In 2018 Celikbas, Laxmi, Kraśkiewicz, and Weyman exhibited an interesting family of perfect ideals of codimension three, with five generators, of Cohen-Macaulay type two with trivial multiplication on the Tor algebra. All previously known perfect ideals of codimension three, with five generators, of Cohen-Macaulay type two had been found by Brown in 1987. Brown's ideals all have non-trivial multiplication on the Tor algebra. We prove that all of the ideals of Brown are obtained from the ideals of Celikbas, Laxmi, Kraśkiewicz, and Weyman by (non-homogeneous) specialization. We also prove that both families of ideals, when built using power series variables over a field, define rigid algebras in the sense of Lichtenbaum and Schlessinger.
This paper aims to provide several relations between Bass and Betti numbers of a given module and its deficiency modules. Such relations and the tools used throughout allow us to generalize some results of Foxby, characterize Cohen-Macaulay modules in equidimensionality terms and furnish a case for the Auslander-Reiten conjecture.
In this article, we discuss the rationality of the Betti Series of the universal module of nth order derivations of R_{m} where m is a maximal ideal of R. We proved that if R is a coordinate ring of an affine irreducible curve and if it has at most one singularity point, then the Betti series is rational.
Let K be a field and S a polynomial ring in a finite number of variables over K. Let F be a finitely generated graded free S-module. We examine some classes of squarefree monomial submodules of F. Hence, we focalize our attention on the Betti table of such classes in order to analyze the behavior of their extremal Betti numbers.
This paper gives a sharp upper bound for the Betti numbers of a finitely generated multigraded $R$-module, where $R=\Bbbk [x_{1},...,x_{m}]$ is the polynomial ring over a field $\Bbbk$ in $m$ variables. The bound is given in terms of the rank and the first two Betti numbers of the module. An example is given which achieves these bounds simultaneously in each homological degree. Using Alexander duality, a bound is established for the total multigraded Bass numbers of a finite multigraded module in terms of the first two total multigraded Bass numbers.
We study $h$-vectors and graded Betti numbers of level modules up to multiplication by a rational number. Assuming a conjecture on the possible graded Betti numbers of Cohen-Macaulay modules we get a description of the possible $h$-vectors of level modules up to multiplication by a rational number. We also determine, again up to multiplication by a rational number, the cancellable $h$-vectors and the $h$-vectors of level modules with the weak Lefschetz property. Furthermore, we prove that level modules of codimension three satisfy the upper bound of the Multiplicity conjecture of Herzog, Hunek…
We give conjectures on the possible graded Betti numbers of Cohen-Macaulay modules up to multiplication by positive rational numbers. The idea is that the Betti diagrams should be non-negative linear combinations of pure diagrams. The conjectures are verified in the cases where the structure of resolutions are known, i.e., for modules of codimension two, for Gorenstein algebras of codimension three and for complete intersections. The motivation for the conjectures comes from the Multiplicity conjecture of Herzog, Huneke and Srinivasan.
We study the linear space generated by the multigraded Betti diagrams of Z^n-graded artinian modules of codimension n whose resolutions become pure of a given type when taking total degrees. We show that the multigraded Betti diagram of the equivariant resolution constructed by D.Eisenbud, J.Weyman, and the author, and all its twists, form a basis for this linear space.
Holm studied modules of higher order differential operators (generalising derivations) on generic (central) hyperplane arrangements. We use his results to determine the Hilbert series of these modules. We also give a conjecture about the Poincar{é}-Betti series; these are known for the module of derivations through the work of Yuzvinsky and of Rose and Terao.
The Buchsbaum-Eisenbud-Horrocks Conjecture predicts that if M is a non-zero module of finite length and finite projective dimension over a local ring R of dimension d, then the i-th Betti number of M is at least d choose i. This conjecture implies that the sum of all the Betti numbers of such a module must be at least 2^d. We prove the latter holds in a large number of cases.
