Let X be a set of smooth points in P^2, and I = \oplus_{t >= d} I_t the defining ideal of X. In this paper, we give a set of defining equations for the Rees algebra R(I_{d+1}) of the ideal generated by I_{d+1}. This study give information to completely answer questions on the defining ideals of projective embeddings of the blowup of P^2 along the points in X, which has been studied by many authors. In this paper, we also study the asymptotic behaviour of the Rees algebras R(I_t) of the ideal generated by I_t, as t gets large.
The purpose of this paper is to prove the following theorem of uniform Artin-Rees properties: Let $A$ be an excellent (in fact J-2) ring and let $N\subset M$ be two finitely generated $A$-modules such that ${\rm dim}(M/N)\leq 1$. Then there exists an integer $s\geq 1$ such that, for all integers $n\geq s$ and for all ideals $I$ of $A$, $I^{n}M\cap N=I^{n-s}(I^{s}M\cap N)$.
The purpose of this paper is to show how Rees algebras can be applied in the study of singularities embedded in smooth schemes over perfect fields. In particular, we will study situations in which the multiplicity of a hypersurface is a multiple of the characteristic. As another application, here we indicate how the use of these algebras has trivialized local-global questions in resolution of singularities over fields of characteristic zero.
We study the Rees algebra of a perfect Gorenstein ideal of codimension 3 in a hypersurface ring. We provide a minimal generating set of the defining ideal of these rings by introducing a modified Jacobian dual and applying a recursive algorithm. Once the defining equations are known, we explore properties of these Rees algebras such as Cohen-Macaulayness and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity.
The acquisition of the defining equations of Rees algebras is a natural way to study these algebras and allows certain invariants and properties to be deduced. In this paper, we consider Rees algebras of codimension 2 perfect ideals of hypersurface rings and produce a minimal generating set for their defining ideals. Then, using generic Bourbaki ideals, we study Rees algebras of modules with projective dimension one over hypersurface rings. We describe the defining ideal of such algebras and determine Cohen-Macaulayness and other invariants.
Let G be a perfect graph and let J be its ideal of vertex covers. We show that the Rees algebra of J is normal and that this algebra is Gorenstein if G is unmixed. Then we give a description--in terms of cliques--of the symbolic Rees algebra and the Simis cone of the edge ideal of G.
Recently, Peeva and the second author constructed irreducible projective varieties with regularity much larger than their degree, yielding counterexamples to the Eisenbud-Goto Conjecture. Their construction involved two new ideas: Rees-like algebras and step-by-step homogenization. Yet, all of these varieties are singular and the nature of the geometry of these projective varieties was left open. The purpose of this paper is to study the singularities inherent in this process. We compute the codimension of the singular locus of an arbitrary Rees-like algebra over a polynomial ring. We then sho…
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero, and $R=k[x_1, \ldots, x_d]$ with $d \geq 3$ be a polynomial ring in $d$ variables. Let $\m=(x_1, \ldots, x_d)$ be the homogeneous maximal ideal of $R$. Let $\mathcal{K}$ be the kernel of the canonical map $α: \sym(I) \rightarrow \R(I)$, where $\sym(I)$ (resp. $\R(I)$) denotes the symmetric algebra (resp. the Rees algebra) of an ideal $I$ in $R$. We study $\mathcal{K}$ when $I$ is a height two perfect ideal minimally generated by $d+1$ homogeneous elements of same degree and satisfies $G_d$, that is, the minimal number of generators of the ideal $I_{\m…
Let $V$ be a smooth scheme over a field $k$, and let $\{I_n, n\geq 0\}$ be a filtration of sheaves of ideals in $\calo_V$, such that $I_0=\calo_V$, and $I_s\cdot I_t\subset I_{s+t}$. In such case $\bigoplus I_n$ is called a Rees algebra. A Rees algebra is said to be a Diff-algebra if, for any two integers $N>n$ and any differential operator $D$ of order $n$, $D(I_N)\subset I_{N-n}$. Any Rees algebra extends to a smallest Diff-algebra. There are two ways to define extensions of Rees algebras, and both are of interest in singularity theory. One is that defined by taking integral closures (in whi…
This work is about symbolic powers of codimension two perfect ideals in a standard polynomial ring over a field, where the entries of the corresponding presentation matrix are general linear forms. The main contribution of the present approach is the use of the birational theory underlying the nature of the ideal and the details of a deep interlacing between generators of its symbolic powers and the inversion factors stemming from the inverse map to the birational map defined by the linear system spanned by the generators of this ideal. A full description of the corresponding symbolic Rees alg…
Consider a grade 2 perfect ideal $I$ in $R=k[x_1,\cdots,x_d]$ which is generated by forms of the same degree. Assume that the presentation matrix $φ$ is almost linear, that is, all but the last column of $φ$ consist of entries which are linear. For such ideals, we find explicit forms of the defining ideal of the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(I)$. We also introduce the notion of iterated Jacobian duals.
