For a paramodular group of any degree and square free level we study the Hecke algebra and the boundary components. We define paramodular theta series and show that for square free level and large enough weight they generate the space of cusp forms (basis problem), using the doubling and pullback of Eisenstein series method. For this we give a new geometric proof of Garrett's double coset decomposition which works in our more general situation.
The theta-block conjecture proposed by Gritsenko--Poor--Yuen in 2013 characterizes Siegel paramodular forms which are simultaneously Borcherds products and additive Jacobi lifts. In this paper, we prove this conjecture for two new infinite series of theta blocks of weights 2 and 3. The proof is based on Scheithauer's classification of reflective modular forms of singular weight.
In this paper we construct an infinite family of paramodular forms of weight $2$ which are simultaneously Borcherds products and additive Jacobi lifts. This proves an important part of the theta-block conjecture of Gritsenko--Poor--Yuen (2013) related to the only known infinite series of theta-blocks of weight $2$ and $q$-order $1$. We also consider some applications of this result.
The problem on the construction of antisymmetric paramodular forms of canonical weight 3 was open since 1998. Any cusp form of this type determines a canonical differential form on any smooth compactification of the moduli space of Kummer surfaces associated to $(1,t)$-polarised abelian surfaces. In this paper, we construct the first infinite family of antisymmetric paramodular forms of weight 3 as Borcherds products whose first Fourier-Jacobi coefficient is a theta block.
In this paper we describe a characterization for the Maass space associated with the paramodular group of degree $2$ and squarefree level $N$. As an application we show that the Maass space is invariant under all Hecke operators. As a consequence we conclude that the associated Siegel-Eisenstein series belongs to the Maass space.
We obtain pullback formulas for Klingen Eisenstein series with arbitrary levels, with respect to both Siegel congruence and paramodular subgroups, in degree two. Pullback results are used, along with the Fourier series expansion of Klingen Eisenstein series given by Mizumoto, to prove certain identities involving critical values of $ L$-functions attached to normalized elliptic modular forms of weight $ k $ and full level.
Given a Siegel theta series and a prime p not dividing the level of the theta series, we apply to the theta series the n+1 Hecke operators that generate the local Hecke algebra at p. We show that the average theta series is an eigenform and we compute the eigenvalues.
Following the paper "Note on theta series for Niemeier lattices", we study some congruence properties satisfied by the theta series associated with Niemeier lattices.
We consider the action of Hecke-type operators on Hilbert-Siegel theta series attached to lattices of even rank. We show that average Hilbert-Siegel theta series are eigenforms for these operators, and we explicitly compute the eigenvalues.
We introduce three-variable analogues of the theta series of Borwein and Borwein. We prove various identities involving these theta series including a generalization of the cubic identity of Borwein and Borwein.
We derive explicit formulas for the action of the Hecke operator $T(p)$ on the genus theta series of a positive definite integral quadratic form and prove a theorem on the generation of spaces of Eisenstein series by genus theta series. We also discuss connections of our results with Kudla's matching principle for theta integrals.
This article focuses on the theta series on the 6-fold cover of GL$_2$. We investigate the Fourier coefficients $τ(r)$ of the theta series, and give partially proven, partially conjectured values for $τ(π)^2$, $τ(π^2)$ and $τ(π^4)$ for prime values $π$.
We construct almost holomorphic and holomorphic modular forms by considering theta series for quadratic forms of signature $(n-1,1)$. We include homogeneous and spherical polynomials in the definition of the theta series (generalizing a construction of the second author) to obtain holomorphic, almost holomorphic and modular theta series. We give a criterion for these series to coincide, enabling us to construct almost holomorphic and holomorphic cusp forms on congruence subgroups of the modular group. Further, we provide numerous explicit examples.
We study the theta map which assigns to a real quadratic form its theta series. We introduce two invariants reflecting whether the differential of the theta map vanishes or is degenerate. We provide examples of lattices where this differential is zero. These invariants turn out to be modular forms for integral lattices. We illustrate this in the rank two case.
We find nice representatives for the 0-dimensional cusps of the degree $n$ Siegel upper half-space under the action of $Γ_0(\stufe)$. To each of these we attach a Siegel Eisenstein series, and then we make explicit a result of Siegel, realizing any integral weight average Siegel theta series of arbitrary level $\stufe$ and Dirichlet character $χ_L$ modulo $\stufe$ as a linear combination of Siegel Eisenstein series.
