Rees cones and monomial rings of matroids

Using linear algebra methods we study certain algebraic properties of monomial rings and matroids. Let I be a monomial ideal in a polynomial ring over an arbitrary field. If the Rees cone of I is quasi-ideal, we express the normalization of the Rees algebra of I in terms of an Ehrhart ring. We introduce the basis Rees cone of a matroid (or a polymatroid) and study their facets. Some applications to Rees algebras are presented. It is shown that the basis monomial ideal of a matroid (or a polymatroid) is normal.

Symbolic Rees algebras, vertex covers and irreducible representations of Rees cones

Let G be a simple graph and let J be its ideal of vertex covers. We give a graph theoretical description of the irreducible b-vertex covers of G, i.e., we describe the minimal generators of the symbolic Rees algebra of J. Then we study the irreducible b-vertex covers of the blocker of G, i.e., we study the minimal generators of the symbolic Rees algebra of the edge ideal of G. Cohen-Macaulay fiber cones and defining ideal of Rees algebras of modules

Generic Bourbaki ideals were introduced by Simis, Ulrich and Vasconcelos to study the Cohen-Macaulay property of Rees algebras of modules. In this article we prove that the same technique can sometimes be used to investigate the Cohen-Macaulay property of fiber cones of modules and to study the defining ideal of Rees algebras. This is possible as long as the Rees algebra of a given module $E$ is a deformation of the Rees algebra of a generic Bourbaki ideal $I$ of $E$. Castelnuovo-Mumford Regularity of the Fiber Cone for good filtrations

In this paper we show that there is a close relationship between the invariants characterizing the homogeneous vanishing of the local cohomology of the Rees algebra and the associated graded ring for the good filtrations case. We obtain relationships between the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the fiber cone, associated graded ring, Rees algebra and reduction number for the good filtrations case.

A note on Rees algebras and the MFMC property

We study irreducible representations of Rees cones and characterize the max-flow min-cut property of clutters in terms of the normality of Rees algebras and the integrality of certain polyhedra. Then we present some applications to combinatorial optimization and commutative algebra. As a byproduct we obtain an "effective" method, based on the program "Normaliz", to determine whether a given clutter satisfies the max-flow min-cut property.
