This paper is concerned with uniform convergence in the multiplicative ergodic theorem on aperiodic subshifts. If such a subshift satisfies a certain condition, originally introduced by Boshernitzan, every locally constant SL(2,R)-valued cocycle is uniform. As a consequence, the corresponding Schrödinger operators exhibit Cantor spectrum of Lebesgue measure zero.
An investigation of Boshernitzan's condition then shows that these results cover all earlier results of this type and, moreover, provide various new ones. In particular, Boshernitzan's condition is shown to hold for almost all circle maps and almost all Arnoux-Rauzy subshifts.
Boshernitzan found a decay condition on the measure of cylinder sets that implies unique ergodicity for minimal subshifts. Interest in the properties of subshifts satisfying this condition has grown recently, due to a connection with the study of discrete Schrödinger operators. Of particular interest is the question of how restrictive Boshernitzan's condition is. While it implies zero topological entropy, our main theorem shows how to construct minimal subshifts satisfying the condition whose factor complexity grows faster than any pre-assigned subexponential rate. As an application, via a the…
In 1984 Boshernitzan proved an upper bound on the number of ergodic measures for a minimal subshift of linear block growth and asked if it could be lowered without further assumptions on the shift. We answer this question, showing that Boshernitzan's bound is sharp. We further prove that the same bound holds for the, a priori, larger set of nonatomic generic measures, and that this bound remains valid even if one drops the assumption of minimality. Applying these results to interval exchange transformations, we give an upper bound on the number of nonatomic generic measures of a minimal IET, a…
In 1985, Boshernitzan showed that a minimal (sub)shift satisfying a linear block growth condition must have a bounded number of ergodic probability measures. Recently, this bound was shown to be sharp through examples constructed by Cyr and Kra. In this paper, we show that under the stronger assumption of eventually constant growth, an improved bound exists. To this end, we introduce special Rauzy graphs. Variants of the well-known Rauzy graphs from symbolic dynamics, these graphs provide an explicit description of how a Rauzy graph for words of length n relates to the one for words of length …
If $\mathcal{A}$ is a finite set (alphabet), the shift dynamical system consists of the space $\mathcal{A}^{\mathbb{N}}$ of sequences with entries in $\mathcal{A}$, along with the left shift operator $S$. Closed $S$-invariant subsets are called subshifts and arise naturally as encodings of other systems. In this paper, we study the number of ergodic measures for transitive subshifts under a condition ("regular bispecial condition") on the possible extensions of words in the associated language. Our main result shows that under this condition, the subshift can support at most $\frac{K+1}{2}$ er…
A result for subadditive ergodic cocycles is proved that provides more delicate information than Kingman's subadditive ergodic theorem. As an application we deduce a multiplicative ergodic theorem generalizing an earlier result of Karlsson-Ledrappier, showing that the growth of a random product of semi-contractions is always directed by some horofunction. We discuss applications of this result to ergodic cocycles of bounded linear operators, holomorphic maps and topical operators, as well as a random mean ergodic theorem.
A volume growth-based proof of the Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem for Banach spaces is presented, following the approach of Ruelle for cocycles acting on a Hilbert space. As a consequence, we obtain a volume growth interpretation for the Lyapunov exponents of a Banach space cocycle.
The Oseledets Multiplicative Ergodic theorem is a basic result with numerous applications throughout dynamical systems. These notes provide an introduction to this theorem, as well as subsequent generalizations. They are based on lectures at summer schools in Brazil, France, and Russia.
The classical Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem (MET) of Oseledets is generalized here to cocycles taking values in a semi-finite von Neumann algebra. This allows for a continuous Lyapunov distribution.
We show that singular stochastic delay differential equations (SDDEs) induce cocycle maps on a field of Banach spaces. A general Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem on fields of Banach spaces is proved and applied to linear SDDEs. In Part II of this article, we use our results to prove a stable manifold theorem for non-linear singular SDDEs.
We show that, in the Teichmüller metric, "thin-framed triangles are thin"---that is, under suitable hypotheses, the variation of geodesics obeys a hyperbolic-like inequality. This theorem has applications to the study of random walks on Teichmüller space. In particular, an application is worked out for the action of the mapping class group: we show that geodesics track random walks sublinearly.
