Assume that $T$ is a conservative ergodic measure preserving transformation of the infinite measure space $(X,\mathcal{A},μ)$.We study the asymptotic behaviour of occupation times of certain subsets of infinite measure. Specifically, we prove a Darling-Kac type distributional limit theorem for occupation times of barely infinite components which are separated from the rest of the space by a set of finite measure with c.f.-mixing return process. In the same setup we show that the ratios of occupation times of two components separated in this way diverge almost everywhere. These abstract results are illustrated by applications to interval maps with indifferent fixed points.
We prove that the joint distribution of the occupation time ratios for ergodic transformations preserving an infinite measure converges to a multidimensional version of Lamperti's generalized arcsine distribution, in the sense of strong distributional convergence. Our results can be applied to interval maps and Markov chains. We adopt the double Laplace transform method, which has been utilized in the study of occupation times of diffusions on multiray. We also discuss the inverse problem.
We define an infinite measure-preserving transformation to have infinite symmetric ergodic index if all finite Cartesian products of the transformation and its inverse are ergodic, and show that infinite symmetric ergodic index does not imply that all products of powers are conservative, so does not imply power weak mixing. We provide a sufficient condition for $k$-fold and infinite symmetric ergodic index and use it to answer a question on the relationship between product conservativity and product ergodicity. We also show that a class of rank-one transformations that have infinite symmetric …
We investigate ergodic theory of Poisson suspensions. In the process, we establish close connections between finite and infinite measure preserving ergodic theory. Poisson suspensions thus provide a new approach to infinite measure preserving ergodic theory. Fields investigated here are mixing properties, spectral theory, joinings. We also compare Poisson suspensions to the apparently similar looking Gaussian dynamical systems.
We show the existence, over an arbitrary infinite ergodic $\mathbb{Z}$-dynamical system, of a generic ergodic relatively distal extension of arbitrary countable rank and arbitrary infinite compact extending groups (or more generally, infinite quotients of compact groups) in its canonical distal tower.
A rank-one infinite measure preserving flow $T=(T_t)_{t\in\Bbb R}$ is constructed such that for each $t\ne 0$, the Cartesian powers of the transformation $T_t$ are all ergodic.
We show that there exists a universal gap in the failure of the ergodic theorem for symmetric Birkhoff sums in infinite ergodic theory. In addition, an application of this result to a question of fluctuations of the Birkhoff integrals of horocyclic flows on geometrically finite surfaces is given.
We give examples of rank-one transformations that are (weak) doubly ergodic and rigid (so all their cartesian products are conservative), but with non-ergodic $2$-fold cartesian product. We give conditions for rank-one infinite measure-preserving transformations to be (weak) doubly ergodic and for their $k$-fold cartesian product to be conservative. We also show that a (weak) doubly ergodic nonsingular group action is ergodic with isometric coefficients, and that the latter strictly implies W measurable sensitivity.
We consider infinite staircase translation surfaces with varying step sizes. For typical step sizes we show that the translation flow is uniquely ergodic in almost every direction. Our result also hold for typical configurations of the Ehrenfest wind-tree model endowed with the Hausdorff topology. In contrast, we show that the translation flow on a periodic translation surface can not be uniquely ergodic in any direction.
We study the rich behavior of ergodicity and conservativity of Cartesian products of infinite measure preserving transformations. A class of transformations is constructed such that for any subset $R\subset \mathbb Q\cap (0,1)$ there exists $T$ in this class such that $T^p\times T^q$ is ergodic if and only if $\frac{p}{q} \in R$. This contrasts with the finite measure preserving case where $T^p\times T^q$ is ergodic for all nonzero $p$ and $q$ if and only if $T\times T$ is ergodic. We also show that our class is rich in the behavior of conservative products. For each positive integer $k$, a fa…
We show that generic infinite group extensions of geodesic flows on square tiled translation surfaces are ergodic in almost every direction, subject to certain natural constraints. Recently K. Frcaczek and C. Ulcigrai have shown that certain concrete staircases, covers of square-tiled surfaces, are not ergodic in almost every direction. In contrast we show the almost sure ergodicity of other concrete staircases. An appendix provides a combinatorial approach for the study of square-tiled surfaces.