The goal of this paper is the fine structure of the ideals in the title, with emphasis on the properties of the associated Rees algebra and the special fiber. The watershed between the present approach and some of the previous work in the literature is that here one does not assume that the ideals in question satisfy the common generic properties. One exception is a recent work of N. P. H. Lan which inspired the present work. Here we recover and extend his work. We strongly focus on the behavior of the ideals of minors of the corresponding so-called Hilbert--Burch matrix and on conjugation fea…
In this paper we define an interesting family of perfect ideals of codimension three, with five generators, of Cohen-Macaulay type two with trivial multiplication on the Tor algebra. This family is likely to play a key role in classifying perfect ideals with five generators of type two.
One deals with catalectic codimension two perfect ideals and certain degenerations thereof, with a view towards the nature of their symbolic powers. In the spirit of [10] one considers linearly presented such ideals, only now in the situation where the number of variables is sufficiently larger than the size of the matrix, yet still stays within reasonable bounds.
Let C be a clutter and let I be its edge ideal. We present a combinatorial description of the minimal generators of the symbolic Rees algebra Rs(I) of I. It is shown that the minimal generators of Rs(I) are in one to one correspondence with the irreducible parallelizations of C. From our description some major results on symbolic Rees algebras of perfect graphs and clutters will follow. As a byproduct, we give a method, using Hilbert bases, to compute all irreducible parallelizations of C along with all the corresponding vertex covering numbers.
We study Gorenstein ideals of codimension $4$ derived from generic doublings of almost complete intersection perfect ideals of codimension $3$. We also investigate spinor coordinates of such Gorenstein ideals with $8$ and $9$ generators. For an ideal $J$ of commutative ring $R$, the $R/J$ module $J/J^2$ is called conormal module and $R/J$-dual of $J/J^2$ is called normal module. We study properties of conormal and normal modules of almost complete intersection perfect ideals of codimension $3$.
We propose a concept of module liaison that extends Gorenstein liaison of ideals and provides an equivalence relation among unmixed modules over a commutative Gorenstein ring. Analyzing the resulting equivalence classes we show that several results known for Gorenstein liaison are still true in the more general case of module liaison. In particular, we construct two maps from the set of even liaison classes of modules of fixed codimension into stable equivalence classes of certain reflexive modules. As a consequence, we show that the intermediate cohomology modules and properties like being pe…
A Gorenstein A-algebra R of codimension 2 is a perfect finite A-algebra such that R=Ext^2(R,A) holds as R-modules, A being a Cohen-Macaulay local ring with dim(A)-dim_A(R)=2. I prove a structure theorem for these algebras improving on an old theorem of M. Grassi. Special attention is paid to the question how the ring structure of R is encoded in its Hilbert resolution. It is shown that R is automatically a ring once one imposes a weak depth condition on a determinantal ideal derived from a presentation matrix of R over A. The interplay of Gorenstein algebras and Koszul modules as introduced by…
We introduce an efficient way, called Newton algorithm, to study arbitrary ideals in C[[x,y]], using a finite succession of Newton polygons. We codify most of the data of the algorithm in a useful combinatorial object, the Newton tree. For instance when the ideal is of finite codimension, invariants like integral closure and Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity were already combinatorially determined in the very special cases of monomial or non degenerate ideals, using the Newton polygon of the ideal. With our approach, we can generalize these results to arbitrary ideals. In particular the Rees valuati…
Our purpose is to study the cohomological properties of the Rees algebras of a class of ideals generated by quadrics. For all such ideals $I\subset R = K[x,y,z]$ we give the precise value of depth $R[It]$ and decide whether the corresponding rational maps are birational. In the case of dimension $d \geq 3$, when $K=\mathbb{R}$, we give structure theorems for all ideals of codimension $d$ minimally generated by ${{d+1}\choose{2}}-1$ quadrics. For arbitrary fields $K$, we prove a polarized version.
