Let (A, m) be a Noetherian local ring and N a parameter module in F=A^r and M=N:_F m the socle module of N. In this paper, we shall prove that the module M=N:_F m has a reduction number at most one and hence its Rees algebra R(M) is Cohen-Macaulay, if the base ring A is Cohen-Macaulay of dimension two and the rank of N is greater than or equal to two. This result gives numerous examples of Cohen-Macaulay Rees algebras of modules, which are not integrally closed and not a parameter module.
This paper shows that mixed multiplicities and the multiplicity of Rees modules of good filtrations and that of their reductions are the same. As an application of this result, we obtain interesting results on mixed multiplicities and the multiplicity of Rees modules.
We study the relationship between the reduction number of a primary ideal of a local ring relative to one of its minimal reductions and the multiplicity of the corresponding Sally module. This paper is focused on three goals: (i) To develop a change of rings technique for the Sally module of an ideal to allow extension of results from Cohen-Macaulay rings to more general rings. (ii) To use the fiber of the Sally modules of almost complete intersection ideals to connect its structure to the Cohen-Macaulayness of the special fiber ring. (iii) To extend some of the results of (i) to two-dimension…
Let $(R, \mathfrak m)$ be a Noetherian local ring. In this work we use the notion of (FC)-sequences, as defined in \cite{perez-bedregal1}, to present some results concerning reductions and the positivity of mixed multiplicities of a finite collection of arbitrary submodules of $R^p.$ We also investigate the length of maximal (FC)-sequences. We actually work in the more general context of standard graded $R$-algebras.
Let $(R, \mathfrak m)$ be a $d$-dimensional Noetherian local ring and $E$ a finitely generated $R$-submodule of a free module $R^p.$ In this work we introduce a multiplicity sequence $c_k(E), k=0,..., d+p-1$ for $E$ that generalize the Buchsbaum-Rim multiplicity defined when $E$ has finite colength in $R^p$ as well as the Achilles-Manaresi multiplicity sequence that applies when $E\subseteq R$ is an ideal. Our main result is that the new multiplicity sequence can indeed be used to detect integral dependence of modules. Our proof is self-contained and implies known numerical criteria for integr…
We prove new results on the connections between reduction numbers and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of blowup algebras and blowup modules, the key basic tool being the operation of Ratliff-Rush closure. First, we answer in two particular cases a question of M. E. Rossi, D. T. Trung, and N. V. Trung about Rees algebras of ideals in two-dimensional Buchsbaum local rings, and we even ask whether one of such situations always holds. In another theorem we generalize a result of A. Mafi on ideals in two-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local rings, by extending it to arbitrary dimension (and allowing…
In this paper, we give a way to construct graded filtrations of graded modules. We then apply it to the Sally module, which describes a correction term of the Hilbert function. As a result, we obtain the inequality of the Hilbert coefficients for ideals of reduction number $2$ or $3$.
Let $R$ be a standard graded algebra over an infinite field $\mathbb{K}$ and $M$ a finitely generated $\ZZ$-graded $R$-module. Let $I_1,\ldots I_m$ be graded ideals of $R$. The functions $r(M/I_1^{a_1}\ldots I_m^{a_m}M)$ and $r(I_1^{a_1}\ldots I_m^{a_m}M)$ are investigated and their asymptotical behaviours are given. Here $r(\bullet)$ stands for the reduction number of a finitely graded module $\bullet$.
We prove that certain modules are faithful. This enables us to draw consequences about the reduction number and the integral closure of some classes of ideals.
In \cite{rees} Rees gave a characterization for the normal joint reduction number zero of two $\m$-primary ideals in an analytically unramified Cohen-Macaulay local ring of dimension two. Rees' result is a generalization of Zariski's product theorem for complete ideals in a regular local ring of dimension two. The aim of this paper is to extend Rees' theorem for the ordinary powers of $\m$-primary ideals $I$ and $J$ in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of dimension two. Following Rees' approach, we define the modified Koszul homology modules $M^1_{r,s}(a^k,b^k)$ for a joint reduction $(a,b)$ of $I$ …
Formulas are obtained in terms of complete reductions for the bigraded components of local cohomology modules of bigraded Rees algebras of 0-dimensional ideals in 2-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local rings. As a consequence, cohomological expressions for the coefficients of the Bhattacharya polynomial of such ideals are obtained.