Given $k>0$ and an Abelian countable discrete group $G$ with elements of infinite order, we construct $(i)$ rigid funny rank-one infinite measure preserving (i.m.p.) $G$-actions of ergodic index $k$, $(ii)$ 0-type funny rank-one i.m.p. $G$-actions of ergodic index $k$, $(iii)$ funny rank-one i.m.p. $G$-actions $T$ of ergodic index 2 such that the product $T\times T^{-1}$ is not ergodic. It is shown that $T\times T^{-1}$ is conservative for each funny rank-one $G$-action $T$.
The set of all possible configurations of the Ehrenfest wind-tree model endowed with the Hausdorff topology is a compact metric space. For a typical configuration we show that the wind-tree dynamics has infinite ergodic index in almost every direction. In particular some ergodic theorems can be applied to show that if we start with a large number of initially parallel particles their directions decorrelate as the dynamics evolve answering the question posed by the Ehrenfests.
We construct a class of rank-one infinite measure-preserving transformations such that for each transformation $T$ in the class, the cartesian product $T\times T$ of the transformation with itself is ergodic, but the product $T\times T^{-1}$ of the transformation with its inverse is not ergodic. We also prove that the product of any rank-one transformation with its inverse is conservative, while there are infinite measure-preserving conservative ergodic Markov shifts whose product with their inverse is not conservative.
We interpret the Pascal-adic transformation as a generalized induced automorphism (over odometer) and formulate the $σ$-finite analog of odometer which is also known as "Hajian-Kakutani transformation" (former "Ohio state example"). We shortly suggest a sketch of the theory of random walks on the groups on the base of $σ$-finite ergodic theory.
We investigate quantitative recurrence in systems having an infinite measure. We extend the Ornstein-Weiss theorem for a general class of infinite systems estimating return time in decreasing sequences of cylinders. Then we restrict to a class of one dimensional maps with indifferent fixed points and calculate quantitative recurrence in sequences of balls, obtaining that this is related to the behavior of the map near the fixed points.
1. We answer Michael Gordin's question providing singular spectrum for transformations with homoclinic Bernoulli flows via Poisson suspensions induced by modified Sidon rank-one constructions. 2. We give homoclinic proof of Emmanuel Roy's theorem on multiple mixing of Poisson suspensions, adding new examples to Jonathan King's ergodic homoclinic groups of special zero-entropy transformations. 3. Sasha Prikhod'ko found the fast decay of correlations for some iceberg automorphisms. We get similar correlations for a class of infinite rank-one Sidon transformations. This version is based on "On Mi…
Let $M=X/Γ$ be a geometrically finite negatively curved manifold with fundamental group $Γ$ acting on $X$ by isometries. The purpose of this paper is to study the mixing property of the geodesic flow on $T^1M$, the asymptotic equivalent as $R\longrightarrow+\infty$ of the number of closed geodesics on $M$ of length less than $R$ and of the orbital counting function $\sharp\{γ\inΓ |\ d(o,γ.o)\le R\}$. These properties are well known when the Bowen-Margulis measure on $T^1M$ is finite. We consider here divergent Schottky groups whose Bowen-Margulis measure is infinite and ergodic, and we precise…
We give a criterion which allows to prove non-ergodicity for certain infinite periodic billiards and directional flows on Z-periodic translation surfaces. Our criterion applies in particular to a billiard in an infinite band with periodically spaced vertical barriers and to the Ehrenfest wind-tree model, which is a planar billiard with a $Z^2$-periodic array of rectangular obstacles. We prove that, in these two examples, both for a full measure set of parameters of the billiard tables and for tables with rational parameters, for almost every direction the corresponding billiard flow is not erg…
We introduce concepts of Radon MSJ and Radon disjointness for infinite Radon measure preserving homeomorphisms of the locally compact Cantor space. We construct an uncountable family of pairwise Radon disjoint infinite Chacon like transformations. Every such transformation is Radon strictly ergodic, totally ergodic, asymmetric (not isomorphic to its inverse), has Radon MSJ and possesses Radon joinings whose ergodic components are not joinings.
