We compute the canonical class of certain Rees algebras. Our formula generalizes that of Herzog and Vasconcelos. Its proof relies on the fact that the formation of the canonical module commutes with subintersections in important cases. As an application we treat the classical determinantal ideals and the corresponding algebras of minors.
We show that several properties of the theory of Rees algebras of modules become more transparent using the category of coherent functors rather than working directly with modules. In particular, we show that the Rees algebra is induced by a canonical map of coherent functors.
Let $I \subset R = \mathbb{F}[x_1,x_2]$ be a height two ideal minimally generated by three homogeneous polynomials of the same degree $d$, where $\mathbb{F}$ is a field of characteristic zero. We use the theory of $D$-modules to deduce information about the defining equations of the Rees algebra of $I$. Let $\mathcal{K}$ be the kernel of the canonical map $α: \text{Sym}(I) \rightarrow \text{Rees}(I)$ from the symmetric algebra of $I$ onto the Rees algebra of $I$. We prove that $\mathcal{K}$ can be described as the solution set of a system of differential equations, that the whole bigraded stru…
This paper shows that mixed multiplicities and the multiplicity of Rees modules of good filtrations and that of their reductions are the same. As an application of this result, we obtain interesting results on mixed multiplicities and the multiplicity of Rees modules.
The acquisition of the defining equations of Rees algebras is a natural way to study these algebras and allows certain invariants and properties to be deduced. In this paper, we consider Rees algebras of codimension 2 perfect ideals of hypersurface rings and produce a minimal generating set for their defining ideals. Then, using generic Bourbaki ideals, we study Rees algebras of modules with projective dimension one over hypersurface rings. We describe the defining ideal of such algebras and determine Cohen-Macaulayness and other invariants.
Generic Bourbaki ideals were introduced by Simis, Ulrich and Vasconcelos to study the Cohen-Macaulay property of Rees algebras of modules. In this article we prove that the same technique can sometimes be used to investigate the Cohen-Macaulay property of fiber cones of modules and to study the defining ideal of Rees algebras. This is possible as long as the Rees algebra of a given module $E$ is a deformation of the Rees algebra of a generic Bourbaki ideal $I$ of $E$. Our main technical result provides a deformation condition that in fact extends the applicability of generic Bourbaki ideals to…
Let $R$ be an algebra essentially of finite type over a field $k$ and let $Ω_k(R)$ be its module of Kähler differentials over $k$. If $R$ is a homogeneous complete intersection and $\mathrm{char}(k)=0$, we prove that $Ω_k(R)$ is of linear type whenever its Rees algebra is Cohen-Macaulay and locally at every homogeneous prime $\mathfrak{p}$ the embedding dimension of $R_{\mathfrak{p}}$ is at most twice its dimension.
We provide a class of commutative Noetherian domains $R$ of dimension $d$ such that every finitely generated projective $R$-module $P$ of rank $d$ splits off a free summand of rank one. On this class, we also show that $P$ is cancellative. At the end we give some applications to the number of generators of a module over the Rees algebras.
In this paper, we consider a finite, torsion-free module $E$ over a Gorenstein local ring. We provide sufficient conditions for $E$ to be of linear type and for the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(E)$ of $E$ to be Cohen-Macaulay. Our results are obtained by constructing a generic Bourbaki $I$ ideal of $E$ and exploiting properties of the residual intersections of $I$.
We consider a rational map $ϕ: \mathbb{P}_k^{m} \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}_k^n$ that is a parameterization of an $m$-dimensional variety. Our main goal is to study the $(m-1)$-dimensional fibers of $ϕ$ in relation to the $m$-th local cohomology modules of the Rees algebra of its base ideal.
We find conditions on the local cohomology modules of multi-Rees algebras of admissible filtrations which enable us to predict joint reduction numbers. As a consequence we are able to prove a generalisation of a result of Reid-Roberts-Vitulli in the setting of analytically unramified local rings for completeness of power products of complete ideals.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of Ratliff-Rush closure of modules and explore whether the condition of the Ratliff-Rush closure coincides with the integral closure. The main result characterizes the condition in terms of the normality of the projective scheme of the Rees algebra, which generalizes the result of S. Goto and N. Matsuoka. In conclusion, we shall give a criterion for the Buchsbaum Rees algebras.
The Sally module of a Rees algebra $\BB$ relative to one of its Rees subalgebras $Å$ is a construct that can be used as a mediator for the trade-off of cohomological (e.g. depth) information between $\BB$ and the corresponding associated graded ring for several types of filtrations. While originally devised to deal with filtrations of finite colength, here we treat aspects of these developments for filtrations in higher dimensions as well.