For linear random dynamical systems in a separable Banach space $X$, we derived a series of Krein-Rutman type Theorems with respect to co-invariant cone family with rank-$k$, which present a (quasi)-equivalence relation between the measurably co-invariant cone family and the measurably dominated splitting of $X$. Moreover, such (quasi)-equivalence relation turns out to be an equivalence relation whenever (i) $k=1$; or (ii) in the frame of the Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem with certain Lyapunov exponent being greater than the negative infinity. For the second case, we thoroughly investigated t…
We establish a "diagonal" ergodic theorem involving the additive and multiplicative groups of a countable field $K$ and, with the help of a new variant of Furstenberg's correspondence principle, prove that any "large" set in $K$ contains many configurations of the form $\{x+y,xy\}$. We also show that for any finite coloring of $K$ there are many $x,y\in K$ such that $x,x+y$ and $xy$ have the same color. Finally, by utilizing a finitistic version of our main ergodic theorem, we obtain combinatorial results pertaining to finite fields. In particular we obtain an alternative proof for a result ob…
We show that the cubic nonconventional ergodic averages of any order with a bounded multiplicative function weight converge almost surely to zero provided that the multiplicative function satisfies a strong Daboussi-Delange condition. We further obtain that the Cesàro mean of the self-correlations and some moving average of the self-correlations of such multiplicative functions converge to zero. Our proof gives, for any $N \geq 2$, $$\frac1{N}\sum_{m=1}^{N}\Big|\frac1{N}\sum_{n=1}^{N} \bnu(n) \bnu(n+m)\Big| \leq \frac{C}{\log(N)^ε},$$ and $$\frac1{N^2}\sum_{n,p=1}^{N}\Big|\frac1{N}\sum_{m=1}^{…
Given a n-dimensional lamination endowed with a Riemannian metric, we introduce the notion of a multiplicative cocycle of rank d, where n and d are arbitrary positive integers. The holonomy cocycle of a foliation and its exterior powers as well as its tensor powers provide examples of multiplicative cocycles. Next, we define the Lyapunov exponents of such a cocycle with respect to a harmonic probability measure directed by the lamination. We also prove an Oseledec multiplicative ergodic theorem in this context. This theorem implies the existence of an Oseledec decomposition almost everywhere w…
We study the asymptotic properties of the trajectories of a discrete-time random dynamical system in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space. Under some natural assumptions on the model, we establish a multiplica-tive ergodic theorem with an exponential rate of convergence. The assumptions are satisfied for a large class of parabolic PDEs, including the 2D Navier--Stokes and complex Ginzburg--Landau equations perturbed by a non-degenerate bounded random kick force. As a consequence of this er-godic theorem, we derive some new results on the statistical properties of the trajectories of the under…
In this article, we continue the structural study of factor maps betweeen symbolic dynamical systems and the relative thermodynamic formalism. Here, one is studying a factor map from a shift of finite type $X$ (equipped with a potential function) to a sofic shift $Z$, equipped with a shift-invariant measure $ν$. We study relative equilibrium states, that is shift-invariant measures on $X$ that push forward under the factor map to $ν$ which maximize the relative pressure: the relative entropy plus the integral of $ϕ$. In the non-relative case (where $Z$ is the one point shift and the factor map…
We study correlations of multiplicative functions taken along deterministic sequences and sequences that satisfy certain linear independence assumptions. The results obtained extend recent results of Tao and Teräväinen and results of the author. Our approach is to use tools from ergodic theory in order to effectively exploit feedback from analytic number theory. The results on deterministic sequences crucially use structural properties of measure preserving systems associated with bounded multiplicative functions that were recently obtained by the author and Host. The results on independent se…
We establish results with an arithmetic flavor that generalize the polynomial multidimensional Szemeredi theorem and related multiple recurrence and convergence results in ergodic theory. For instance, we show that in all these statements we can restrict the implicit parameter to those integers that have an even number of distinct prime factors, or satisfy any other congruence condition. In order to obtain these refinements we study the limiting behavior of some closely related multiple ergodic averages with weights given by appropriately chosen multiplicative functions. These averages are the…
Semi-invertible multiplicative ergodic theorems establish the existence of an Oseledets splitting for cocycles of non-invertible linear operators (such as transfer operators) over an invertible base. Using a constructive approach, we establish a semi-invertible multiplicative ergodic theorem that for the first time can be applied to the study of transfer operators associated to the composition of piecewise expanding interval maps randomly chosen from a set of cardinality of the continuum.
We consider sequences of Davenport type or Gelfond type and prove that sequences of Davenport exponent larger than $\frac{1}{2}$ are good sequences of weights for the ergodic theorem, and that the ergodic sums weighted by a sequence of strong Gelfond property is well controlled almost everywhere. We prove that for any $q$-multiplicative sequence, the Gelfond property implies the strong Gelfond property and that sequences realized by dynamical systems can be fully oscillating and have the Gelfond property.