We construct classes of two-dimensional aperiodic Lorentz systems that have infinite horizon and are 'chaotic', in the sense that they are (Poincaré) recurrent, uniformly hyperbolic, ergodic, and the first-return map to any scatterer is $K$-mixing. In the case of the Lorentz tubes (i.e., Lorentz gases in a strip), we define general measured families of systems (\emph{ensembles}) for which the above properties occur with probability 1. In the case of the Lorentz gases in the plane, we define families, endowed with a natural metric, within which the set of all chaotic dynamical systems is uncoun…
We give a short proof of the unique ergodicity of the strong stable foliation of the geodesic flow on the frame bundle of a hyperbolic manifold admitting a finite measure of maximal entropy. Equivalently, let G = S0o(n, 1), $Γ$ \textless{} G be a discrete subgroup of G, and G = N AK the Iwasawa decomposition of G. If the geodesic flow on $Γ$\G admits a finite measure of maximal entropy, we prove that the action of N on $Γ$\G by right multiplication admits a unique invariant measure supported on points whose A-orbit does not diverge.
In this note we identify the distributional limits of non-negative, ergodic stationary processes, showing that all are possible. Consequences for infinite ergodic theory are also explored and new examples of distributionally stable- and $α$-rationally ergodic tranformations are presented.
We generalize the proof of Karamata's Theorem by the method of approximation by polynomials to the operator case. As a consequence, we offer a simple proof of \emph{uniform dual ergodicity} for a very large class of dynamical systems with infinite measure, and we obtain bounds on the convergence rate. In many cases of interest, including the Pomeau-Manneville family of intermittency maps, the estimates obtained through real Tauberian remainder theory are very weak. Building on the techniques of complex Tauberian remainder theory, we develop a method that provides \emph{second (and higher) orde…
We study two properties of nonsingular and infinite measure-preserving ergodic systems: weak double ergodicity, and ergodicity with isometric coefficients. We show that there exist infinite measure-preserving transformations that are ergodic with isometric coefficients but are not weakly doubly ergodic. We also give type $\text{III}_λ$ examples of such systems, $0<λ\leq 1$. We prove that under certain hypotheses, systems that are weakly mixing are ergodic with isometric coefficients and along the way we give an example of a uniformly rigid topological dynamical system along the sequence $(n_i)…
We study the notions of weak rational ergodicity and rational weak mixing as defined by Jon Aaronson. We prove that various families of infinite measure-preserving rank-one transformations possess (or do not posses) these properties, and consider their relation to other notions of mixing in infinite measure.
A simple proof of the fact that each rank-one infinite measure preserving (i.m.p.) transformation is subsequence weakly rationally ergodic is found. Some classes of funny rank-one i.m.p. actions of Abelian groups are shown to be subsequence weakly rationally ergodic. A constructive definition of finite funny rank for actions of arbitrary infinite countable groups is given. It is shown that the ergodic i.m.p. transformations of balanced finite funny rank are subsequence weakly rationally ergodic. It is shown that the ergodic probability preserving transformations of exact finite rank, the ergod…
Let (Ω,μ) be a shift of finite type with a Markov probability, and (Y,ν) a non-atomic standard measure space. For each symbol i of the symbolic space, let Φ_i be a measure-preserving automorphism of (Y,ν). We study skew products of the form (ω,y) --> (σω,Φ_{ω_0}(y)), where σ=shift map on (Ω,μ). We prove that, when the skew product is conservative, it is ergodic if and only if the Φ_i's have no common non-trivial invariant set. In the second part we study the skew product when Ω={0,1}^Z, μ=Bernoulli measure, and Φ_0,Φ_1 are R-extensions of a same uniquely ergodic probability-preserving automorp…
We show that the absolutely normalized, symmetric Birkhoff sums of positive integrable functions in infinite, ergodic systems never converge pointwise even though they may be almost surely bounded away from zero and infinity.
We consider a transformation of a normalized measure space such that the image of any point is a finite set. We call such transformation $m$-transformation. In this case the orbit of any point looks like a tree. In the study of $m$-transformations we are interested in the properties of the trees. An $m$-transformation generates a stochastic kernel and a new measure. Using these objects, we introduce analogies of some main concept of ergodic theory: ergodicity, Koopman and Frobenius-Perron operators etc. We prove ergodic theorems and consider examples. We also indicate possible applications to …
Continuing the work in \cite{ergodic-infinite}, we show that within each stratum of translation surfaces, there is a residual set of surfaces for which the geodesic flow in almost every direction is ergodic for almost-every periodic group extension produced using a technique referred to as \emph{cuts}.