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero, and $R=k[x_1, \ldots, x_d]$ with $d \geq 3$ be a polynomial ring in $d$ variables. Let $\m=(x_1, \ldots, x_d)$ be the homogeneous maximal ideal of $R$. Let $\mathcal{K}$ be the kernel of the canonical map $α: \sym(I) \rightarrow \R(I)$, where $\sym(I)$ (resp. $\R(I)$) denotes the symmetric algebra (resp. the Rees algebra) of an ideal $I$ in $R$. We study $\mathcal{K}$ when $I$ is a height two perfect ideal minimally generated by $d+1$ homogeneous elements of same degree and satisfies $G_d$, that is, the minimal number of generators of the ideal $I_{\m…
Let $A$ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring with $\operatorname{dim} A = d\ge 3$, possessing the canonical module ${\mathrm K}_A$. Let $a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_r$ $(3 \le r \le d)$ be a subsystem of parameters of $A$ and set $Q= (a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_r)$. It is shown that if the Rees algebra ${\mathcal R}(Q)$ of $Q$ is an almost Gorenstein graded ring, then $A$ is a regular local ring and $a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_r$ is a part of a regular system of parameters of $A$.
Let $I$ be an ideal whose symbolic Rees algebra is Noetherian. For $m \geq 1$, the $m$-th symbolic defect, sdefect$(I,m)$, of $I$ is defined to be the minimal number of generators of the module $\frac{I^{(m)}}{I^m}$. We prove that sdefect$(I,m)$ is eventually quasi-polynomial as a function in $m$. We compute the symbolic defect explicitly for certain monomial ideals arising from graphs, termed cover ideals. We go on to give a formula for the Waldschmidt constant, an asymptotic invariant measuring the growth of the degrees of generators of symbolic powers, for ideals whose symbolic Rees algebra…
Many results are known about test ideals and $F$-singularities for ${\bf Q}$-Gorenstein rings. In this paper we generalize many of these results to the case when the symbolic Rees algebra $O_X \oplus O_X(-K_X) \oplus O_X(-2K_X) \oplus ...$ is finitely generated (or more generally, in the log setting for $-K_X - Δ$). In particular, we show that the $F$-jumping numbers of $τ(X, a^t)$ are discrete and rational. We show that test ideals $τ(X)$ can be described by alterations as in Blickle-Schwede-Tucker (and hence show that splinters are strongly $F$-regular in this setting -- recovering a result …
Recently, Peeva and the second author constructed irreducible projective varieties with regularity much larger than their degree, yielding counterexamples to the Eisenbud-Goto Conjecture. Their construction involved two new ideas: Rees-like algebras and step-by-step homogenization. Yet, all of these varieties are singular and the nature of the geometry of these projective varieties was left open. The purpose of this paper is to study the singularities inherent in this process. We compute the codimension of the singular locus of an arbitrary Rees-like algebra over a polynomial ring. We then sho…
We prove that the Hilbert-Kunz function of the ideal $(I,It)$ of the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(I)$, where $I$ is an $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal of a $1$-dimensional local ring $(R,\mathfrak{m})$, is a quasi-polynomial in $e$, for large $e.$ For $s \in \mathbb{N}$, we calculate the Hilbert-Samuel function of the $R$-module $I^{[s]}$ and obtain an explicit description of the generalized Hilbert-Kunz function of the ideal $(I,It)\mathcal{R}(I)$ when $I$ is a parameter ideal in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of dimension $d \geq 2$, proving that the generalized Hilbert-Kunz function is a piecewise p…
In this article, we compute the Buchsbaum-Rim function of two variables associated to a direct sum of cyclic modules and give a formula for the last positive associated Buchsbaum-Rim multiplicity in terms of the ordinary Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity of an ideal. This is a generalization of a formula for the last positive Buchsbaum-Rim multiplicity given by Kirby and Rees.
The associated Buchsbaum-Rim multiplicities of a module are a descending sequence of non-negative integers. These invariants of a module are a generalization of the classical Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity of an ideal. In this article, we compute the associated Buchsbaum-Rim multiplicity of a direct sum of cyclic modules and give a formula for the second to last positive Buchsbaum-Rim multiplicity in terms of the ordinary Buchsbaum-Rim and Hilbert-Samuel multiplicities. This is a natural generalization of a formula given by Kirby and Rees.
In this note, we consider a situation that is generally used as an intermediate technical step in proving the Artin-Rees lemma but otherwise is not much discussed in introductory accounts of commutative algebra. I hope to show in this note that such technical step deserves more recognition and emphasis in any introduction to commutative algebra because it can be used to prove some significant results in a straight-forward manner, including a generalization of a theorem by Pierre Cartier and John Tate.
The aim of this survey is to discuss invariants of Cohen-Macaulay local rings that admit a canonical module. Attached to each such ring R with a canonical ideal C, there are integers--the type of R, the reduction number of C--that provide valuable metrics to express the deviation of R from being a Gorenstein ring. We enlarge this list with other integers--the roots of R and several canonical degrees. The latter are multiplicity based functions of the Rees algebra of C. We give a uniform presentation of three degrees arising from common roots. Finally we experiment with ways to extend one of th…
We show the Cohen-Macaulayness and describe the canonical module of residual intersections $J=\mathfrak{a}\colon_R I$ in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring $R$, under sliding depth type hypotheses. For this purpose, we construct and study, using a recent article of Hassanzadeh and the second named author, a family of complexes that contains important informations on a residual intersection and its canonical module. We also determine several invariants of residual intersections as the graded canonical module, the Hilbert series, the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and the type. Finally, whenever $I$ is…
