We survey old and new approaches to the study of symbolic powers of ideals. Our focus is on the symbolic Rees algebra of an ideal, viewed both as a tool to investigate its symbolic powers and as a source of challenging problems in its own right. We provide an invitation to this area of investigation by stating several open questions.
For the polynomial ring over an arbitrary field with twelve variables, there exists a prime ideal whose symbolic Rees algebra is not finitely generated.
In this paper, we shall study finite generation of symbolic Rees rings of the defining ideal ${\frak p}$ of the space monomial curve $(t^a, t^b, t^c)$ for pairwise coprime integers $a$, $b$, $c$. Suppose that the base field is of characteristic $0$ and the above ideal ${\frak p}$ is minimally generated by three polynomials. Under the assumption that the homogeneous element $ξ$ of the minimal degree in ${\frak p}$ is the negative curve, we determine the minimal degree of an element $η$ such that the pair $\{ ξ, η\}$ satisfies Huneke's criterion in the case where the symbolic Rees ring is Noethe…
Fermat ideals define planar point configurations that are closely related to the intersection locus of the members of a specific pencil of curves. These ideals have gained recent popularity as counterexamples to some proposed containments between symbolic and ordinary powers. We give a systematic treatment of the family of Fermat ideals, describing explicitly the minimal generators and the minimal free resolutions of all their ordinary powers as well as many symbolic powers. We use these to study the ordinary and the symbolic Rees algebra of Fermat ideals. Specifically, we show that the symbol…
This paper contributes to the study of the prime spectrum and dimension theory of symbolic Rees algebra over Noetherian domains. We first establish some general results on the prime ideal structure of subalgebras of affine domains, which actually arise, in the Noetherian context, as domains between a domain $A$ and $A[a^{-1}]$. We then examine closely the special context of symbolic Rees algebras (which yielded the first counter-example to the Zariski-Hilbert problem). One of the results states that if $A$ is a Noetherian domain and $p$ a maximal ideal of $A$, then the Rees algebra of $p$ inhe…
Let I be a divisorial ideal of a strongly F-regular ring R. Watanabe asked if the symbolic Rees algebra R_s(I) is Cohen-Macaulay whenever it is Noetherian. We develop the notion of multi-symbolic Rees algebras, and use this to show that R_s(I) is indeed Cohen-Macaulay whenever a certain auxiliary ring is finitely generated over R.
Consider the blow-up Y of a weighted projective plane at a point in the open orbit over a field of characteristic 0. We assume that there exists a curve C on Y such that C^2<0 and C.E=1, where E is the exceptional curve. In this paper we give a (very simple) necessary and sufficient condition for finite generation of the Cox ring of Y (Theorem~1.2). It is an affirmative answer to a conjecture due to He and Kurano-Nishida.
The purpose of this paper is to prove that the symbolic Rees rings of ideals defining certain finite sets of points in the projective plane over an algebraically closed field are finitely generated using a ring theoretical criterion which is known as Huneke's criterion.
In this paper we extend a result of Cowsik on set-theoretic complete intersection and a result Huneke, Morales and Goto and Nishida about Noetherian symbolic Rees algebras of ideals. As applications, we show that the symbolic Rees algebras of the following ideals are Noetherian and the ideals are set-theoretic complete intersections: (a) the edge ideal of a complete graph, (b) the Fermat ideal and (c) the Jacobian ideal of a certain hyperplane arrangement.
In this paper, we shall study finite generation of symbolic Rees rings of the defining ideal of the space monomial curves $(t^a, t^b, t^c)$ for pairwise coprime integers $a$, $b$, $c$ such that $(a,b,c) \neq (1,1,1)$. If such a ring is not finitely generated over a base field, then it is a counterexample to the Hilbert's fourteenth problem. Finite generation of such rings is deeply related to existence of negative curves on certain normal projective surfaces. We study a sufficient condition (Definition 3.6) for existence of a negative curve. Using it, we prove that, in the case of $(a+b+c)^2 >…
Let $I$ be an ideal whose symbolic Rees algebra is Noetherian. For $m \geq 1$, the $m$-th symbolic defect, sdefect$(I,m)$, of $I$ is defined to be the minimal number of generators of the module $\frac{I^{(m)}}{I^m}$. We prove that sdefect$(I,m)$ is eventually quasi-polynomial as a function in $m$. We compute the symbolic defect explicitly for certain monomial ideals arising from graphs, termed cover ideals. We go on to give a formula for the Waldschmidt constant, an asymptotic invariant measuring the growth of the degrees of generators of symbolic powers, for ideals whose symbolic Rees algebra…
This work is about the structure of the symbolic Rees algebra of the base ideal of a Cremona map. We give sufficient conditions under which this algebra has the "expected form" in some sense. The main theorem in this regard seemingly covers all previous results on the subject so far. The proof relies heavily on a criterion of birationality and the use of the so-called inversion factor of a Cremona map. One adds a pretty long selection of examples of plane and space Cremona maps tested against the conditions of the theorem, with special emphasis on Cohen--Macaulay base ideals.
