Given a one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local ring $(R,\mathfrak{m},k)$, we prove that it is almost Gorenstein if and only if $\mathfrak{m}$ is a canonical module of the ring $\mathfrak{m}:\mathfrak{m}$. Then, we generalize this result by introducing the notions of almost canonical ideal and gAGL ring and by proving that $R$ is gAGL if and only if $\mathfrak{m}$ is an almost canonical ideal of $\mathfrak{m}:\mathfrak{m}$. We use this fact to characterize when the ring $\mathfrak{m}:\mathfrak{m}$ is almost Gorenstein, provided that $R$ has minimal multiplicity. This is a generalization of a result proved by Chau, Goto, Kumashiro, and Matsuoka in the case in which $\mathfrak{m}:\mathfrak{m}$ is local and its residue field is isomorphic to $k$.
Let $(A,{\mathfrak m})$ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring and let $I$ be an ideal of $A$. We prove that the Rees algebra ${\mathcal R}(I)$ is an almost Gorenstein ring in the following cases: (1) $(A,{\mathfrak m})$ is a two-dimensional excellent Gorenstein normal domain over an algebraically closed field $K \cong A/{\mathfrak m}$ and $I$ is a $p_g$-ideal; (2) $(A,{\mathfrak m})$ is a two-dimensional almost Gorenstein local ring having minimal multiplicity and $I={\mathfrak m}^{\ell}$ for all $\ell \ge 1$; (3) $(A,{\mathfrak m})$ is a regular local ring of dimension $d \ge 2$ and $I={\mathfrak m}…
Let $R$ be a Gorenstein local ring with maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ satisfying $\mathfrak{m}^3=0\ne\mathfrak{m}^2$. Set $k=R/\mathfrak{m}$ and $e=\text{rank}_{k}(\mathfrak{m}/\mathfrak{m}^2)$. If $e>2$ and $M$, $N$ are finitely generated $R$-modules, we show that the formal power series $\sum_{i=0}^\infty\text{rank}_{k}\left(\text{Ext}^i_R(M,N)\otimes_R k \right)t^i$ and $\sum_{i=0}^\infty\text{rank}_{k}\left(\text{Tor}_i^R(M,N)\otimes_R k \right)t^i$ are rational, with denominator $1-et+t^2$.
We describe the graded characters and Hilbert functions of certain graded artinian Gorenstein quotients of the polynomial ring which are also representations of the symmetric group. Specifically, we look at those algebras whose socles are trivial representations and whose principal apolar submodules are generated by the sum of the orbit of a power of a linear form.
Quasi-socle ideals, that is the ideals $I$ of the form $I= Q : \mathfrak{m}^q$ in a Noetherian local ring $(A, \mathfrak{m})$ with the Gorenstein tangent cone $\mathrm{G}(\mathfrak{m}) = \bigoplus_{n \geq 0}{\mathfrak{m}}^n/{\mathfrak{m}}^{n+1}$ are explored, where $q \geq 1$ is an integer and $Q$ is a parameter ideal of $A$ generated by monomials of a system $x_1, x_2, ..., x_d$ of elements in $A$ such that $(x_1, x_2, ..., x_d)$ is a reduction of $\mathfrak{m}$. The questions of when $I$ is integral over $Q$ and of when the graded rings $\mathrm{G}(I) = \bigoplus_{n \geq 0}I^n/I^{n+1}$ and $…
This paper gives a necessary and sufficient condition for Gorensteinness in Rees algebras of the $d$-th power of parameter ideals in certain Noetherian local rings of dimension $d\ge 2$. The main result of this paper produces many Gorenstein Rees algebras over non-Cohen-Macaulay local rings. For example, the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(\mathfrak{q}^d)=\oplus_{i\ge 0}\mathfrak{q}^{di}$ is Gorenstein for every parameter ideal $\mathfrak{q}$ that is a reduction of the maximal ideal in a $d$-dimensional Buchsbaum local ring of depth 1 and multiplicity 2.