In this short paper, we find the transformation formula for the theta series under the action of the Jacobi modular group on the Siegel-Jacobi space. This formula generalizes the formula (5.1) obtained by Mumford in his book[p.189, Tata Lectures on Theta I (1983), Birkhauser].
Siegel modular forms in the space of the mod $p$ kernel of the theta operator are constructed by the Eisenstein series in some odd-degree cases. Additionally, a similar result in the case of Hermitian modular forms is given.
We investigate Siegel theta series for quadratic forms of signature $(m-1,1)$. On the one hand, we construct a holomorphic series that does not transform like a modular form. On the other hand, we construct a non-holomorphic series that transforms like a Siegel modular form of weight $m/2$. Moreover, the holomorphic series describes almost everywhere the holomorphic part of the modular series.
The space spanned by theta series of adjoints of maximal even lattices of exact level $N$ and determinant $N^2$ has the Weierstrass property and hence allows to define extremality for arbitrary squarefree level $N$. We find examples of such dual extremal lattices.
When the discriminants $Δ$ and $Δp^2$ are idoneal, Patane proved a theorem which connects the theta series associated to binary quadratic forms of each discriminant. This paper generalizes the main theorem of Patane by no longer requiring $Δ$ and $Δp^2$ to be idoneal. In particular, we state and prove an identity which connects the theta series associated to a single binary quadratic form of discriminant $Δ$ to a theta series associated to a subset of binary quadratic forms of discriminant $Δp^2$. Here and everywhere $p$ is a prime.
We describe the construction of vector valued modular forms transforming under a given congruence representation of the modular group SL$(\bold Z)$ in terms of theta series. We apply this general setup to obtain closed and easily computable formulas for conformal characters of rational models of $W$-algebras.
For a prime $p$ larger than $7$, the Eisenstein series of weight $p-1$ has some remarkable congruence properties modulo $p$. Those imply, for example, that the $j$-invariants of its zeros (which are known to be real algebraic numbers in the interval $[0,1728]$), are at most quadratic over the field with $p$ elements and are congruent modulo $p$ to the zeros of a certain truncated hypergeometric series. In this paper we introduce "theta modular forms" of weight $k \geq 4$ for the full modular group as the modular forms for which the first dim$(M_k)$ Fourier coefficients are identical to certain…
We study unilateral series in a single variable $q$ where its exponent is an unbounded increasing function, and the coefficients are periodic. Such series converge inside the unit disk. Quadratic polynomials in the exponent correspond to partial theta series. We compute limits of those series as the variable tends radially to a root of unity. The proofs use ideas from the $q$-integral and are elementary.
We state and prove an identity which connects theta series associated with binary quadratic forms of idoneal discriminants $Δ$ and $Δp^2$, for $p$ a prime. Employing this identity, we extend the results of Toh by writing the theta series of forms of discriminant $Δp^2$ as a linear combination of Lambert series. We then use these Lambert series decompositions to give explicit representation formulas for the forms of discriminant $Δp^2$. Lastly, we give a generalization of our main identity, which employs a map of Buell to connect forms of discriminant $Δ$ to $Δp^2$. Our generalized identity lin…
The modular transformation behavior of theta series for indefinite quadratic forms is well understood in the case of elliptic modular forms due to Vignéras, who deduced that solving a differential equation of second order serves as a criterion for modularity. In this paper, we will give a generalization of this result to Siegel theta series.
We generalize the construction from arXiv:2102.09329 of theta series for quadratic forms of signature $(n-1,1)$ with homogeneous and spherical polynomials. Namely, we allow that the parameters $c_1,c_2$, which define the theta series and ensure the convergence of the defining series, are located on the boundary of the cone $C_Q$. This enables us to study several interesting examples such as Eisenstein series, modular forms on $Γ_0(4)$ which appear during the investigation of quadratic polynomials of a fixed discriminant, and a mock theta function of order 2 that is connected to the generating …
We prove an algebraic property of the elements defining Hecke operators on period polynomials associated with modular forms, which implies that the pairing on period polynomials corresponding to the Petersson scalar product of modular forms is Hecke equivariant. As a consequence of this proof, we derive two indefinite theta series identities which can be seen as analogues of Jacobi's formula for the theta series associated with the sum of four squares.
