The ergodic properties of two uncoupled oscillators, a horizontal and vertical one, residing in a class of non rectangular star-shaped polygons with only vertical and horizontal boundaries and impacting elastically from its boundaries are studied. We prove that the iso-energy level sets topology changes non-trivially; the flow on level sets is always conjugated to a translation flow on a translation surface, yet, for some segments of partial energies the genus of the surface is strictly larger than one. When at least one of the oscillators is un-harmonic, or when both are harmonic and non-resonant, we prove that for almost all partial energies, including the impacting ones, the flow on level sets is unique ergodic. When both oscillators are harmonic and resonant, we prove that there exist intervals of partial energies on which periodic ribbons and additional ergodic components co-exist. We prove that for almost all partial energies in such segments the motion is unique ergodic on the part of the level set that is not occupied by the periodic ribbons. This implies that ergodic averages project to piecewise smooth weighted averages in the configuration space.
We investigate uniform ergodic type theorems for additive and subadditive functions on a subshift over a finite alphabet. We show that every strictly ergodic subshift admits a uniform ergodic theorem for Banach-space-valued additive functions. We then give a necessary and sufficient condition on a minimal subshift to allow for a uniform subadditive ergodic theorem. This provides in particular a sufficient condition for unique ergodicity.
This paper is concerned with the concept of linear repetitivity in the theory of tilings. We prove a general uniform subadditive ergodic theorem for linearly repetitive tilings. This theorem unifies and extends various known (sub)additive ergodic theorems on tilings. The results of this paper can be applied in the study of both random operators and lattice gas models on tilings.
We consider multi-particle systems with linear deterministic hamiltonian dynamics. Besides Liouville measure it has continuum of invariant tori and thus continuum of invariant measures. But if one specified particle is subjected to a simple linear deterministic transformation (velocity flip) in random time moments, we prove convergence to Liouville measure for any initial state. For the proof it appeared necessary to study non-linear transformations on the energy surface.
This paper is concerned with uniform convergence in the multiplicative ergodic theorem on aperiodic subshifts. If such a subshift satisfies a certain condition, originally introduced by Boshernitzan, every locally constant SL(2,R)-valued cocycle is uniform. As a consequence, the corresponding Schrödinger operators exhibit Cantor spectrum of Lebesgue measure zero. An investigation of Boshernitzan's condition then shows that these results cover all earlier results of this type and, moreover, provide various new ones. In particular, Boshernitzan's condition is shown to hold for almost all circle …
We consider random fields indexed by finite subsets of an amenable discrete group, taking values in the Banach-space of bounded right-continuous functions. The field is assumed to be equivariant, local, coordinate-wise monotone, and almost additive, with finite range dependence. Using the theory of quasi-tilings we prove an uniform ergodic theorem, more precisely, that averages along a Foelner sequence converge uniformly to a limiting function. Moreover we give explicit error estimates for the approximation in the sup norm.
We consider smooth area-preserving flows (also known as locally Hamiltonian flows) on surfaces of genus $g\geq 1$ and study ergodic integrals of smooth observables along the flow trajectories. We show that these integrals display a \emph{power deviation spectrum} and describe the cocycles that lead the pure power behaviour, giving a new proof of results by Forni (Annals 2002) and Bufetov (Annals 2014) and generalizing them to observables which are non-zero at fixed points. This in particular completes the proof of the original formulation of the Kontsevitch-Zorich conjecture. Our proof is base…
We show uniform convergence of Wiener-Wintner ergodic averages for ergodic actions of (not necessarily countable) locally compact, second countable, abelian (LCA) groups. As a by-product, we obtain a finitary version of the van der Corput inequality for such groups.
We study the ergodicity of non-autonomous discrete dynamical systems with non-uniform expansion. As an application we get that any uniformly expanding finitely generated semigroup action of $C^{1+α}$ local diffeomorphisms of a compact manifold is ergodic with respect to the Lebesgue measure. Moreover, we will also prove that every exact non-uniform expandable finitely generated semigroup action of conformal $C^{1+α}$ local diffeomorphisms of a compact manifold is Lebesgue ergodic.
In this paper we consider a class of piecewise affine Hamiltonian vector fields whose orbits are piecewise straight lines. We give a first classification result of such systems and show that the orbit-structure of the flow of such a differential equation is surprisingly rich.
The paper provides a link between ergodic theory and symplectic topology. A classical notion of ergodic theory is a skew product map associated with a loop in a group of transformations. We study skew products which come from loops in the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of a symplectic manifold. Our main question is which homotopy classes of loops can be represented by strictly ergodic skew products. We prove an existence result, and find an obstruction which arises from Hofer's geometry on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms.
