In this paper we show that the Rees algebra can be made into a functor on modules over a ring in a way that extends its classical definition for ideals. The Rees algebra of a module M may be computed in terms of a "maximal" map f from M to a free module. It is the image of the map induced by f on symmetric algebras. We show that the analytic spread and reductions of M can be determined from any embedding of M into a free module, and in characteristic 0--but not in positive characteristic!--the Rees algebra itself can be computed from any such embedding.
We show that several properties of the theory of Rees algebras of modules become more transparent using the category of coherent functors rather than working directly with modules. In particular, we show that the Rees algebra is induced by a canonical map of coherent functors.
We compute the canonical class of certain Rees algebras. Our formula generalizes that of Herzog and Vasconcelos. Its proof relies on the fact that the formation of the canonical module commutes with subintersections in important cases. As an application we treat the classical determinantal ideals and the corresponding algebras of minors.
This paper concerns a generalization of the Rees algebra of ideals due to Eisenbud, Huneke and Ulrich that works for any finitely generated module over a noetherian ring. Their definition is in terms of maps to free modules. We give an intrinsic definition using divided powers.
Let $I \subset R = \mathbb{F}[x_1,x_2]$ be a height two ideal minimally generated by three homogeneous polynomials of the same degree $d$, where $\mathbb{F}$ is a field of characteristic zero. We use the theory of $D$-modules to deduce information about the defining equations of the Rees algebra of $I$. Let $\mathcal{K}$ be the kernel of the canonical map $α: \text{Sym}(I) \rightarrow \text{Rees}(I)$ from the symmetric algebra of $I$ onto the Rees algebra of $I$. We prove that $\mathcal{K}$ can be described as the solution set of a system of differential equations, that the whole bigraded stru…
We deal with classes of prime ideals whose associated graded ring is isomorphic to the Rees algebra of the conormal module in order to describe the divisor class group of the Rees algebra and to examine the normality of the conormal module.
This paper shows that mixed multiplicities and the multiplicity of Rees modules of good filtrations and that of their reductions are the same. As an application of this result, we obtain interesting results on mixed multiplicities and the multiplicity of Rees modules.
We provide the sufficient conditions for Rees algebras of modules to be Cohen-Macaulay, which has been proven in the case of Rees algebras of ideals by Johnson-Ulrich and Goto-Nakamura-Nishida. As it turns out the generalization from ideals to modules is not just a routine generalization, but requires a great deal of technical development. We use the technique of generic Bourbaki ideals introduced by Simis, Ulrich and Vasconcelos to obtain the Cohen-Macaulayness of Rees Algebras of modules.
Let S be a standard N^r-graded algebra over a local ring A, and let M be a finitely generated Z^r-graded S-module. We characterize the Cohen-Macaulayness of M in terms of the vanishing of certain sheaf cohomology modules. As a consequence, we apply our result to study the Cohen-Macaulayness of multi-Rees modules (also called Rees modification). Our work extends previous studies on the Cohen-Macaulayness of multi-Rees algebras.
The acquisition of the defining equations of Rees algebras is a natural way to study these algebras and allows certain invariants and properties to be deduced. In this paper, we consider Rees algebras of codimension 2 perfect ideals of hypersurface rings and produce a minimal generating set for their defining ideals. Then, using generic Bourbaki ideals, we study Rees algebras of modules with projective dimension one over hypersurface rings. We describe the defining ideal of such algebras and determine Cohen-Macaulayness and other invariants.
Formulas are obtained in terms of complete reductions for the bigraded components of local cohomology modules of bigraded Rees algebras of 0-dimensional ideals in 2-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local rings. As a consequence, cohomological expressions for the coefficients of the Bhattacharya polynomial of such ideals are obtained.