We study the depth properties of the associated graded ring of an m-primary ideal I in terms of numerical data attached to the ideal I. We also find bounds on the Hilbert coefficients of I by means of the Sally module S_J(I) of I with respect to a minimal reduction J of I.
Let A be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of dimension d and I an ideal in A. Let M be a finitely generated maximal Cohen-Macaulay A-module. Let I be a locally complete intersection ideal of analytic deviation one and reduction number at most one. We prove that the polynomial given by $length(Tor^{A}_{1}(M,A/I^{n+1}))$ either has degree d-1 or $F_I(M) $ is a free$F(I)-$$module.
We find conditions on the local cohomology modules of multi-Rees algebras of admissible filtrations which enable us to predict joint reduction numbers. As a consequence we are able to prove a generalisation of a result of Reid-Roberts-Vitulli in the setting of analytically unramified local rings for completeness of power products of complete ideals.
Let A be a commutative ring and I an ideal of A with a reduction Q. In this paper we give an upper bound on the reduction number of I with respect to Q, when a suitable family of ideals in A is given. As a corollary it follows that if some ideal J containing I satisfies J^2 = QJ, then I^{v + 2} = QI^{v + 1}, where v denotes the number of generators of J / I as an A-module.
This paper aims to provide several relations between Bass and Betti numbers of a given module and its deficiency modules. Such relations and the tools used throughout allow us to generalize some results of Foxby, characterize Cohen-Macaulay modules in equidimensionality terms and furnish a case for the Auslander-Reiten conjecture.
The core of an module is the intersection of all its reductions. The main result asserts that the core of a finitely generated, torsion-free, integrally closed module over a two dimensional regular local ring is the product of the module and the adjoint of an ideal. This generalizes the fundamental formula for the core of an integrally closed ideal in a two-dimensional regular local ring due to Huneke and Swanson. As an application, we show that for integrally closed modules $M$ and $N$ over a two-dimensional regular local ring with $M\subset N$ and $M^{**}=N^{**}$, the core of $M$ is containe…
The reductions of an ideal $I$ give a natural pathway to the properties of $I$, with the advantage of having fewer generators. In this paper we primarily focus on a conjecture about the reduction exponent of links of a broad class of primary ideals. The existence of an algebra structure on the Koszul and Eagon-Northcott resolutions is the main tool for detailing the known cases of the conjecture. In the last section we relate the conjecture to a formula involving the length of the first Koszul homology modules of these ideals.
This paper presents an algorithm for calculation of the Lyubeznik numbers of a local ring which is a homomorphic image of a regular local ring $R$ of prime characteristic. The methods used employ Lyubeznik's $F$-modules over $R$, particularly his $F$-finite $F$-modules, and also the modules of generalized fractions of Sharp and Zakeri. It is shown that many modules of generalized fractions over $R$ have natural structures as $F$-modules; these lead to $F$-module structures on certain local cohomology modules over $R$, which are exploited, in conjunction with $F$-module structures on injective …
In this paper, we give a characterization of co-Cohen Macaulay modules by vanishing properties of the dual Bass numbers of modules. In addition, we show that the co-localization of co-Cohen Macaulay modules preserves co-Cohen Macaulayness under a certain condition.
We study $h$-vectors and graded Betti numbers of level modules up to multiplication by a rational number. Assuming a conjecture on the possible graded Betti numbers of Cohen-Macaulay modules we get a description of the possible $h$-vectors of level modules up to multiplication by a rational number. We also determine, again up to multiplication by a rational number, the cancellable $h$-vectors and the $h$-vectors of level modules with the weak Lefschetz property. Furthermore, we prove that level modules of codimension three satisfy the upper bound of the Multiplicity conjecture of Herzog, Hunek…
Let $(A, \frak m)$ be a noetherian local ring with maximal ideal $\frak{m}$ and infinite residue field $k = A/\frak{m}.$ Let $J$ be an $\frak m$-primary ideal, $I_1,...,I_s$ ideals of $A$, and $M$ a finitely generated $A$-module. In this paper, we interpret mixed multiplicities of $(I_1,..., I_s,J)$ with respect to $M$ as multiplicities of joint reductions of them. This generalizes the Rees's theorem on mixed multiplicity (Theorem 2.4). As an application we show that mixed multiplicities are also multiplicities of Rees's superficial sequences.
