Let $R$ be a polynomial ring over a field and $I \subset R$ be a Gorenstein ideal of height three that is minimally generated by homogeneous polynomials of the same degree. We compute the multiplicity of the saturated special fiber ring of $I$. The obtained formula depends only on the number of variables of $R$, the minimal number of generators of $I$, and the degree of the syzygies of $I$. Applying results from arXiv:1805.05180, we get a formula for the $j$-multiplicity of $I$ and an effective method to study a rational map determined by a minimal set of generators of $I$.
We prove upper bounds for the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity of standard graded Gorenstein algebras. The main tool that we use is Boij-Söderberg theory to obtain a decomposition of the Betti table of a Gorenstein algebra as the sum of rational multiples of symmetrized pure tables. Our bound agrees with the one in the quasi-pure case obtained by Srinivasan [J. Algebra, vol.~208, no.~2, (1998)].
The Multiplicity Conjecture is a deep problem relating the multiplicity (or degree) of a Cohen-Macaulay standard graded algebra with certain extremal graded Betti numbers in its minimal free resolution. In the case of level algebras of codimension three, Zanello has proposed a stronger conjecture. We prove this conjecture for the case of codimension three graded Gorenstein algebras.
Let $R$ be a local, Gorenstein ring with algebraically closed residue field $k$ of characteristic 0 and let $P_R(z):=\sum_{p=0}^{\infty}\dim_k(\tor_p^R(k,k))z^p$ be its Poincaré series. We compute $P_R$ when $R$ belongs to a particular class defined in the introduction, proving its rationality. As a by--product we prove the rationality of $P_R$ for all local, Gorenstein rings of multiplicity at most 10.
Let $R$ be a polynomial ring and $I \subset R$ be a perfect ideal of height two minimally generated by forms of the same degree. We provide a formula for the multiplicity of the saturated special fiber ring of $I$. Interestingly, this formula is equal to an elementary symmetric polynomial in terms of the degrees of the syzygies of $I$. Applying ideas introduced in arXiv:1805.05180, we obtain the value of the j-multiplicity of $I$ and an effective method for determining the degree and birationality of rational maps defined by homogeneous generators of $I$.
Let $(A, \mathfrak{m})$ be a Noetherian local ring and $\mathfrak{F}=(I_{n})_{n\geq 0}$ a filtration. In this paper, we study the Gorenstein properties of the fiber cone $F(\mathfrak{F})$, where $\mathfrak{F}$ is a Hilbert filtration. Suppose that $F(\mathfrak{F})$ and $G(\mathfrak{F})$ are Cohen-Macaulay. If in addition, the associated graded ring $G(\mathfrak{F})$ is Gorenstein; similarly to the $I$-adic case, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition, in terms of lengths and minimal number of generators of ideals, for Gorensteiness of the fiber cone. Moreover, we find a description of …
In this paper we investigate the question of when the determinantal ring $R$ over a field $k$ is an almost Gorenstein local/graded ring in the sense of Goto, Takahashi, and the author. As a consequence of the main result, we see that if $R$ is a non-Gorenstein almost Gorenstein local/graded ring, then the ring $R$ has a minimal multiplicity.
We construct a complex of free-modules over a Gorenstein ring R of dimension five, for which the Euler characteristic and Dutta multiplicity are different. This complex is the resolution of an R-module of finite length and finite projective dimension. As a consequence, the ring R has a nonzero Todd class tau_3(R) and a bounded free complex whose local Chern character does not vanish on this class. In the course of our work, we construct a module N of finite length and finite projective dimension over the hypersurface A=K[u,v,w,x,y,z]/(ux+vy+wz), such that the Serre intersection multiplicity of…
Asymptotic properties of saturated powers of modules over a local domain R are studied. Under mild conditions, it is shown that the limit as k goes to infinity of the quotient of the saturation of the k-th power of a module E by the k-th power of E, when divided by k^{d+e-1}, exists. Here d is the dimension of R and e is the rank of E. We deduce that under these assumptions, the epsilon multiplicity of E, defined by Ulrich and Validashti as a limsup, actually exists as a limit.