The aim of this work is to study the ring-theoretic properties of the diagonals of a Rees algebra, which from a geometric point of view are the homogeneous coordinate rings of embeddings of blow-ups of projective varieties along a subvariety. In Chapter 1 we extend the definitions and results about the biprojective scheme and the Hilbert polynomial of finitely generated bigraded modules defined over standard bigraded k-algebras to finitely generated bigraded S-modules, for S=k[X_1,..., X_n,Y_1,...,Y_r] the polynomial ring bigraded by deg X_i=(1,0), deg Y_j=(d_j,1), d_j \geq 0. We also relate t…
Generic Bourbaki ideals were introduced by Simis, Ulrich and Vasconcelos to study the Cohen-Macaulay property of Rees algebras of modules. In this article we prove that the same technique can sometimes be used to investigate the Cohen-Macaulay property of fiber cones of modules and to study the defining ideal of Rees algebras. This is possible as long as the Rees algebra of a given module $E$ is a deformation of the Rees algebra of a generic Bourbaki ideal $I$ of $E$. Our main technical result provides a deformation condition that in fact extends the applicability of generic Bourbaki ideals to…
Let $R$ be an algebra essentially of finite type over a field $k$ and let $Ω_k(R)$ be its module of Kähler differentials over $k$. If $R$ is a homogeneous complete intersection and $\mathrm{char}(k)=0$, we prove that $Ω_k(R)$ is of linear type whenever its Rees algebra is Cohen-Macaulay and locally at every homogeneous prime $\mathfrak{p}$ the embedding dimension of $R_{\mathfrak{p}}$ is at most twice its dimension.
We provide a class of commutative Noetherian domains $R$ of dimension $d$ such that every finitely generated projective $R$-module $P$ of rank $d$ splits off a free summand of rank one. On this class, we also show that $P$ is cancellative. At the end we give some applications to the number of generators of a module over the Rees algebras.
Let R be a commutative ring and let G be a free R-module with positive rank e. For any R-submodule E of G we may consider the image of the symmetric algebra of E by the natural map to the symmetric algebra of G, and then the graded components E_n of the image, that we call the n-th Rees powers of E. In this work we prove some asymptotic properties of the modules E_n, which extend well known similar ones for the case of ideals, among them Burch's inequality for the analytic spread.
In this paper, we consider a finite, torsion-free module $E$ over a Gorenstein local ring. We provide sufficient conditions for $E$ to be of linear type and for the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(E)$ of $E$ to be Cohen-Macaulay. Our results are obtained by constructing a generic Bourbaki $I$ ideal of $E$ and exploiting properties of the residual intersections of $I$.
We consider a rational map $ϕ: \mathbb{P}_k^{m} \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}_k^n$ that is a parameterization of an $m$-dimensional variety. Our main goal is to study the $(m-1)$-dimensional fibers of $ϕ$ in relation to the $m$-th local cohomology modules of the Rees algebra of its base ideal.
Consider a height two ideal, $I$, which is minimally generated by $m$ homogeneous forms of degree $d$ in the polynomial ring $R=k[x,y]$. Suppose that one column in the homogeneous presenting matrix $\f$ of $I$ has entries of degree $n$ and all of the other entries of $\f$ are linear. We identify an explicit generating set for the ideal $\Cal A$ which defines the Rees algebra $\Cal R=R[It]$; so $\Cal R=S/\Cal A$ for the polynomial ring $S=R[T_1,...,T_m]$. We resolve $\Cal R$ as an $S$-module and $I^s$ as an $R$-module, for all powers $s$. The proof uses the homogeneous coordinate ring, $A=S/H$,…
Let $(R,m)$ be a local Noetherian ring, let $M$ be a finitely generated $R$-module and let $(F_{\bullet},\partial_{\bullet})$ be a free resolution of $M$. We find a uniform bound $h$ such that the Artin-Rees containment $I^n F_i\cap Im \, \partial_{i+1} \subseteq I^{n-h} Im \, \partial_{i+1}$ holds for all integers $i\ge d$, for all integers $n\ge h$, and for all ideals $I$ of $R$. In fact, we show that a considerably stronger statement holds. The uniform bound $h$ holds for all ideals and all resolutions of $d$th syzygy modules. In order to prove our statements, we introduce the concept of Ko…
We find conditions on the local cohomology modules of multi-Rees algebras of admissible filtrations which enable us to predict joint reduction numbers. As a consequence we are able to prove a generalisation of a result of Reid-Roberts-Vitulli in the setting of analytically unramified local rings for completeness of power products of complete ideals.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of Ratliff-Rush closure of modules and explore whether the condition of the Ratliff-Rush closure coincides with the integral closure. The main result characterizes the condition in terms of the normality of the projective scheme of the Rees algebra, which generalizes the result of S. Goto and N. Matsuoka. In conclusion, we shall give a criterion for the Buchsbaum Rees algebras.
