A note on Rees algebras and the MFMC property

We study irreducible representations of Rees cones and characterize the max-flow min-cut property of clutters in terms of the normality of Rees algebras and the integrality of certain polyhedra. Then we present some applications to combinatorial optimization and commutative algebra. As a byproduct we obtain an "effective" method, based on the program "Normaliz", to determine whether a given clutter satisfies the max-flow min-cut property. Tame graphs, clutters and their Rees algebras

A tame ideal is an ideal $I$ such that the blowup of the affine space $\mathbb{A}_k^n$ along $I$ is regular. In this paper, we give a combinatorial characterization of tame squarefree monomial ideals. More precisely, we show that a square free monomial ideal is tame if and only if the corresponding clutter is a union of some isolated vertices and a complete $d$-partite $d$-uniform clutter. Rees algebras, Monomial Subrings and Linear Optimization Problems

In this thesis we are interested in studying algebraic properties of monomial algebras, that can be linked to combinatorial structures, such as graphs and clutters, and to optimization problems. A goal here is to establish bridges between commutative algebra, combinatorics and optimization. Regularity and Gröbner bases of the Rees algebra of edge ideals of bipartite graphs

Let $G$ be a bipartite graph and $I=I(G)$ be its edge ideal. The aim of this note is to investigate different aspects of the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(I)$ of $I$. We compute its regularity and the universal Gröbner basis of its defining equations; interestingly, both of them are described in terms of the combinatorics of $G$. We apply these ideas to study the regularity of the powers of $I$. For any $s \ge \text{match}(G)+\lvert E(G) \rvert +1$ we prove that $\text{reg}(I^{s+1})=\text{reg}(I^s)+2$.

Systems with the integer rounding property in normal monomial subrings

Let C be a clutter and let A be its incidence matrix. If the linear system x>=0;xA<=1 has the integer rounding property, we give a description of the canonical module and the a-invariant of certain normal subrings associated to C. If the clutter is a connected graph, we describe when the aforementioned linear system has the integer rounding property in combinatorial and algebraic terms using graph theory and the theory of Rees algebras. As a consequence we show that the extended Rees algebra of the edge ideal of a bipartite graph is Gorenstein if and only if the graph is unmixed.
