Given a local Noetherian ring $(R, {\mathfrak m})$ of dimension $d>0$ and infinite residue field, we study the invariants $($dimension and multiplicity$)$ of the Sally module $S_J(I)$ of any ${\mathfrak m}$-primary ideal $I$ with respect to a minimal reduction $J$. As a by-product we obtain an estimate for the Hilbert coefficients of ${\mathfrak m}$ that generalizes a bound established by J. Elias and G. Valla in a local Cohen-Macaulay setting. We also find sharp estimates for the multiplicity of the special fiber ring ${\mathcal F}(I)$, which recover previous bounds established by C. Polini, W.V. Vasconcelos and the author in the local Cohen-Macaulay case. Great attention is also paid to Sally modules in local Buchsbaum rings.
The structure of Sally modules of $\fkm$-primary ideals $I$ in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring $(A, \m)$ satisfying the equality $\e_1(I)=\e_0(I)-\ell_A(A/I)+1$ is explored, where $\e_0(I)$ and $\e_1(I)$ denote the first two Hilbert coefficients of $I$.
We study the depth properties of the associated graded ring of an m-primary ideal I in terms of numerical data attached to the ideal I. We also find bounds on the Hilbert coefficients of I by means of the Sally module S_J(I) of I with respect to a minimal reduction J of I.
In this paper, we explore the structure of the normal Sally modules of rank one with respect to an $m$-primary ideal in a Nagata reduced local ring which is not necessary Cohen-Macaulay. As an application of this result, when the base ring is Cohen-Macaulay analytically unramified, the extremal bound on the first normal Hilbert coefficient leads to the Cohen-Macaulayness of the associated graded rings with respect to a normal filtration.
We introduce the concept of $j$-stretched ideals in a Noetherian local ring. This notion generalizes to arbitrary ideals the classical notion of stretched $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals of Sally and Rossi-Valla, as well as the concept of ideals of minimal and almost minimal $j$-multiplicity introduced by Polini-Xie. One of our main theorems states that, for a $j$-stretched ideal, the associated graded ring is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if two classical invariants of the ideal, the reduction number and the index of nilpotency, are equal. Our second main theorem, presenting numerical conditions w…
We study the relationship between the reduction number of a primary ideal of a local ring relative to one of its minimal reductions and the multiplicity of the corresponding Sally module. This paper is focused on three goals: (i) To develop a change of rings technique for the Sally module of an ideal to allow extension of results from Cohen-Macaulay rings to more general rings. (ii) To use the fiber of the Sally modules of almost complete intersection ideals to connect its structure to the Cohen-Macaulayness of the special fiber ring. (iii) To extend some of the results of (i) to two-dimension…
A complete structure theorem of Sally modules of $\fkm$-primary ideals $I$ in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring $(A, \m)$ satisfying the equality $\e_1(I)=\e_0(I)-\ell_A(A/I)+1$ is given, where $\e_0(I)$ and $\e_1(I)$ denote the first two Hilbert coefficients of $I$.
Given a finite module $M$ over a Noetherian local ring $(R, \m)$, we introduce the concept of $j$-stretched ideals on $M$. Thanks to a crucial specialization lemma, we show that this notion greatly generalizes (to arbitrary ideals, and with respect to modules) the classical definition of stretched $\m$-primary ideals of Sally and Rossi-Valla, as well as the notion of minimal and almost minimal $j$-multiplicity given recently by Polini-Xie. For $j$-stretched ideals $I$ on a Cohen-Macaulay module $M$, we show that ${\rm gr}_I(M)$ is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if two classical invariants of $I$, …
The first two Hilbert coefficients of a primary ideal play an important role in commutative algebra and in algebraic geometry. In this paper we give a complete algebraic structure of the Sally module of integrally closed ideals $I$ in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring $A$ satisfying the equality $\mathrm{e}_1(I)=\mathrm{e}_0(I)-\ell_A(A/I)+\ell_A(I^2/QI)+1, $ where $Q$ is a minimal reduction of $I$, and $\mathrm{e}_0(I)$ and $\mathrm{e}_1(I)$ denote the first two Hilbert coefficients of $I, $ respectively the multiplicity and the Chern number of $I$. This almost extremal value of $\mathrm{e}_1(I) $ …
In a local Cohen-Macaulay ring $(A, \mathrm{m})$, we study the Hilbert function of an $\mathrm{m}$-primary ideal $I$ whose reduction number is two. It is a continuous work of the papers of Huneke, Ooishi, Sally, and Goto-Nishida-Ozeki. With some conditions, we show the inequality $\mathrm{e}_1(I)\ge \mathrm{e}_0(I) - \ell_A (A/I) + \mathrm{e}_2(I)$ of the Hilbert coefficients, which is the converse inequality of Sally and Itoh. We also study relations between the Hilbert coefficients and the depth of the associated graded ring.
