Consider a height two ideal,
$I$, which is minimally generated by $m$ homogeneous forms of degree $d$ in the polynomial ring $R=k[x,y]$. Suppose that one column in the homogeneous presenting matrix $\f$ of $I$ has entries of degree $n$ and all of the other entries of $\f$ are linear. We identify an explicit generating set for the ideal $\Cal A$ which defines the Rees algebra $\Cal R=R[It]$; so $\Cal R=S/\Cal A$ for the polynomial ring $S=R[T_1,...,T_m]$. We resolve $\Cal R$ as an $S$-module and $I^s$ as an $R$-module, for all powers $s$. The proof uses the homogeneous coordinate ring, $A=S/H$, of a rational normal scroll, with $H\subseteq \Cal A$. The ideal $\Cal AA$ is isomorphic to the $n^{\text{th}}$ symbolic power of a height one prime ideal $K$ of $A$. The ideal $K^{(n)}$ is generated by monomials. Whenever possible, we study $A/K^{(n)}$ in place of $A/\Cal AA$ because the generators of $K^{(n)}$ are much less complicated then the generators of $\Cal AA$. We obtain a filtration of $K^{(n)}$ in which the factors are polynomial rings, hypersurface rings, or modules resolved by generalized Eagon-Northcott complexes. The generators of $I$ parameterize an algebraic curve $\Cal C$ in projective $m-1$ space. The defining equations of the special fiber ring $\Cal R/(x,y)\Cal R$ yield a solution of the implicitization problem for $\Cal C$.
We show that a rational normal scroll can in general be set-theoretically defined by a proper subset of the 2-minors of the associated two-row matrix. This allows us to find a class of rational normal scrolls that are almost set-theoretic complete intersections.
We determine the equations of the blowup of $\mathbb{P}^n$ along a $d$-fold rational normal scroll $S$, and we prove that the Rees ring and special fiber ring of $S \subseteq \mathbb{P}^n$ are Koszul algebras.
We describe a minimal set of generators of the defining ideal of the Rees Algebra associated to a proper parametrization of any monoid hypersurface. In the case of plane curves, we recover a known description for rational parametrizations having a syzygy of minimal degree (μ=1). We also show that our approach can be applied to parametrizations of rational surfaces having a Hilbert-Burch resolution with μ_1=μ_2=1.
We study the defining equations of the Rees algebra of ideals arising from curve parametrizations in the plane and in rational normal scrolls, inspired by the work of Madsen and Kustin, Polini and Ulrich. The curves are related by work of Bernardi, Gimigliano and Ida, and we use this framework to relate the defining equations.
Let X be a set of smooth points in P^2, and I = \oplus_{t >= d} I_t the defining ideal of X. In this paper, we give a set of defining equations for the Rees algebra R(I_{d+1}) of the ideal generated by I_{d+1}. This study give information to completely answer questions on the defining ideals of projective embeddings of the blowup of P^2 along the points in X, which has been studied by many authors. In this paper, we also study the asymptotic behaviour of the Rees algebras R(I_t) of the ideal generated by I_t, as t gets large.
The purpose of this paper is to prove that the symbolic Rees rings of ideals defining certain finite sets of points in the projective plane over an algebraically closed field are finitely generated using a ring theoretical criterion which is known as Huneke's criterion.
We exhibit a set of minimal generators of the defining ideal of the Rees Algebra associated to the ideal of three bivariate homogeneous polynomials parametrizing a proper rational curve in projective plane, having a minimal syzygy of degree 2.
The acquisition of the defining equations of Rees algebras is a natural way to study these algebras and allows certain invariants and properties to be deduced. In this paper, we consider Rees algebras of codimension 2 perfect ideals of hypersurface rings and produce a minimal generating set for their defining ideals. Then, using generic Bourbaki ideals, we study Rees algebras of modules with projective dimension one over hypersurface rings. We describe the defining ideal of such algebras and determine Cohen-Macaulayness and other invariants.