Let G be a simple graph and let J be its ideal of vertex covers. We give a graph theoretical description of the irreducible b-vertex covers of G, i.e., we describe the minimal generators of the symbolic Rees algebra of J. Then we study the irreducible b-vertex covers of the blocker of G, i.e., we study the minimal generators of the symbolic Rees algebra of the edge ideal of G. We give a graph theoretical description of the irreducible binary b-vertex covers of the blocker of G. It is shown that they correspond to irreducible induced subgraphs of G. As a byproduct we obtain a method, using Hilb…
Let C be a clutter and let I be its edge ideal. We present a combinatorial description of the minimal generators of the symbolic Rees algebra Rs(I) of I. It is shown that the minimal generators of Rs(I) are in one to one correspondence with the irreducible parallelizations of C. From our description some major results on symbolic Rees algebras of perfect graphs and clutters will follow. As a byproduct, we give a method, using Hilbert bases, to compute all irreducible parallelizations of C along with all the corresponding vertex covering numbers.
Given two determinantal rings over a field k. We consider the Rees algebra of the diagonal ideal, the kernel of the multiplication map. The special fiber ring of the diagonal ideal is the homogeneous coordinate ring of the join variety. When the Rees algebra and the Symmetric algebra coincide, we show that the Rees algebra is Cohen-Macaulay.
We show that several properties of the theory of Rees algebras of modules become more transparent using the category of coherent functors rather than working directly with modules. In particular, we show that the Rees algebra is induced by a canonical map of coherent functors.
We compute the canonical class of certain Rees algebras. Our formula generalizes that of Herzog and Vasconcelos. Its proof relies on the fact that the formation of the canonical module commutes with subintersections in important cases. As an application we treat the classical determinantal ideals and the corresponding algebras of minors.
In this paper we show that the Rees algebra can be made into a functor on modules over a ring in a way that extends its classical definition for ideals. The Rees algebra of a module M may be computed in terms of a "maximal" map f from M to a free module. It is the image of the map induced by f on symmetric algebras. We show that the analytic spread and reductions of M can be determined from any embedding of M into a free module, and in characteristic 0--but not in positive characteristic!--the Rees algebra itself can be computed from any such embedding.
We compute a minimal bigraded resolution of the Rees Algebra associated to a proper rational parametrization of a monomial plane curve. We describe explicitly both the bigraded Betti numbers and the maps of the resolution in terms of a generalized version of the Euclidean Algorithm. We also explore the relation between pencils of adjoints of the monomial plane curve and elements in a suitable piece of the defining ideal of the Rees Algebra.
This paper concerns a generalization of the Rees algebra of ideals due to Eisenbud, Huneke and Ulrich that works for any finitely generated module over a noetherian ring. Their definition is in terms of maps to free modules. We give an intrinsic definition using divided powers.
There is a natural epimorphism from the symmetric algebra to the Rees algebra of an ideal. When this epimorphism is an isomorphism, we say that the ideal is of linear type. Given two determinantal rings over a field, we consider the diagonal ideal, the kernel of the multiplication map. We prove that the diagonal ideal is of linear type and recover the defining ideal of the Rees algebra in some special cases. The special fiber ring of the diagonal ideal is the homogeneous coordinate ring of the join variety.
Let $V$ be a smooth scheme over a field $k$, and let $\{I_n, n\geq 0\}$ be a filtration of sheaves of ideals in $\calo_V$, such that $I_0=\calo_V$, and $I_s\cdot I_t\subset I_{s+t}$. In such case $\bigoplus I_n$ is called a Rees algebra. A Rees algebra is said to be a Diff-algebra if, for any two integers $N>n$ and any differential operator $D$ of order $n$, $D(I_N)\subset I_{N-n}$. Any Rees algebra extends to a smallest Diff-algebra. There are two ways to define extensions of Rees algebras, and both are of interest in singularity theory. One is that defined by taking integral closures (in whi…
We consider a rational map $ϕ: \mathbb{P}_k^{m} \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}_k^n$ that is a parameterization of an $m$-dimensional variety. Our main goal is to study the $(m-1)$-dimensional fibers of $ϕ$ in relation to the $m$-th local cohomology modules of the Rees algebra of its base ideal.
