We establish results with an arithmetic flavor that generalize the polynomial multidimensional Szemeredi theorem and related multiple recurrence and convergence results in ergodic theory. For instance, we show that in all these statements we can restrict the implicit parameter to those integers that have an even number of distinct prime factors, or satisfy any other congruence condition. In order to obtain these refinements we study the limiting behavior of some closely related multiple ergodic averages with weights given by appropriately chosen multiplicative functions. These averages are then analysed using a recent structural result for bounded multiplicative functions proved by the authors.
We prove that the divisor function $d(n)$ counting the number of divisors of the integer $n$, is a good weighting function for the pointwise ergodic theorem. For any measurable dynamical system $(X, {\mathcal A},ν,τ)$ and any $f\in L^p(ν)$, $p>1$, the limit $$ \lim_{n\to \infty}{1\over \sum_{k=1}^{n} d(k)} \sum_{k=1}^{n} d(k)f(τ^k x)$$ exists $ν$-almost everywhere. We also obtain similar results for other arithmetical functions, like $θ(n)$ function counting the number of squarefree divisors of $n$ and the generalized Euler totient function $J_s(n)$, $s>0$. We use Bourgain's method, namely the…
The main goal of this work is to establish quantitative nondivergence estimates for flows on homogeneous spaces of products of real and $p$-adic Lie groups. These results have applications both to ergodic theory and to Diophantine approximation. Namely, earlier results of Dani (finiteness of locally finite ergodic unipotent-invariant measures on real homogeneous spaces) and Kleinbock-Margulis (strong extremality of nondegenerate submanifolds of $\Bbb R^n$) are generalized to the $S$-arithmetic setting.
We consider Bourgain's ergodic theorem regarding arithmetic averages in the cases where quantitative mixing is present in the dynamical system. Focusing on the case of the horocyclic flow, those estimates allows us to bound from above the Hausdorff dimension of the exceptional set, providing evidence towards conjectures by Margulis,Shah and Sarnak regarding equidistribution of arithmetic averages in homogeneous spaces. We also prove the existence of a uniform upper bound for the Hausdorff dimension of the exceptional set which is independent from the spectral gap.
We study the arithmetic analogue of maximal functions on diagonal hypersurfaces. This paper is a natural step following the papers of \cite{Magyar_dyadic}, \cite{Magyar_ergodic} and \cite{MSW}. We combine more precise knowledge of oscillatory integrals and exponential sums to generalize the asymptotic formula in Waring's problem to an approximation formula for the fourier transform of the solution set of lattice points on hypersurfaces arising in Waring's problem and apply this result to arithmetic maximal functions and ergodic averages. In sufficiently large dimensions, the approximation form…
We prove Veech's conjecture on the equivalence of Sarnak's conjecture on Möbius orthogonality with a Kolmogorov type property of Furstenberg systems of the M\''obius function. This yields a combinatorial condition on the Möbius function itself which is equivalent to Sarnak's conjecture. As a matter of fact, our arguments remain valid in a larger context: we characterize all bounded arithmetic functions orthogonal to all topological systems whose all ergodic measures yield systems from a fixed characteristic class (zero entropy class is an example of such a characteristic class) with the charac…
It is known that hyperbolic dynamical systems admit a unique invariant probability measure with maximal entropy. We prove an effective version of this statement and use it to estimate an upper bound for Hausdorff dimension of exceptional sets arising from dynamics.
The following generalizations of the Chacon map are proposed: instead of classical constant spacer sequence $(0,1,0)$ let a sequence $(0,s_j,0)$ be one with unbounded $s_j$. (We mention also an analogue of the historical Chacon map with spacer sequences in the form $(0,s_j)$.) This narrow class of rank-one transformations may be abundant source of open questions. All such constructions have partial rigidity, but some other properties could be different. For root sequence, $ s_j= [\sqrt{j}]$, (or $ s_j= [\ln{j}]$) the corresponding action is rigid, moreover it possesses all polynomials in its w…
The regionally proximal relation of order $d$ along arithmetic progressions, namely ${\bf AP}^{[d]}$ for $d\in \N$, is introduced and investigated. It turns out that if $(X,T)$ is a topological dynamical system with ${\bf AP}^{[d]}=Δ$, then each ergodic measure of $(X,T)$ is isomorphic to a $d$-step pro-nilsystem, and thus $(X,T)$ has zero entropy. Moreover, it is shown that if $(X,T)$ is a strictly ergodic distal system with the property that the maximal topological and measurable $d$-step pro-nilsystems are isomorphic, then ${\bf AP}^{[d]}={\bf RP}^{[d]}$ for each $d\in {\mathbb N}$. It foll…
By using a combination of algebraic, geometric, and dynamical techniques, together with input from higher dimensional Diophantine approximation, we give a complete characterization of all linearly repetitive cut and project sets with cubical windows. We also prove that these are precisely the collection of such sets which satisfy subadditive ergodic theorems. The results are explicit enough to allow us to apply them to known classical models, and to construct linearly repetitive cut and project sets in all pairs of dimensions and codimensions in which they exist.
