We define the Chow $t$-structure on the $\infty$-category of motivic spectra $SH(k)$ over an arbitrary base field $k$. We identify the heart of this $t$-structure $SH(k)^{c\heartsuit}$ when the exponential characteristic of $k$ is inverted. Restricting to the cellular subcategory, we identify the Chow heart $SH(k)^{cell, c\heartsuit}$ as the category of even graded $MU_{2*}MU$-comodules. Furthermore, we show that the $\infty$-category of modules over the Chow truncated sphere spectrum is algebraic.
Our results generalize the ones in Gheorghe--Wang--Xu in three aspects: To integral results; To all base fields other than just $C$; To the entire $\infty$-category of motivic spectra $SH(k)$, rather than a subcategory containing only certain cellular objects.
We also discuss a strategy for computing motivic stable homotopy groups of (p-completed) spheres over an arbitrary base field $k$ using the Postnikov tower associated to the Chow $t$-structure and the motivic Adams spectral sequences over $k$.
The main goal of this paper is to break up motivic cohomology into smaller pieces as suggested by the conjectural Bloch-Beilinson filtrations for the Chow groups.
We study in detail the so-called Chow-weight homology of Voevodsky motivic complexes and relate it to motivic homology. We generalize earlier results and prove that the vanishing of higher motivic homology groups of a motif $M$ implies similar vanishing for its Chow-weight homology along with effectivity properties of the higher terms of its weight complex $t(M)$ and of higher Deligne weight quotients of its cohomology. Applying this statement to motives with compact support we obtain a similar relation between the vanishing of Chow groups and the cohomology with compact support of varieties. …
In this article we introduce the local versions of the Voevodsky category of motives with Z/p-coefficients over a field k, parameterized by finitely-generated extensions of k. We introduce the, so-called, flexible fields, passage to which is conservative on motives. We demonstrate that, over flexible fields, the constructed local motivic categories are much simpler than the global one and more reminiscent of a topological counterpart. This provides handy "local" invariants from which one can read motivic information. We compute the local motivic cohomology of a point, for p=2, and study the lo…
We study maps from a smooth scheme to a motivic sphere in the Morel-Voevodsky ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy category, i.e., motivic cohomotopy sets. Following Borsuk, we show that, in the presence of suitable hypotheses on the dimension of the source, motivic cohomotopy sets can be equipped with functorial abelian group structures. We then explore links between motivic cohomotopy groups, Euler class groups à la Nori-Bhatwadekar-Sridharan and Chow-Witt groups. We show that, again under suitable hypotheses on the base field $k$, if $X$ is a smooth affine $k$-variety of dimension $d$, then the Euler c…
In this article we formalize and enhance Kontsevich's beautiful insight that Chow motives can be embedded into non-commutative ones after factoring out by the action of the Tate object. We illustrate the potential of this result by developing three of its manyfold applications: (1) the notions of Schur and Kimura finiteness admit an adequate extension to the realm of non-commutative motives; (2) Gillet-Soule's motivic measure admits an extension to the Grothendieck ring of non-commutative motives; (3) certain motivic zeta functions admit an intrinsic construction inside the category of non-com…
We develop the theory of fundamental classes in the setting of motivic homotopy theory. Using this we construct, for any motivic spectrum, an associated bivariant theory in the sense of Fulton-MacPherson. We import the tools of Fulton's intersection theory into this setting: (refined) Gysin maps, specialization maps, and formulas for excess intersections, self-intersections, and blow-ups. We also develop a theory of Euler classes of vector bundles in this setting. For the Milnor-Witt spectrum recently constructed by Déglise-Fasel, we get a bivariant theory extending the Chow-Witt groups of Bar…
The main goal of this paper is to deduce (from a recent resolution of singularities result of Gabber) the following fact: (effective) Chow motives with $Z[1/p]$-coefficients over a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $p$ generate the category $DM^{eff}_{gm}[1/p]$ (of effective geometric Voevodsky's motives with $Z[1/p]$-coefficients). It follows that $DM^{eff}_{gm}[1/p]$ could be endowed with a Chow weight structure $w_{Chow}$ whose heart is $Chow^{eff}[1/p]$ (weight structures were introduced in a preceding paper, where the existence of $w_{Chow}$ for $DM^{eff}_{gm}Q$ was also proved). As sho…
We describe certain criteria for a motif $M$ to be $r$-effective, i.e., to belong to the $r$th Tate twist $Obj DM^{eff}_{gm,R}(r)=Obj DM^{eff}_{gm,R} \otimes L^{\otimes r}$ of effective Voevodsky motives (for $r\ge 1$; $R$ is the coefficient ring). In particular, $M$ is 1-effective if and only if a complex whose terms are certain Chow groups of zero-cycles is acyclic. The dual to this statement checks whether an effective motif $M$ belongs to the subcategory of $DM^{eff}_{gm,R}$ generated by motives of varieties of dimension $\le r$. These criteria are formulated in terms of the Chow-weight (c…
We show that motivic homology, motivic Borel-Moore homology and higher Chow groups satisfy homological descent for hyperenvelopes, and l-hyperenvelopes after inverting l.