Generic Bourbaki ideals were introduced by Simis, Ulrich and Vasconcelos to study the Cohen-Macaulay property of Rees algebras of modules. In this article we prove that the same technique can sometimes be used to investigate the Cohen-Macaulay property of fiber cones of modules and to study the defining ideal of Rees algebras. This is possible as long as the Rees algebra of a given module $E$ is a deformation of the Rees algebra of a generic Bourbaki ideal $I$ of $E$. Our main technical result provides a deformation condition that in fact extends the applicability of generic Bourbaki ideals to…
In this paper, we are mainly concerned with the blow-up algebras of the secant varieties of balanced rational normal scrolls. In the first part, we give implicit defining equations of their associated Rees algebras and fiber cones. Consequently, we can tell that the fiber cones are Cohen--Macaulay normal domains. Meanwhile, these fiber cones have rational singularities in characteristic zero, and are $F$-rational in positive characteristic. The Gorensteinness of the fiber cones can also be characterized. In the second part, we compute the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularities and $\mathbf{a}$-inva…
We consider ideals of minors of a matrix, ideals of minors of a symmetric matrix, and ideals of Pfaffians of an alternating matrix. Assuming these ideals are of generic height, we characterize the condition $G_{s}$ for these ideals in terms of the heights of other ideals of minors or Pfaffians of the same matrix. We additionally obtain bounds on the generation and concentration degrees of the Rees rings of a subclass of such ideals via specialization of the Rees rings in the generic case. We do this by proving, given sufficient height conditions on ideals of minors or Pfaffians of the matrix, …
In this short paper, we show that the fiber cones of rational normal scrolls are Cohen-Macaulay. As an application, we compute their Castelnuovo-Mumford regularities and $\mathbf{a}$-invariants, as well as the reduction number of the defining ideals of the rational normal scrolls. We also characterize the Gorensteinness of the fiber cone.
We study the Rees algebra of a perfect Gorenstein ideal of codimension 3 in a hypersurface ring. We provide a minimal generating set of the defining ideal of these rings by introducing a modified Jacobian dual and applying a recursive algorithm. Once the defining equations are known, we explore properties of these Rees algebras such as Cohen-Macaulayness and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity.
We compute a minimal bigraded resolution of the Rees Algebra associated to a proper rational parametrization of a monomial plane curve. We describe explicitly both the bigraded Betti numbers and the maps of the resolution in terms of a generalized version of the Euclidean Algorithm. We also explore the relation between pencils of adjoints of the monomial plane curve and elements in a suitable piece of the defining ideal of the Rees Algebra.
Let $R = k[x]/I$ where $I$ is the defining ideal of a rational normal $k$-scroll. We compute the Betti numbers of the ground field $\mathbb{k}$ as a module over $R$. For $k = 2$, we give the minimal free resolution of $\mathbb{k}$ over $R$.
When $R$ is a Noetherian ring and we have a family of ideals in which every ideal contains at least one nonzero divisor, then it is already known that the defining ideal of the multi-Rees algebra of these ideals is equal to a saturated ideal. In such a case to get the defining ideal of the multi-Rees algebra we only need to saturate the first syzygies of direct sum of this family of ideals. However, this fact is not true, when at least one of these ideals does not contain any nonzero divisor. In this paper we show that the defining ideal of the multi-Rees algebra of a family of ideals of a pol…
In this article we study the defining ideal of Rees algebras of ideals of star configurations. We characterize when these ideals are of linear type and provide sufficient conditions for them to be of fiber type. In the case of star configurations of height two, we give a full description of the defining ideal of the Rees algebra, by explicitly identifying a minimal generating set.
There is a natural epimorphism from the symmetric algebra to the Rees algebra of an ideal. When this epimorphism is an isomorphism, we say that the ideal is of linear type. Given two determinantal rings over a field, we consider the diagonal ideal, the kernel of the multiplication map. We prove that the diagonal ideal is of linear type and recover the defining ideal of the Rees algebra in some special cases. The special fiber ring of the diagonal ideal is the homogeneous coordinate ring of the join variety.
In this paper we describe the defining equations of the Rees algebra and the special fiber ring of a truncation I of a complete intersection ideal in a polynomial ring over a field with homogeneous maximal ideal m. To describe explicitly the Rees algebra R(I) in terms of generators and relations we map another Rees ring R(M) onto it, where M is the direct sum of powers of m. We compute a Groebner basis of the ideal defining R(M). It turns out that the normal domain R(M) is a Koszul algebra and from this we deduce that in many instances R(I) is a Koszul algebra as well.
