In this paper, we explicitly construct mock modular forms whose shadows are Eisenstein series of arbitrary integral and half-integral weight, level and character at the cusps $\infty$ and $0$. As an application, we give explicit construction of harmonic weak Maass forms which are Hecke eigenforms and are the preimages of $Θ^k, k \in \{ 3, 5, 7\}$ under the shadow operator, where $Θ$ is the classical Jacobi theta function.
The aim of this paper is to generalize the Maass relation for generalized Cohen-Eisenstein series of degree two and of degree three. Here the generalized Cohen-Eisenstein series are certain Siegel modular forms of half-integral weight, and generalized Maass relations are certain relations among Fourier-Jacobi coefficients of them.
We construct theta liftings from half-integral weight weak Maass forms to even integral weight weak Maass forms by using regularized theta integral. Moreover it gives an extension of Niwa's theta liftings on harmonic weak Maass forms. And we obtain the similar results to those by Niwa.
The first two authors and Kohnen have recently introduced a new class of modular objects called locally harmonic Maass forms, which are annihilated almost everywhere by the hyperbolic Laplacian operator. In this paper, we realize these locally harmonic Maass forms as theta lifts of harmonic weak Maass forms. Using the theory of theta lifts, we then construct examples of (non-harmonic) local Maass forms, which are instead eigenfunctions of the hyperbolic Laplacian almost everywhere.
We define a regularized Shintani theta lift which maps weight $2k+2$ ($k \in \Z, k \geq 0$) harmonic Maass forms for congruence subgroups to (sesqui-)harmonic Maass forms of weight $3/2+k$ for the Weil representation of an even lattice of signature $(1,2)$. We show that its Fourier coefficients are given by traces of CM values and regularized cycle integrals of the input harmonic Maass form. Further, the Shintani theta lift is related via the $ξ$-operator to the Millson theta lift studied in our earlier work. We use this connection to construct $ξ$-preimages of Zagier's weight $1/2$ generating…
We derive the Fourier expansion of scalar-valued Eisenstein series for O(2, n+2) using classical methods of Siegel, Braun, Zagier, Bruinier and others. We assume that the underlying lattice splits two hyperbolic planes. Finally we prove for the Eisenstein series at the standard cusp that they belong to the Maass space for O(2, n + 2), an analogue of the "Spezialschar" for Siegel modular forms introduced by Maass, at least at all local places p, where the localization of the underlying lattice is maximal.
In this paper we consider an example of a Maass waveform which was constructed by Cohen from a function $σ$, studied by Andrews, Dyson and Hickerson, and it's companion $σ^*$. We put this example in a more general framework.
Real-analytic Jacobi forms play key roles in different areas of mathematics and physics, but a satisfactory theory of such Jacobi forms has been lacking. In this paper, we fill this gap by introducing a space of harmonic Maass-Jacobi forms with singularities which includes the real-analytic Jacobi forms from Zwegers's PhD thesis. We provide several structure results for the space of such Jacobi forms, and we employ Zwegers's $\widehatμ$-functions to establish a theta-like decomposition.
Siegel modular forms in the space of the mod $p$ kernel of the theta operator are constructed by the Eisenstein series in some odd-degree cases. Additionally, a similar result in the case of Hermitian modular forms is given.
We present some applications of the Kudla-Millson and the Millson theta lift. The two lifts map weakly holomorphic modular functions to vector valued harmonic Maass forms of weight $3/2$ and $1/2$, respectively. We give finite algebraic formulas for the coefficients of Ramanujan's mock theta functions $f(q)$ and $ω(q)$ in terms of traces of CM-values of a weakly holomorphic modular function. Further, we construct vector valued harmonic Maass forms whose shadows are unary theta functions, and whose holomorphic parts have rational coefficients. This yields a rationality result for the coefficien…
We present completions of mock theta functions to harmonic weak Maass forms of weight $1/2$ and algebraic formulas for the coefficients of mock theta functions. We give several harmonic weak Maass forms of weight $1/2$ that have mock theta functions as their holomorphic part. Using these harmonic weak Maass forms and the Millson theta lift we compute finite algebraic formulas for the coefficients of the appearing mock theta functions in terms of traces of singular moduli.
