In this note, it is proved that over a commutative noetherian henselian non-Gorenstein local ring there are infinitely many isomorphism classes of indecomposable totally reflexive modules, if there is a nonfree cyclic totally reflexive module.
A few years ago, Huneke and Leuschke proved a theorem which solved a conjecture of Schreyer. It asserts that an excellent Cohen-Macaulay local ring of countable Cohen-Macaulay type which is complete or has uncountable residue field has at most a one-dimensional singular locus. In this paper, it is verified that the assumption of the excellent property can be removed, and the theorem is considered over an arbitrary local ring. The main purpose of this paper is to prove that the existence of a certain prime ideal and a certain totally reflexive module implies the existence of an uncountably infi…
For a standard graded Cohen-Macaulay ring $S$, if the quotient $S/(\underline{x})$ admits non-free totally reflexive modules, where $\underline{x}$ is a system of parameters consisting of elements of degree one, then so does the ring $S$. As an application, we consider the question of which Stanley-Reisner rings of graphs admit non-free totally reflexive modules.
We study Cohen-Macaulay non-Gorenstein local rings $(R,\mathfrak{m},k)$ admitting certain totally reflexive modules. More precisely, we give a description of the Poincaré series of $k$ by using the Poincaré series of a non-zero totally reflexive module with minimal multiplicity. Our results generalize a result of Yoshino to higher-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local rings. Moreover, from a quasi-Gorenstein ideal satisfying some conditions, we construct a family of non-isomorphic indecomposable totally reflexive modules having an arbitrarily large minimal number of generators.
We define, via Gorenstein homomorphisms, a class of local rings over which there exist non-trivial totally reflexive modules. We also provide a general construction of such rings, which indicates their abundance.
Let $S$ be a deeply embedded, equicharacteristic, Artinian Gorenstein local ring. We prove that if $R$ is a non-Gorenstein quotient of $S$ of small colength, then every totally reflexive $R$-module is free. Indeed, the second syzygy of the canonical module of $R$ has a direct summand $T$ which is a test module for freeness over $R$ in the sense that if $\mathrm{Tor}_+^R(T,N)=0$, for some finitely generated $R$-module $N$, then $N$ is free.
Starting from the notion of totally reflexive modules, we survey the theory of Gorenstein homological dimensions for modules over commutative rings. The account includes the theory's connections with relative homological algebra and with studies of local ring homomorphisms. It ends close to the starting point: with a characterization of Gorenstein rings in terms of total acyclicity of complexes.
Let A be a local ring which admits an exact pair x,y of zero divisors as defined by Henriques and Sega. Assuming that this pair is regular and that there exists a regular element on the A-module A/(x,y), we explicitly construct an infinite family of non-isomorphic indecomposable totally reflexive A-modules. In this setting, our construction provides an answer to a question raised by Christensen, Piepmeyer, Striuli, and Takahashi. Furthermore, we compute the module of homomorphisms between any two given modules from the infinite family mentioned above.
Let (R,m,k) be a local ring. We establish a totally reflexive analogue of the New Intersection Theorem, provided for every totally reflexive R-module M, there is a big Cohen-Macaulay R-module B_M such that the socle of B_M\otimes_RM is zero. When R is a quasi-specialization of a G-regular local ring or when M has complete intersection dimension zero, we show the existence of such a big Cohen-Macaulay R-module. It is conjectured that if R admits a non-zero Cohen-Macaulay module of finite Gorenstein dimension, then it is Cohen-Macaulay. We prove this conjecture if either R is a quasi-specializat…
In this paper, we will introduce a subcategory of totally reflexive modules that have a saturated filtration by other totally reflexive modules. We will prove these are precisely the totally reflexive modules with an upper-triangular presentation matrix. We conclude with an investigation of the ranks of $\operatorname{Ext}^1$ of two such modules over a specific ring.
In this paper we study orders over Cohen-Macaulay rings. We discuss desirable properties for these orders if they are to represent NCCRs of the base rings. While some definitions have been made, we discuss an alternate definition and the non-existence of examples. We then give necessary and sufficient conditions for an order to have certain desirable homological properties. We examine examples of rings satisfying these properties to prove that certain endormorphism rings over abelian quotient singularities have infinite global dimension.