The purpose of this paper is to show how Rees algebras can be applied in the study of singularities embedded in smooth schemes over perfect fields. In particular, we will study situations in which the multiplicity of a hypersurface is a multiple of the characteristic. As another application, here we indicate how the use of these algebras has trivialized local-global questions in resolution of singularities over fields of characteristic zero.
Let $I \subset R = \mathbb{F}[x_1,x_2]$ be a height two ideal minimally generated by three homogeneous polynomials of the same degree $d$, where $\mathbb{F}$ is a field of characteristic zero. We use the theory of $D$-modules to deduce information about the defining equations of the Rees algebra of $I$. Let $\mathcal{K}$ be the kernel of the canonical map $α: \text{Sym}(I) \rightarrow \text{Rees}(I)$ from the symmetric algebra of $I$ onto the Rees algebra of $I$. We prove that $\mathcal{K}$ can be described as the solution set of a system of differential equations, that the whole bigraded stru…

Let X be a set of smooth points in P^2, and I = \oplus_{t >= d} I_t the defining ideal of X. In this paper, we give a set of defining equations for the Rees algebra R(I_{d+1}) of the ideal generated by I_{d+1}. This study give information to completely answer questions on the defining ideals of projective embeddings of the blowup of P^2 along the points in X, which has been studied by many authors. In this paper, we also study the asymptotic behaviour of the Rees algebras R(I_t) of the ideal generated by I_t, as t gets large.
We describe a minimal set of generators of the defining ideal of the Rees Algebra associated to a proper parametrization of any monoid hypersurface. In the case of plane curves, we recover a known description for rational parametrizations having a syzygy of minimal degree (μ=1). We also show that our approach can be applied to parametrizations of rational surfaces having a Hilbert-Burch resolution with μ_1=μ_2=1.
Let I be an ideal of height two in R=k[x_0,x_1] generated by forms of the same degree, and let K be the ideal of defining equations of the Rees algebra of I. Suppose that the second largest column degree in the syzygy matrix of I is e. We give an algorithm for computing the minimal generators of K whose degree is at least e, as well as a simple formula for the bidegrees of these generators. In the case where I is an almost complete intersection, we give a generating set for each graded piece K_(i,*) with i>=e-1.
We describe the equations of the Rees algebra R(I) of an equimultiple ideal I of deviation one, provided that I has a reduction J generated by a regular sequence and such that the initial forms of the elements of this sequence, except possibly the last one, are also a regular sequence in the associated graded ring of I. In particular, we prove that there is a single equation of top degree in a minimal generating set of the ideal of equations of R(I) and we relate this degree to the reduction number, recovering several known results in the context.
In this dissertation, we tackle the problem of describing the equations of the Rees algebra of I for I =(J,y), with J being of linear type. Throughout, such ideals are referred to as ideals of almost-linear type. In Theorem A, we give a full description of the equations of Rees algebras of ideals of the form I = (J,y), with J satisfying an homological vanishing condition. Theorem A permits us to recover and extend well-known results about families of ideals of almost-linear type due to W.V. Vasconcelos, S. Huckaba, N.V. Trung, W. Heinzer and M.-K. Kim, among others. In Theorem B, we prove that…
We introduce and study vertex cover algebras of weighted simplicial complexes. These algebras are special classes of symbolic Rees algebras. We show that symbolic Rees algebras of monomial ideals are finitely generated and that such an algebra is normal and Cohen-Macaulay if the monomial ideal is squarefree. For a simple graph, the vertex cover algebra is generated by elements of degree 2, and it is standard graded if and only if the graph is bipartite. We also give a general upper bound for the maximal degree of the generators of vertex cover algebras.
A new approach is established to computing the image of a rational map, whereby the use of approximation complexes is complemented with a detailed analysis of the torsion of the symmetric algebra in certain degrees. In the case the map is everywhere defined this analysis provides free resolutions of graded parts of the Rees algebra of the base ideal in degrees where it does not coincide with the corresponding symmetric algebra. A surprising fact is that the torsion in those degrees only contributes to the first free module in the resolution of the symmetric algebra modulo torsion. An additiona…
In this paper we consider multi-graded extended Rees algebras of zero dimensional ideals which are Cohen-Macaulay (CM) with minimal multiplicity. We show that the minimal multiplicity property can occur only for the ordinary extended Rees algebra and the bigraded extended Rees algebra. For the bigraded extended Rees algebra we find necessary conditions for it to be CM with minimal multiplicity. We also produce bigraded Rees algebras which are Cohen-Macaulay with minimal multiplicity.