We study the growth of the Betti sequence of the canonical module of a Cohen-Macaulay local ring. It is an open question whether this sequence grows exponentially whenever the ring is not Gorenstein. We answer the question of exponential growth affirmatively for a large class of rings, and prove that the growth is in general not extremal. As an application of growth, we give criteria for a Cohen-Macaulay ring possessing a canonical module to be Gorenstein.
We describe the positive cone generated by bigraded Betti diagrams of artinian modules of codimension two, whose resolutions become pure of a given type when taking total degrees. If the differences of these total degrees, p and q, are relatively prime, the extremal rays are parametrised by order ideals in N^2 contained in the region px + qy < (p-1)(q-1). We also consider some examples concerning artinian modules of codimension three.
Let S=K[X_1,...,X_n] be the polynomial ring over a field K. For bounded below Z^n-graded S-modules M and N we show that if Tor^S_p(M,N) is nonzero, then for every i between 0 and p, the dimension of the K-vector space Tor^S_i(M,N) is at least as big as the binomial coefficient (p,i). In particular, we get lower bounds for the total Betti numbers. These results are related to a conjecture of Buchsbaum and Eisenbud.
Let K be a field of characteristic 0 and consider exterior algebras of finite dimensional K-vector spaces. In this short paper we exhibit principal quadric ideals in a family whose Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity is unbounded. This negatively answers the analogue of Stillman's Question for exterior algebras posed by I. Peeva. We show that these examples are dual to modules over polynomial rings that yield counterexamples to a conjecture of J. Herzog on the Betti numbers in the linear strand of syzygy modules.
Let $R=\Bbbk[x_1,...,x_m]$ be the polynomial ring over a field $\Bbbk$ with the standard $\mathbb Z^m$-grading (multigrading), let $L$ be a Noetherian multigraded $R$-module, let $β_{i,α}(L)$ the $i$th (multigraded) Betti number of $L$ of multidegree $\a$. We introduce the notion of a generic (relative to $L$) multidegree, and the notion of multigraded module of generic type. When the multidegree $\a$ is generic (relative to $L$) we provide a Hochster-type formula for $β_{i,α}(L)$ as the dimension of the reduced homology of a certain simplicial complex associated with $L$. This allows us to sh…
We describe the cone of Betti tables of all finitely generated graded modules over the homogeneous coordinate ring of three non-collinear points in the projective plane. We also describe the cone of Betti tables of all finite length modules.
In this paper we prove parts of a conjecture of Herzog giving lower bounds on the rank of the free modules appearing in the linear strand of a graded $k$-th syzygy module over the polynomial ring. If in addition the module is $\mathbb{Z}^n$-graded we show that the conjecture holds in full generality. Furthermore, we give lower and upper bounds for the graded Betti numbers of graded ideals with a linear resolution and a fixed number of generators.
Let $Q\in \K[x_1,...,x_n] = S$ be a homogeneous polynomial of degree $d$. The freeness of the logarithmic derivation module, $D(Q)$, and of its natural generalizations, has been widely studied. In the free case, $D(Q) \simeq \bigoplus_{i=1}^n S(-d_i)$ where the $d_i$'s are the exponents of the module; and as a direct consequence of the Saito-Ziegler criterion, the formula $d = \sum_i d_i$ holds. In this paper we give a generalization of this formula in the non-free case. Moreover, we show that an equivalent formula is also true in the quasi-homogeneous case, and show to what extent it can be g…
Let $S$ be a polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$ of characteristic $0$. A numerical characterization of all possible extremal Betti numbers of any graded submodule of a finitely generated graded free $S$-module is given.
We use the results by Eisenbud and Schreyer to prove that any Betti diagram of a graded module over a standard graded polynomial ring is a positive linear combination Betti diagrams of modules with a pure resolution. This implies the Multiplicity Conjecture of Herzog, Huneke and Srinivasan for modules that are not necessarily Cohen-Macaulay. We give a combinatorial proof of the convexity of the simplicial fan spanned by the pure diagrams.
