Let $(R, {\mathfrak m})$ be a Noetherian local ring and let $I$ be an ${\mathfrak m}$-primary ideal. In this paper we give sharp bounds on the multiplicity of the special fiber ring ${\mathcal F}$ of $I$ in terms of other well-known invariants of $I$. A special attention is then paid in studying when equality holds in these bounds, with a particular interest in the unmixedness or, better, the Cohen-Macaulayness of ${\mathcal F}$.
In characteristic zero, the residual order constitutes, after the local multiplicity, the second key invariant for the resolution of singularities. It is defined as the order of the coefficient ideal in a local hypersurface of maximal contact, minus the exceptional multiplicities. It does not increase under blowup in permissible centers as long as the local multiplicity remains constant. In positive characteristic, however, the residual order (defined now as the maximum over all smooth local hypersurfaces) may increase under blowup. In the article we analyze in detail the circumstances when th…
It is shown that the Orlik-Terao algebra is graded isomorphic to the special fiber of the ideal $I$ generated by the $(n-1)$-fold products of the members of a central arrangement of size $n$. This momentum is carried over to the Rees algebra (blowup) of $I$ and it is shown that this algebra is of fiber-type and Cohen-Macaulay. It follows by a result of Simis-Vasconcelos that the special fiber of $I$ is Cohen-Macaulay, thus giving another proof of a result of Proudfoot-Speyer about the Cohen-Macauleyness of the Orlik-Terao algebra.
We investigate the Rees algebra and the toric ring of the squarefree monomial ideal associated to the three-dimensional Ferrers diagram. Under the projection property condition, we describe explicitly the presentation ideals of the Rees algebra and the toric ring. We show that the toric ring is a Koszul Cohen--Macaulay normal domain, while the Rees algebra is Koszul and the defining ideal is of fiber type.
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a Noetherian local ring of dimension $d>0$ with infinite residue field. Let $M$ be a finitely generated proper $R$-submodule of a free $R$-module $F$ with $\ell (F/M) < \infty$ and having rank $r$. In this article, we study the fiber multiplicity $f_0(M)$ of the module $M$. We prove that if $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ is a two dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local ring, then $f_0(M)\le br_1(M)-br_0(M)+\ell (F/M)+μ(M)-r$, where $br_i(M)$ denotes the $i^{th}$ Buchsbaum-Rim coefficient of $M$.
We determine the equations of the blowup of $\mathbb{P}^n$ along a $d$-fold rational normal scroll $S$, and we prove that the Rees ring and special fiber ring of $S \subseteq \mathbb{P}^n$ are Koszul algebras.
We find the defining equations of Rees rings of linearly presented height three Gorenstein ideals. To prove our main theorem we use local cohomology techniques to bound the maximum generator degree of the torsion submodule of symmetric powers in order to conclude that the defining equations of the Rees algebra and the special fiber ring have the same image in the symmetric algebra. We show that this image is the unmixed part of the ideal generated by the maximal minors of a matrix of linear forms which is annihilated by a vector of indeterminates, and otherwise has maximal possible grade. An i…
Let $R$ be a polynomial ring and $I \subset R$ be a perfect ideal of height two minimally generated by forms of the same degree. We provide a formula for the multiplicity of the saturated special fiber ring of $I$. Interestingly, this formula is equal to an elementary symmetric polynomial in terms of the degrees of the syzygies of $I$. Applying ideas introduced in arXiv:1805.05180, we obtain the value of the j-multiplicity of $I$ and an effective method for determining the degree and birationality of rational maps defined by homogeneous generators of $I$.
Let $R$ be a polynomial ring over a field and $I \subset R$ be a Gorenstein ideal of height three that is minimally generated by homogeneous polynomials of the same degree. We compute the multiplicity of the saturated special fiber ring of $I$. The obtained formula depends only on the number of variables of $R$, the minimal number of generators of $I$, and the degree of the syzygies of $I$. Applying results from arXiv:1805.05180, we get a formula for the $j$-multiplicity of $I$ and an effective method to study a rational map determined by a minimal set of generators of $I$.
We show that Serre's Intersection Multiplicity Conjecture holds for a formal power series ring A over a complete, two-dimensional regular local ring R. From this, we deduce the corresponding result for the local rings of any scheme X which is a smooth extension of a regular, two-dimensional base Y. We also investigate the connection between intersection multiplicity and transversality in the unramified setting via a local analysis on the blowup.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 0$. We show that if $X\subseteq\mathbb{P}^n_k$ is an equidimensional subscheme with Hilbert--Kunz multiplicity less than $λ$ at all points $x\in X$, then for a general hyperplane $H\subseteq\mathbb{P}^n_k$, the Hilbert--Kunz multiplicity of $X\cap H$ is less than $λ$ at all points $x\in X\cap H$. This answers a conjecture and generalizes a result of Carvajal-Rojas, Schwede and Tucker, whose conclusion is the same as ours when $X\subseteq\mathbb{P}^n_k$ is normal. In the process, we substantially generalize certain uniform estimate…

Let $(R, \mathfrak m)$ be a Noetherian local ring and $I$ a $\mathfrak m$-primary ideal. In this paper, we study an inequality involving the number of generators, the Loewy length and the multiplicity of $I$. There is strong evidence that the inequality holds for all integrally closed ideals of finite colength if and only if $R$ has sufficiently nice singularities. We verify the inequality for regular local rings in all dimensions, for rational singularity in dimension $2$, and cDV singularities in dimension $3$. In addition, we can classify when the inequality always hold for a Cohen-Macaulay…
A commutative ring $R$ is stable provided every ideal of $R$ containing a nonzerodivisor is projective as a module over its ring of endomorphisms. The class of stable rings includes the one-dimensional local Cohen-Macaulay rings of multiplicity at most $2$, as well as certain rings of higher multiplicity, necessarily analytically ramified. The former are important in the study of modules over Gorenstein rings, while the latter arise in a natural way from generic formal fibers and derivations. We characterize one-dimensional stable local rings in several ways. The characterizations involve the …