The concept of a uniform set is introduced for an ergodic, measure-preserving transformation on a non-atomic, infinite Lebesgue space. The uniform sets exist as much as they generate the underlying $σ$-algebra. This leads to the result that any ergodic, measure-preserving transformation on a non-atomic, infinite Lebesgue space is isomorphic to a minimal homeomorphism on a locally compact metric space which admits a unique, up to scaling, invariant Radon measure.
It is shown that a locally compact second countable group $G$ has the Haagerup property if and only if there exists a sharply weak mixing 0-type measure preserving free $G$-action $T=(T_g)_{g\in G}$ on an infinite $σ$-finite standard measure space $(X,μ)$ admitting an exhausting $T$-Følner sequence (i.e. a sequence $(A_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ of measured subsets of finite measure such that $A_1\subset A_2\subset\cdots$, $\bigcup_{n=1}^\infty A_n=X$ and $\lim_{n\to\infty}\sup_{g\in K}\frac{μ(T_gA_n\triangle A_n)}{μ(A_n)}= 0$ for each compact $K\subset G$). It is also shown that a pair of groups $H\sub…
A point is called generic for a flow preserving an infinite ergodic invariant Radon measure, if its orbit satisfies the conclusion of the ratio ergodic theorem for every pair of continuous functions with compact support and non-zero integrals. The generic points for horocycle flows on hyperbolic surfaces of finite genus are understood, but there are no results in infinite genus. We give such a result, by characterizing the generic points for $\Z^d$--covers.
We consider infinite measure-preserving non-primitive self-similar tiling systems in Euclidean space $\mathbb R^d$. We establish the second-order ergodic theorem for such systems, with exponent equal to the Hausdorff dimension of a graph-directed self-similar set associated with the substitution rule.
This note is devoted to infinite self-similar rank 1 constructions and their applications to the spectral theory of dynamical systems. The properties of orthogonal operators induced by self-similar constructions provide some unusual spectral properties of Gaussian and Poisson suspensions.
The conservative sequence of a set $A$ under a transformation $T$ is the set of all $n \in \mathbb{Z}$ such that $T^n A \cap A \not = \varnothing$. By studying these sequences, we prove that given any countable collection of nonsingular transformations with no finite invariant measure $\{T_i\}$, there exists a rank-one transformation $S$ such that $T_i \times S$ is not ergodic for all $i$. Moreover, $S$ can be chosen to be rigid or have infinite ergodic index. We establish similar results for $\mathbb{Z}^d$ actions and flows. Then, we find sufficient conditions on rank-one transformations $T$ …
We study limit laws for return time processes defined on infinite conservative ergodic measure preserving dynamical systems. Especially for the critical cases with purely atomic limiting distribution we derive distorted processes posessing non-degenerated limits. For these processes also large deviation asymptotics are stated. The Farey map is used as an illustrating example giving new insides into the metric number theory of continued fractions.
This paper is the first in a series of three. The main result, Theorem 1.11, gives an explicit description of the ergodic decomposition for infinite Pickrell measures on spaces of infinite complex matrices. The main construction is that of sigma-finite analogues of determinantal measures on spaces of configurations. An example is the infinite Bessel point process, the scaling limit of sigma-finite analogues of Jacobi orthogonal polynomial ensembles. The statement of Theorem 1.11 is that the infinite Bessel point process (subject to an appropriate change of variables) is precisely the ergodic d…
The third part of the paper concludes the proof of the main result --- the description of the ergodic decomposition of infinite Pickrell measures. First it is shown that the scaling limit of radial parts of finite-dimensional infinite Pickrell measures is precisely the infinite Bessel point process. It is then established that the "gaussian parameter" almost surely vanishes for our ergodic components, and the convergence to the scaling limit is then established in the space of finite measures on the space of finite measures. Finally, singularity is established for Pickrell measures correspondi…
The ergodic unitarily invariant measures on the space of infinite Hermitian matrices have been classified by Pickrell and Olshanski-Vershik. The much-studied complex inverse Wishart measures form a projective family, thus giving rise to a unitarily invariant measure on infinite positive-definite matrices. In this paper we completely solve the corresponding problem of ergodic decomposition for this measure.