The Sally module of a Rees algebra $\BB$ relative to one of its Rees subalgebras $Å$ is a construct that can be used as a mediator for the trade-off of cohomological (e.g. depth) information between $\BB$ and the corresponding associated graded ring for several types of filtrations. While originally devised to deal with filtrations of finite colength, here we treat aspects of these developments for filtrations in higher dimensions as well.
The aim of this paper is to study integer rounding properties of various systems of linear inequalities to gain insight about the algebraic properties of Rees algebras of monomial ideals and monomial subrings. We study the normality and Gorenstein property--as well as the canonical module and the a-invariant--of Rees algebras and subrings arising from systems with the integer rounding property. We relate the algebraic properties of Rees algebras and monomial subrings with integer rounding properties and present a duality theorem.
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero, and $R=k[x_1, \ldots, x_d]$ with $d \geq 3$ be a polynomial ring in $d$ variables. Let $\m=(x_1, \ldots, x_d)$ be the homogeneous maximal ideal of $R$. Let $\mathcal{K}$ be the kernel of the canonical map $α: \sym(I) \rightarrow \R(I)$, where $\sym(I)$ (resp. $\R(I)$) denotes the symmetric algebra (resp. the Rees algebra) of an ideal $I$ in $R$. We study $\mathcal{K}$ when $I$ is a height two perfect ideal minimally generated by $d+1$ homogeneous elements of same degree and satisfies $G_d$, that is, the minimal number of generators of the ideal $I_{\m…
A new approach is established to computing the image of a rational map, whereby the use of approximation complexes is complemented with a detailed analysis of the torsion of the symmetric algebra in certain degrees. In the case the map is everywhere defined this analysis provides free resolutions of graded parts of the Rees algebra of the base ideal in degrees where it does not coincide with the corresponding symmetric algebra. A surprising fact is that the torsion in those degrees only contributes to the first free module in the resolution of the symmetric algebra modulo torsion. An additiona…
Let (A, m) be a Noetherian local ring and N a parameter module in F=A^r and M=N:_F m the socle module of N. In this paper, we shall prove that the module M=N:_F m has a reduction number at most one and hence its Rees algebra R(M) is Cohen-Macaulay, if the base ring A is Cohen-Macaulay of dimension two and the rank of N is greater than or equal to two. This result gives numerous examples of Cohen-Macaulay Rees algebras of modules, which are not integrally closed and not a parameter module.