The classical theorem of Jewett and Krieger gives a strictly ergodic model for any ergodic measure preserving system. An extension of this result for non-ergodic systems was given many years ago by George Hansel. He constructed, for any measure preserving system, a strictly uniform model, i.e. a compact space which admits an upper semicontinuous decomposition into strictly ergodic models of the ergodic components of the measure. In this note we give a new proof of a stronger result by adding the condition of purity, which controls the set of ergodic measures that appear in the strictly uniform…
We study mean ergodicity in amenable operator semigroups and establish the connection to the convergence of strong and weak ergodic nets. We then use these results in order to show the convergence of uniform families of ergodic nets that appear in topological Wiener-Wintner theorems.
In this paper, we prove a criterion for the local ergodicity of non-uniformly hyperbolic symplectic maps with singularities. Our result is an extension of a theorem of Liverani and Wojtkowski.
Paper withdrawn; will be replaced by revised version containing application to lattice models as well. We study hierarchical properties of Sturmian words. These properties are similar to those of substitution dynamical systems. This approach allows one to carry over to Sturmian dynamical systems methods developed in the context of substitutions. For example, it allows for a very simple proof of a uniform ergodic type theorem for additive functions taking values in a Banach space. We then focus on establishing various versions of uniform subadditive ergodic type theorems. The main result states…
On the set of genotypes $Φ=\{1,...,m\}$ we introduce a binary relation generated by Volterra quadratic stochastic operator $V$ on $(m-1)$ dimensional simplex $S^{m-1}$ and prove that the operator $V$ be non-ergodic if either there exists a Hamiltonian cycle or one of the vertices $M_i=(δ_{1i},δ_{2i},...,δ_{mi})$ of the simplex $S^{m-1}$ is a source and restriction of $V$ to the invariant face $F_i=\{x\in S^{m-1}: x_i=0\}$ is non-ergodic. In this paper we prove this result for $m=2,3,4.$
A class of fast-slow Hamiltonian systems with potential $U_\varepsilon$ describing the interaction of non-ergodic fast and slow degrees of freedom is studied. The parameter $\varepsilon$ indicates the typical timescale ratio of the fast and slow degrees of freedom. It is known that the Hamiltonian system converges for $\varepsilon\to0$ to a homogenised Hamiltonian system. We study the situation where $\varepsilon$ is small but positive. First, we rigorously derive the second-order corrections to the homogenised (slow) degrees of freedom. They can be decomposed into explicitly given terms that …
We show that a $k$-linear pointwise ergodic theorem on an ergodic measure-preserving system implies a uniform $k$-linear nilsequence Wiener-Wintner theorem on that system. The assumption is known to hold for arbitrary systems and $k=2$ (due to Bourgain) and for distal systems and arbitrary $k$ (due to Huang, Shao, and Ye).
We examine some of the properties of uniformly rigid transformations, and analyze the compatibility of uniform rigidity and (measurable) weak mixing along with some of their asymptotic convergence properties. We show that on Cantor space, there does not exist a finite measure-preserving, totally ergodic, uniformly rigid transformation. We briefly discuss general group actions and show that (measurable) weak mixing and uniform rigidity can coexist in a more general setting.
We provide an explicit uniform bound on the local stability of ergodic averages in uniformly convex Banach spaces. Our result can also be viewed as a finitary version in the sense of T. Tao of the Mean Ergodic Theorem for such spaces and so generalizes similar results obtained for Hilbert spaces by Avigad, Gerhardy and Towsner (arXiv:0706.1512v2 [math.DS]) and T. Tao (arXiv:0707.1117v1 [math.DS]).
We define a notion of entropy for an infinite family $\mathcal{C}$ of measurable sets in a probability space. We show that the mean ergodic theorem holds uniformly for $\mathcal{C}$ under every ergodic transformation if and only if $\mathcal{C}$ has zero entropy. When the entropy of $\mathcal{C}$ is positive, we establish a strong converse showing that the uniform mean ergodic theorem fails generically in every isomorphism class, including the isomorphism classes of Bernoulli transformations. As a corollary of these results, we establish that every strong mixing transformation is uniformly str…
We study strictly ergodic Delone dynamical systems and prove an ergodic theorem for Banach space valued functions on the associated set of pattern classes. As an application, we prove existence of the integrated density of states in the sense of uniform convergence in distribution for the associated random operators.