For an ideal $I$ of a Noetherian local ring $(R,\fm,k)$ we show that $\bt_1^R(I)-\bt_0^R(I)\geq -1$. It is demonstrated that some residual intersections of an ideal $I$ for which $\bt_1^R(I)-\bt_0^R(I)= -1\;\text{or}\;0$ are perfect. Some relations between Betti numbers and Bass numbers of the canonical module are studied.
We introduce the notion of Betti category for graded modules over suitably graded polynomial rings, and more generally for modules over certain small categories. Our categorical approach allows us to treat simultaneously many important cases, such as monomial ideals and toric rings. We prove that in these cases the Betti category is a finite combinatorial object that completely determines the structure of the minimal free resolution. For monomial ideals, the Betti category is the same as the Betti poset that we studied in a previous article. We describe in detail and with examples how the theo…
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m},K)$ be a local ring, and let $M$ be an $R$-module of finite length. We study asymptotic invariants, $β^F_i(M,R),$ defined by twisting with Frobenius the free resolution of $M$. This family of invariants includes the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity ($e_{HK}(\mathfrak{m},R)=β^F_0(K,R)$). We discuss several properties of these numbers that resemble the behavior of the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity. Furthermore, we study when the vanishing of $β^F_i(M,R)$ implies that $M$ has finite projective dimension. In particular, we give a complete characterization of the vanishing of $β^F_i(M,R)$…
Let $(R,\mathfrak m)$ be a local (Noetherian) ring of dimension $d$ and $M$ a finite length $R$-module with free resolution $G_\bullet$. De Stefani, Huneke, and Núñez-Betancourt explored two questions about the properties of resolutions of $M$. First, in characteristic $p>0$, what vanishing conditions on the Frobenius Betti numbers, $β_i^F(M, R) : = \lim_{e \to \infty} λ(H_i(F^e(G_\bullet)))/p^{ed}$, force pd$_R M < \infty$. Second, if pd$_R M = \infty $, does this force $d+2$nd or higher syzygies of $M$ to have infinite length. For the first question, they showed, under rather restrictive hyp…
In this short note we introduce a notion of extremality for Betti numbers of a minimal free resolution, which can be seen as a refinement of the notion of Mumford-Castelnuovo regularity. We show that extremal Betti numbers of an arbitrary submodule of a free S-module are preserved when taking the generic initial module. We relate extremal multigraded Betti numbers in the minimal resolution of a square free monomial ideal with those of the monomial ideal corresponding to the Alexander dual simplicial complex and generalize theorems of Eagon-Reiner and Terai. As an application we give easy (alte…
Mats Boij and Jonas Soederberg (math.AC/0611081) have conjectured that the Betti table of a Cohen-Macaulay module over a polynomial ring can be decomposed in a certain way as a positive linear combination of Betti tables of modules with pure resolutions. We prove, over any field, a strengthened form of their conjecture. Applications include a proof of the Multiplicity Conjecture of Huneke and Srinivasan and a proof of the convexity of a fan naturally associated to the Young lattice. We also characterize the rational cone of all cohomology tables of vector bundles on projective spaces in terms …
We show that for maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over a homogeneous coordinate rings of smooth Calabi-Yau varieties $X$ computation of Betti numbers can be reduced to computations of dimensions of certain $\operatorname{Hom}$ groups in the bounded derived category $D^b(X)$. In the simplest case of a smooth elliptic curve $E$ imbedded into $\mathbb{P}^2$ as a smooth cubic we use our formula to get explicit answers for Betti numbers. Description of the automorphism group of the derived category $D^b(E)$ in terms of the spherical twist functors of Seidel and Thomas plays a major role in our approa…
Suppose that $M$ is a finitely-generated graded module of codimension $c\geq 3$ over a polynomial ring and that the regularity of $M$ is at most $2a-2$ where $a\geq 2$ is the minimal degree of a first syzygy of $M$. Then we show that the sum of the betti numbers of $M$ is at least $β_0(M)(2^c + 2^{c-1})$. In addition, if $c \geq 9$ then for each $1\leq i\leq \lceil c/2\rceil$, we show $β_i(M)\geq 2β_0(M){c \choose i}$.