This paper purposes to characterize Noetherian local rings $(A, {\mathfrak m})$ of positive dimension such that the first Hilbert coefficients of ${\mathfrak m}$-primary ideals in $A$ range among only finitely many values. Examples are explored.
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a $d$-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local ring with infinite residue field. Let $I$ be an ideal of $R$ that has analytic spread $\ell(I)=d$, satisfies the $G_d$ condition, the weak Artin-Nagata property $AN_{d-2}^-$ and depth$(R/I)\geq\min\lbrace 1,\dim R/I \rbrace$. In this paper, we show that if $j_1(I) = λ(I/J) +λ[R/(J_{d-1} :_{R} I+(J_{d-2} :_{R}I+I) :_R, \mathfrak{m}^\infty)]+1$, then depth$(G(I))\geq d -1$ and $r_J(I)\leq 2$, where $J$ is a general minimal reduction of $I$. In addition, we extend the result by Sally who has studied the depth of associated graded ri…
We generalize a Briançon-Skoda type theorem first studied by Aberbach and Huneke. With some conditions on a regular local ring $(R,\m)$ containing a field, and an ideal $I$ of $R$ with analytic spread $\ell$ and a minimal reduction $J$, we prove that for all $w \geq -1$, $ \bar{I^{\ell+w}} \subseteq J^{w+1} \mathfrak{a} (I,J),$ where $\mathfrak{a}(I,J)$ is the coefficient ideal of $I$ relative to $J$, i.e. the largest ideal $\mathfrak{b}$ such that $I\mathfrak{b}=J\mathfrak{b}$. Previously, this result was known only for $\m$-primary ideals.
Let $\mathfrak{q}$ denote an $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal of a $d$-dimensional local ring $(A, \mathfrak{m}).$ Let $\underline{a} = a_1,\ldots,a_d \subset \mathfrak{q}$ be a system of parameters. Then there is the following inequality for the multiplicities $c \cdot e(\mathfrak{q};A) \leq e(\underline{a};A)$ where $c$ denotes the product of the initial degrees of $a_i$ in the form ring $G_A(\mathfrak{q}).$ The aim of the paper is a characterization of the equality as well as a description of the difference by various homological methods via Koszul homology. To this end we have to characterize …
Two formulas for the multiplicity of the fiber cone $F(I)=\oplus_{n=0}^{\infty} I^n/\m I^n$ of an $\m$-primary ideal of a $d$-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local ring $(R,\m)$ are derived in terms of the mixed multiplicity $e_{d-1}(\m | I),$ the multiplicity $e(I)$ and superficial elements. As a consequence, the Cohen-Macaulay property of $F(I)$ when $I$ has minimal mixed multiplicity or almost minimal mixed multiplicity is characterized in terms of reduction number of $I$ and lengths of certain ideals. We also characterize Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein property of fiber cones of $\m$-primary ide…
Let (R, m) be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring and I be an m-primary ideal. We introduce ideals of almost minimal mixed multiplicty which are analogues of ideals studied by J. Sally. The main theorem describes the Hilbert series of fiber cones of these ideals.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of the strong Rees property (SRP) for $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals of a Noetherian local ring and prove that any power of the maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ has its property if the associated graded ring $G$ of $\mathfrak{m}$ satisfies $\text{depth} \ G \ge 2$. As its application, we characterize two-dimensional excellent normal local domains so that $\mathfrak{m}$ is a $p_g$-ideal. Finally we ask what $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals have SRP and state a conjecture which characterizes the case when $\mathfrak{m}^n$ are the only ideals which have SRP.