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a commutative Noetherian local ring which contains a regular sequence $ \underline{x} = x_1,\ldots,x_d \in \mathfrak{m} \smallsetminus \mathfrak{m}^2 $ such that $ \mathfrak{m}^3 \subseteq (\underline{x}) $. Let $ M $ be a finite $ R $-module with maximal complexity or curvature, e.g., $ M $ can be a nonzero direct summand of some syzygy module of the residue field $ R/\mathfrak{m} $. It is shown that the following are equivalent: (1) $R$ is Gorenstein, (2) $\mathrm{Ext}_R^{\gg 0}(M,R)=0$, and (3) $\mathrm{Tor}_{\gg 0}^R(M,ω) = 0$, where $ω$ denotes a canonical module…
Given positive integers e and s we consider Gorenstein Artinian local rings R of embedding dimension e whose maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ satisfies $\mathfrak{m}^s\ne 0=\mathfrak{m}^{s+1}$. We say that R is a compressed Gorenstein local ring when it has maximal length among such rings. It is known that generic Gorenstein Artinian algebras are compressed. If $s\ne 3$, we prove that the Poincare series of all finitely generated modules over a compressed Gorenstein local ring are rational, sharing a common denominator. A formula for the denominator is given. When s is even this formula depends on…
To every Gorenstein algebra $A$ of finite vector space dimension greater than 1 over a field $\FF$ of characteristic zero, and a linear projection $π$ on its maximal ideal ${\mathfrak m}$ with range equal to the annihilator $\Ann({\mathfrak m})$ of ${\mathfrak m}$, one can associate a certain algebraic hypersurface $S_π\subset{\mathfrak m}$, which is the graph of a polynomial map $P_π:\kerπ\ra\Ann({\mathfrak m})\simeq\FF$. Recently, in {\rm\cite{FIKK}}, {\rm\cite{FK}} the following surprising criterion was obtained: two Gorenstein algebras $A$, $\tilde A$ are isomorphic if and only if any two …
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a two-dimensional regular local ring with infinite residue class field. Then the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R} (I)= \bigoplus_{n \ge 0}I^n$ of $I$ is an almost Gorenstein graded ring in the sense of Goto-Takahashi-Taniguchi for every $\mathfrak{m}$-primary integrally closed ideal $I$ in $R$.
We answer a question of Celikbas, Dao, and Takahashi by establishing the following characterization of Gorenstein rings: a commutative noetherian local ring $(R,\mathfrak m)$ is Gorenstein if and only if it admits an integrally closed $\mathfrak m$-primary ideal of finite Gorenstein dimension. This is accomplished through a detailed study of certain test complexes. Along the way we construct such a test complex that detect finiteness of Gorenstein dimension, but not that of projective dimension.
Let $(A, \mathfrak{m})$ be a Noetherian local ring and $\mathfrak{F}=(I_{n})_{n\geq 0}$ a filtration. In this paper, we study the Gorenstein properties of the fiber cone $F(\mathfrak{F})$, where $\mathfrak{F}$ is a Hilbert filtration. Suppose that $F(\mathfrak{F})$ and $G(\mathfrak{F})$ are Cohen-Macaulay. If in addition, the associated graded ring $G(\mathfrak{F})$ is Gorenstein; similarly to the $I$-adic case, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition, in terms of lengths and minimal number of generators of ideals, for Gorensteiness of the fiber cone. Moreover, we find a description of …
The notion of $2$-almost Gorenstein ring is a generalization of the notion of almost Gorenstein ring in terms of Sally modules of canonical ideals. In this paper, we deal with two different topics related to $2$-almost Gorenstein rings. The purposes are to determine all the Ulrich ideals in $2$-almost Gorenstein rings and to clarify the structure of minimal free resolutions of $2$-almost Gorenstein rings.
Quasi-socle ideals, that is the ideals $I$ of the form $I= Q : \mathfrak{m}^q$ in Gorenstein numerical semigroup rings over fields are explored, where $Q$ is a parameter ideal, and $\mathfrak{m}$ is the maximal ideal in the base local ring, and $q \geq 1$ is an integer. The problems of when $I$ is integral over $Q$ and of when the associated graded ring $\mathrm{G}(I) = \bigoplus_{n \geq 0}I^n/I^{n+1}$ of $I$ is Cohen-Macaulay are studied. The problems are rather wild; examples are given.