We study Schrödinger operators on the real line whose potentials are generated by an underlying ergodic subshift over a finite alphabet and a rule that replaces symbols by compactly supported potential pieces. We first develop the standard theory that shows that the spectrum and the spectral type are almost surely constant, and that identifies the almost sure absolutely continuous spectrum with the essential closure of the set of energies with vanishing Lyapunov exponent. Using results of Damanik-Lenz and Klassert-Lenz-Stollmann, we also show that the spectrum is a Cantor set of zero Lebesgue …
It is shown that the cubic nonconventional ergodic averages of any order with a bounded aperiodic multiplicative function or von Mangoldt weights converge almost surely.
This report discusses recent results as well as new perspectives in the ergodic theory for Riemann surface laminations, with an emphasis on singular holomorphic foliations by curves. The central notions of these developments are leafwise Poincaré metric, directed positive harmonic currents, multiplicative cocycles and Lyapunov exponents. We deal with various ergodic theorems for such laminations: Random and Operator Ergodic Theorems, (Geometric) Birkhoff Ergodic Theorems, Oseledec Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem and Unique Ergodicity Theorems. Applications of these theorems are also given. In p…
Covariant Lyapunov vectors (CLVs) are intrinsic modes that describe long-term linear perturbations of solutions of dynamical systems. With recent advances in the context of semi-invertible multiplicative ergodic theorems, existence of CLVs has been proved for various infinite-dimensional scenarios. Possible applications include the derivation of coherent structures via transfer operators or the stability analysis of linear perturbations in models of increasingly higher resolutions. We generalize the concept of Ginelli's algorithm to compute CLVs in Hilbert spaces. Our main result is a converge…
The semi-invertible version of Oseledets' multiplicative ergodic theorem providing a decomposition of the underlying state space of a random linear dynamical system into fast and slow spaces is deduced for a strongly measurable cocycle on a separable Banach space. This work represents a significantly simplified means of obtaining the result, using measurable growth estimates on subspaces for linear operators combined with a modified version of Kingman's subadditive ergodic theorem.
We investigate some ergodic and spectral properties of general (discrete) $C^*$-dynamical systems $({\mathfrak A},Φ)$ made of a unital $C^*$-algebra and a multiplicative, identity-preserving $*$-map $Φ:{\mathfrak A}\to{\mathfrak A}$, particularising the situation when $({\mathfrak A},Φ)$ enjoys the property of unique ergodicity with respect to the fixed-point subalgebra. For $C^*$-dynamical systems enjoying or not the strong ergodic property mentioned above, we provide conditions on $λ$ in the unit circle $\{z\in{\mathbb C}\mid |z|=1\}$ and the corresponding eigenspace ${\mathfrak A}_λ\subset{…
It follows from Oseledec Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem (or Kingmans Subadditional Ergodic Theorem) that the Lyapunov-irregular set of points for which the Oseledec averages of a given continuous cocycle diverge has zero measure with respect to any invariant probability measure. In strong contrast, for any dynamical system f with exponential specification property and a Holder continuous matrix cocycle A, we show here that if there exist ergodic measures with different Lyapunov spectrum, then the Lyapunov-irregular set of A displays distributional chaos of type 1.
It follows from Oseledec Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem (or Kingman's Sub-additional Ergodic Theorem) that the set of `non-typical' points for which the Oseledec averages of a given continuous cocycle diverge has zero measure with respect to any invariant probability measure. In strong contrast, for any H$\ddot{o}$der continuous cocycles over hyperbolic systems, in this article we show that either all ergodic measures have same Maximal Lyapunov exponents or the set of Lyapunov `non-typical' points have full topological entropy and packing topological entropy. Moreover, we give an estimate of B…
We prove that the Birkhoff pointwise ergodic theorem and the Oseledets multiplicative ergodic theorem hold for every flat surface in almost every direction. The proofs rely on the strong law of large numbers, and on recent rigidity results for the action of the upper triangular subgroup of SL(2,R) on the moduli space of flat surfaces. Most of the results also use a theorem about continuity of splittings of the Kontsevich-Zorich cocycle recently proved by S. Filip.