Magyar has shown that if $B \subset \mathbb{Z}^d$ has positive upper density $(d \geq 5)$, then the set of squared distances $\{ \|b_1-b_2 \|^2 \text{ }: \text{ } b_1,b_2 \in B \}$ contains an infinitely long arithmetic progression, whose period depends only on the upper density of $B$. We extend this result by showing that $B$ contains locally isometrically embedded copies of every tree with edge lengths in some given arithmetic progression (whose period depends only on the upper density of $B$ and the number of vertices of the sought tree). In particular, $B$ contains all chains of elements …
We explore the properties of non-piecewise syndetic sets with positive upper density, which we call "discordant", in countably infinite amenable (semi)groups. Sets of this kind are involved in many questions of Ramsey theory and manifest the difference in complexity between the classical van der Waerden's theorem and Szemerédi's theorem. We generalize and unify old constructions and obtain new results about these historically interesting sets. Along the way, we draw from various corners of mathematics, including classical Ramsey theory, ergodic theory, number theory, and topological and symbol…
We study correlation estimates of automatic sequences (that is, sequences computable by finite automata) with polynomial phases. As a consequence, we provide a new class of good weights for classical and polynomial ergodic theorems, not coming themselves from dynamical systems. We show that automatic sequences are good weights in $L^2$ for polynomial averages and totally ergodic systems. For totally balanced automatic sequences (i.e., sequences converging to zero in mean along arithmetic progressions) the pointwise weighted ergodic theorem in $L^1$ holds. Moreover, invertible automatic sequenc…
We will prove an S-arithmetic version of a theorem of Dani-Margulis on the convergence of ergodic averages of a given bounded continuous function, when the initial point is outside certain compact subsets of the singular set associated to the unipotent flow.
Szemerédi's Theorem states that a set of integers with positive upper density contains arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. Bergelson and Leibman generalized this, showing that sets of integers with positive upper density contain arbitrarily long polynomial configurations; Szemerédi's Theorem corresponds to the linear case of the polynomial theorem. We focus on the case farthest from the linear case, that of rationally independent polynomials. We derive results in ergodic theory and in combinatorics for rationally independent polynomials, showing that their behavior differs sharply from t…
We prove that a sumset of a TE subset of (\N) (these sets can be viewed as "aperiodic" sets) with a set of positive upper density intersects a set of values of any polynomial with integer coefficients., i.e. for any (A \subset \N ) a TE set, for any (p(n) \in \Z[n]: °{p(n)} > 0, p(n) \to_{n \to \infty} \infty ) and any subset (B \subset \N ) of positive upper density we have (R_p = A+B \cap \{p(n) | n \in \N \} \neq \emptyset). For (A ) a WM set (subclass of TE sets) we prove that (R_p ) has lower density 1. In addition we obtain a generalization of the latter result to the case of several pol…
In \cite{BAMU}, an ergodic theorem à la Birkhoff-von Neumann for the action of the fundamental group of a compact negatively curved manifold on the boundary of its universal cover is proved. A quick corollary is the irreducibility of the associated unitary representation. These results are generalized \cite{BOYER} to the context of convex cocompact groups of isometries of a CAT(-1) space, using Theorem 4.1.1 of \cite{ROBLI}, with the hypothesis of non arithmeticity of the spectrum. We prove all the analog results in the case of the free group $\mathbb{F}_r$ of rank $r$ even if $\mathbb{F}_r$ i…
For self-similar sets on $\mathbb{R}$ satisfying the exponential separation condition we show that the natural projections of shift invariant ergodic measures is equal to $\min\{1,\frac{h}{-χ}\}$, where $h$ and $χ$ are the entropy and Lyapunov exponent respectively. The proof relies on Shmerkin's recent result on the $L^{q}$ dimension of self-similar measures. We also use the same method to give results on convolutions and orthogonal projections of ergodic measures projected onto self-similar sets.