The Grothendieck-Serre formula for the difference between the Hilbert function and Hilbert polynomial of a graded algebra is generalized for bigraded standard algebras. This is used to get a similar formula for the difference between the Bhattacharya function and Bhattacharya polynomial of two m-primary ideals I and J in a local ring (A,m) in terms of local cohomology modules of Rees algebras of I and J. The cohomology of a variation of the Kirby-Mehran complex for bigraded Rees algebras is studied which is used to characterize the Cohen-Macaulay property of bigraded Rees algebra of I and J fo…
For an ideal I in a regular local ring (R,m)$ with residue class field K = R/m or a standard graded K-algebra R we show that for k >> 0 --> the Artin--Rees number of the syzygy modules of I^k as submodules of the free modules from a free resolution is constant, and thereby present the Artin-Rees number as a proper replacement of regularity in the local situation, --> the ring R/I^k is Golod, its Poincer{é}-Betti series is rational and the Betti numbers of the free resolution of K over R/I^k are polynomials in k of a specific degree. The first result is an extension of work of Kodiyalam and Cut…
Let $I$ be an ideal whose symbolic Rees algebra is Noetherian. For $m \geq 1$, the $m$-th symbolic defect, sdefect$(I,m)$, of $I$ is defined to be the minimal number of generators of the module $\frac{I^{(m)}}{I^m}$. We prove that sdefect$(I,m)$ is eventually quasi-polynomial as a function in $m$. We compute the symbolic defect explicitly for certain monomial ideals arising from graphs, termed cover ideals. We go on to give a formula for the Waldschmidt constant, an asymptotic invariant measuring the growth of the degrees of generators of symbolic powers, for ideals whose symbolic Rees algebra…
In a previous paper we exhibited the somewhat surprising property that most direct links of prime ideals in Gorenstein rings are equimultiple ideals with reduction number $1$. This led to the construction of large families of Cohen--Macaulay Rees algebras. The first goal of this paper is to extend this result to arbitrary Cohen--Macaulay rings. The means of the proof are changed since one cannot depend so heavily on linkage theory. We then study the structure of the Rees algebra of these links, more specifically we describe their canonical module in sufficient detail to be able to characterize…
In this thesis we are interested in studying algebraic properties of monomial algebras, that can be linked to combinatorial structures, such as graphs and clutters, and to optimization problems. A goal here is to establish bridges between commutative algebra, combinatorics and optimization. We study the normality and the Gorenstein property-as well as the canonical module and the a-invariant-of Rees algebras and subrings arising from linear optimization problems. In particular, we study algebraic properties of edge ideals and algebras associated to uniform clutters with the max-flow min-cut pr…
Let $A$ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring with $\operatorname{dim} A = d\ge 3$, possessing the canonical module ${\mathrm K}_A$. Let $a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_r$ $(3 \le r \le d)$ be a subsystem of parameters of $A$ and set $Q= (a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_r)$. It is shown that if the Rees algebra ${\mathcal R}(Q)$ of $Q$ is an almost Gorenstein graded ring, then $A$ is a regular local ring and $a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_r$ is a part of a regular system of parameters of $A$.
In this paper, we obtain a generalization, in dimension $3$, of a theorem of David Rees about joint reductions of the bigraded filtration $\{ \overline{I^rJ^s}\}$ of complete ${\mathfrak m}$-primary ideals and vanishing of the second normal Hilbert coefficient $\overline{e}_2(IJ)$ where $R$ is a two-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay analytically unramified local ring with maximal ideal $\mathfrak m.$ This generalization is obtained as a consequence of a formula for the third local cohomology module of the extended Rees algebras of the $\mathbb Z^3$-graded filtration $\{\overline{I^rJ^sK^t}\}$ with su…
We prove that the Hilbert-Kunz function of the ideal $(I,It)$ of the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(I)$, where $I$ is an $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal of a $1$-dimensional local ring $(R,\mathfrak{m})$, is a quasi-polynomial in $e$, for large $e.$ For $s \in \mathbb{N}$, we calculate the Hilbert-Samuel function of the $R$-module $I^{[s]}$ and obtain an explicit description of the generalized Hilbert-Kunz function of the ideal $(I,It)\mathcal{R}(I)$ when $I$ is a parameter ideal in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of dimension $d \geq 2$, proving that the generalized Hilbert-Kunz function is a piecewise p…
Recently, Peeva and the second author constructed irreducible projective varieties with regularity much larger than their degree, yielding counterexamples to the Eisenbud-Goto Conjecture. Their construction involved two new ideas: Rees-like algebras and step-by-step homogenization. Yet, all of these varieties are singular and the nature of the geometry of these projective varieties was left open. The purpose of this paper is to study the singularities inherent in this process. We compute the codimension of the singular locus of an arbitrary Rees-like algebra over a polynomial ring. We then sho…
In this note, we consider a situation that is generally used as an intermediate technical step in proving the Artin-Rees lemma but otherwise is not much discussed in introductory accounts of commutative algebra. I hope to show in this note that such technical step deserves more recognition and emphasis in any introduction to commutative algebra because it can be used to prove some significant results in a straight-forward manner, including a generalization of a theorem by Pierre Cartier and John Tate.