The goal of this paper is to prove: if certain 'standard' conjectures on motives over algebraically closed fields hold, then over any 'reasonable' $S$ there exists a motivic $t$-structure for the category of Voevodsky's $S$-motives (as constructed by Cisinski and Deglise). If $S$ is 'very reasonable' (for example, of finite type over a field) then the heart of this $t$-structure (the category of mixed motivic sheaves over $S$) is endowed with a weight filtration with semi-simple factors. We also prove a certain 'motivic decomposition theorem' (assuming the conjectures mentioned) and characteri…
Due to the work of many authors in the last decades, given an algebraic orbifold (smooth proper Deligne-Mumford stack with trivial generic stabilizer), one can construct its orbifold Chow ring and orbifold Grothendieck ring, and relate them by the orbifold Chern character map, generalizing the fundamental work of Chen-Ruan on orbifold cohomology. In this paper, we extend this theory naturally to higher Chow groups and higher algebraic K-theory, mainly following the work of Jarvis-Kaufmann-Kimura and Edidin-Jarvis-Kimura.
We introduce in this note the notion of the category of twisted Chow-Witt correspondences $CHW(k)$ over a field $k$ of characteristic different from $2$. Moreover, we show that over an infinite perfect field this category $CHW(k)$ admits a fully faithful embedding into the geometric stable $\A^1$-derived category $D_{\A^1,gm}(k)$ after taking $\Q$-localization. We also prove a conjecture of F. Morel about the rational splitting of stable $\A^1$-cohomology over an essentially smooth scheme $S$ over a field $k$ of $char(k) \neq 2$.
We introduce in this work the notion of the category of pure $\mathbf{E}$-Motives, where $\mathbf{E}$ is a motivic strict ring spectrum and construct twisted $\mathbf{E}$-cohomology by using six functors formalism of J. Ayoub. In particular, we construct the category of pure Chow-Witt motives $CHW(k)_{\mathbb{Q}}$ over a field $k$ and show that this category admits a fully faithful embedding into the geometric stable $\mathbb{A}^1$-derived category $D_{\mathbb{A}^1,gm}(k)_{\mathbb{Q}}$.
We present a version of projective bundle theorem in MW-motives (resp. Chow-Witt rings), which says that $\widetilde{CH}^*(\mathbb{P}(E))$ is determined by $\widetilde{CH}^*(X)$, $\widetilde{CH}^*(X,det(E)^{\vee})$, $CH^*(X)$ and $Sq^2$ for smooth quasi-projective schemes $X$ and vector bundles $E$ over $X$ with $e(E^{\vee})=0\in H^n(X,W(det(E)))$, provided that $_2CH^*(X)=0$. As an application, we compute the MW-motives of blow-ups with smooth centers. Moreover, we discuss the invariance of Chow-Witt cycles of projective bundles under automorphisms of vector bundles.
In this article we study the subgroup of the Picard group of Voevodsky's category of geometric motives generated by the reduced motives of affine quadrics. Our main tools here are the functors of Bachmann, but we also provide an alternative method. We show that the group in question can be described in terms of indecomposable direct summands in the motives of projective quadrics. In particular, we describe all the relations among the reduced motives of affine quadrics. We also extend the Criterion of motivic equivalence of projective quadrics.
