Let $Γ_n(\mathcal{\scriptstyle{O}}_{\mathbb{K}})$ denote the Hermitian modular group of degree $n$ over an imaginary quadratic number field $\mathbb{K}$ and $Δ_{n,\mathbb{K}}^*$ its maximal discrete extension in the special unitary group $SU(n,n;\mathbb{C})$. In this paper we study the action of $Δ_{n,\mathbb{K}}^*$ on Hermitian theta series and Maass spaces. For $n=2$ we will find theta lattices such that the corresponding theta series are modular forms with respect to $Δ_{2,\mathbb{K}}^*$ as well as examples where this is not the case. Our second focus lies on studying two different Maass spaces. We will see that the new found group $Δ_{2,\mathbb{K}}^*$ consolidates the different definitions of the spaces.
We construct theta liftings from half-integral weight weak Maass forms to even integral weight weak Maass forms by using regularized theta integral. Moreover it gives an extension of Niwa's theta liftings on harmonic weak Maass forms. And we obtain the similar results to those by Niwa.
The first two authors and Kohnen have recently introduced a new class of modular objects called locally harmonic Maass forms, which are annihilated almost everywhere by the hyperbolic Laplacian operator. In this paper, we realize these locally harmonic Maass forms as theta lifts of harmonic weak Maass forms. Using the theory of theta lifts, we then construct examples of (non-harmonic) local Maass forms, which are instead eigenfunctions of the hyperbolic Laplacian almost everywhere.
We define a regularized Shintani theta lift which maps weight $2k+2$ ($k \in \Z, k \geq 0$) harmonic Maass forms for congruence subgroups to (sesqui-)harmonic Maass forms of weight $3/2+k$ for the Weil representation of an even lattice of signature $(1,2)$. We show that its Fourier coefficients are given by traces of CM values and regularized cycle integrals of the input harmonic Maass form. Further, the Shintani theta lift is related via the $ξ$-operator to the Millson theta lift studied in our earlier work. We use this connection to construct $ξ$-preimages of Zagier's weight $1/2$ generating…
In this paper we consider an example of a Maass waveform which was constructed by Cohen from a function $σ$, studied by Andrews, Dyson and Hickerson, and it's companion $σ^*$. We put this example in a more general framework.
It was shown in previous work that the one-variable $\widehatμ$-function defined by Zwegers (and Zagier) and his indefinite theta series attached to lattices of signature $(r\!+\!1,1)$ are both Heisenberg harmonic Maaß-Jacobi forms. We extend the concept of Heisenberg harmonicity to Maaß-Jacobi forms of arbitrary many elliptic variables, and produce indefinite theta series of "product type" for non-degenerate lattices of signature $(r\!+\!s,s)$. We thus obtain a clean generalization of $\widehatμ$ to these negative definite lattices. From restrictions to torsion points of Heisenberg harmonic M…
In this paper, we explicitly construct mock modular forms whose shadows are Eisenstein series of arbitrary integral and half-integral weight, level and character at the cusps $\infty$ and $0$. As an application, we give explicit construction of harmonic weak Maass forms which are Hecke eigenforms and are the preimages of $Θ^k, k \in \{ 3, 5, 7\}$ under the shadow operator, where $Θ$ is the classical Jacobi theta function.
Real-analytic Jacobi forms play key roles in different areas of mathematics and physics, but a satisfactory theory of such Jacobi forms has been lacking. In this paper, we fill this gap by introducing a space of harmonic Maass-Jacobi forms with singularities which includes the real-analytic Jacobi forms from Zwegers's PhD thesis. We provide several structure results for the space of such Jacobi forms, and we employ Zwegers's $\widehatμ$-functions to establish a theta-like decomposition.
We consider pullbacks of hermitian Maass lifts of degree 2 to the diagonal matrices. By using the pullbacks, we give an explicit formura for central values of L-functions for GL(2)*GL(2).