In this work we obtain a new criterion to establish ergodicity and non-uniform hyperbolicity of smooth measures of diffeomorphisms. This method allows us to give a more accurate description of certain ergodic components. The use of this criterion in combination with topological devices such as blenders lets us obtain global ergodicity and abundance of non-zero Lyapunov exponents in some contexts. In the partial hyperbolicity context, we obtain that stably ergodic diffeomorphisms are C^1-dense among volume preserving partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with two-dimensional center bundle. This …
Power-law uniform (in the operator norm) convergence on vector subspaces with their own norms in von Neumann's ergodic theorem with continuous time is considered. All possible exponents of the considered power-law convergence are found; for each of these exponents, spectral criteria for such convergence are given and a complete description of all such subspaces is obtained. Uniform convergence over the entire space takes place only in trivial cases, which explains the interest in the uniform convergence just on subspaces. In addition, along the way, the old convergence rate estimates in the vo…
In this paper, we show that for several interesting systems beyond uniform hyperbolicity, any generic continuous function has a unique maximizing measure with zero entropy. In some cases, we also know that the maximizing measure has full support. These interesting systems including singular hyperbolic attractors, $C^\infty$ surface diffeomorphisms and diffeomorphisms away from homoclinic tangencies.
We prove that for a broad class of exact symplectic manifolds including ${\mathbb R}^{2m}$ the Hamiltonian flow on a regular compact energy level of an autonomous Hamiltonian cannot be uniquely ergodic. This is a consequence of the Weinstein conjecture and an observation that a Hamiltonian structure with non-vanishing self-linking number must have contact type. We apply these results to show that certain types of exact twisted geodesic flows cannot be uniquely ergodic.
We prove that ergodic measures on one-sided shift spaces are uniformly scaling in the sense of Gavish. That is, given a shift ergodic measure we prove that at almost every point the scenery distributions weakly converge to a common distribution on the space of measures. Moreover, we give an explicit description of the limiting distribution in terms of a `reverse Jacobian' function associated with the corresponding measure on the space of left infinite sequences.
Von Neumann's original proof of the ergodic theorem is revisited. A uniform convergence rate is established under the assumption that one can control the density of the spectrum of the underlying self-adjoint operator when restricted to suitable subspaces. Explicit rates are obtained when the bound is polynomial, with applications to the linear Schrödinger and wave equations. In particular, decay estimates for time-averages of solutions are shown.
We obtain estimates on the uniform convergence rate of the Birkhoff average of a continuous observable over torus translations and affine skew product toral transformations. The convergence rate depends explicitly on the modulus of continuity of the observable and on the arithmetic properties of the frequency defining the transformation. Furthermore, we show that for the one dimensional torus translation, these estimates are nearly optimal.
We prove that a rank one transformation satisfying a condition called restricted growth is a mixing transformation if and only if the spacer sequence for the transformation is uniformly ergodic. Uniform ergodicity is a generalization of the notion of ergodicity for sequences in the sense that the mean ergodic theorem holds for what we call dynamical sequences. In particular, Adams' class of staircase transformations and Ornstein's class constructed using ``random spacers'' have both restricted growth and uniformly ergodic spacer sequences.
We use techniques of proof mining to obtain a computable and uniform rate of metastability (in the sense of Tao) for the mean ergodic theorem for a finite number of commuting linear contractive operators on a uniformly convex Banach space.
In our earlier paper, a generalized Dobrushin ergodicity coefficient of Markov operators (acting on abstract state spaces) with respect to a projection $P$, has been introduced and studied. It turned out that the introduced coefficient was more effective than the usual ergodicity coefficient. In the present work, by means of a left consistent Markov projections and the generalized Dobrushin's ergodicity coefficient, we investigate uniform and weak $P$-ergodicities of non-homogeneous discrete Markov chains (NDMC) on abstract state spaces. It is easy to show that uniform $P$-ergodicity implies a…
We generalize the proof of Karamata's Theorem by the method of approximation by polynomials to the operator case. As a consequence, we offer a simple proof of \emph{uniform dual ergodicity} for a very large class of dynamical systems with infinite measure, and we obtain bounds on the convergence rate. In many cases of interest, including the Pomeau-Manneville family of intermittency maps, the estimates obtained through real Tauberian remainder theory are very weak. Building on the techniques of complex Tauberian remainder theory, we develop a method that provides \emph{second (and higher) orde…
We consider interval exchange transformations of periodic type and construct different classes of recurrent ergodic cocycles of dimension $\geq 1$ over this special class of IETs. Then using Poincaré sections we apply this construction to obtain recurrence and ergodicity for some smooth flows on non-compact manifolds which are extensions of multivalued Hamiltonian flows on compact surfaces.
Let $a_n$ be the random increasing sequence of natural numbers which takes each value independently with decreasing probability of order $n^{-α}$, $0 < α< 1/2$. We prove that, almost surely, for every measure-preserving system $(X,T)$ and every $f \in L^1(X)$ orthogonal to the invariant factor, the modulated, random averages \[ \sup_{b} \Big| \frac{1}{N} \sum_{n = 1}^N b(n) T^{a_{n}} f \Big| \] converge to $0$ pointwise almost everywhere, where the supremum is taken over a set of bounded functions with certain uniform approximation properties.