We investigate so-called "higher" Siegel theta lifts on Lorentzian lattices in the spirit of Bruinier-Ehlen-Yang and Bruinier-Schwagenscheidt. We give a series representation of the lift in terms of Gauss hypergeometric functions, and evaluate the lift as the constant term of a Fourier series involving the Rankin-Cohen bracket of harmonic Maass forms and theta functions. Using the higher Siegel lifts, we obtain a vector-valued analogue of Mertens' result stating that the Rankin--Cohen bracket of the holomorphic part of a harmonic Maass form of weight $\frac{3}{2}$ and a unary theta function, p…
We find nice representatives for the 0-dimensional cusps of the degree $n$ Siegel upper half-space under the action of $Γ_0(\stufe)$. To each of these we attach a Siegel Eisenstein series, and then we make explicit a result of Siegel, realizing any integral weight average Siegel theta series of arbitrary level $\stufe$ and Dirichlet character $χ_L$ modulo $\stufe$ as a linear combination of Siegel Eisenstein series.
This note points out that for any odd prime $p$, Zagier's weight $3/2$ mock Eisenstein series can be completed to a $p$-adic modular form in a way that bears some resemblance to its completion to a harmonic Maass form.
In this note we extend integral weight harmonic Maass forms to functions defined on the upper and lower half-planes using the method of Poincaré series. This relates to Rademacher's "expansion of zero" principle, which was recently employed by Rhoades to link mock theta functions and partial theta functions.
We derive explicit formulas for the action of the Hecke operator $T(p)$ on the genus theta series of a positive definite integral quadratic form and prove a theorem on the generation of spaces of Eisenstein series by genus theta series. We also discuss connections of our results with Kudla's matching principle for theta integrals.
The space of polyharmonic Maass forms was introduced by Lagarias-Rhoades, recently. They constructed its basis from the Taylor coefficients of the real analytic Eisenstein series. In this paper, we introduce polyharmonic weak Maass forms, that is, we relax the moderate growth condition at cusp, and we construct a basis as a generalization of Lagarias-Rhoades' works. As a corollary, we can obtain a preimage of an arbitrary polyharmonic weak Maass form under the xi-operator.
We consider the Kudla-Millson theta series associated to a quadratic space of signature $(N,N)$. By combining a `see-saw' argument with the Siegel-Weil formula, we show that its (regularized) integral along a torus attached to a totally real field of degree $N$ is the diagonal restriction of an Eisenstein series. It allows us to express the Fourier coefficients of the diagonal restriction as intersection numbers, which generalizes a result of Darmon-Pozzi-Vonk to totally real fields.
We derive a precise relation of poles of Eisenstein series associated to the cuspidal datum $χ\otimesσ$ and the lowest occurrence of theta lifts of a cuspidal automorphic representation $σ$ of a unitary group, where $χ$ is a conjugate self-dual character. A key ingredient of the proof is the computation of period integrals of truncated Eisenstein series.
We construct a family of harmonic Maass forms of polynomial growth of any level corresponding to any cusp whose shadows are Eisenstein series of integral weight. We further consider Dirichlet series attached to a harmonic Maass form of polynomial growth, study its analytic properties, and prove an analogue of Weil's converse theorem.
Some generalizations of the Maass relation for Siegel modular forms of higher degrees have been obtained by several authors. In the present article we first give a new generalization of the Maass relation for Siegel-Eisenstein series of arbitrary degrees. Furthermore, we show that the Duke-Imamoglu-Ibukiyama-Ikeda lifts satisfy this generalized Maass relation with some modifications. As an application of the generalized Maass relation in the present article we give a new proof of the Miyawaki-Ikeda lifts of two elliptic modular forms. Namely, we compute the standard L-function of the Miyawaki-…
We give effective lower bounds for $L(1,χ)$ via Eisenstein series on $Γ_0(q) \backslash \mathbb{H}$. The proof uses the Maass-Selberg relation for truncated Eisenstein series and sieve theory in the form of the Brun-Titchmarsh inequality. The method follows closely the work of Sarnak in using Eisenstein series to find effective lower bounds for $ζ(1+it)$.