We consider the ergodicity and consensus problem for a discrete-time linear dynamic model driven by random stochastic matrices, which is equivalent to studying these concepts for the product of such matrices. Our focus is on the model where the random matrices have independent but time-variant distribution. We introduce a new phenomenon, the infinite flow, and we study its fundamental properties and relations with the ergodicity and consensus. The central result is the infinite flow theorem establishing the equivalence between the infinite flow and the ergodicity for a class of independent ran…
The main result of this paper, Theorem 1.1, gives explicit formulae for the kernels of the ergodic decomposition measures for infinite Pickrell measures on spaces of infinite complex matrices. The kernels are obtained as the scaling limits of Christoffel-Uvarov deformations of Jacobi orthogonal polynomial ensembles.
We develop the basic theory of ergodic Schrödinger operators, which is well known for ergodic probability measures, in the case of a base dynamics on an infinite measure space. This includes the almost sure constancy of the spectrum and the spectral type, the definition and discussion of the density of states measure and the Lyapunov exponent, as well as a version of the Pastur--Ishii theorem. We also give some counterexamples that demonstrate that some results do not extend from the finite measure case to the infinite measure case. These examples are based on some constructions in infinite er…
The ergodic decomposition of a family of Hua-Pickrell measures on the space of infinite Hermitian matrices is studied. Firstly, we show that the ergodic components of Hua-Pickrell probability measures have no Gaussian factors, this extends a result of Alexei Borodin and Grigori Olshanski. Secondly, we show that the sequence of asymptotic eigenvalues of Hua-Pickrell random matrices is balanced in certain sense and has a "principal value" coincides with the $γ_1$ parameter of ergodic components. This allow us to complete the program of Borodin and Olshanski on the description of the ergodic deco…
In a previous paper (nlin.CD/0107041) the following class of billiards was studied: For $f: [0, +\infty) \longrightarrow (0, +\infty)$ convex, sufficiently smooth, and vanishing at infinity, let the billiard table be defined by $Q$, the planar domain delimited by the positive $x$-semiaxis, the positive $y$-semiaxis, and the graph of $f$. For a large class of $f$ we proved that the billiard map was hyperbolic. Furthermore we gave an example of a family of $f$ that makes this map ergodic. Here we extend the latter result to a much wider class of functions.
Let $O(\infty)$ and $U(\infty)$ be the inductively compact infinite orthogonal group and infinite unitary group respectively. The classifications of ergodic probability measures with respect to the natural group action of $O(\infty)\times O(m)$ on $\mathrm{Mat}(\mathbb{N}\times m, \mathbb{R})$ and that of $U(\infty)\times U(m)$ on $\mathrm{Mat}(\mathbb{N}\times m, \mathbb{C})$ are due to Olshanski. The original proofs for these results are based on the asymptotic representation theory. In this note, by applying the Vershik-Kerov method, we propose a simple method for obtaining these two classi…
The main result of this note, Theorem 2, is the following: a Borel measure on the space of infinite Hermitian matrices, that is invariant under the action of the infinite unitary group and that admits well-defined projections onto the quotient space of "corners" of finite size, must be finite. A similar result, Theorem 1, is also established for unitarily invariant measures on the space of all infinite complex matrices. These results, combined with the ergodic decomposition theorem of [3], imply that the infinite Hua-Pickrell measures of Borodin and Olshanski [2] have finite ergodic components…
Let $F$ be a non-discrete non-Archimedean locally compact field such that the characteristic $\mathrm{ch}(F)\ne 2$ and let $\mathcal{O}_F$ be the ring of integers in $F$. The main results of this paper are Theorem 1.2 that classifies ergodic probability measures on the space $\mathrm{Skew}(\mathbb{N}, F)$ of infinite skew-symmetric matrices with respect to the natural action of the group $\mathrm{GL}(\infty,\mathcal{O}_F)$ and Theorem 1.4, that gives an unexpected natural correspondence between the set of $\mathrm{GL}(\infty,\mathcal{O}_F)$-invariant Borel probability measures on $\mathrm{Sym}…
In this paper free harmonic analysis tools are used to study parabolic iteration in the complex upper half-plane. The main result here is a complete characterization for the norming constants in the monotonic central limit theorem. This allows us to construct a new class of conservative and ergodic measure-preserving transformations on the real line with Lebesgue measure. Among all, we mention that the generalized Boole transformation with infinitely many poles is shown to be conservative, as long as its residues are summable.