Consider a class of skew product transformations consisting of an ergodic or a periodic transformation on a probability space (M, B, m) in the base and a semigroup of transformations on another probability space (W,F,P) in the fibre. Under suitable mixing conditions for the fibre transformation, we show that the properties ergodicity, weakly mixing, and strongly mixing are passed on from the base transformation to the skew product (with respect to the product measure). We derive ergodic theorems with respect to the skew product on the product space. The main aim of this paper is to establish u…

We prove that any continuous and convex stationary ergodic Hamiltonian admits critical subsolutions, which are strict outside the random Aubry set. They make up, in addition, a dense subset of all critical subsolutions with respect to a suitable metric. If the Hamiltonian is additionally assumed of Tonelli type, then there exist strict subsolutions of class $\CC^{1,1}$ in $\R^N$. The proofs are based on the use of Lax--Oleinik semigroups and their regularizing properties in the stationary ergodic environment, as well as on a generalized notion of Aubry set.
We investigate some ergodic and spectral properties of general (discrete) $C^*$-dynamical systems $({\mathfrak A},Φ)$ made of a unital $C^*$-algebra and a multiplicative, identity-preserving $*$-map $Φ:{\mathfrak A}\to{\mathfrak A}$, particularising the situation when $({\mathfrak A},Φ)$ enjoys the property of unique ergodicity with respect to the fixed-point subalgebra. For $C^*$-dynamical systems enjoying or not the strong ergodic property mentioned above, we provide conditions on $λ$ in the unit circle $\{z\in{\mathbb C}\mid |z|=1\}$ and the corresponding eigenspace ${\mathfrak A}_λ\subset{…
In this paper we apply proof mining techniques to compute, in the setting of CAT$(κ)$ spaces (with $κ>0$), effective and highly uniform rates of asymptotic regularity and metastability for a nonlinear generalization of the ergodic averages, known as the Halpern iteration. In this way, we obtain a uniform quantitative version of a nonlinear extension of the classical von Neumann mean ergodic theorem.
Let $T$ be an ergodic measure-preserving transformation on a non-atomic probability space $(X,Σ,μ)$. We prove uniform extensions of the Wiener-Wintner theorem in two settings: For averages involving weights coming from Hardy field functions, $p$: \[ \{\frac{1}{N} \sum_{n\leq N} e(p(n)) T^{n}f(x) \} \] and for "twisted" polynomial ergodic averages: \[ \{\frac{1}{N} \sum_{n\leq N} e(n θ) T^{P(n)}f(x) \} \] for certain classes of badly approximable $θ\in [0,1]$. We also give an elementary proof that the above twisted polynomial averages converge pointwise $μ$-a.e. for $f \in L^p(X), \ p >1,$ and …
We present an extension of the ergodic, mixing, and Bernoulli levels of the ergodic hierarchy for statistical models on curved manifolds, making use of elements of the information geometry. This extension focuses on the notion of statistical independence between the microscopical variables of the system. Moreover, we establish an intimately relationship between statistical models and family of probability distributions belonging to the canonical ensemble, which for the case of the quadratic Hamiltonian systems provides a closed form for the correlations between the microvariables in terms of t…
In this paper, for a discontinuous skew-product transformation with the integrable observation function, we obtain uniform ergodic theorem and semi-uniform ergodic theorem. The main assumptions are that discontinuity sets of transformation and observation function are neglected in some measure-theoretical sense. The theorems extend the classical results which have been established for continuous dynamical systems or continuous observation functions. Meanwhile, on the torus $\mathbb{T}^{d}$ with special rotation, we prove the pointwise convergence of multiple ergodic average $\disp \f 1 N \sum_…
The concept of a uniform set is introduced for an ergodic, measure-preserving transformation on a non-atomic, infinite Lebesgue space. The uniform sets exist as much as they generate the underlying $σ$-algebra. This leads to the result that any ergodic, measure-preserving transformation on a non-atomic, infinite Lebesgue space is isomorphic to a minimal homeomorphism on a locally compact metric space which admits a unique, up to scaling, invariant Radon measure.
It is known that the Dobrushin's ergodicity coefficient is one of the effective tools to study a behavior of non-homogeneous Markov chains. In the present paper, we define such an ergodicity coefficient of a positive mapping defined on ordered Banach space with a base (OBSB), and study its properties. In terms of this coefficient we prove the equivalence uniform and weak ergodicities of homogeneous Markov chains. This extends earlier results obtained in case of von Neumann algebras. Such a result allowed to establish a category theorem for uniformly ergodic Markov operators. We find necessary …