Boij-Söderberg Theory views the Betti diagrams of graded modules over polynomial rings as vectors in a rational vector space, and studies the cone that these vectors generate (called a 'Betti Cone'). The objects of study in this paper are the Betti cones generated by edge ideals; in particular this paper will present and prove a formula for the dimensions of these cones, and for the subcones generated by edge ideals of specific heights.
We define Tate-Betti and Tate-Bass invariants for modules over a commutative noetherian local ring R. Then we show the periodicity of these invariants provided that R is a hypersurface. In case R is also Gorenstein, we show that a finitely generated R-module M and its Matlis dual have the same Tate-Betti and Tate-Bass numbers.
We introduce to the context of multigraded modules the methods of modules over categories from algebraic topology and homotopy theory. We develop the basic theory quite generally, with a view toward future applications to a wide class of graded modules over graded rings. The main application in this paper is to study the Betti poset B=B(I,k) of a monomial ideal I in the polynomial ring R=k[x_1,...,x_m] over a field k, which consists of all degrees in Z^m of the homogeneous basis elements of the free modules in the minimal free Z^m-graded resolution of I over R. We show that the order simplicia…
The Boij-Söderberg characterization decomposes a Betti table into a unique positive integral linear combination of pure diagrams. Given a module with a pure resolution, we describe explicit formulae for computing the decomposition of the Betti table of the module given the decomposition of the truncation of the Betti table, and vice versa. Nagel and Sturgeon described the decomposition of Betti tables of ideals with $d$-linear resolutions; indeed, the coefficients are precisely finite $O$-sequences. Using the extension formulae, we provide an explicit description of the coefficients of the dec…
We apply Orlov's equivalence to derive formulas for the Betti numbers of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over the cone an elliptic curve $(E,x)$ embedded into $\mathbb{P}^{n-1}$, by the full linear system $|\mathcal{O}(nx)|$, for $n>3$. The answers are given in terms of recursive sequences. These results are applied to give a criterion of (Co-)Koszulity. In the last two sections of the paper we apply our methods to study the cases $n=1,2$. Geometrically these cases correspond to the embedding of an elliptic curve into a weighted projective space. The singularities of the corresponding cones are…
We extend the notion of Frobenius Betti numbers and F-splitting ratio to large classes of finitely generated modules over rings of prime characteristic, which are not assumed to be local. We also prove that the strong F-regularity of a pair $(R,\mathscr{D})$, where $\mathscr{D}$ is a Cartier algebra, is equivalent to the positivity of the global F-signature ${\rm s}(R,\mathscr{D})$ of the pair. This extends a result previously proved by these authors, by removing an extra assumption on the Cartier algebra.
We survey recent results on bounds for Betti numbers of modules over polynomial rings, with an emphasis on lower bounds. Along the way, we give a gentle introduction to free resolutions and Betti numbers, and discuss some of the reasons why one would study these.
Let $I$ be ideal of an $n$-dimensional local Gorenstein ring $R$. In this paper we will describe several necessary and sufficient conditions such that the ideal $I$ becomes cohomologically complete intersections. In fact, as a technical tool, it will be shown that the vanishing $H^i_{I}(R)= 0$ for all $i\neq c= \grade (I)$ is equivalent to the vanishing of the Betti numbers of $H^c_{I}(R)$. This gives a new characterization to check the cohomologically complete intersections property with the homological properties of the vanishing of Tor modules of $H^c_{I}(R)$.