It was shown in previous work that the one-variable $\widehatμ$-function defined by Zwegers (and Zagier) and his indefinite theta series attached to lattices of signature $(r\!+\!1,1)$ are both Heisenberg harmonic Maaß-Jacobi forms. We extend the concept of Heisenberg harmonicity to Maaß-Jacobi forms of arbitrary many elliptic variables, and produce indefinite theta series of "product type" for non-degenerate lattices of signature $(r\!+\!s,s)$. We thus obtain a clean generalization of $\widehatμ$ to these negative definite lattices. From restrictions to torsion points of Heisenberg harmonic M…
Harmonic weak Maass forms of half-integral weight are the subject of many recent works. They are closely related to Ramanujan's mock theta functions, their theta lifts give rise to Arakelov Green functions, and their coefficients are often related to central values and derivatives of Hecke L-functions. We present an algorithm to compute harmonic weak Maass forms numerically, based on the automorphy method due to Hejhal and Stark. As explicit examples we consider harmonic weak Maass forms of weight 1/2 associated to the elliptic curves 11a1, 37a1, 37b1. We made extensive numerical computations …
We consider the Hermitian Eisenstein series $E^{(\mathbb{K})}_k$ of degree $2$ and weight $k$ associated with an imaginary-quadratic number field $\mathbb{K}$ and determine the influence of $\mathbb{K}$ on the arithmetic and the growth of its Fourier coefficients. We find that they satisfy the identity $E^{{(\mathbb{K})}^2}_4 = E^{{(\mathbb{K})}}_8$, which is well-known for Siegel modular forms of degree $2$, if and only if $\mathbb{K} = \mathbb{Q} (\sqrt{-3})$. As an application, we show that the Eisenstein series $E^{(\mathbb{K})}_k$, $k=4,6,8,10,12$ are algebraically independent whenever $\…
In this paper, we study the Mellin transform of the weight 2 level $N$ polar harmonic Maass form $H_{N,z}^*(τ)$, and analyze this (generalized) $L$-function as $\mathrm{Im}(z)\to \infty$. On the way, we also calculate the Fourier expansion of $H_{N,z}^*(τ)$ at arbitrary cusps of $Γ_0(N)$, and we give a functional equation and factorization into local factors of the $L$-function for the weight 2 level $N$ Eisenstein series at the cusps $i\infty$ and $0$.
In this paper, we investigate traces of cycle integrals of certain meromorphic modular forms. By relating them to regularised theta lifts we provide explicit formulae for them in terms of coefficients of harmonic Maass forms.
In the theory of elliptic functions and elliptic curves, the Weierstrass $zeta$ function (which is essentially an antiderivative of the Weierstrass $\wp$ function) plays a prominent role. Although it is not an elliptic function, Eisenstein constructed a simple (non-holomorphic) completion of this form which is doubly periodic. This theorem has begun to play an important role in the theory of harmonic Maass forms, and was crucial to work of Guerzhoy as well as Alfes, Griffin, Ono, and the author. In particular, this simple completion of $ζ$ provides a powerful method to construct harmonic Maass…
We discuss polyharmonic Maass forms of even integer weight on PSL(2, Z)\H, which are a generalization of classical Maass forms. We explain the role of real-analytic Eisenstein series E_k(z, s) and the differential operator $\partial/\partial s$ in this theory.
In this paper, we give an overview of our previous paper concerning the investigation of the algebraic and $p$-adic properties of Eisenstein-Kronecker numbers using Mumford's theory of algebraic theta functions.
