalize the above result: if these minimal representing geodesic loops of $π_1(M,x)$ escape from any bounded metric balls at a sublinear rate with respect to their lengths, then $π_1(M,x)$ is virtually abelian.
We show that if two gradient Ricci solitons are asymptotic along some end of each to the same regular cone, then the soliton metrics must be isometric on some neighborhoods of infinity of these ends. Our theorem imposes no restrictions on the behavior of the metrics off of the ends in question and in particular does not require their geodesic completeness. As an application, we prove that the only complete connected gradient shrinking Ricci soliton asymptotic to a rotationally symmetric cone is the Gaussian soliton on R^n.
A rigidity result for weakly asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds with lower bounds on Ricci curvature is proved without assuming that the manifolds are spin. The argument makes use of a quasi-local mass characterization of Euclidean balls from \cite{Miao} \cite{S_T} and eigenfunction compactification ideas from \cite{Qing}.
In this paper, we study $κ$-noncollapsed ancient solutions to the Ricci flow with nonnegative curvature operator in higher dimensions. We impose one further assumption: one of the asymptotic shrinking gradient Ricci solitons is the standard cylinder $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}\times\mathbb{R}$. By making use of the properties of such ancient solutions, we generalize part one of Brendle \cite{brendle2018ancient} to higher dimensions, that is, every noncompact $κ$-noncollapsed rotationally symmetric ancient solution to the Ricci flow with bounded positive curvature operator must be the Bryant soliton.
In this paper, we study the topology of complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds with asymptotically nonnegative Ricci curvature. We show that a complete noncompact manifold with asymptoticaly nonnegative Ricci curvature and sectional curvature decay at most quadratically is diffeomorphic to a Euclidean n-space R^n under some conditions on the density of rays starting from the base point p or on the volume growth of geodesic balls in M.
We determine the matrix of the balanced metric of the Siegel-Jacobi ball and its inverse. We calculate the scalar curvature, the Ricci form and the Laplace-Beltrami operator of this manifold. We discuss several geometric aspects related with Berezin quantization on the Siegel-Jacobi ball.
We prove that the space of smooth Riemannian metrics on the three-ball with non-negative Ricci curvature and strictly convex boundary is path connected; and, moreover, that the associated moduli space (i.e., modulo orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of the three-ball) is contractible. As an application, using results of Maximo, Nunes, and Smith [MNS13], we show the existence of properly embedded free boundary minimal annulus on any three-ball with non-negative Ricci curvature and strictly convex boundary.
Let $(M,g)$ be a compact manifold with Ricci curvature almost bounded from below and $π:\bar{M}\to M$ be a normal, Riemannian cover. We show that, for any nonnegative function $f$ on $M$, the means of $føπ$ on the geodesic balls of $\bar{M}$ are comparable to the mean of $f$ on $M$. Combined with logarithmic volume estimates, this implies bounds on several topological invariants (volume entropy, simplicial volume, first Betti number and presentations of the fundamental group) in Ricci curvature $L^p$-bounded from below.
Motivated by Perelman's Pseudo Locality Theorem for the Ricci flow, we prove that if a Riemannian manifold has Ricci curvature bounded below in a metric ball which moreover has almost maximal volume, then in a smaller ball (in a quantified sense) it holds an almost-euclidean isoperimetric inequality. The result is actually established in the more general framework of non-smooth spaces satisfying local Ricci curvature lower bounds in a synthetic sense via optimal transportation.
Given a Riemmanian manifold, we provide a new method to compute a sharp upper bound for the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian for the Dirichlet problem on a geodesic ball of radius less than the injectivity radius of the manifold. This upper bound is obtained by transforming the metric tensor into a rotationally symmetric metric tensor that preserves the area of the geodesic spheres. The provided upper bound can be computed using only the area function of the geodesic spheres contained in the geodesic ball and it is sharp in the sense that the first eigenvalue of geodesic ball coincides with o…
Let $(M^{n},g)$ be a complete Riemannian manifold. In this paper, we establish a space-time gradient estimates for positive solutions of nonlinear parabolic equations $$\partial_{t}u(x,t)=Δu(x,t)+a u(x,t)(\log u(x,t))^b + q(x,t)A(u(x,t)),$$ on geodesic balls $B(O,r)$ in $M$ with $0<r\leq r$ for $p>\frac{n}{2}$ when integral Ricci curvature $k(p,1)$ is small enough. By integrating the gradient estimates, we find the corresponding Harnack inequalities.
In each dimension $N\geq 3$ and for each real number $λ\geq 1$, we construct a family of complete rotationally symmetric solutions to Ricci flow on $\mathbb{R}^{N}$ which encounter a global singularity at a finite time $T$. The singularity forms arbitrarily slowly with the curvature blowing up arbitrarily fast at the rate $(T-t)^{-(λ+1)}$. Near the origin, blow-ups of such a solution converge uniformly to the Bryant soliton. Near spatial infinity, blow-ups of such a solution converge uniformly to the shrinking cylinder soliton. As an application of this result, we prove that there exist standa…
Suppose $M$ is a manifold with boundary. Choose a point $o\in\partial M$. We investigate the prescribed Ricci curvature equation $\Ric(G)=T$ in a neighborhood of $o$ under natural boundary conditions. The unknown $G$ here is a Riemannian metric. The letter $T$ in the right-hand side denotes a (0,2)-tensor. Our main theorems address the questions of the existence and the uniqueness of solutions. We explain, among other things, how these theorems may be used to study rotationally symmetric metrics near the boundary of a solid torus $\mathcal T$. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of the…