Let I be an ideal of height two in R=k[x_0,x_1] generated by forms of the same degree, and let K be the ideal of defining equations of the Rees algebra of I. Suppose that the second largest column degree in the syzygy matrix of I is e. We give an algorithm for computing the minimal generators of K whose degree is at least e, as well as a simple formula for the bidegrees of these generators. In the case where I is an almost complete intersection, we give a generating set for each graded piece K_(i,*) with i>=e-1.
Generalizing techniques that prove that Veronese subrings are Koszul, we show that Rees and multi-Rees algebras of certain types of principal strongly stable ideals are Koszul. We provide explicit Gröbner basis for the defining ideals of these multi-Rees algebras with squarefree initial monomials, to show that they are also normal Cohen-Macaulay domains.
In this paper we describe the equations defining the multi-Rees algebra $R[I_1^{a_1}t_1,\dots,I_r^{a_r}t_r]$, where $R$ is a Noetherian ring and the ideals are generated by subsets of a fixed weak regular sequence.
Let $I \subset R = \mathbb{F}[x_1,x_2]$ be a height two ideal minimally generated by three homogeneous polynomials of the same degree $d$, where $\mathbb{F}$ is a field of characteristic zero. We use the theory of $D$-modules to deduce information about the defining equations of the Rees algebra of $I$. Let $\mathcal{K}$ be the kernel of the canonical map $α: \text{Sym}(I) \rightarrow \text{Rees}(I)$ from the symmetric algebra of $I$ onto the Rees algebra of $I$. We prove that $\mathcal{K}$ can be described as the solution set of a system of differential equations, that the whole bigraded stru…
In this article, we find the equations defining the Rees algebra for certain Monomial Curves explicitly and use them to prove that the blowup scheme is not smooth. This proves a conjecture of Francia in affirmative, which says that a dimension one prime in a regular local ring is a complete intersection if it has a smooth blowup.
In this paper, we shall study finite generation of symbolic Rees rings of the defining ideal ${\frak p}$ of the space monomial curve $(t^a, t^b, t^c)$ for pairwise coprime integers $a$, $b$, $c$. Suppose that the base field is of characteristic $0$ and the above ideal ${\frak p}$ is minimally generated by three polynomials. Under the assumption that the homogeneous element $ξ$ of the minimal degree in ${\frak p}$ is the negative curve, we determine the minimal degree of an element $η$ such that the pair $\{ ξ, η\}$ satisfies Huneke's criterion in the case where the symbolic Rees ring is Noethe…
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero, and $R=k[x_1, \ldots, x_d]$ with $d \geq 3$ be a polynomial ring in $d$ variables. Let $\m=(x_1, \ldots, x_d)$ be the homogeneous maximal ideal of $R$. Let $\mathcal{K}$ be the kernel of the canonical map $α: \sym(I) \rightarrow \R(I)$, where $\sym(I)$ (resp. $\R(I)$) denotes the symmetric algebra (resp. the Rees algebra) of an ideal $I$ in $R$. We study $\mathcal{K}$ when $I$ is a height two perfect ideal minimally generated by $d+1$ homogeneous elements of same degree and satisfies $G_d$, that is, the minimal number of generators of the ideal $I_{\m…
We prove that the multi-Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(I_1 \oplus \cdots \oplus I_r)$ of a collection of strongly stable ideals $I_1, \ldots, I_r$ is of fiber type. In particular, we provide a Gröbner basis for its defining ideal as a union of a Gröbner basis for its special fiber and binomial syzygies. We also study the Koszulness of $\mathcal{R}(I_1 \oplus \cdots \oplus I_r)$ based on parameters associated to the collection. Furthermore, we establish a quadratic Gröbner basis of the defining ideal of $\mathcal{R}(I_1 \oplus I_2)$ where each of the strongly stable ideals has two quadric Borel gene…
Let $A$ be the homogeneous coordinate ring of a rational normal scroll. The ring $A$ is equal to the quotient of a polynomial ring $S$ by the ideal generated by the two by two minors of a scroll matrix $ψ$ with two rows and $\ell$ catalecticant blocks. The class group of $A$ is cyclic, and is infinite provided $\ell$ is at least two. One generator of the class group is $[J]$, where $J$ is the ideal of $A$ generated by the entries of the first column of $ψ$. The positive powers of $J$ are well-understood, in the sense that the $n^{\text{th}}$ ordinary power, the $n^{th}$ symmetric power, and th…
We determine the defining equations of the Rees algebra and of the special fiber ring of the ideal of maximal minors of a $2\times n$ sparse matrix. We prove that their initial algebras are ladder determinantal rings. This allows us to show that the Rees algebra and the special fiber ring are Cohen-Macaulay domains, they are Koszul, they have rational singularities in characteristic zero and are F-rational in positive characteristic.