The homological property of the associated graded ring of an ideal is an important problem in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. In this paper we explore the almost Cohen-Macaulayness of the associated graded ring of stretched $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals in the case where the reduction number attains almost minimal value in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring $(A,\mathfrak{m})$. As an application, we present complete descriptions of the associated graded ring of stretched $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals with small reduction number.
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a Noetherian local ring of dimension $d\geq 2$. We prove that if $e(\widehat{R}_{red})>1$, then the classical Lech's inequality can be improved uniformly for all $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals, that is, there exists $\varepsilon>0$ such that $e(I)\leq d!(e(R)-\varepsilon)\ell(R/I)$ for all $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals $I\subseteq R$. We also obtain partial results towards improvements of Lech's inequality when we fix the number of generators of $I$.
In this paper we explore the almost Cohen-Macaulayness of the associated graded ring of stretched $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals with small first Hilbert coefficient in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring $(A,\mathfrak{m})$. In particular, we explore the structure of stretched $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals satisfying the equality $\mathrm{e}_1(I)=\mathrm{e}_0(I)-\ell_A(A/I)+4$ where $\mathrm{e}_0(I)$ and $\mathrm{e}_1(I)$ denote the multiplicity and the first Hilbert coefficient respectively.
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring, $I$ an $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal of $R$ and $J$ its minimal reduction. We study the depths of $F(I)$ under certain depth assumptions on $G(I)$ and length condition on quotients of powers of $I$ and $J$, namely $\sum_{n\geq0}λ(\mathfrak{m}I^{n+1}/\mathfrak{m}JI^n)$ and $\sum_{n\geq0}λ(\mathfrak{m}I^{n+1} \cap J/\mathfrak{m}JI^n)$.
In this paper, we present an algorithm for computing the minimal reductions of $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals of Cohen--Macaulay local rings. Using this algorithm, we are able to compute the Hilbert--Samuel multiplicities and solve the membership problem for the integral closure of $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals.
Let $O$ be an order in a quadratic number field $K$ with ring of integers $D$, such that the conductor $\mathfrak F = f D$ is a prime ideal of $O$, where $f\in\mathbb Z$ is a prime. We give a complete description of the $\mathfrak F$-primary ideals of $O$. They form a lattice with a particular structure by layers; the first layer, which is the core of the lattice, consists of those $\mathfrak F$-primary ideals not contained in $\mathfrak F^2$. We get three different cases, according to whether the prime number $f$ is split, inert or ramified in $D$.
We explore the classical Lech's inequality relating the Hilbert--Samuel multiplicity and colength of an $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal in a Noetherian local ring $(R,\mathfrak{m})$. We prove optimal versions of Lech's inequality for sufficiently deep ideals in characteristic $p>0$, and we conjecture that they hold in all characteristics. Our main technical result shows that if $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ has characteristic $p>0$ and $\widehat{R}$ is reduced, equidimensional, and has an isolated singularity, then for any sufficiently deep $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal $I$, the colength and Hilbert--Kunz mu…
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with unity $(1\not=0)$ and let $\mathfrak{J}(R)$ be the set of all ideals of $R$. Let $ϕ:\mathfrak{J}(R)\rightarrow\mathfrak{J}(R)\cup\{\emptyset\}$ be a reduction function of ideals of $R$ and let $δ:\mathfrak{J}(R)\rightarrow\mathfrak{J}(R)$ be an expansion function of ideals of $R$. We recall that a proper ideal $I$ of $R$ is called a $ϕ$-$δ$-primary ideal of $R$ if whenever $a,b\in R$ and $ab\in I-ϕ(I)$, then $a\in I$ or $b\inδ(I)$. In this paper, we introduce a new class of ideals that is a generalization to the class of $ϕ$-$δ$-primary ideals. Let $S$ be a m…
This paper gives an upper bound of the second Hilbert coefficients ${\mathrm{e}}_2(I)$ of $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals $I$ in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring $(A,{\mathfrak{m}})$ in terms of the sectional genera of $I$.
Let $\mathfrak a$ be an ideal of a commutative Noetherian ring $R$ and $t$ be a non-negative integer. Let $M$ and $N$ be two finitely generated $R$-modules. In certain cases, we give some bounds under inclusion for the annihilators of $\operatorname{Ext}^t_R(M, N)$ and $\operatorname{H}^t_{\mathfrak a}(M)$ in terms of minimal primary decomposition of the zero submodule of $M$ which are independent of the choice of minimal primary decomposition. Then, by using those bounds, we compute the annihilators of local cohomology and Ext modules in certain cases.