We relate the recognition principle for infinite $\mathbf P^1$-loop spaces to the theory of motivic fundamental classes of Déglise, Jin, and Khan. We first compare two kinds of transfers that are naturally defined on cohomology theories represented by motivic spectra: the framed transfers given by the recognition principle, which arise from Voevodsky's computation of the Nisnevish sheaf associated with $\mathbf A^n/(\mathbf A^n-0)$, and the Gysin transfers defined via Verdier's deformation to the normal cone. We then introduce the category of finite E-correspondences for E a motivic ring spect…
The main goal of this paper is to define the so-called Chow weight structure for the category of Beilinson motives over any 'reasonable' base scheme $S$ (this is the version of Voevodsky's motives over $S$ defined by Cisinski and Deglise). We also study the functoriality properties of the Chow weight structure (they are very similar to the well-known functoriality of weights for mixed complexes of sheaves). As shown in a preceding paper, the Chow weight structure automatically yields an exact conservative weight complex functor (with values in $K^b(Chow(S))$). Here $Chow(S)$ is the heart of th…
We review and simplify A. Beilinson's construction of a basis for the motivic cohomology of a point over a cyclotomic field, then promote the basis elements to higher Chow cycles and evaluate the KLM regulator map on them.
We introduce the notion of a quasi DG category, generalizing that of a DG category. To a quasi DG category satisfying certain additional conditions, we associate another quasi DG category, the quasi DG category of $C$-diagrams. We then show the homotopy category of the quasi DG category of $C$-diagrams has the structure of a triangulated category. This procedure is then applied to produce a triangulated category of mixed motives over a base variety.
We show that if G is a finite constant group acting on a scheme X such that the order of G is invertible in the residue fields of X, then the G-equivariant motivic stable homotopy category of X is equivalent to the stabilization of the category of motivic G-spaces with finite étale transfers over X at the trivial representation sphere. Along the way we obtain several results of independent interest, among them: we construct and study norms in the motivic homotopy theory of stacks, and we extend the homotopy t-structure to DM-stacks and establish some favorable properties.
Let $F$ and $k$ be perfect fields. The main goal of this paper is to investigate algebraic models for the Morel-Voevodsky unstable motivic homotopy category $\mathrm{Ho}(F)$ after $\mathbf{H}^{\mathbb{A}^1}k$ localization. More specifically, we extend results of Goerss to the $\mathbb{A}^1$-algebraic topology setting: we study the homotopy theory of the category $s\mathrm{coCAlg}_k(Sm_F)$ of presheaves of simplicial coalgebras over a field $k$ and their $τ$ and $\mathbb{A}^1$-localizations. For $k$ algebraically closed, we show that the unit of the adjunction $k^δ[-]\dashv(-)^{gp}$ determines …
We construct an algebraic-cycle based model for the motivic cohomology on the category of schemes of finite type over a field, where schemes may admit arbitrary singularities and may be non-reduced. We show that our theory is functorial on the category, that it detects nilpotence, and that its restriction to the subcategory of smooth schemes agrees with the pre-existing motivic cohomology theory, which is the higher Chow theory of S. Bloch (Adv. Math., 1986). A few structures and applications are discussed.
We show that mapping spaces in the p-local motivic stable category over an Fp-scheme are strictly commutative monoids (whence HZ-modules) in a canonical way.