We study two closely related problems stemming from the random wave conjecture for Maass forms. The first problem is bounding the $L^4$-norm of a Maass form in the large eigenvalue limit; we complete the work of Spinu to show that the $L^4$-norm of an Eisenstein series $E(z,1/2+it_g)$ restricted to compact sets is bounded by $\sqrt{\log t_g}$. The second problem is quantum unique ergodicity in shrinking sets; we show that by averaging over the centre of hyperbolic balls in $Γ\backslash \mathbb{H}$, quantum unique ergodicity holds for almost every shrinking ball whose radius is larger than the …
Sander Zwegers showed that Ramanujan's mock theta functions are $q$-hypergeometric series, whose $q$-expansion coefficients are half of the Fourier coefficients of a non-holomorphic modular form. George Andrews, Henri Cohen, Freeman Dyson, and Dean Hickerson found a pair of $q$-hypergeometric series each of which contains half of the Fourier coefficients of Maass waveform of eigenvalue $1/4$. This series of papers shows that a $q$-series construction, called ``renormalization'', yields the other half of the Fourier coefficients from a series which contains half of them. This construction unifi…
Let $f(q)=1+\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} α(n)q^n$ be the well-known third order mock theta of Ramanujan. In 1964, George Andrews proved an asymptotic formula of the form $$α(n)= \sum_{c\leq\sqrt{n}} ψ(n)+O_ε\left(n^ε\right),$$ where $ψ(n)$ is an expression involving generalized Kloosterman sums and the $I$-Bessel function. Andrews conjectured that the series converges to $α(n)$ when extended to infinity, and that it does not converge absolutely. Bringmann and Ono proved the first of these conjectures. Here we obtain a power savings bound for the error in Andrews' formula, and we also prove the second o…
In this paper, we explicitly construct harmonic Maass forms that map to the weight one theta series associated by Hecke to odd ray class group characters of real quadratic fields. From this construction, we give precise arithmetic information contained in the Fourier coefficients of the holomorphic part of the harmonic Maass form, establishing the main part of a conjecture of the second author.
We show that the twisted traces of CM values of weak Maass forms of weight 0 are Fourier coefficients of vector valued weak Maass forms of weight 3/2. These results generalize work by Zagier on traces of singular moduli. We utilize a twisted version of the theta lift considered by Bruinier and Funke.
It is known that average Siegel theta series lie in the space of Siegel Eisenstein series. Also, every lattice equipped with an even integral quadratic form lies in a maximal lattice. Here we consider average Siegel theta series of degree 2 attached to maximal lattices; we construct maps for which the average theta series is an eigenform. We evaluate the action of these maps on Siegel Eisenstein series of degree 2 (without knowing their Fourier coefficients), and then realise the average theta series as an explicit linear combination of the Eisenstein series.
We define one-parameter "massive" deformations of Maass forms and Jacobi forms. This is inspired by descriptions of plane gravitational waves in string theory. Examples include massive Green's functions (that we write in terms of Kronecker-Eisenstein series) and massive modular graph functions.
We give an explicit construct of a harmonic weak Maass form $F_Θ$ that is a "lift" of $Θ^3$, where $Θ$ is the classical Jacobi theta function. Just as the Fourier coefficients of $Θ^3$ are related to class numbers of imaginary quadratic fields, the Fourier coefficients of the "holomorphic part" of $F_Θ$ are associated to class numbers of real quadratic fields.