We prove new results on the connections between reduction numbers and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of blowup algebras and blowup modules, the key basic tool being the operation of Ratliff-Rush closure. First, we answer in two particular cases a question of M. E. Rossi, D. T. Trung, and N. V. Trung about Rees algebras of ideals in two-dimensional Buchsbaum local rings, and we even ask whether one of such situations always holds. In another theorem we generalize a result of A. Mafi on ideals in two-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local rings, by extending it to arbitrary dimension (and allowing…
A pair of ideals $J\subseteq I\subseteq R$ has been called Aluffi torsion-free if the Aluffi algebra of $I/J$ is isomorphic with the corresponding Rees algebra. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the Aluffi torsion-free property in terms of the first syzygy module of the form ideal $J^*$ in the associated graded ring of $I$. For two pairs of ideals $J_1,J_2\subseteq I$ such that $J_1-J_2\in I^2$, we prove that if one pair is Aluffi torsion-free the other one is so if and only if the first syzygy modules of $J_1$ and $J_2$ have the same form ideals. We introduce the notion of stron…
Virtual resolutions are homological representations of finitely generated $\text{Pic}(X)$-graded modules over the Cox ring of a smooth projective toric variety. In this paper, we identify two algebraic conditions that characterize when a chain complex of graded free modules over the Cox ring is a virtual resolution. We then turn our attention to the saturation of Fitting ideals by the irrelevant ideal of the Cox ring and prove some results that mirror the classical theory of Fitting ideals for Noetherian rings.
We describe Koszul type complexes associated with a linear map from any module to a free module, and vice versa with a linear map from a free module to an arbitrary module, generalizing the classical Koszul complexes. Given a short complex of finite free modules, we assemble these complexes to what we call Koszul bicomplexes. They are used in order to investigate the homology of the Koszul complexes in projective dimension one. As in the case of the classical Koszul complexes this homology turns out to be grade sensitive. In a special setup we obtain necessary conditions for a map of free modu…
Let $Q\in \K[x_1,...,x_n] = S$ be a homogeneous polynomial of degree $d$. The freeness of the logarithmic derivation module, $D(Q)$, and of its natural generalizations, has been widely studied. In the free case, $D(Q) \simeq \bigoplus_{i=1}^n S(-d_i)$ where the $d_i$'s are the exponents of the module; and as a direct consequence of the Saito-Ziegler criterion, the formula $d = \sum_i d_i$ holds. In this paper we give a generalization of this formula in the non-free case. Moreover, we show that an equivalent formula is also true in the quasi-homogeneous case, and show to what extent it can be g…
Let $R$ be a general ring. Duality pairs of $R$-modules were introduced by Holm-Jorgensen. Most examples satisfy further properties making them what we call semi-complete duality pairs in this paper. We attach a relative theory of Gorenstein homological algebra to any given semi-complete duality pair $\mathfrak{D} = (\mathcal{L},\mathcal{A})$. This generalizes the homological theory of the AC-Gorenstein modules defined by Bravo-Gillespie-Hovey, and we apply this to other semi-complete duality pairs. The main application is that the Ding injective modules are the right side of a complete (perfe…