In this paper we use automorph class theory formalism to construct a lifting of similitudes of quadratic Z-modules of arbitrary ternary nondegenerate quadratic forms to morphisms between certain subrings of associated Clifford algebras. The construction explains and generalizes Shimura's correspondence in the case of theta-series of positive-definite quadratic forms. Relations between associated zeta-functions are considered.
We show that indefinite theta series on cones converge and provide an explicit modular completion. Our completion rests on a convolution of the Gaussian with a piecewise constant function supported on the cone. Our main innovation is to formulate this convolution in terms of euclidean geometry as opposed to hyperbolic geometry. This change of perspective allows us to establish essential asymptotic estimates without further difficulty.
A cubic (resp. biquadratic) theta series is a power series whose n-th coefficient is equal to 1 if n is a perfect cube (resp. fourth power) and zero otherwise. We improve on a result of Bradshaw by showing that such series is not a cubic (resp. biquadratic) algebraic number when evaluated at reciprocals of integers. The proof relies on a "nested gaps technique" for linear independence and on recent results by the author on Waring's problem for cubes and biquadrates.
We prove some Lambert series which were stated by Gosper without proof or reference. As an application, we shall evaluate integrals involving Ramanujan theta function $ψ(q)$. Furthermore, motivated by Ramanujan's identities for $qψ^4(q^2)$ and $\fr{ψ^3(q)}{ψ(q^3)}$, we shall evaluate the squares of $qψ^4(q^2)$ and $\fr{ψ^3(q)}{ψ(q^3)}$ in terms of Lambert series.
The bilateral series corresponding to many of the third-, fifth-, sixth- and eighth order mock theta functions may be derived as special cases of $_2ψ_2$ series \[ \sum_{n=-\infty}^{\infty}\frac{(a,c;q)_n}{(b,d;q)_n}z^n. \] Three transformation formulae for this series due to Bailey are used to derive various transformation and summation formulae for both these mock theta functions and the corresponding bilateral series. \\ New and existing summation formulae for these bilateral series are also used to make explicit in a number of cases the fact that for a mock theta function, say $χ(q)$, and …
It is proved that the theta series of an even lattice whose level is a power of a prime $\ell$ is congruent modulo $\ell$ to an elliptic modular form of level~1. The proof uses arithmetic and algebraic properties of lattices rather than methods from the theory of modular forms. The methods presented here may therefore be especially pleasing to those working in the theory of quadratic forms, and they admit generalizations to more general types of theta series as they occur e.g. in the theory of Siegel or Hilbert modular forms.
We consider the Kudla-Millson theta series associated to a quadratic space of signature $(N,N)$. By combining a `see-saw' argument with the Siegel-Weil formula, we show that its (regularized) integral along a torus attached to a totally real field of degree $N$ is the diagonal restriction of an Eisenstein series. It allows us to express the Fourier coefficients of the diagonal restriction as intersection numbers, which generalizes a result of Darmon-Pozzi-Vonk to totally real fields.
In this article, we define functions analogous to Ramanujan's function $f(n)$ defined in his famous paper "Modular equations and approximations to $π$". We then use these new functions to study Ramanujan's series for $1/π$ associated with the classical, cubic and quartic bases.
We study Taylor expansions of Jacobi forms of lattice index. As the main result, we give an embedding from certain space of such forms, whether scalar-valued or vector-valued, integral-weight or half-integral-weight, of any level, with any character, into a product of finitely many spaces of modular forms. As an application, we investigate linear relations among Jacobi theta series of lattice index. Many linear relations among the second powers of such theta series associated with the $D_4$ lattice and $A_3$ lattice are obtained, along with relations among the third powers of series associated…
We prove uniform bounds for the Petersson norm of the cuspidal part of the theta series. This gives an improved asymptotic formula for the number of representations by a quadratic form. As an application, we show that every integer $n \neq 0,4,7 \,(\operatorname{mod}8)$ is represented as $n= x_1^2 + x_2^2 + x_3^3$ for integers $x_1,x_2,x_3$ such that the product $x_1x_2x_3$ has at most 72 prime divisors.