We present some applications of the Kudla-Millson and the Millson theta lift. The two lifts map weakly holomorphic modular functions to vector valued harmonic Maass forms of weight $3/2$ and $1/2$, respectively. We give finite algebraic formulas for the coefficients of Ramanujan's mock theta functions $f(q)$ and $ω(q)$ in terms of traces of CM-values of a weakly holomorphic modular function. Further, we construct vector valued harmonic Maass forms whose shadows are unary theta functions, and whose holomorphic parts have rational coefficients. This yields a rationality result for the coefficien…
In this paper, we discuss the representation-theoretical Miyawaki lift for unitary groups in terms of the endoscopic classification. We give an explicit determination of Miyawaki lifts for U(1) and U(3) with respect to Hermitian Maass lifts, namely Ikeda lifts for U(4).
We present completions of mock theta functions to harmonic weak Maass forms of weight $1/2$ and algebraic formulas for the coefficients of mock theta functions. We give several harmonic weak Maass forms of weight $1/2$ that have mock theta functions as their holomorphic part. Using these harmonic weak Maass forms and the Millson theta lift we compute finite algebraic formulas for the coefficients of the appearing mock theta functions in terms of traces of singular moduli.
We investigate so-called "higher" Siegel theta lifts on Lorentzian lattices in the spirit of Bruinier-Ehlen-Yang and Bruinier-Schwagenscheidt. We give a series representation of the lift in terms of Gauss hypergeometric functions, and evaluate the lift as the constant term of a Fourier series involving the Rankin-Cohen bracket of harmonic Maass forms and theta functions. Using the higher Siegel lifts, we obtain a vector-valued analogue of Mertens' result stating that the Rankin--Cohen bracket of the holomorphic part of a harmonic Maass form of weight $\frac{3}{2}$ and a unary theta function, p…
For $K$ an imaginary quadratic field with discriminant $-D_K$ and associated quadratic Galois character $χ_K$, Kojima, Gritsenko and Krieg studied a Hermitian Maass lift of elliptic modular cusp forms of level $D_K$ and nebentypus $χ_K$ via Hermitian Jacobi forms to Hermitian modular forms of level one for the unitary group $U(2,2)$ split over $K$. We generalize this (under certain conditions on $K$ and $p$) to the case of $p$-oldforms of level $pD_K$ and character $χ_K$. To do this, we define an appropriate Hermitian Maass space for general level and prove that it is isomorphic to the space o…
In this note we extend integral weight harmonic Maass forms to functions defined on the upper and lower half-planes using the method of Poincaré series. This relates to Rademacher's "expansion of zero" principle, which was recently employed by Rhoades to link mock theta functions and partial theta functions.
We classify Harish-Chandra modules generated by the pullback to the metaplectic group of harmonic weak Maaß forms with exponential growth allowed at the cusps. This extends work by Schulze-Pillot and parallels recent work by Bringmann-Kudla, who investigated the case of integral weights. We realize each of our cases via a regularized theta lift of an integral weight harmonic weak Maaß form. Harish-Chandra modules in both integral and half-integral weight that occur need not be irreducible. Therefore, our display of the role that the theta lifting takes in this picture, we hope, contributes to …
We study special values of regularized theta lifts at complex multiplication (CM) points. In particular, we show that CM values of Borcherds products can be expressed in terms of finitely many Fourier coefficients of certain harmonic weak Maaß forms of weight one. As it turns out, these coefficients are logarithms of algebraic integers whose prime ideal factorization is determined by special cycles on an arithmetic curve. Our results imply a conjecture of Duke and Li and give a new proof of the modularity of a certain arithmetic generating series of weight one studied by Kudla, Rapoport and Ya…
For an imaginary quadratic field $K$ of discriminant $-D$, let $χ= χ_K$ be the associated quadratic character. We will show that the space of special hermitian Jacobi forms of level $N$ is isomorphic to the space of plus forms of level $DN$ and nebentypus $χ$ (the hermitian analogue of Kohnen's plus space) for any integer $N$ prime to $D$. This generalizes the results of Krieg from $N = 1$ to arbitrary level. Combining this isomorphism with the recent work of Berger and Klosin and a modification of Ikeda's construction we prove the existence of a lift from the space of elliptic modular forms t…
Harmonic weak Maass forms of half-integral weight are the subject of many recent works. They are closely related to Ramanujan's mock theta functions, their theta lifts give rise to Arakelov Green functions, and their coefficients are often related to central values and derivatives of Hecke L-functions. We present an algorithm to compute harmonic weak Maass forms numerically, based on the automorphy method due to Hejhal and Stark. As explicit examples we consider harmonic weak Maass forms of weight 1/2 associated to the elliptic curves 11a1, 37a1, 37b1. We made extensive numerical computations …
In this paper, we investigate traces of cycle integrals of certain meromorphic modular forms. By relating them to regularised theta lifts we provide explicit formulae for them in terms of coefficients of harmonic Maass forms.