In this paper we study irreducible representations and symbolic Rees algebras of monomial ideals. Then we examine edge ideals associated to vertex-weighted oriented graphs. These are digraphs having no oriented cycles of length two with weights on the vertices. For a monomial ideal with no embedded primes we classify the normality of its symbolic Rees algebra in terms of its primary components. If the primary components of a monomial ideal are normal, we present a simple procedure to compute its symbolic Rees algebra using Hilbert bases, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for the equ…
Finite generation of the symbolic Rees ring of a space monomial prime ideal of a 3-dimensional weighted polynomial ring is a very interesting problem. Negative curves play important roles in finite generation of these rings. We are interested in the structure of the negative curve. We shall prove that negative curves are rational in many cases. We also see that the Cox ring of the blow-up of a toric variety at the point (1,1,...,1) coincides with the extended symbolic Rees ring of an ideal of a polynomial ring. For example, Roberts' second counterexample to Cowsik's question (and Hilbert's 14t…
Let G be a perfect graph and let J be its ideal of vertex covers. We show that the Rees algebra of J is normal and that this algebra is Gorenstein if G is unmixed. Then we give a description--in terms of cliques--of the symbolic Rees algebra and the Simis cone of the edge ideal of G.
In this paper, we estimate the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of the (extended) Rees algebras in terms of some invariants of the base ring. Also, we give an explicit formula for the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicities of Rees algebras over Veronese subrings.
Generalizing techniques that prove that Veronese subrings are Koszul, we show that Rees and multi-Rees algebras of certain types of principal strongly stable ideals are Koszul. We provide explicit Gröbner basis for the defining ideals of these multi-Rees algebras with squarefree initial monomials, to show that they are also normal Cohen-Macaulay domains.
There is given a characterization for the Rees algebras of parameters in a Gorenstein local ring to be almost Gorenstein graded rings. A characterization is also given for the Rees algebras of socle ideals of parameters. The latter one shows almost Gorenstein Rees algebras rather rarely exist for socle ideals, if the dimension of the base local ring is greater than two.
We deal with classes of prime ideals whose associated graded ring is isomorphic to the Rees algebra of the conormal module in order to describe the divisor class group of the Rees algebra and to examine the normality of the conormal module.
We study the symbolic powers of square-free monomial ideals via symbolic Rees algebras and methods in prime characteristic. In particular, we prove that the symbolic Rees algebra and the symbolic associated graded algebra are split with respect to a morphism which resembles the Frobenius map and that exists in all characteristics. Using these methods, we recover a result by Hoa and Trung which states that the normalized $a$-invariants and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the symbolic powers converge. In addition, we give a sufficient condition for the equality of the ordinary and symbolic…
The acquisition of the defining equations of Rees algebras is a natural way to study these algebras and allows certain invariants and properties to be deduced. In this paper, we consider Rees algebras of codimension 2 perfect ideals of hypersurface rings and produce a minimal generating set for their defining ideals. Then, using generic Bourbaki ideals, we study Rees algebras of modules with projective dimension one over hypersurface rings. We describe the defining ideal of such algebras and determine Cohen-Macaulayness and other invariants.
In this paper, we study the $F$-rationality of the Rees algebra and the extended Rees algebra of $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals in excellent local rings $(R, \mathfrak{m})$ of prime characteristic. We partially answer some conjectures and questions raised by N. Hara, K.-i. Watanabe and K.-i. Yoshida (J. Algebra, pp.153--190, vol 247, 2002).
Our aim in this paper is to obtain a formula for the multiplicity of the maximal homogeneous ideal of the multi-graded extended Rees algebra. This formula generalizes the one obtained in [8] by Katz and Verma for the ordinary extended Rees algebra.
We provide the sufficient conditions for Rees algebras of modules to be Cohen-Macaulay, which has been proven in the case of Rees algebras of ideals by Johnson-Ulrich and Goto-Nakamura-Nishida. As it turns out the generalization from ideals to modules is not just a routine generalization, but requires a great deal of technical development. We use the technique of generic Bourbaki ideals introduced by Simis, Ulrich and Vasconcelos to obtain the Cohen-Macaulayness of Rees Algebras of modules.
In this article, we compute the regularity of Rees algebra of binomial edge ideals of closed graphs. We obtain a lower bound for the regularity of Rees algebra of binomial edge ideals. We also study some algebraic properties of the Rees algebra and special fiber ring of binomial edge ideals of closed graphs via algebraic properties of their initial algebra and Sagbi basis theory. We obtain an upper bound for the regularity of the special fiber ring of binomial edge ideals of closed graphs.
We study the Rees algebra of a perfect Gorenstein ideal of codimension 3 in a hypersurface ring. We provide a minimal generating set of the defining ideal of these rings by introducing a modified Jacobian dual and applying a recursive algorithm. Once the defining equations are known, we explore properties of these Rees algebras such as Cohen-Macaulayness and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity.