We prove that for a minimal rotation T on a 2-step nilmanifold and any measure mu, the push-forward T^n(mu) of mu under T^n tends toward Haar measure if and only if mu projects to Haar measure on the maximal torus factor. For an arbitrary nilmanifold we get the same result along a sequence of uniform density 1. These results strengthen Parry's result that such systems are uniquely ergodic. Extending the work of Furstenberg, we prove an analogous theorem for a large class of iterated skew products. Additionally we prove a multiplicative ergodic theorem for functions taking values in the upper u…
Let $Q\rightarrow X$ be a continuous principal bundle whose group $G$ is reductive. A flow $ϕ$ of automorphisms of $Q$ endowed with an ergodic probability measure on the compact base space $X$ induces two decompositions of the flag bundles associated to $Q$. A continuous one given by the finest Morse decomposition and a measurable one furnished by the Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem. The second is contained in the first. In this paper we find necessary and sufficient conditions so that they coincide. The equality between the two decompositions implies continuity of the Lyapunov spectra under pe…
We study properties of arithmetic sets coming from multiplicative number theory and obtain applications in the theory of uniform distribution and ergodic theory. Our main theorem is a generalization of Kátai's orthogonality criterion. Here is a special case of this theorem: Let $a\colon\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{C}$ be a bounded sequence satisfying $$ \sum_{n\leq x} a(pn)\overline{a(qn)} = {\rm o}(x),~\text{for all distinct primes $p$ and $q$.} $$ Then for any multiplicative function $f$ and any $z\in\mathbb{C}$ the indicator function of the level set $E=\{n\in\mathbb{N}:f(n)=z\}$ satisfies $$ \sum_…
In 1968, V.I. Oseledets formulated the question of convergence in the Birkhoff theorem and the multiplicative ergodic theorem for measurable cocycles over flows under the condition of integrability for each individual t. A.M. Stepin and the author established (2016) the convergence along subsets of time of density 1. In this note, we show that moreover the convergence is fulfilled modulo time subsets of finite measure.
By establishing Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem for commutative transformations on a separable infinite dimensional Hilbert space, in this paper, we investigate Pesin's entropy formula and SRB measures of a finitely generated random transformations on such space via its commuting generators. Moreover, as an application, we give a formula of Friedland's entropy for certain $C^{2}$ $\mathbb{N}^2$-actions.
We prove an ergodic theorem for the rotation number of the composition of a sequence os stationary random homeomorphisms in $S^{1}$. In particular, the concept of rotation number of a matrix $g\in Gl^{+}(2,{\R})$ can be generalized to a product of a sequence of stationary random matrices in $Gl^{+}(2,{\R})$. In this particular case this result provides a counter-part of the Osseledec's multiplicative ergodic theorem which guarantees the existence of Lyapunov exponents. A random sampling theorem is then proved to show that the concept we propose is consistent by discretization in time with the …
We study the existence of various sign and value patterns in sequences defined by multiplicative functions or related objects. For any set $A$ whose indicator function is 'approximately multiplicative' and uniformly distributed on short intervals in a suitable sense, we show that the asymptotic density of the pattern $n+1\in A$, $n+2\in A$, $n+3\in A$ is positive, as long as $A$ has density greater than $\frac{1}{3}$. Using an inverse theorem for sumsets and some tools from ergodic theory, we also provide a theorem that deals with the critical case of $A$ having density exactly $\frac{1}{3}$, …
Let $a < b$ be multiplicatively independent integers, both at least $2$. Let $A,B$ be closed subsets of $[0,1]$ that are forward invariant under multiplication by $a$, $b$ respectively, and let $C := A\times B$. An old conjecture of Furstenberg asserted that any planar line $L$ not parallel to either axis must intersect $C$ in Hausdorff dimension at most $\max\{\dim C,1\} - 1$. Two recent works by Shmerkin and Wu have given two different proofs of this conjecture. This note provides a third proof. Like Wu's, it stays close to the ergodic theoretic machinery that Furstenberg introduced to study…
Using multiplicative ergodic theory we prove two formulae describing the relationships between different joint spectral radii for sets of bounded linear operators acting on a Banach space. In particular we recover a formula previously proved by V. S. Shulman and Yu. V. Turovski\uı using operator-theoretic ideas. As a byproduct of our method we answer a question of J. E. Cohen on the limiting behaviour of the spectral radius of a measurable matrix cocycle.
We establish new conditions for obtaining uniform bounds on the moments of discrete-time stochastic processes. Our results require a weak negative drift criterion along with a state-dependent restriction on the sizes of the one-step jumps of the processes. The state-dependent feature of the results make them suitable for a large class of multiplicative-noise processes. Under the additional assumption of Markovian property, new result on ergodicity has also been proved. There are several applications to iterative systems, control systems, and other dynamical systems with state-dependent multipl…