This paper gives a sharp upper bound for the Betti numbers of a finitely generated multigraded $R$-module, where $R=\Bbbk [x_{1},...,x_{m}]$ is the polynomial ring over a field $\Bbbk$ in $m$ variables. The bound is given in terms of the rank and the first two Betti numbers of the module. An example is given which achieves these bounds simultaneously in each homological degree. Using Alexander duality, a bound is established for the total multigraded Bass numbers of a finite multigraded module in terms of the first two total multigraded Bass numbers.
In this note, it is proved that over a commutative noetherian henselian non-Gorenstein local ring there are infinitely many isomorphism classes of indecomposable totally reflexive modules, if there is a nonfree cyclic totally reflexive module.
In this note we study trace ideals of canonical modules. Characterizations of the trace ideals in terms of annihilators of certain Ext modules are given. We apply our results to study many classes of rings close to being Gorenstein that appear in recent literature. We discuss the behavior of nearly Gorensteinness, introduced by Herzog-Hibi-Stamate, under reductions by regular sequences. A nearly Gorenstein version of the Tachikawa conjecture is posed, and an affirmative answer given for type 2 rings. We also introduce the class of weakly almost Gorenstein rings using the canonical module, and …
Given a local Noetherian ring $(R, {\mathfrak m})$ of dimension $d>0$ and infinite residue field, we study the invariants $($dimension and multiplicity$)$ of the Sally module $S_J(I)$ of any ${\mathfrak m}$-primary ideal $I$ with respect to a minimal reduction $J$. As a by-product we obtain an estimate for the Hilbert coefficients of ${\mathfrak m}$ that generalizes a bound established by J. Elias and G. Valla in a local Cohen-Macaulay setting. We also find sharp estimates for the multiplicity of the special fiber ring ${\mathcal F}(I)$, which recover previous bounds established by C. Polini, …
We define Macaulay bases of modules, which are a common generalization of Groebner bases and Macaulay $H$-bases to suitably graded modules over a commutative graded $\mathbf{k}$-algebra, where the index sets of the two gradings may differ. This includes Groebner bases of modules as a special case, in contrast to previous work on Macaulay bases of modules. We show that the standard results on Groebner bases and Macaulay $H$-bases generalize in fields of arbitrary characteristic to Macaulay bases, including the reduction algorithm and Buchberger's criterion and algorithm. A key result is that Ma…
We study functors underlying derived Hochschild cohomology, also called Shukla cohomology, of a commutative algebra S essentially of finite type and of finite flat dimension over a commutative noetherian ring K. We construct a complex of S-modules D, and natural reduction isomorphisms Ext^*_{S\otimes^L_{K}S}(S|K;M\otimes^L_{K}N) ~ Ext^*_S(RHom_S(M,D),N) for all complexes of S-modules N and all complexes M of finite flat dimension over K whose homology H(M) is finitely generated over S; such isomorphisms determine D up to derived isomorphism. Using Grothendieck duality theory we establish analo…
D. Bayer and M. Stillman showed that Grobner bases can be used to compute the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, which is a measure for the vanishing of graded local cohomology modules. The aim of this paper is to show that the same method can be applied to study other cohomological invariants as well as the reduction number.
In this paper we define and study triangulated categories in which the Hom-spaces have Krull dimension at most one over some base ring (hence they have a natural 2-step filtration), and each factor of the filtration satisfies some Calabi-Yau type property. If C is such a category, we say that C is Calabi-Yau with dimension at most one. We extend the notion of Calabi-Yau reduction to this setting, and prove general results which are an analogue of known results in cluster theory. Such categories appear naturally in the setting of Gorenstein singularities in dimension three as the stable categor…
In this paper we show that the Rees algebra can be made into a functor on modules over a ring in a way that extends its classical definition for ideals. The Rees algebra of a module M may be computed in terms of a "maximal" map f from M to a free module. It is the image of the map induced by f on symmetric algebras. We show that the analytic spread and reductions of M can be determined from any embedding of M into a free module, and in characteristic 0--but not in positive characteristic!--the Rees algebra itself can be computed from any such embedding.
We present a constructive description of minimal reductions with a given reduction number. This description has interesting consequences on the minimal reduction number, the big reduction number, and the core of an ideal. In particular, it helps solve a conjecture of Vasconcelos on the relationship between reduction numbers and initial ideals.
Let $S$ be a polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$ of characteristic $0$. A numerical characterization of all possible extremal Betti numbers of any graded submodule of a finitely generated graded free $S$-module is given.