In this paper, we state criteria of a Hibi ring to be level, non-Gorenstein and almost Gorenstein and to be non-level and almost Gorenstein in terms of the structure of the partially ordered set defining the Hibi ring. We also state a criterion of a ladder determinantal ring defined by 2-minors to be non-Gorenstein and almost Gorenstein in terms of the shape of the ladder.
We show that $F$-purity deforms in local $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein rings of prime characteristic $p>0$. Furthermore, we show that $F$-purity is $\mathfrak{m}$-adically stable in local Cohen-Macaulay $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein rings.
In this paper, for the development of the study of almost Gorenstein graded rings, we discuss some relations between almost Gorensteinness of Cohen--Macaulay homogeneous rings and their $h$-vectors. Concretely, for a Cohen--Macaulay homogeneous ring $R$, we give a sufficient condition for $R$ to be almost Gorenstein in terms of the $h$-vector of $R$ and we also characterize almost Gorenstein homogeneous domains with small socle degrees in terms of the $h$-vector of $R$. Moreover, we also provide the examples of almost Gorenstein homogeneous domains arising from lattice polytopes.
We extend some results on almost Gorenstein affine monomial curves to the nearly Gorenstein case. In particular, we prove that the Cohen-Macaulay type of a nearly Gorenstein monomial curve in $\mathbb{A}^4$ is at most $3$, answering a question of Stamate in this particular case. Moreover, we prove that, if $\mathcal C$ is a nearly Gorenstein affine monomial curve which is not Gorenstein and $n_1, \dots, n_ν$ are the minimal generators of the associated numerical semigroup, the elements of $\{n_1, \dots, \widehat{n_i}, \dots, n_ν\}$ are relatively coprime for every $i$.
In this paper we investigate the question of when the determinantal ring $R$ over a field $k$ is an almost Gorenstein local/graded ring in the sense of Goto, Takahashi, and the author. As a consequence of the main result, we see that if $R$ is a non-Gorenstein almost Gorenstein local/graded ring, then the ring $R$ has a minimal multiplicity.
There is given a characterization for the Rees algebras of parameters in a Gorenstein local ring to be almost Gorenstein graded rings. A characterization is also given for the Rees algebras of socle ideals of parameters. The latter one shows almost Gorenstein Rees algebras rather rarely exist for socle ideals, if the dimension of the base local ring is greater than two.
Starting with a commutative ring $R$ and an ideal $I$, it is possible to define a family of rings $R(I)_{a,b}$, with $a,b \in R$, as quotients of the Rees algebra $\oplus_{n \geq 0} I^nt^n$; among the rings appearing in this family we find Nagata's idealization and amalgamated duplication. Many properties of these rings depend only on $R$ and $I$ and not on $a,b$; in this paper we show that the Gorenstein and the almost Gorenstein properties are independent of $a,b$. More precisely, we characterize when the rings in the family are Gorenstein, complete intersection, or almost Gorenstein and we …
We prove that the Cohen-Macaulay type of an almost Gorenstein monomial curve $\mathcal C \subseteq \mathbb{A}^4$ is at most $3$, and make some considerations on the general case.
We prove that the finitistic test ideal $τ_{\rm fg}(R, Δ, \mathfrak{a}^t)$ coincides with the big test ideal $τ_{\rm b}(R, Δ, \mathfrak{a}^t)$ if the pair $(R,Δ)$ is numerically log $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein.
In this paper, we study simplicial complexes whose Stanley-Reisner rings are almost Gorenstein and have $a$-invariant zero. We call such a simplicial complex an almost Gorenstein* simplicial complex. To study the almost Gorenstein* property, we introduce a new class of simplicial complexes which we call uniformly Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes. A $d$-dimensional simplicial complex $Δ$ is said to be uniformly Cohen-Macaulay if it is Cohen-Macaulay and, for any facet $F$ of $Δ$, the simplicial complex $Δ\setminus\{F\}$ is Cohen-Macaulay of dimension $d$. We investigate fundamental algebraic…
We introduce classes of rings which are close to being Gorenstein. These rings arise naturally as specializations of rings of countable CM type. We study these rings in detail, and along the way generalize an old result of Teter which characterized Artinian rings which are Gorenstein rings modulo their socle.