In 2018 Celikbas, Laxmi, Kraśkiewicz, and Weyman exhibited an interesting family of perfect ideals of codimension three, with five generators, of Cohen-Macaulay type two with trivial multiplication on the Tor algebra. All previously known perfect ideals of codimension three, with five generators, of Cohen-Macaulay type two had been found by Brown in 1987. Brown's ideals all have non-trivial multiplication on the Tor algebra. We prove that all of the ideals of Brown are obtained from the ideals of Celikbas, Laxmi, Kraśkiewicz, and Weyman by (non-homogeneous) specialization. We also prove that b…
Consider the rational map $ϕ: \mathbb{P}^{n-1}_{\mathbf k} \stackrel{[f_0:\cdots: f_n]}{\longrightarrow} \mathbb{P}^{n}_{\mathbf k}$ defined by homogeneous polynomials $f_0,\dots,f_n$ of the same degree $d$ in a polynomial ring $R=\mathbf k [x_1,\dots,x_n]$ over a field $\mathbf k$. Suppose $I=(f_0,\dots,f_n)$ is a height two perfect ideal satisfying $μ(I_p)\leq\dim R_p$ for $p\in \operatorname{Spec} (R) \setminus V(x_1,\dots, x_n)$. We study the equations defining the graph of $ϕ$ whose coordinate ring is the Rees algebra $R[It]$. We provide new methods to construct these equations using work…
Inspired by recent work in the theory of central projections onto hypersurfaces, we characterize self-linked perfect ideals of grade 2 as those with a Hilbert--Burch matrix that has a maximal symmetric subblock. We also prove that every Gorenstein perfect algebra of grade 1 can be presented, as a module, by a symmetric matrix. Both results are derived from the same elementary lemma about symmetrizing a matrix that has, modulo a nonzerodivisor, a symmetric syzygy matrix. In addition, we establish a correspondence, roughly speaking, between Gorenstein perfect algebras of grade 1 that are biratio…
In this paper, we introduce and study the notion of linkage by perfect modules, which we call perfect linkage, for Cohen-Macaulay modules over Cohen--Macaulay local rings. We explore perfect linkage in connection with syzygies, maximal Cohen-Macaulay approximations and Yoshino-Isogawa linkage. We recover a theorem of Yoshino and Isogawa, and analyze the structure of double perfect linkage. Moreover, we establish a criterion for two Cohen-Macaulay modules of codimension one to be perfectly linked, and apply it to the classical linkage theory for ideals. We also construct various examples of lin…
While every grade 2 perfect ideal in a regular local ring is linked to a complete intersection ideal, it is known not to be the case for ideals of grade 3. We soften the blow by proving that every grade 3 perfect ideal in a regular local ring is linked to a complete intersection or a Golod ideal. Our proof is indebted to a homological classification of Cohen-Macaulay local rings of codimension 3. That debt is swiftly repaid, as we use linkage to reveal some of the finer structures of this classification.
Let $(S, \mathfrak n) $ be a regular local ring and let $I \subseteq \mathfrak n^2 $ be a perfect ideal of $S. $ Sharp upper bounds on the minimal number of generators of $I$ are known in terms of the Hilbert function of $R=S/I. $ Starting from information on the ideal $I, $ for instance the minimal number of generators, a difficult task is to find good bounds on the minimal number of generators of the leading ideal $I^* $, which defines the tangent cone of $R$ or to give information on its graded structure. Motivated by papers of S.C. Kothari, S. Goto ${\it{et al.}}$ concerning the leading id…
Let $(A,\mathfrak{m})$ be an excellent normal domain of dimension two containing a field $k \cong A/\mathfrak{m}$. An $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal $I$ to be a $p_g$-ideal if the Rees algebra $A[It]$ is a Cohen-Macaulay normal domain. If $k$ is algebraically closed then Okuma, Watanabe and Yoshida proved that $A$ has $p_g$-ideals and furthermore product of two $p_g$-ideals is a $p_g$ ideal. In a previous paper we showed that if $k$ has characteristic zero then $A$ has $p_g$-ideals. In this paper we prove that if $k$ is perfect field of positive characteristic then also $A$ has $p_g$ ideals.