This paper gives a necessary and sufficient condition for Gorensteinness in Rees algebras of the $d$-th power of parameter ideals in certain Noetherian local rings of dimension $d\ge 2$. The main result of this paper produces many Gorenstein Rees algebras over non-Cohen-Macaulay local rings. For example, the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(\mathfrak{q}^d)=\oplus_{i\ge 0}\mathfrak{q}^{di}$ is Gorenstein for every parameter ideal $\mathfrak{q}$ that is a reduction of the maximal ideal in a $d$-dimensional Buchsbaum local ring of depth 1 and multiplicity 2.
In this paper we show a partial answer the a question of C. Huneke and G. Leuschke (2003): Let R be a standard graded Cohen-Macaulay ring of graded countable Cohen-Macaulay representation type, and assume that R has an isolated singularity. Is R then necessarily of graded finite Cohen-Macaulay representation type? In particular, this question has an affirmative answer for standard graded non-Gorenstein rings as well as for standard graded Gorenstein rings of minimal multiplicity. Along the way, we obtain a partial classification of graded Cohen-Macaulay rings of graded countable Cohen-Macaulay…
Let $ R $ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring. We prove that the $ n $th syzygy module of a maximal Cohen-Macaulay $ R $-module cannot have a semidualizing direct summand for every $ n \ge 1 $. In particular, it follows that $ R $ is Gorenstein if and only if some syzygy of a canonical module of $ R $ has a non-zero free direct summand. We also give a number of necessary and sufficient conditions for a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of minimal multiplicity to be regular or Gorenstein. These criteria are based on vanishing of certain Exts or Tors involving syzygy modules of the residue field.
Given a one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local ring $(R,\mathfrak{m},k)$, we prove that it is almost Gorenstein if and only if $\mathfrak{m}$ is a canonical module of the ring $\mathfrak{m}:\mathfrak{m}$. Then, we generalize this result by introducing the notions of almost canonical ideal and gAGL ring and by proving that $R$ is gAGL if and only if $\mathfrak{m}$ is an almost canonical ideal of $\mathfrak{m}:\mathfrak{m}$. We use this fact to characterize when the ring $\mathfrak{m}:\mathfrak{m}$ is almost Gorenstein, provided that $R$ has minimal multiplicity. This is a generalization of a resu…
We study one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay rings whose trace ideal of the canonical module is as small as possible. In this paper we call such rings far-flung Gorenstein rings. We investigate far-flung Gorenstein rings in relation with the endomorphism algebras of the maximal ideals and numerical semigroup rings. We show that the solution of the Rohrbach problem in additive number theory provides an upper bound for the multiplicity of far-flung Gorenstein numerical semigroup rings. Reflexive modules over far-flung Gorenstein rings are also studied.
Let $(A,{\mathfrak m})$ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring and let $I$ be an ideal of $A$. We prove that the Rees algebra ${\mathcal R}(I)$ is an almost Gorenstein ring in the following cases: (1) $(A,{\mathfrak m})$ is a two-dimensional excellent Gorenstein normal domain over an algebraically closed field $K \cong A/{\mathfrak m}$ and $I$ is a $p_g$-ideal; (2) $(A,{\mathfrak m})$ is a two-dimensional almost Gorenstein local ring having minimal multiplicity and $I={\mathfrak m}^{\ell}$ for all $\ell \ge 1$; (3) $(A,{\mathfrak m})$ is a regular local ring of dimension $d \ge 2$ and $I={\mathfrak m}…
We give conjectures on the possible graded Betti numbers of Cohen-Macaulay modules up to multiplication by positive rational numbers. The idea is that the Betti diagrams should be non-negative linear combinations of pure diagrams. The conjectures are verified in the cases where the structure of resolutions are known, i.e., for modules of codimension two, for Gorenstein algebras of codimension three and for complete intersections. The motivation for the conjectures comes from the Multiplicity conjecture of Herzog, Huneke and Srinivasan.