Let $(R, \mathfrak{m}) $ be a Gorenstein local ring of dimension $d > 0$ and let $I$ be an ideal of $R$ such that $(0) \ne I \subsetneq R$ and $R/I$ is a Cohen-Macaulay ring of dimension $d$. There is given a complete answer to the question of when the idealization $A = R \ltimes I$ of $I$ over $R$ is an almost Gorenstein local ring.
We provide a characterization of the almost Gorenstein property of determinantal rings of a symmetric matrix of indeterminates over an infinite field. We give an explicit formula for ranks of the last two modules in the resolution of determinantal rings using Schur functors.
A commutative noetherian local ring $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ is Gorenstein if and only if every parameter ideal of $R$ is irreducible. Although irreducible parameter ideals may exist in non-Gorenstein rings, Marley, Rogers, and Sakurai show there exists an integer $\ell$ (depending on $R$) such that $R$ is Gorenstein if and only if there exists an irreducible parameter ideal contained in $\mathfrak{m}^\ell$. We give upper bounds for $\ell$ that depend primarily on the existence of certain systems of parameters in low powers of the maximal ideal.
The purpose of this paper is, as part of the stratification of Cohen-Macaulay rings, to investigate the question of when the fiber products are almost Gorenstein rings. We show that the fiber product $R \times_T S$ of Cohen-Macaulay local rings $R$, $S$ of the same dimension $d>0$ over a regular local ring $T$ with $\dim T=d-1$ is an almost Gorenstein ring if and only if so are $R$ and $S$. Besides, the other generalizations of Gorenstein properties are also explored.
The notion of almost Gorenstein ring given by Barucci and Fr{ö}berg \cite{BF} in the case where the local rings are analytically unramified is generalized, so that it works well also in the case where the rings are analytically ramified. As a sequel, the problem of when the endomorphism algebra $\m : \m$ of $\m$ is a Gorenstein ring is solved in full generality, where $\m$ denotes the maximal ideal in a given Cohen-Macaulay local ring of dimension one. Characterizations of almost Gorenstein rings are given in connection with the principle of idealization. Examples are explored.
The structure of the complex $\operatorname{\mathbf{R}Hom}_R(R/I,R)$ is explored for an Ulrich ideal $I$ in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring $R$. As a consequence, it is proved that in a one-dimensional almost Gorenstein but non-Gorenstein local ring, the only possible Ulrich ideal is the maximal ideal. It is also studied when Ulrich ideals have the same minimal number of generators.
The question of when the Rees algebra ${\mathcal R} (I)= \bigoplus_{n \ge 0}I^n$ of $I$ is an almost Gorenstein graded ring is explored, where $R$ is a two-dimensional regular local ring and $I$ a contracted ideal of $R$. It is known that ${\mathcal R} (I)$ is an almost Gorenstein graded ring for every integrally closed ideal $I$ of $R$. The main results of the present paper show that if $I$ is a contracted ideal with $\mathrm{o}(I) \le 2$, then ${\mathcal R} (I)$ is an almost Gorenstein graded ring, while if $\mathrm{o}(I) \ge 3$, then ${\mathcal R} (I)$ is not necessarily an almost Gorenstei…
To every Gorenstein algebra $A$ of finite dimension greater than 1 over a field ${\Bbb F}$ of characteristic zero, and a projection $π$ on its maximal ideal ${\mathfrak m}$ with range equal to the annihilator $\hbox{Ann}({\mathfrak m})$ of ${\mathfrak m}$, one can associate a certain algebraic hypersurface $S_π\subset{\mathfrak m}$. Such hypersurfaces possess remarkable properties. They can be used, for instance, to help decide whether two given Gorenstein algebras are isomorphic, which for ${\Bbb F}={\Bbb C}$ leads to interesting consequences in singularity theory. Also, for ${\Bbb F}={\Bbb R…
The notion of almost Gorenstein local ring introduced by V. Barucci and R. Fröberg for one-dimensional Noetherian local rings which are analytically unramified has been generalized by S. Goto, N. Matsuoka and T. T. Phuong to one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local rings, possessing canonical ideals. The present purpose is to propose a higher-dimensional notion and develop the basic theory. The graded version is also posed and explored.