Let X be a Noetherian scheme of finite dimension and denote by rho the (additive inverse of the) morphism in SH(X) from S to Gm corresponding to the unit -1. Here SH(X) denotes the motivic stable homotopy category. We show that the category obtained by inverting rho in SH(X) is canonically equivalent to the (simplicial) local stable homotopy category of the site X_ret, by which we mean the small real etale site of X, comprised of etale schemes over X with the real etale topology. One immediate application is that SH(RR)[rho^-1] is equivalent to the classical stable homotopy category. In partic…
It is an open conjecture of Orlov that the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves of a smooth projective variety determines its Chow motive with rational coefficients. In this master's thesis we introduce a category of \emph{perfect correspondences}, whose objects are smooth projective varieties and morphisms $X \to Y$ are perfect complexes on $X \times Y$. We show that isomorphism in this category is the same as equivalence of derived categories, and use this to show that the derived category determines the noncommutative Chow motive (in the sense of Tabuada) and, up to Tate twists, the…
In this article we further the study of noncommutative numerical motives. By exploring the change-of-coefficients mechanism, we start by improving some of our previous main results. Then, making use of the notion of Schur-finiteness, we prove that the category NNum(k)_F of noncommutative numerical motives is (neutral) super-Tannakian. As in the commutative world, NNum(k)_F is not Tannakian. In order to solve this problem we promote periodic cyclic homology to a well-defined symmetric monoidal functor HP on the category of noncommutative Chow motives. This allows us to introduce the correct non…
We study Grothedieck groups of triangulated categories using weight structures, weight complexes, and the corresponding pure (co)homological functors. We prove some general statements on $K_0$ of weighted categories and apply it to Voevodsky motives endowed with so-called Chow weight structures. We obtain certain "motivic substitutes" for smooth compactifications of smooth varieties over arbitrary perfect fields; this enables us to make certain unramified cohomology and Euler characteristic calculations that are closely related to results of T. Ekedahl and B. Kahn.
Let F be a field of characteristic different than 2. We establish surjectivity of Balmer's comparison map rho^* from the tensor triangular spectrum of the homotopy category of compact motivic spectra to the homogeneous Zariski spectrum of Milnor-Witt K-theory. We also comment on the tensor triangular geometry of compact cellular motivic spectra, producing in particular novel field spectra in this category. We conclude with a list of questions about the structure of the tensor triangular spectrum of the stable motivic homotopy category.
We show that a triangulated motivic category admits categorical Thom isomorphisms for vector bundles with an additional structure if and only if the generalized motivic cohomology theory represented by the tensor unit object admits Thom classes. We also show that the stable $\mathbb{A}^1$-derived category does not admit Thom isomorphisms for oriented vector bundles and, more generally, for symplectic bundles. In order to do so we compute the first homology sheaves of the motivic sphere spectrum and show that the class in the coefficient ring of $\mathbb{A}^1$-homology corresponding to the seco…
In this paper certain Chow weight structures on the "big" triangulated motivic categories $DM_R^{eff}\subset DM_R$ are defined in terms of motives of all smooth varieties over the base field. This definition allows studying basic properties of these weight structures without applying resolution of singularities; thus we don't have to assume that the coefficient ring $R$ contains $1/p$ in the case where the characteristic $p$ of the base field is positive. Moreover, in the case where $R$ satisfies the latter assumption our weight structures are "compatible" with Chow weight structures defined i…
We consider the "homotopy coniveau tower" for an arbitrary cohomology theory on smooth varieties over a field or a Dedekind domain. This tower is a generalization of the construction used by Bloch-Lichtenbaum and Friedlander-Suslin in their studies of the spectral sequence from motivic cohomology to K-theory. Our main result is that an application of the classical Chow's moving lemma and some categorical constructions make the homotopy coniveau tower strictly functorial when the base is a field, and functorial in the homotopy category when the base is a Dedekind domain.
For each prime $p$, we define a $t$-structure on the category $\widehat{S^{0,0}}/τ\text{-}\mathbf{Mod}_{harm}^b$ of harmonic $\mathbb{C}$-motivic left module spectra over $\widehat{S^{0,0}}/τ$, whose MGL-homology has bounded Chow-Novikov degree, such that its heart is equivalent to the abelian category of $p$-completed $BP_*BP$-comodules that are concentrated in even degrees. We prove that $\widehat{S^{0,0}}/τ\text{-}\mathbf{Mod}_{harm}^b$ is equivalent to $\mathcal{D}^b({{BP}_*{BP}\text{-}\mathbf{Comod}}^{ev})$ as stable $\infty$-categories equipped with $t$-structures. As an application, for…
Let k be a field and denote by SH(k) the motivic stable homotopy category. Recall its full subcategory HI_0(k) of effective homotopy modules. Write NAlg(HI_0(k)) for the category of normed motivic spectra with underlying spectrum an effective homotopy module. In this article we provide an explicit description of NAlg(HI_0(k)) as the category of sheaves with generalized transfers and étale norms, and explain how this is closely related to the classical notion of Tambara functors.