Suppose l=2m+1, m>0. We introduce m "theta-series", [1],...,[m], in Z/2[[x]]. It has been conjectured that the n for which the coefficient of x^n in 1/[i] is 1 form a set of density 0. This is probably always false, but in certain cases, for n restricted to certain arithmetic progressions, it is true. We prove such zero-density results using the theory of modular forms, and speculate about what may be true in general.
For abelian varieties $A$, in the most interesting cohomology theories $H^* (A)$ is the exterior algebra of $H^1(A)$. In this paper we study a weak generalization of this in the case of arithmetic manifolds associated to orthogonal or unitary groups. In this latter case recall that arithmetic manifolds associated to standard unitary groups $U(p,q)$ ($p\geq q$) over a totally real numberfield have vanishing cohomology in degree $i=1, ..., q-1$ and that, following earlier works of Kazhdan and Shimura, Borel and Wallach constructed in \cite{BorelWallach} non zero degree $q$ cohomology classes. Th…
In a recent preprint, arXiv:1606.05495v1, Alexandrov, Banerjee, Manschot and Pioline introduced generalized error functions and used them to construct indefinite theta series associated to quadratic lattices L of signature (n-2,2). These series are generalizations of those constructed by Zwegers for lattices of signature (n-1,1) and are shown to be `modular completions' of certain nice $q$-series. In this paper, we show that the ABMP-indefinite theta series for signature (n-2,2) can also be obtained as integrals of the form valued theta series introduced in joint work with J. Millson in 1986. …
Let $Γ_n(\mathcal{\scriptstyle{O}}_{\mathbb{K}})$ denote the Hermitian modular group of degree $n$ over an imaginary quadratic number field $\mathbb{K}$ and $Δ_{n,\mathbb{K}}^*$ its maximal discrete extension in the special unitary group $SU(n,n;\mathbb{C})$. In this paper we study the action of $Δ_{n,\mathbb{K}}^*$ on Hermitian theta series and Maass spaces. For $n=2$ we will find theta lattices such that the corresponding theta series are modular forms with respect to $Δ_{2,\mathbb{K}}^*$ as well as examples where this is not the case. Our second focus lies on studying two different Maass sp…
In this paper, we explicitly construct mock modular forms whose shadows are Eisenstein series of arbitrary integral and half-integral weight, level and character at the cusps $\infty$ and $0$. As an application, we give explicit construction of harmonic weak Maass forms which are Hecke eigenforms and are the preimages of $Θ^k, k \in \{ 3, 5, 7\}$ under the shadow operator, where $Θ$ is the classical Jacobi theta function.
We consider a generalization of Jacobi theta series and show that every such function is a quasi-Jacobi form. Under certain conditions we establish transformation laws for these functions with respect to the Jacobi group and prove such functions are Jacobi forms. In establishing these results we construct other functions which are also Jacobi forms. These results are motivated by applications in the theory of vertex operator algebras.
We derive a precise relation of poles of Eisenstein series associated to the cuspidal datum $χ\otimesσ$ and the lowest occurrence of theta lifts of a cuspidal automorphic representation $σ$ of a unitary group, where $χ$ is a conjugate self-dual character. A key ingredient of the proof is the computation of period integrals of truncated Eisenstein series.
It is known that average Siegel theta series lie in the space of Siegel Eisenstein series. Also, every lattice equipped with an even integral quadratic form lies in a maximal lattice. Here we consider average Siegel theta series of degree 2 attached to maximal lattices; we construct maps for which the average theta series is an eigenform. We evaluate the action of these maps on Siegel Eisenstein series of degree 2 (without knowing their Fourier coefficients), and then realise the average theta series as an explicit linear combination of the Eisenstein series.
The idea of the metaplectic theta function was introduced by Tomio Kubota in the 1960s. These theta functions are constructed as residues of Eisenstein series and are only known completely in the case of double covers and, up to the ambiguity of a constant, for triple covers. In 1992 Jeff Hoffstein published formulae by which these can be computed in certain cases over a rational function field. The author gave an alternative approach in 2007. Both of these methods give the coefficients in a closed form. The rational function field is unusual in that it has a large automorphism group. In this …