In this paper, we shall study finite generation of symbolic Rees rings of the defining ideal of the space monomial curves $(t^a, t^b, t^c)$ for pairwise coprime integers $a$, $b$, $c$ such that $(a,b,c) \neq (1,1,1)$. If such a ring is not finitely generated over a base field, then it is a counterexample to the Hilbert's fourteenth problem. Finite generation of such rings is deeply related to existence of negative curves on certain normal projective surfaces. We study a sufficient condition (Definition 3.6) for existence of a negative curve. Using it, we prove that, in the case of $(a+b+c)^2 >…
Consider the rational map $ϕ: \mathbb{P}^{n-1}_{\mathbf k} \stackrel{[f_0:\cdots: f_n]}{\longrightarrow} \mathbb{P}^{n}_{\mathbf k}$ defined by homogeneous polynomials $f_0,\dots,f_n$ of the same degree $d$ in a polynomial ring $R=\mathbf k [x_1,\dots,x_n]$ over a field $\mathbf k$. Suppose $I=(f_0,\dots,f_n)$ is a height two perfect ideal satisfying $μ(I_p)\leq\dim R_p$ for $p\in \operatorname{Spec} (R) \setminus V(x_1,\dots, x_n)$. We study the equations defining the graph of $ϕ$ whose coordinate ring is the Rees algebra $R[It]$. We provide new methods to construct these equations using work…
We study the defining equations of the Rees algebra of square-free monomial ideals in a polynomial ring over a field. We determine that when an ideal $I$ is generated by $n$ square-free monomials of the same degree then $I$ has relation type at most $n-2$ as long as $n \leq 5$. In general, we establish the defining equations of the Rees algebra in this case. Furthermore, we give a class of examples with relation type at least $n-2$, where $n=μ(I)$. We also provide new classes of ideals of linear type. We propose the construction of a graph, namely the generator graph of an ideal, where the mon…
Consider a grade 2 perfect ideal $I$ in $R=k[x_1,\cdots,x_d]$ which is generated by forms of the same degree. Assume that the presentation matrix $φ$ is almost linear, that is, all but the last column of $φ$ consist of entries which are linear. For such ideals, we find explicit forms of the defining ideal of the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(I)$. We also introduce the notion of iterated Jacobian duals.
Building on previous work by the same authors, we show that certain ideals defining Gorenstein rings have expected resurgence, and thus satisfy the stable Harbourne Conjecture. In prime characteristic, we can take any radical ideal defining a Gorenstein ring in a regular ring, provided its symbolic powers are given by saturations with the maximal ideal. While this property is not suitable for reduction to characteristic $p$, we show that a similar result holds in equicharacteristic $0$ under the additional hypothesis that the symbolic Rees algebra of $I$ is noetherian.
We find the defining equations of Rees rings of linearly presented height three Gorenstein ideals. To prove our main theorem we use local cohomology techniques to bound the maximum generator degree of the torsion submodule of symmetric powers in order to conclude that the defining equations of the Rees algebra and the special fiber ring have the same image in the symmetric algebra. We show that this image is the unmixed part of the ideal generated by the maximal minors of a matrix of linear forms which is annihilated by a vector of indeterminates, and otherwise has maximal possible grade. An i…
Let $S={\sf k}[X_1,\dots, X_n]$ be a polynomial ring, where ${\sf k}$ is a field. This article deals with the defining ideal of the Rees algebra of squarefree monomial ideal generated in degree $n-2$. As a consequence, we prove that Betti numbers of powers of the cover ideal of the complement graph of a tree do not depend on the choice of tree. Further, we study the regularity and Betti numbers of powers of cover ideals associated to certain graphs.