Let $\mathbb{M}:=(M(X),p)$ be a direct summand of the motive associated with a geometrically split, geometrically variety over a field $F$ satisfying the nilpotence principle. We show that under some conditions on an extension $E/F$, if $\mathbb{M}$ is a direct summand of another motive $M$ over an extension $E$, then $\mathbb{M}$ is a direct summand of $M$ over $F$.
A smooth projective scheme $X$ over a field $k$ is said to satisfy the Rost nilpotence principle if any endomorphism of $X$ in the category of Chow motives that vanishes on an extension of the base field $k$ is nilpotent. We show that an étale motivic analogue of the Rost nilpotence principle holds for all smooth projective schemes over a perfect field. This provides a new approach to the question of Rost nilpotence and allows us to obtain an elegant proof of Rost nilpotence for surfaces, as well as for birationally ruled threefolds over a field of characteristic $0$.
In paper 0704.4003, Bondarko recently defined the notion of weight structure, and proved that the category $\DgM$ of geometrical motives over a perfect field k, as defined and studied by Voevodsky, Suslin and Friedlander, is canonically equipped with such a structure. Building on this result, and under a condition on the weights avoided by the boundary motive, we describe a method to construct intrinsically in $\DgM$ a motivic version of interior cohomology of smooth, but possibly non-projective schemes. In a sequel to this work, this method will be applied to Shimura varieties.
We study various triangulated motivic categories and introduce a vast family of aisles (these are certain classes of objects) in them. These aisles are defined in terms of the corresponding "motives" (or motivic spectra) of smooth varieties in them; we relate them to the corresponding homotopy t-structures. We describe our aisles in terms of stalks at function fields and prove that they widely generalize the ones corresponding to slice filtrations. Further, the filtrations on the "homotopy hearts" $Ht_{hom}^{eff}$ of the corresponding effective subcategories that are induced by these aisles ca…
We start by developing a theory of noncommutative (=NC) mixed motives with coefficients in any commutative ring. In particular, we construct a symmetric monoidal triangulated category of NC mixed motives, over a base field k, and a full subcategory of NC mixed Artin motives. Making use of Hochschild homology, we then apply Ayoub's weak Tannakian formalism to these motivic categories. In the case of NC mixed motives, we obtain a motivic Hopf dg algebra, which we describe explicitly in terms of Hochschild homology and complexes of exact cubes. In the case of NC mixed Artin motives, we compute th…
In this paper we establish a precise comparison between vanishing cycles and the singularity category of Landau-Ginzburg models over a complete discrete valuation ring. By using noncommutative motives, we first construct a motivic $\ell$-adic realization functor for dg-categories. Our main result, then asserts that, given a Landau-Ginzburg model over a complete discrete valuation ring with potential induced by a uniformizer, the $\ell$-adic realization of its singularity category is given by the inertia-invariant part of vanishing cohomology. We also prove a functorial and $\infty$-categorical…
In this paper, we continue the program initiated by Kahn-Saito-Yamazaki by constructing and studying an unstable motivic homotopy category with modulus, extending the Morel-Voevodsky construction from smooth schemes over a field $k$ to certain diagrams of schemes. We present this category as a candidate environment for studying representability problems for non $\mathbb{A}^1$-invariant generalized cohomology theories.

In this paper we introduce the notion of a $cdp$-functor to a Waldhausen category. We show that such functors admit extensions that satisfy the excision property, to which we associate Euler-Poincaré characteristics that send the class of a proper scheme to the class of its image. As an application, we show that the Yoneda embedding gives rise to a monoidal proper-fibred Waldhausen category over Noetherian schemes of finite Krull dimensions, with canonical $cdp$-functors to its fibres.
We prove: if the (étale or de Rham) realization functor is conservative on the category $DM_{gm}$ of Voevodsky motives with rational coefficients then motivic zeta functions of arbitrary varieties are rational and numerical motives are Kimura-finite. The latter statement immediately implies that the category of numerical motives is (essentially) Tannakian. This observation becomes actual due to the recent announcement of J. Ayoub that the De Rham cohomology realization is conservative on $DM_{gm}(k)$ whenever $\operatorname{char} k=0$. We apply this statement to exterior powers of motives comi…