Recently, Bruinier and Ono proved that the coefficients of certain weight -1/2 harmonic weak Maaß forms are given as "traces" of singular moduli for harmonic weak Maaß forms. Here, we prove that similar results hold for the coefficients of harmonic weak Maaß forms of weight $3/2+k$, $k$ even, and weight $1/2-k$, $k$ odd, by extending the theta lift of Bruinier-Funke and Bruinier-Ono. Moreover, we generalize their result to include \textit{twisted} traces of singular moduli using earlier work of the author and Ehlen. Employing a duality result between weight $k$ and $2-k$, we are able to cover …
Let $f(q)=1+\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} α(n)q^n$ be the well-known third order mock theta of Ramanujan. In 1964, George Andrews proved an asymptotic formula of the form $$α(n)= \sum_{c\leq\sqrt{n}} ψ(n)+O_ε\left(n^ε\right),$$ where $ψ(n)$ is an expression involving generalized Kloosterman sums and the $I$-Bessel function. Andrews conjectured that the series converges to $α(n)$ when extended to infinity, and that it does not converge absolutely. Bringmann and Ono proved the first of these conjectures. Here we obtain a power savings bound for the error in Andrews' formula, and we also prove the second o…
Sander Zwegers showed that Ramanujan's mock theta functions are $q$-hypergeometric series, whose $q$-expansion coefficients are half of the Fourier coefficients of a non-holomorphic modular form. George Andrews, Henri Cohen, Freeman Dyson, and Dean Hickerson found a pair of $q$-hypergeometric series each of which contains half of the Fourier coefficients of Maass waveform of eigenvalue $1/4$. This series of papers shows that a $q$-series construction, called ``renormalization'', yields the other half of the Fourier coefficients from a series which contains half of them. This construction unifi…

In this paper, we use regularized theta liftings to construct weak Maass forms weight 1/2 as lifts of weak Maass forms of weight 0. As a special case we give a new proof of some of recent results of Duke, Toth and Imamoglu on cycle integrals of the modular j-invariant and extend these to any congruence subgroup. Moreover, our methods allow us to settle the open question of a geometric interpretation for periods of j along infinite geodesics in the upper half plane. In particular, we give the `central value' of the (non-existing) `L-function' for j. The key to the proofs is the construction of …
We discuss the problem of the vanishing of Poincaré series. This problem is known to be related to the existence of weakly holomorphic forms with prescribed principal part. The obstruction to the existence is related to the pseudomodularity of Ramanujan's mock theta functions. We embed the space of weakly holomorphic modular forms into the larger space of harmonic weak Maass forms. From this perspective we discuss the linear relations between Poincaré series and the connection to Ramanujan's mock theta functions.