We investigate the Rees algebra and the toric ring of the squarefree monomial ideal associated to the three-dimensional Ferrers diagram. Under the projection property condition, we describe explicitly the presentation ideals of the Rees algebra and the toric ring. We show that the toric ring is a Koszul Cohen--Macaulay normal domain, while the Rees algebra is Koszul and the defining ideal is of fiber type.
Let $G$ be a simple graph on $n$ vertices and $J_G$ denote the binomial edge ideal of $G$ in the polynomial ring $S = \mathbb{K}[x_1, \ldots, x_n, y_1, \ldots, y_n].$ In this article, we compute the second graded Betti numbers of $J_G$, and we obtain a minimal presentation of it when $G$ is a tree or a unicyclic graph. We classify all graphs whose binomial edge ideals are almost complete intersection, prove that they are generated by a $d$-sequence and that the Rees algebra of their binomial edge ideal is Cohen-Macaulay. We also obtain an explicit description of the defining ideal of the Rees …
Let $G$ be a bipartite graph and $I=I(G)$ be its edge ideal. The aim of this note is to investigate different aspects of the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(I)$ of $I$. We compute its regularity and the universal Gröbner basis of its defining equations; interestingly, both of them are described in terms of the combinatorics of $G$. We apply these ideas to study the regularity of the powers of $I$. For any $s \ge \text{match}(G)+\lvert E(G) \rvert +1$ we prove that $\text{reg}(I^{s+1})=\text{reg}(I^s)+2$.
Given a monomial $m$ in a polynomial ring and a subset $L$ of the variables of the polynomial ring, the principal $L$-Borel ideal generated by $m$ is the ideal generated by all monomials which can be obtained from $m$ by successively replacing variables of $m$ by those which are in $L$ and have smaller index. Given a collection $\mathcal{I}=\{I_1,\ldots,I_r\}$ where $I_i$ is $L_i$-Borel for $i=1,\ldots,r$ (where the subsets $L_1,\ldots,L_r$ may be different for each ideal), we prove in essence that if the bipartite incidence graph among the subsets $L_1,\ldots,L_r$ is chordal bipartite, then t…
The $j$-multiplicity plays an important role in the intersection theory of Stückrad-Vogel cycles, while recent developments confirm the connections between the $ε$-multiplicity and equisingularity theory. In this paper we establish, under some constraints, a relationship between the $j$-multiplicity of an ideal and the degree of its fiber cone. As a consequence, we are able to compute the $j$-multiplicity of all the ideals defining rational normal scrolls. By using the standard monomial theory, we can also compute the $j$- and $ε$-multiplicity of ideals defining determinantal varieties: The fo…
In this paper we examine the role of four Hilbert functions in the determination of the defining relations of the Rees algebra of almost complete intersections of finite colength. Because three of the corresponding modules are Artinian, some of these relationships are very effective, opening up tracks to the determination of the equations and also to processes of going from homologically defined sets of equations to higher degrees ones assembled by resultants.
We give formulas and effective sharp bounds for the degree of multi-graded rational maps and provide some effective and computable criteria for birationality in terms of their algebraic and geometric properties. We also extend the Jacobian dual criterion to the multi-graded setting. Our approach is based on the study of blow-up algebras, including syzygies, of the ideal generated by the defining polynomials of the rational map. A key ingredient is a new algebra that we call the "saturated special fiber ring", which turns out to be a fundamental tool to analyze the degree of a rational map. We …
In this paper, we focus on the initial degree and the vanishing of the Valabrega-Valla module of a pair of monomials ideals $J\subseteq I$ in a polynomials ring over a field $\mathbb{K}$. We prove that the initial degree of this module is bounded above by the maximum degree of a minimal generators of $J$. For edge ideals of graphs, a complete characterization of the vanishing of the Valabrega-Valla module is given. For higher degree ideals, we find classes which the Valabrega-Valla module vanishes. For the case that $J$ is the facet ideal of a clutter $\mathcal{C}$ and $I$ is the defining idea…