Let $(R, \mathfrak m)$ be a one dimensional local Cohen-Macaulay ring. An $\mathfrak m$-primary ideal $I$ of $R$ is Elias if the types of $I$ and of $R/I$ are equal. Canonical and principal ideals are Elias, and Elias ideals are closed under inclusion. We give multiple characterizations of Elias ideals and concrete criteria to identify them. We connect Elias ideals to other well-studied definitions: Ulrich, $\mathfrak m$-full, integrally closed, trace ideals, etc. Applications are given regarding canonical ideals, conductors and the Auslander index.
Let $(A,\mathfrak{m})$ be an analytically unramified Cohen-Macaulay local ring and let $\mathfrak{a}$ be an $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal in $A$. If $I$ is an ideal in $A$ then let $I^*$ be the integral closure of $I$ in $A$. Let $G_{\mathfrak{a}}(A)^* = \bigoplus_{n\geq 0 }(\mathfrak{a}^n)^*/(\mathfrak{a}^{n+1})^*$ be the associated graded ring of the integral closure filtration of $\mathfrak{a}$. Itoh conjectured that if $e_3^{\mathfrak{a}^*}(A) = 0$ and $A$ is Gorenstein then $G_{\mathfrak{a}}(A)^* $ is Cohen-Macaulay. In this paper we prove an important case of Itoh's conjecture: we show th…
In this paper, we study the $F$-rationality of the Rees algebra and the extended Rees algebra of $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals in excellent local rings $(R, \mathfrak{m})$ of prime characteristic. We partially answer some conjectures and questions raised by N. Hara, K.-i. Watanabe and K.-i. Yoshida (J. Algebra, pp.153--190, vol 247, 2002).
Let $(A,\mathfrak{m})$ be an excellent normal domain of dimension two. We define an $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal $I$ to be a $p_g$-ideal if the Rees algebra $A[It]$ is a Cohen-Macaulay normal domain. When $A$ contains an algebraically closed field $k \cong A/\mathfrak{m}$ then Okuma, Watanabe and Yoshida proved that $A$ has $p_g$-ideals and furthermore product of two $p_g$-ideals is a $p_g$ ideal. In this article we show that if $A$ is an excellent normal domain of dimension two containing a field $k \cong A/\mathfrak{m}$ of characteristic zero then also $A$ has $p_g$-ideals. Furthermore produ…
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a quasi-unmixed local ring and $I$ an equimultiple ideal of $R$ of analytic spread $s$. In this paper, we introduce the equimultiple coefficient ideals. Fix $k\in \{1,...,s\}.$ The largest ideal $L$ containing $I$ such that $e_{i}(I_{\mathfrak{p}})=e_{i}(L_{\mathfrak{p}})$ for each $i \in \{1,...,k\}$ and each minimal prime $\mathfrak{p}$ of $I$ is called the $k$-th equimultiple coefficient ideal denoted by $I_{k}$. It is a generalization of the coefficient ideals firstly introduced by Shah \cite{S} for the case of $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals. We also see applicatio…
Let $(R,\mathfrak{M})$ be a two-dimensional regular local ring with algebraically closed residue field. Let $I$ be a simple complete $\mathfrak{M}$-primary ideal of $R$ and let $w$ denote its unique Rees valuation. Then the degree function coefficient $d(I,w)=1$. In this note a short proof of this result is given.
This paper purposes to characterize Noetherian local rings $(R, \mathfrak{m})$ such that the Chern numbers of certain $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals in $R$ bounded above or range among only finitely many values. Consequently, we characterize the Gorensteinness, Cohen-Macaulayness, generalized Cohen-Macaulayness of local rings in terms of the behavior of its Chern numbers.