Let R be a local Cohen-Macaulay ring with canonical module ω_R. We investigate the following question of Huneke: If the sequence of Betti numbers \{β_i^R(ω_R)\} has polynomial growth, must R be Gorenstein? This question is well-understood when R has minimal multiplicity. We investigate this question for a more general class of rings which we say are homologically of minimal multiplicity. We provide several characterizations of the rings in this class and establish a general ascent and descent result.
The Auslander-Reiten conjecture is a notorious open problem about the vanishing of Ext modules. In a Cohen-Macaulay complete local ring $R$ with a parameter ideal $Q$, the Auslander-Reiten conjecture holds for $R$ if and only if it holds for the residue ring $R/Q$. In the former part of this paper, we study the Auslander-Reiten conjecture for the ring $R/Q^\ell$ in connection with that for $R$, and prove the equivalence of them for the case where $R$ is Gorenstein and $\ell\le \dim R$. In the latter part, we generalize the result of the minimal multiplicity by J. Sally. Due to these two of our…
Let $R$ be a polynomial ring over a field. We prove an upper bound for the multiplicity of $R/I$ when $I$ is a homogeneous ideal of the form $I=J+(F)$, where $J$ is a Cohen-Macaulay ideal and $F\notin J$. The bound is given in terms of two invariants of $R/J$ and the degree of $F$. We show that ideals achieving this upper bound have high depth, and provide a purely numerical criterion for the Cohen-Macaulay property. Applications to quasi-Gorenstein rings and almost complete intersections are given.
We consider the notion of mixed multiplicities for multigraded modules by using Hilbert series, and this is later applied to study the projective degrees of rational maps. We use a general framework to determine the projective degrees of a rational map via a computation of the multiplicity of the saturated special fiber ring. As specific applications, we provide explicit formulas for all the projective degrees of rational maps determined by perfect ideals of height two or by Gorenstein ideals of height three.
Lower bounds on Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity are known for several types of commutative noetherian local rings, and rings with multiplicities which achieve these lower bounds are said to have minimal multiplicity. The first part of this paper gives characterizations of rings of minimal multiplicity in terms of the Ext-algebra of the ring; in particular, we show that minimal multiplicity can be detected via an Ext-algebra which is Gorenstein or Koszul AS-regular. The second part of this paper characterizes rings of minimal multiplicity via a numerical homological invariant introduced by J. Herzo…
Two formulas for the multiplicity of the fiber cone $F(I)=\oplus_{n=0}^{\infty} I^n/\m I^n$ of an $\m$-primary ideal of a $d$-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local ring $(R,\m)$ are derived in terms of the mixed multiplicity $e_{d-1}(\m | I),$ the multiplicity $e(I)$ and superficial elements. As a consequence, the Cohen-Macaulay property of $F(I)$ when $I$ has minimal mixed multiplicity or almost minimal mixed multiplicity is characterized in terms of reduction number of $I$ and lengths of certain ideals. We also characterize Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein property of fiber cones of $\m$-primary ide…
The multiplicity conjecture of Herzog, Huneke, and Srinivasan is verified for the face rings of the following classes of simplicial complexes: matroid complexes, complexes of dimension one and two, and Gorenstein complexes of dimension at most four. The lower bound part of this conjecture is also established for the face rings of all doubly Cohen-Macaulay complexes whose 1-skeleton's connectivity does not exceed the codimension plus one as well as for all (d-1)-dimensional d-Cohen-Macaulay complexes. The main ingredient of the proofs is a new interpretation of the minimal shifts in the resolut…
We classify all convex polyomino whose coordinate rings are Gorenstein. We also compute the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the coordinate ring of any stack polyomino in terms of the smallest interval which contains its vertices. We give a recursive formula for computing the multiplicity of a stack polyomino.