In this paper, from an arbitrary smooth projective curve of genus at least two, we construct a non-Gorenstein Cohen-Macaulay normal domain and a nonfree totally reflexive module over it.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian local ring. Assume that $R$ has a pair $\{x,y\}$ of exact zerodivisors such that $\dim R/(x,y)\ge2$ and all totally reflexive $R/(x)$-modules are free. We show that the first and second Brauer--Thrall type theorems hold for the category of totally reflexive $R$-modules. More precisely, we prove that, for infinitely many integers $n$, there exists an indecomposable totally reflexive $R$-module of multiplicity $n$. Moreover, if the residue field of $R$ is infinite, we prove that there exist infinitely many isomorphism classes of indecomposable totally reflexiv…
Let R be a commutative noetherian local ring that is not Gorenstein. It is known that the category of totally reflexive modules over R is representation infinite, provided that it contains a non-free module. The main goal of this paper is to understand how complex the category of totally reflexive modules can be in this situation. Local rings (R,m) with m^3=0 are commonly regarded as the structurally simplest rings to admit diverse categorical and homological characteristics. For such rings we obtain conclusive results about the category of totally reflexive modules, modeled on the Brauer-Thra…
In the present paper we investigate reflexive modules over the endomorphism algebras of reflexive trace ideals in a one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local ring. The main theorem generalizes both of the results of S. Goto, N. Matsuoka, and T. T. Phuong and T. Kobayashi concerning the endomorphism algebra of its maximal ideal. We also explore the question of when the category of reflexive modules is of finite type, i.e., the base ring has only finitely many isomorphism classes of indecomposable reflexive modules. We show that, if the category is of finite type, the ring is analytically unramified …
We consider local non-Gorenstein rings of the form $(S_i,\mathfrak{n}_i)=k[X, Y_1, \ldots ,Y_i]/\left(X^2, (Y_1, \ldots, Y_i)^2\right), $ where $i\geq 2.$ We show that every totally reflexive $S_i$-module has a presentation matrix of the form $I x + \sum_{j=1}^i B_j y_j, $ where $I$ is the identity matrix and $B_j$ is an square matrix with entries in the residue field, $k$. From there, we prove that there exists a bijection between the set of isomorphism classes of totally reflexive modules (without projective summands) over $S_i$ which are minimal generated by $n$ elements and the set of $i$-…
In two recent papers (math.LO/0003164 and math.LO/0003165) we answered a question raised in the book by Eklof and Mekler (p. 455, Problem 12) under the set theoretical hypothesis of diamondsuit_{aleph_1} which holds in many models of set theory, respectively of the special continuum hypothesis (CH). The objects are reflexive modules over countable principal ideal domains R, which are not fields. Following H.Bass, an R-module G is reflexive if the evaluation map s:G ---> G^{**} is an isomorphism. Here G^*=Hom(G,R) denotes the dual module of G. We proved the existence of reflexive R-modules G of…
Let R be a commutative noetherian local ring and consider the set of isomorphism classes of indecomposable totally reflexive R-modules. We prove that if this set is finite, then either it has exactly one element, represented by the rank 1 free module, or R is Gorenstein and an isolated singularity (if R is complete, then it is even a simple hypersurface singularity). The crux of our proof is to argue that if the residue field has a totally reflexive cover, then R is Gorenstein or every totally reflexive R-module is free.
We prove a tight connection between reflexive modules over a one-dimensional ring $R$ and its birational extensions that are self-dual as $R$-modules. Consequently, we show that a complete local reduced Arf ring has finitely many indecomposable reflexive modules up to isomorphism, which can be represented precisely by the local rings infinitely near it. We also characterize Arf rings by the property that any reflexive module is self-dual. We give applications on dimension of subcategories and existence of endomorphism rings of small global dimension (non-commutative desingularizations). Our re…
In this paper, we aim to obtain some results under the condition that the dual of a module over a commutative Noetherian ring has finite Gorenstein dimension. In this direction, we derive results involving vanishing of Ext as well as the freeness or totally reflexivity of modules. For instance, we provide a generalization of a celebrated theorem by Auslander and Bridger, obtain criteria for the totally reflexivity of modules over Cohen-Macaulay rings as well as of locally totally reflexive modules on the punctured spectrum, and recover a result by Araya. Moreover, we prove that the Auslander-R…
Let R be a commutative Noetherian local ring with residue field k. Let X be a resolving subcategory of finitely generated R-modules. This paper mainly studies when X contains k or consists of totally reflexive modules. It is proved that X does so if X is closed under cosyzygies. A conjecture of Dao and Takahashi is also shown to hold in several cases.
Let $Λ$ be a left and right noetherian ring. First, for $m,n\in\mathbb{N}\cup\{\infty\}$, we give equivalent conditions for a given $Λ$-module to be $n$-torsionfree and have $m$-torsionfree transpose. Using them, we investigate totally reflexive modules and reducing Gorenstein dimension. Next, we introduce homological invariants for $Λ$-modules which we call upper reducing projective and Gorenstein dimensions. We provide an inequality of upper reducing projective dimension and complexity when $Λ$ is commutative and local. Using it, we consider how upper reducing projective dimension relates to…
Contravariantly finite resolving subcategories of the category of finitely generated modules have been playing an important role in the representation theory of algebras. In this paper we study contravariantly finite resolving subcategories over commutative rings. The main purpose of this paper is to classify contravariantly finite resolving subcategories over a henselian Gorenstein local ring; in fact there exist only three ones. Our method to obtain this classification also recovers as a by-product the theorem of Christensen, Piepmeyer, Striuli and Takahashi concerning the relationship betwe…
Following the well-established terminology in commutative algebra, any (not necessarily commutative) finite-dimensional local algebra $A$ with radical $J$ will be said to be short provided $J^3 = 0$. As in the commutative case, we show: if a short local algebra $A$ has an indecomposable non-projective Gorenstein-projective module $M$, then either $A$ is self-injective (so that all modules are Gorenstein-projective) and then $|J^2| \le 1$, or else $|J^2| = |J/J^2| - 1$ and $|JM| = |J^2||M/JM|$. More generally, we focus the attention to semi-Gorenstein-projective and $\infty$-torsionfree modules…