Let I be a finitely supported complete m-primary ideal of a regular local ring (R, m). We consider singularities of the normalization of the blow-up Proj R[It] of I. A theorem of Lipman implies that the ideal I has a unique factorization as a star-product of special star-simple complete ideals with possibly negative exponents for some of the factors. If the normalization of the projective model Proj R[It] is regular, we prove that it is the regular model obtained by blowing up the finite set of base points of I. Extending work of Lipman and Huneke-Sally in dimension 2, we prove that every loca…
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a two-dimensional regular local ring with infinite residue class field. Then the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R} (I)= \bigoplus_{n \ge 0}I^n$ of $I$ is an almost Gorenstein graded ring in the sense of Goto-Takahashi-Taniguchi for every $\mathfrak{m}$-primary integrally closed ideal $I$ in $R$.
Given a local Cohen-Macaulay ring $(R, {\mathfrak m})$, we study the interplay between the integral closedness -- or even the normality -- of an ${\mathfrak m}$-primary $R$-ideal $I$ and conditions on the Hilbert coefficients of $I$. We relate these properties to the depth of the associated graded ring of $I$.
Let $S$ be a polynomial ring over an algebraic closed field $k$ and $ \mathfrak p =(x,y,z,w) $ a homogeneous height four prime ideal. We give a finite characterization of the degree two component of ideals primary to $\mathfrak p$, with multiplicity $e \leq 3$. We use this result to give a tight bound on the projective dimension of almost complete intersections generated by five quadrics with $e \leq 3$.
Let $(R, {\mathfrak m})$ be a Noetherian local ring and let $I$ be an ${\mathfrak m}$-primary ideal. In this paper we give sharp bounds on the multiplicity of the special fiber ring ${\mathcal F}$ of $I$ in terms of other well-known invariants of $I$. A special attention is then paid in studying when equality holds in these bounds, with a particular interest in the unmixedness or, better, the Cohen-Macaulayness of ${\mathcal F}$.
Let $(R, \mathfrak m)$ be an unmixed Noetherian local ring, Q a parameter ideal and $K$ an $\mathfrak m$-primary ideal of $R$ containing $Q$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for $R$ to be Cohen-Macaulay in terms of $g_0(Q)$ and $g_1(Q)$, the Hilbert coefficients of $Q$ with respect to $K$. As a consequence, we obtain a result of Ghezzi et al. which settles the negativity conjecture of W. V. Vasconcelos [15] in unmixed local rings.
Let $(A,\mathfrak{m})$ be an analytically unramified formally equidimensional Noetherian local ring with $\ depth \ A \geq 2$. Let $I$ be an $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal and set $I^*$ to be the integral closure of $I$. Set $G^*(I) = \bigoplus_{n\geq 0} (I^n)^*/(I^{n+1})^*$ be the associated graded ring of the integral closure filtration of $I$. We prove that $\ depth \ G^*(I^n) \geq 2$ for all $n \gg 0$. As an application we prove that if $A$ is also an excellent normal domain containing an algebraically closed field isomorphic to $A/\m$ then there exists $s_0$ such that for all $s \geq s_0$ a…
We answer affirmatively a question of Srinivas--Trivedi: in a Noetherian local ring $(R,\mathfrak{m})$, if $I=(f_1,\dots,f_r)$ is an ideal generated by a filter-regular sequence and $J$ is an ideal such that $I+J$ is $\mathfrak{m}$-primary, then there exists $N>0$ such that for any $\varepsilon_1,\dots,\varepsilon_r \in \mathfrak{m}^N$, we have an equality of Hilbert functions: $H(J, R/(f_1,\dots,f_r))(n)=H(J, R/(f_1+\varepsilon_1,\dots, f_r+\varepsilon_r))(n)$ for all $n\geq 0$. We also prove that the dimension of the non Cohen--Macaulay locus does not increase under small perturbations.
Let $(A,\mathfrak{m})$ be an excellent normal domain of dimension two containing a field $k \cong A/\mathfrak{m}$. An $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal $I$ to be a $p_g$-ideal if the Rees algebra $A[It]$ is a Cohen-Macaulay normal domain. If $k$ is algebraically closed then Okuma, Watanabe and Yoshida proved that $A$ has $p_g$-ideals and furthermore product of two $p_g$-ideals is a $p_g$ ideal. In a previous paper we showed that if $k$ has characteristic zero then $A$ has $p_g$-ideals. In this paper we prove that if $k$ is perfect field of positive characteristic then also $A$ has $p_g$ ideals.