We study certain types of Fuchsian groups of the first kind denoted by $R(N)$, which coincide with the Fricke groups or the arithmetic Hecke triangle groups of low levels. We find all elliptic points and cusps of $R(p)$ for a prime $p$, and prove that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the set of equivalence classes of elliptic points of $R(p)$ and the imaginary quadratic class group. We also find the explicit formula of the Fourier expansion of the non-holomorphic Eisenstein series for $R(N)$ and study their analytic properties. These non-holomorphic Eisenstein series together with …
Let $Γ_n(\mathcal{\scriptstyle{O}}_{\mathbb{K}})$ denote the Hermitian modular group of degree $n$ over an imaginary quadratic number field $\mathbb{K}$ and $Δ_{n,\mathbb{K}}^*$ its maximal discrete extension in the special unitary group $SU(n,n;\mathbb{C})$. In this paper we study the action of $Δ_{n,\mathbb{K}}^*$ on Hermitian theta series and Maass spaces. For $n=2$ we will find theta lattices such that the corresponding theta series are modular forms with respect to $Δ_{2,\mathbb{K}}^*$ as well as examples where this is not the case. Our second focus lies on studying two different Maass sp…
We study the vector space V_k^m(λ) of shifted polyharmonic Maass forms of weight k \in 2Z, depth m \geq 0, and shift λ\in C. This space is composed of real-analytic modular forms of weight k for PSL(2,Z) with moderate growth at the cusp which are annihilated by (Δ_k - λ)^m, where Δ_k is the weight k hyperbolic Laplacian. We treat the case λ\neq 0, complementing work of the second and third authors on polyharmonic Maass forms (with no shift). We show that V_k^m(λ) is finite-dimensional and bound its dimension. We explain the role of the real-analytic Eisenstein series E_k(z,s) with λ=s(s+k-1) a…
We study a certain theta lift which maps weight $-2k$ to weight $1/2-k$ harmonic weak Maass forms for $k \in \mathbb{Z}, k \geq 0$, and which is closely related to the classical Shintani lift from weight $2k+2$ to weight $k+3/2$ cusp forms. We compute the Fourier expansion of the theta lift and show that it involves twisted traces of CM values and geodesic cycle integrals of the input function. As an application, we obtain a criterion for the non-vanishing of the central $L$-value of an integral weight newform $G$ in terms of the holomorphicity of the theta lift of a certain harmonic weak Maas…
A generalization of Serre's $p$-adic Eisenstein series in the case of Siegel modular forms is studied and a coincidence between a $p$-adic Siegel Eisenstein series and a genus theta series associated with a quaternary quadratic form is proved.

We show an asymptotic formula for the L^2 norm of the Eisenstein series restricted to a segment of a geodesic connecting infinity and an arbitrary real. For generic geodesics of this form, the asymptotic formula shows that the Eisenstein series satisfies restricted QUE. On the other hand, for rational geodesics, the Eisenstein series does not satisfy restricted quantum ergodicity. As an application, we show that the zero set of the Eisenstein series intersects every such geodesic segment, provided the spectral parameter is large. We also make analogous conjectures for the Maass cusp forms. In …
We demonstrate that quotients of septic theta functions appearing in S. Ramanujan's Notebooks and in F. Klein's work satisfy a new coupled system of nonlinear differential equations with interesting symmetric form. This differential system bears a close resemblance to an analogous system for quintic theta functions. The proof extends a technique used by Ramanujan to prove the classical differential system for normalized Eisenstein series on the full modular group. In the course of our work, we show that Klein's quartic relation induces new symmetric representations for low weight Eisenstein se…
In this paper, we use regularized theta liftings to construct weak Maass forms weight 1/2 as lifts of weak Maass forms of weight 0. As a special case we give a new proof of some of recent results of Duke, Toth and Imamoglu on cycle integrals of the modular j-invariant and extend these to any congruence subgroup. Moreover, our methods allow us to settle the open question of a geometric interpretation for periods of j along infinite geodesics in the upper half plane. In particular, we give the `central value' of the (non-existing) `L-function' for j. The key to the proofs is the construction of …
We discuss the problem of the vanishing of Poincaré series. This problem is known to be related to the existence of weakly holomorphic forms with prescribed principal part. The obstruction to the existence is related to the pseudomodularity of Ramanujan's mock theta functions. We embed the space of weakly holomorphic modular forms into the larger space of harmonic weak Maass forms. From this perspective we discuss the linear relations between Poincaré series and the connection to Ramanujan's mock theta functions.