We analyze the mock modular behavior of $\bar{P}_ω(q)$, a partition function introduced by Andrews, Dixit, Schultz, and Yee. This function arose in a study of smallest parts functions related to classical third order mock theta functions, one of which is $ω(q)$. We find that the modular completion of $\bar{P}_ω(q)$ is not simply a harmonic Maass form, but is instead the derivative of a linear combination of products of various harmonic Maass forms and theta functions. We precisely describe its behavior under modular transformations and find that the image under the Maass lowering operator lies…
We extend Borcherds' singular theta lift in signature $(1,2)$ to harmonic Maass forms of weight $1/2$ whose non-holomorphic part is allowed to be of exponential growth at $i\infty$. We determine the singularities of the lift and compute its Fourier expansion. It turns out that the lift is continuous but not differentiable along certain geodesics in the upper half-plane corresponding to the non-holomorphic principal part of the input. As an application, we obtain a generalization to higher level of the weight $2$ modular integral of Duke, Imamoglu and Tóth. Further, we construct automorphic pro…
The mod $p$ kernel of the theta operator is the set of modular forms whose image of the theta operator is congruent to zero modulo a prime $p$. In the case of Siegel modular forms, the authors found interesting examples of such modular forms. For example, Igusa's odd weight cusp form is an element of mod 23 kernel of the theta operator. In this paper, we give some examples which represent elements in the mod $p$ kernel of the theta operator in the case of Hermitian modular forms of degree 2.
The mock theta conjectures are ten identities involving Ramanujan's fifth-order mock theta functions. The conjectures were proven by Hickerson in 1988 using q-series methods. Using methods from the theory of harmonic Maass forms, specifically work of Zwegers and Bringmann-Ono, Folsom reduced the proof of the mock theta conjectures to a finite computation. Both of these approaches involve proving the identities individually, relying on work of Andrews-Garvan. Here we give a unified proof of the mock theta conjectures by realizing them as an equality between two nonholomorphic vector-valued modu…
Modular and mock modular forms possess many striking $p$-adic properties, as studied by Bringmann, Guerzhoy, Kane, Kent, Ono, and others. Candelori developed a geometric theory of harmonic Maass forms arising from the de Rham cohomology of modular curves. In the setting of over-convergent $p$-adic modular forms, Candelori and Castella showed this leads to $p$-adic analogs of harmonic Maass forms. In this paper we take an analytic approach to construct $p$-adic analogs of harmonic Maass forms of weight $0$ %and $1/2$ with square free level. Although our approaches differ, where the two theories…
We study special cycles on integral models of Shimura varieties associated with unitary similitude groups of signature (n-1,1). We construct an arithmetic theta lift from harmonic Maass forms of weight 2-n to the arithmetic Chow group of the integral model of a unitary Shimura variety, by associating to a harmonic Maass form f a linear combination of Kudla-Rapoport divisors, equipped with the Green function given by the regularized theta lift of f. Our main result is an equality of two complex numbers: (1) the height pairing of the arithmetic theta lift of f against a CM cycle, and (2) the cen…
Let $f$ be a cuspidal newform (holomorphic or Maass) of arbitrary level and nebentypus and denote by $λ_f(n)$ its $n$-th Hecke eigenvalue. Let $$ r(n)=\#\left\{(n_1,n_2)\in \mathbb{Z}^2:n_1^2+n_2^2=n\right\}. $$ In this paper, we study the shifted convolution sum $$ \mathcal{S}_h(X)=\sum_{n\leq X}λ_f(n+h)r(n), \qquad 1\leq h\leq X, $$ and establish uniform bounds with respect to the shift $h$ for $\mathcal{S}_h(X)$.
We give generators and relations for the graded rings of Hermitian modular forms of degree two over the rings of integers in $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-7})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-11})$. In both cases we prove that the subrings of symmetric modular forms are generated by Maass lifts. The computation uses a reduction process against Borcherds products which also leads to a dimension formula for the spaces of modular forms.
For any natural number $\ell $ and any prime $p\equiv 1 \pmod{4}$ not dividing $\ell $ there is a Hermitian modular form of arbitrary genus $n$ over $L:=\Q [\sqrt{-\ell}]$ that is congruent to 1 modulo $p$ which is a Hermitian theta series of an $O_L$-lattice of rank $p-1$ admitting a fixed point free automorphism of order $p$. It is shown that also for non-free lattices such theta series are modular forms.