Let $ R $ be a $ d $-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay (CM) local ring of minimal multiplicity. Set $ S := R/({\bf f}) $, where $ {\bf f} := f_1,\ldots,f_c $ is an $ R $-regular sequence. Suppose $ M $ and $ N $ are maximal CM $ S $-modules. It is shown that if $ \mathrm{Ext}_S^i(M,N) = 0 $ for some $ (d+c+1) $ consecutive values of $ i \geqslant 2 $, then $ \mathrm{Ext}_S^i(M,N) = 0 $ for all $ i \geqslant 1 $. Moreover, if this holds true, then either $ \mathrm{projdim}_R(M) $ or $ \mathrm{injdim}_R(N) $ is finite. In addition, a counterpart of this result for Tor-modules is provided. Furthermore, …
Let H = <n_1,...,n_e> be a numerical semigroup generated by e elements. Let k[H]= k[x_1, .... , x_e]/I_H = S/I_H be the semigroup ring of H over k. We define inverse polynomial J_{H,h} for h in H and express the defining ideal of I_H using Ann_S (J_{H,h}). In particular, if k[H] is Gorenstein the defining ideal of I_H + (t^h) is Ann_S (J_{H, F(H)+h}), where F(H) is the Frobenius number of H ( = a(k[H]), the a -invariant of k[H]). We apply this to (1) evaluate number of generators of I_H, (2) characterize if k[H] is almost Gorenstein (H is almost symmetric), (3) characterize symmetric semigroup…
We describe prime ideals of height 2 minimally generated by 3 elements in a Gorenstein, Nagata local ring of Krull dimension 3 and multiplicity at most 3. This subject is related to a conjecture of Y. Shimoda and to a long-standing problem of J. Sally.

The purpose of this paper is to introduce new invariants of Cohen-Macaulay local rings. Our focus is the class of Cohen-Macaulay local rings that admit a canonical ideal. Attached to each such ring R with a canonical ideal C, there are integers--the type of R, the reduction number of C--that provide valuable metrics to express the deviation of R from being a Gorenstein ring. We enlarge this list with other integers--the roots of R and several canonical degrees. The latter are multiplicity based functions of the Rees algebra of C.
Let R be a commutative noetherian ring. Lindo and Pande have recently posed the question asking when every ideal of R is isomorphic to some trace ideal of R. This paper studies this question and gives several answers. In particular, a complete answer is given in the case where R is local: it is proved in this paper that every ideal of R is isomorphic to a trace ideal if and only if R is an artinian Gorenstein ring, or a 1-dimensional hypersurface with multiplicity at most 2, or a unique factorization domain.
In a previous paper we exhibited the somewhat surprising property that most direct links of prime ideals in Gorenstein rings are equimultiple ideals with reduction number $1$. This led to the construction of large families of Cohen--Macaulay Rees algebras. The first goal of this paper is to extend this result to arbitrary Cohen--Macaulay rings. The means of the proof are changed since one cannot depend so heavily on linkage theory. We then study the structure of the Rees algebra of these links, more specifically we describe their canonical module in sufficient detail to be able to characterize…
A commutative ring $R$ is stable provided every ideal of $R$ containing a nonzerodivisor is projective as a module over its ring of endomorphisms. The class of stable rings includes the one-dimensional local Cohen-Macaulay rings of multiplicity at most $2$, as well as certain rings of higher multiplicity, necessarily analytically ramified. The former are important in the study of modules over Gorenstein rings, while the latter arise in a natural way from generic formal fibers and derivations. We characterize one-dimensional stable local rings in several ways. The characterizations involve the …
The aim of this survey is to discuss invariants of Cohen-Macaulay local rings that admit a canonical module. We give a uniform presentation of three degrees arising from common roots. Finally we experiment with ways to extend one of th…
Each partition $λ= (λ_1, λ_2, ..., λ_n)$ determines a so-called Ferrers tableau or, equivalently, a Ferrers bipartite graph. Its edge ideal, dubbed Ferrers ideal, is a squarefree monomial ideal that is generated by quadrics. We show that such an ideal has a 2-linear minimal free resolution, i.e. it defines a small subscheme. In fact, we prove that this property characterizes Ferrers graphs among bipartite graphs. Furthermore, using a method of Bayer and Sturmfels, we provide an explicit description of the maps in its minimal free resolution: This is obtained by associating a suitable polyhedra…