Let $A$ be an Artinian Gorenstein algebra over an infinite field $k$ with either $\hbox{char}(k)=0$ or $\hbox{char}(k)>ν$, where $ν$ is the socle degree of $A$. To every such algebra and a linear projection $π$ on its maximal ideal ${\mathfrak m}$ with range equal to the socle $\hbox {Soc}(A)$ of $A$, one can associate a certain algebraic hypersurface $S_π\subset{\mathfrak m}$, which is the graph of a polynomial map $P_π:\hbox{ker}\,π\to \hbox{Soc}(A)\simeq k$. Recently, the author and his collaborators have obtained the following surprising criterion: two Artinian Gorenstein algebras $A$, $\t…
Let $A$ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring with $\operatorname{dim} A = d\ge 3$, possessing the canonical module ${\mathrm K}_A$. Let $a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_r$ $(3 \le r \le d)$ be a subsystem of parameters of $A$ and set $Q= (a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_r)$. It is shown that if the Rees algebra ${\mathcal R}(Q)$ of $Q$ is an almost Gorenstein graded ring, then $A$ is a regular local ring and $a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_r$ is a part of a regular system of parameters of $A$.
Let $R$ be the Ehrhart ring of the stable set polytope of a cycle graph which is not Gorenstein. We describe the non-Gorenstein locus of $\mathrm{Spec} R$. Further, we show that $R$ is almost Gorenstein. Moreover, we show that the conjecture of Hibi and Tsuchiya is true.
We focus on the structure of a homogeneous Gorenstein ideal $I$ of codimension three in a standard polynomial ring $R=\kk[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ over a field $\kk$, assuming that $I$ is generated in a fixed degree $d$. For such an ideal $I$ this degree comes along with the minimal number of generators of $I$ and the degree of the entries of the associated skew-symmetric matrix in a simple formula. We give an elementary characteristic-free argument to the effect that, for any such data linked by this formula, there exists a Gorenstein ideal $I$ of codimension three filling them. We conjecture that, f…
In this note we study trace ideals of canonical modules. Characterizations of the trace ideals in terms of annihilators of certain Ext modules are given. We apply our results to study many classes of rings close to being Gorenstein that appear in recent literature. We discuss the behavior of nearly Gorensteinness, introduced by Herzog-Hibi-Stamate, under reductions by regular sequences. A nearly Gorenstein version of the Tachikawa conjecture is posed, and an affirmative answer given for type 2 rings. We also introduce the class of weakly almost Gorenstein rings using the canonical module, and …
We study properties of the resolution of almost Gorenstein artinian algebras $R/I,$ i.e. algebras defined by ideals $I$ such that $I=J+(f),$ with $J$ Gorenstein ideal and $f\in R.$ Such algebras generalize the well known almost complete intersection artinian algebras. Then we give a new explicit description of the resolution and of the graded Betti numbers of almost complete intersection ideals of codimension $3$ and we characterize the ideals whose graded Betti numbers can be achieved using artinian monomial ideals.
In this paper, we introduce an invariant of Cohen-Macaulay local rings in terms of the reduction number of canonical ideals. The invariant can be defined in arbitrary Cohen-Macaulay rings and it measures how close to being Gorenstein. First, we clarify the relation between almost Gorenstein rings and nearly Gorenstein rings by using the invariant in dimension one. We next characterize the idealization of trace ideals over Gorenstein rings in terms of the invariant. It provides better prospects for a result of the almost Gorenstein property of idealization.
Levelness and almost Gorensteinness are well-studied properties on graded rings as a generalized notion of Gorensteinness. In the present paper, we study those properties for the edge rings of the complete multipartite graphs, denoted by $\Bbbk[K_{r_1,\ldots,r_n}]$ with $1 \leq r_1 \leq \cdots \leq r_n$. We give the complete characterization of which $\Bbbk[K_{r_1,\ldots,r_n}]$ is level in terms of $n$ and $r_1,\ldots,r_n$. Similarly, we also give the complete characterization of which $\Bbbk[K_{r_1,\ldots,r_n}]$ is almost Gorenstein in terms of $n$ and $r_1,\ldots,r_n$.