It is proved that when R is a local ring of positive characteristic, $ϕ$ is its Frobenius endomorphism, and some non-zero finite R-module has finite flat dimension or finite injective dimension for the R-module structure induced through $ϕ$, then R is regular. This broad generalization of Kunz's characterization of regularity in positive characteristic is deduced from a theorem concerning a local ring R with residue field of k of arbitrary characteristic: If $ϕ$ is a contracting endomorphism of R, then the Betti numbers and the Bass numbers over $ϕ$ of any non-zero finitely generated R-module …
It is known that the numerical invariants Betti numbers and Bass numbers are worthwhile tools for decoding a large amount of information about modules over commutative rings. We highlight this fact, further, by establishing some criteria for certain semidualizing complexes via their Betti and Bass numbers. Two distinguished types of semidualizing complexes are the shifts of the underlying rings and dualizing complexes. Let $C$ be a semidualizing complex for an analytically irreducible local ring $R$ and set $n:=\sup C$ and $d:=\dim_RC$. We show that $C$ is quasi-isomorphic to a shift of $R$ if…
It gives a class of $p$-Borel principal ideals of a polynomial algebra over a field $K$ for which the graded Betti numbers do not depend on the characteristic of $K$ and the Koszul homology modules have monomial cyclic basis. Also it shows that all principal $p$-Borel ideals have binomial cycle basis on Koszul homology modules.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective Calabi-Yau variety and $L$ a Koszul line bundle on $X$. We show that for Betti numbers of a maximal Cohen-Macaulay module over the homogeneous coordinate ring $A$ of $X$ there are formulas similar to the formulas for cohomology number. This similarity is realized via the box-product resolution of the diagonal $Δ_X \subset X \times X$.
Let $G$ be a simple graph on $n$ vertices. Let $H$ be either the complete graph $K_m$ or the complete bipartite graph $K_{r,s}$ on a subset of the vertices in $G$. We show that $G$ contains $H$ as a subgraph if and only if $β_{i,α}(H) \le β_{i,α}(G)$ for all $i \ge 0$ and $α\in \mathbb{Z}^n$. In fact, it suffices to consider only the first syzygy module. In particular, we prove that $β_{1,α}(H) \le β_{1,α}(G)$ for all $α\in \mathbb{Z}^n$ if and only if $G$ contains a subgraph that is isomorphic to either $H$ or a multipartite graph $K_{2,\dots,2,a,b}$.
In this paper, we introduce and study the notion of linkage by perfect modules, which we call perfect linkage, for Cohen-Macaulay modules over Cohen--Macaulay local rings. We explore perfect linkage in connection with syzygies, maximal Cohen-Macaulay approximations and Yoshino-Isogawa linkage. We recover a theorem of Yoshino and Isogawa, and analyze the structure of double perfect linkage. Moreover, we establish a criterion for two Cohen-Macaulay modules of codimension one to be perfectly linked, and apply it to the classical linkage theory for ideals. We also construct various examples of lin…
The socle of a graded Buchsbaum module is studied and is related to its local cohomology modules. This algebraic result is then applied to face enumeration of Buchsbaum simplicial complexes and posets. In particular, new necessary conditions on face numbers and Betti numbers of such complexes and posets are established. These conditions are used to settle in the affirmative Kühnel's conjecture for the maximum value of the Euler characteristic of a $2k$-dimensional simplicial manifold on $n$ vertices as well as Kalai's conjecture providing a lower bound on the number of edges of a simplicial ma…
For an ideal I in a regular local ring (R,m)$ with residue class field K = R/m or a standard graded K-algebra R we show that for k >> 0 --> the Artin--Rees number of the syzygy modules of I^k as submodules of the free modules from a free resolution is constant, and thereby present the Artin-Rees number as a proper replacement of regularity in the local situation, --> the ring R/I^k is Golod, its Poincer{é}-Betti series is rational and the Betti numbers of the free resolution of K over R/I^k are polynomials in k of a specific degree. The first result is an extension of work of Kodiyalam and Cut…
Let $R$ be a Noetherian ring and let $C$ be a semidualizing $R$-module. In this paper, by using the classes $ \mathcal{P}_C $ and $ \mathcal{I}_C $, we extend the notions of perfect and coperfect modules introduced by D.Rees \cite{R} and O.Jenda \cite{J1}. First, we study the basic properties of these modules and relations between them. Next, we characterize local rings in terms of the existence of special perfect (resp. coperfect) modules.