Let $(A,\mathfrak{m}_A,k)$ be a local noetherian ring and $I$ an $\mathfrak{m}_A$-primary ideal. The asymptotic Samuel function (with respect to $I$) $\bar{v}_I$ $:$ $A\longrightarrow \mathbb{R}\cup {+\infty}$ is defined by $\bar{v}_I(x)=lim_{k \to \+infty}\frac{ord_I(x^k}{k}$, $\forall x \in A$. Similary, one defines for another ideal $J$, $\bar{v}_I(J)$ as the minimum of $\bar{v}_I(x)$ as $x$ varies in $J$. Of special interest is the rational number $\bar{v}_I(\mathfrak{m}_A)$. We study the behavior of the Asymptotic Samuel Function (with respect to $I$) when passing to hyperplanes sections …
Let $\mathfrak{q}$ denote an ideal of a local ring $(A,\mathfrak{m})$. For a system of elements $\underline{a} = a_1,\ldots,a_t$ such that $a_i \in \mathfrak{q}^{c_i}, i = 1, \ldots,t,$ and $n \in \mathbb{Z}$ we investigate a subcomplex resp. a factor complex of the Čech complex $\check{C}_{\underline{a}} \otimes_A M$ for a finitely generated $A$-module $M$. We start with the inspection of these cohomology modules that approximate in a certain sense the local cohomology modules $H^i_{\underline{a}}(M)$ for all $i \in \mathbb{N}$. In the case of an $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal $\underline{a} A$…
In 1960, D.G. Northcott proved that if $e_0(I)$ and $e_1(I)$ denote zeroth and first Hilbert-Samuel coefficients of an $\mathfrak m$-primary ideal $I$ in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring $(R,\mathfrak m)$, then $e_0(I)-e_1(I)\le \ell (R/I)$. In this article, we study an analogue of this inequality for Buchsbaum-Rim coefficients. We prove that if $(R,\mathfrak m)$ is a two dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local ring and $M$ is a finitely generated $R$-module contained in a free module $F$ with finite co-length, then $br_0(M)-br_1(M)\le \ell (F/M)$, where $br_0(M)$ and $br_1(M$) denote zeroth and first Buc…
We answer a question of Celikbas, Dao, and Takahashi by establishing the following characterization of Gorenstein rings: a commutative noetherian local ring $(R,\mathfrak m)$ is Gorenstein if and only if it admits an integrally closed $\mathfrak m$-primary ideal of finite Gorenstein dimension. This is accomplished through a detailed study of certain test complexes. Along the way we construct such a test complex that detect finiteness of Gorenstein dimension, but not that of projective dimension.
The first purpose of this paper is to point out a curious result announced by Macaulay on the Hilbert function of a differential module in his famous book The Algebraic Theory of Modular Systems published in 1916. Indeed, on page 78/79 of this book, Macaulay is saying the following: " A polynomial ideal $\mathfrak{a} \subset k[χ\_1$,..., $χ\_n]=k[χ]$ is of the {\it principal class} and thus {\it unmixed} if it has rank $r$ and is generated by $r$ polynomials. Having in mind this definition, a primary ideal $\mathfrak{q}$ with associated prime ideal $\mathfrak{p} = rad(\mathfrak{q})$ is such th…
Let $R=\mathbf{C}[ξ_1,ξ_2,\ldots]$ be the infinite variable polynomial ring, equipped with the natural action of the infinite symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}$. We classify the $\mathfrak{S}$-primes of $R$, determine the containments among these ideals, and describe the equivariant spectrum of $R$. We emphasize that $\mathfrak{S}$-prime ideals need not be radical, which is a primary source of difficulty. Our results yield a classification of $\mathfrak{S}$-ideals of $R$ up to copotency. Our work is motivated by the interest and applications of $\mathfrak{S}$-ideals seen in recent years.
Let $I$ be a regular $\mathfrak m$-primary ideal in $(R,\mathfrak m,k)$. Then the Ratliff-Rush ideal associated to $I$ is denoted by $\bar I$ and is defined as the largest ideal containing $I$ with the same Hilbert polynomial as $I$. In this paper we present a method to compute Ratliff-Rush ideals for a certain class of monomial ideals in the rings $k[x,y]$ and $k[[x,y]]$. We find an upper bound for the Ratliff-Rush reduction number for an ideal in this class. Moreover, we establish some new characterizations of when all powers of $I$ are Ratliff-Rush.