We define a notion of entropy for an infinite family $\mathcal{C}$ of measurable sets in a probability space. We show that the mean ergodic theorem holds uniformly for $\mathcal{C}$ under every ergodic transformation if and only if $\mathcal{C}$ has zero entropy. When the entropy of $\mathcal{C}$ is positive, we establish a strong converse showing that the uniform mean ergodic theorem fails generically in every isomorphism class, including the isomorphism classes of Bernoulli transformations. As a corollary of these results, we establish that every strong mixing transformation is uniformly str…
We provide a framework for studying randomly coloured point sets in a locally compact, second-countable space on which a metrisable unimodular group acts continuously and properly. We first construct and describe an appropriate dynamical system for uniformly discrete uncoloured point sets. For point sets of finite local complexity, we characterise ergodicity geometrically in terms of pattern frequencies. The general framework allows to incorporate a random colouring of the point sets. We derive an ergodic theorem for randomly coloured point sets with finite-range dependencies. Special attentio…
Examining multiple ergodic averages whose iterates are integer parts of real valued polynomials for totally ergodic systems, we provide various characterizations of total joint ergodicity, meaning that an average converges to the "expected" limit along every arithmetic progression. In particular, we obtain a complete characterization when the number of iterates is at most two, and disprove a conjecture of the first author. We also improve a result of Frantzikinakis on joint ergodicity of Hardy field functions of at most polynomial growth for totally ergodic systems, which extends a conjecture …
In this project we show the existence of arbitrary length arithmetic progressions in model sets and Meyer sets in the Euclidean $d$-space. We prove a van der Waerden type theorem for Meyer sets. We show that pure point subsets of Meyer sets with positive density and pure point diffraction contain arithmetic progressions of arbitrary length.
We establish an asymptotic formula for the number of lattice points in the sets \[ \mathbf S_{h_1, h_2, h_3}(λ): =\{x\in\mathbb Z_+^3:\lfloor h_1(x_1)\rfloor+\lfloor h_2(x_2)\rfloor+\lfloor h_3(x_3)\rfloor=λ\} \quad \text{with}\quad λ\in\mathbb Z_+; \] where functions $h_1, h_2, h_3$ are constant multiples of regularly varying functions of the form $h(x):=x^c\ell_h(x)$, where the exponent $c>1$ (but close to $1$) and a function $\ell_h(x)$ is taken from a certain wide class of slowly varying functions. Taking $h_1(x)=h_2(x)=h_3(x)=x^c$ we will also derive an asymptotic formula for the number o…
We propose to study multiple ergodic averages from multifractal analysis point of view. In some special cases in the symbolic dynamics, Hausdorff dimensions of the level sets of multiple ergodic average limit are determined by using Riesz products.
Let $K_1$ and $K_2$ be two one-dimensional homogeneous self-similar sets. Let $f$ be a continuous function defined on an open set $U\subset \mathbb{R}^{2}$. Denote the continuous image of $f$ by $$ f_{U}(K_1,K_2)=\{f(x,y):(x,y)\in (K_1\times K_2)\cap U\}. $$ In this paper we give an sufficient condition which guarantees that $f_{U}(K_1,K_2)$ contains some interiors. Our result is different from Simon and Taylor's \cite[Proposition 2.9]{ST} as we do not need the condition that the multiplication of the thickness of $K_1$ and $K_2$ is strictly greater than $1$. As a consequence, we give an appli…
We study transcendental meromorphic functions having two prepole asymptotic values and no critical values. We prove that these functions acting on their Julia sets are non-ergodic, which illustrates the antithesis of the Keen-Kotus result in [KK2] on the ergodicity of another subfamily of functions with two asymptotic values and no critical values.
We present a survey of ergodic theorems for actions of algebraic and arithmetic groups recently established by the authors, as well as some of their applications. Our approach is based on spectral methods employing the unitary representation theory of the groups involved. This allows the derivation of ergodic theorems with a rate of convergence, an important phenomenon which does not arise in classical ergodic theory. Quantitative ergodic theorems give rise to new and previously inaccessible applications, and we demonstrate the remarkable diversity of such applications by presenting several nu…
A compact set $E\subset {\Bbb R}^d$ is said to be arithmetically thick if there exists a positive integer $n$ so that the $n$-fold arithmetic sum of $E$ has non-empty interior. We prove the arithmetic thickness of $E$, if $E$ is uniformly non-flat, in the sense that there exists $ε_0>0$ such that for $x\in E$ and $0<r\leq {\rm diam}(E)$, $E\cap B(x,r)$ never stays $ε_0r$-close to a hyperplane in ${\Bbb R}^d$. Moreover, we prove the arithmetic thickness for several classes of fractal sets, including self-similar sets, self-conformal sets in ${\Bbb R}^d$ (with $d\geq 2$) and self-affine sets in …
We present a complete proof of a theorem of C.G. Moreira. Under mild checkable conditions, the theorem asserts that the Hausdorff dimension of the arithmetic sum of two dynamically defined Cantor subsets of the real line, equals either the sum of the dimensions or 1, whichever is smaller.