We consider the Hermitian Eisenstein series $E^{(\mathbb{K})}_k$ of degree $2$ and weight $k$ associated with an imaginary-quadratic number field $\mathbb{K}$ and determine the influence of $\mathbb{K}$ on the arithmetic and the growth of its Fourier coefficients. We find that they satisfy the identity $E^{{(\mathbb{K})}^2}_4 = E^{{(\mathbb{K})}}_8$, which is well-known for Siegel modular forms of degree $2$, if and only if $\mathbb{K} = \mathbb{Q} (\sqrt{-3})$. As an application, we show that the Eisenstein series $E^{(\mathbb{K})}_k$, $k=4,6,8,10,12$ are algebraically independent whenever $\…
Let K be an imaginary quadratic field with discriminant -D, and x the Dirichlet character corresponding to the extension K/Q. Let m=2n or 2n+1 with n a positive integer. Let f be a primitive form of weight 2k+1 and level D with Neben character x, or a primitive form of weight 2k for SL(2,Z) according as m=2n, or m=2n+1. For such an f let I(m,f) be the lift of f to the space of Hermitian modular forms of degree m constructed by Ikeda. We then give an explicit formula of the Koecher-Maass series L(s,I(m,f)) of I(m,f). This is a generalization of [Y. Mizuno, Manuscripta Math. 119(2006), 175-216].
Bruinier and Ono recently developed the theory of generalized Borcherds products, which uses coefficients of certain Maass forms as exponents in infinite product expansions of meromorphic modular forms. Using this, one can use classical results on congruences of modular forms to obtain congruences for Maass forms. In this note we work out the example of Ramanujan's mock theta functions f and ω in detail.

Siegel modular forms in the space of the mod $p$ kernel of the theta operator are constructed by the Eisenstein series in some odd-degree cases. Additionally, a similar result in the case of Hermitian modular forms is given.
Generalizing the results of Kojima, Gritsenko and Krieg, we define an adelic version of the Maass space for hermitian modular forms of weight k regarded as functions on adelic points of the quasi-split unitary group U(2,2) associated with an imaginary quadratic extension F/Q of discriminant D_F. When the class number h_F of F is odd, we show that the Maass space is invariant under the action of the local Hecke algebras of U(2,2)(Q_p) for all p not dividing D_F. As a consequence we obtain a Hecke-equivariant injective map from the Maass space to the h_F-fold direct product of the space of ellip…
In this monograph, we lay some foundations of a theory of infinite dimensional Euclidean lattices - and more generally, of infinite dimensional Hermitian vector bundles over some "arithmetic curve" ${\rm Spec}\,\mathcal{O}_K$ attached to the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ of some number field $K$ - with a view towards applications to transcendence theory and Diophantine geometry. In the first chapters of this monograph, we study the properties of the invariant $h^0_θ(\overline{E})$ attached to some Euclidean lattice $\overline{E}:= (E, \Vert.\Vert)$, defined by the expression $$h^0_θ(\overli…
We study generalized special cycles on Hermitian locally symmetric spaces $Γ\backslash D$ associated to the groups $G=\mathrm{U}(p,q)$, $\mathrm{Sp}(2n,\mathbb{R}) $ and $\mathrm{O}^*(2n)$. These cycles are (covered by) locally symmetric spaces associated to subgroups of $G$ which are of the same type. Using oscillator representation and a construction which essentially comes from the thesis of Greg Anderson, we show that Poincaré duals of these generalized special cycles can be viewed as Fourier coefficients of a theta series. This gives new cases of theta lifts from the cohomology of Hermtia…
Our aim is to clarify the relationship between Kudla's and Bruinier's Green functions attached to special cycles on Shimura varieties of orthogonal and unitary type. These functions play a key role in the arithmetic geometry of the special cycles in the context of Kudla's program. In particular, we show that the generating series obtained by taking the differences of the two families of Green functions is a modular form with trivial holomorphic projection. Along the way, we construct a section of the Maass lowering operator for moderate growth modular forms valued in the Weil representation us…