Assume that $T$ is a conservative ergodic measure preserving transformation of the infinite measure space $(X,\mathcal{A},μ)$.We study the asymptotic behaviour of occupation times of certain subsets of infinite measure. Specifically, we prove a Darling-Kac type distributional limit theorem for occupation times of barely infinite components which are separated from the rest of the space by a set of finite measure with c.f.-mixing return process. In the same setup we show that the ratios of occupation times of two components separated in this way diverge almost everywhere. These abstract results…
We describe a method for constructing Teichmüller geodesics where the vertical measured foliation $ν$ is minimal but is not uniquely ergodic and where we have a good understanding of the behavior of the Teichmüller geodesic. The construction depends on various parameters, and we show that one can adjust the parameters to ensure that the set of accumulation points of such a geodesic in the Thurston boundary is exactly the set of all possible measured foliations in the homotopy class of $ν$. With further adjustment of the parameters, one can even take $ν$ to be an ergodic measure on a non-unique…
We provide examples of transitive partially hyperbolic dynamics (specific but paradigmatic examples of homoclinic classes) which blend different types of hyperbolicity in the one-dimensional center direction. These homoclinic classes have two disjoint parts: an "exposed" piece which is poorly homoclinically related with the rest and a "core" with rich homoclinic relations. There is an associated natural division of the space of ergodic measures which are either supported on the exposed piece or on the core. We describe the topology of these two parts and show that they glue along nonhyperbolic…
Let $C_\la$ and $C_\ga$ be two affine Cantor sets in $\mathbb{R}$ with similarity dimensions $d_\la$ and $d_\ga$, respectively. We define an analog of the Bandt-Graf condition for self-similar systems and use it to give necessary and sufficient conditions for having $\Ha^{d_\la+d_\ga}(C_\la + C_\ga)>0$ where $C_\la + C_\ga$ denotes the arithmetic sum of the sets. We use this result to analyze the orthogonal projection properties of sets of the form $C_\la \times C_\ga$. We prove that for Lebesgue almost all directions $θ$ for which the projection is not one-to-one, the projection has zero $(d_…
Novikov's problem of semiclassical orbits of quasi-electrons in a normal metal leads to a correspondance between 3-ply periodic functions in R and fractals in R P^2. These fractals are the complement of infinitely many open sets labeled by integer 2-cycles of T^3. Here we present a characterization of the fractal points in terms of the open sets labels.
We use Series' Markovian coding for words in Fuchsian groups and the Bowen-Series coding of limit sets to prove an ergodic theorem for Cesaro averages of spherical averages in a Fuchsian group.
Given a sequence of curves on a surface, we provide conditions which ensure that (1) the sequence is an infinite quasi-geodesic in the curve complex, (2) the limit in the Gromov boundary is represented by a nonuniquely ergodic ending lamination, and (3) the sequence divides into a finite set of subsequences, each of which projectively converges to one of the ergodic measures on the ending lamination. The conditions are sufficiently robust, allowing us to construct sequences on a closed surface of genus $g$ for which the space of measures has the maximal dimension $3g-3$, for example. We also s…
Under the assumption of a natural subadditive potential, the so called cylinder function, working on the symbol space we prove the existence of the ergodic invariant probability measure satisfying the equilibrium state. As an application we show that for typical self-affine sets there exists an ergodic invariant measure having the same Hausdorff dimension as the set itself.
The concept of a uniform set is introduced for an ergodic, measure-preserving transformation on a non-atomic, infinite Lebesgue space. The uniform sets exist as much as they generate the underlying $σ$-algebra. This leads to the result that any ergodic, measure-preserving transformation on a non-atomic, infinite Lebesgue space is isomorphic to a minimal homeomorphism on a locally compact metric space which admits a unique, up to scaling, invariant Radon measure.
We unify and extend some previous results about cubic ergodic averages and sets of positive density in products of groups. This provides a joint generalization of earlier work of the author in the case of two commuting actions of an amenable group, and of Q. Chu's recent result on a a finite number of commuting transformations.
Nonstandard ergodic averages can be defined for a measure-preserving action of a group on a probability space, as a natural extension of classical (nonstandard) ergodic averages. We extend the one-dimensional theory, obtaining L^1 pointwise ergodic theorems for several kinds of nonstandard sparse group averages, with a special focus on the group Z^d. Namely, we extend results for sparse block averages and sparse random averages to their analogues on virtually nilpotent groups, and extend Christ's result for sparse deterministic sequences to its analogue on Z^d. The second and third results hav…
