Fix a positive integer $N$. Select an additive composition $ξ$ of $N$ uniformly out of $2^{N-1}$ possibilities. The interplay between the number of parts in $ξ$ and the maximum part in $ξ$ is our focus. It is not surprising that correlations $ρ(N)$ between these quantities are negative; we earlier gave inconclusive evidence that $\lim_{N \to \infty} ρ(N)$ is strictly less than zero. A proof of this result would imply asymptotic dependence. We now retract our presumption in such an unforeseen outcome. Similar experimental findings apply when $ξ$ is a 1-free composition, i.e., possessing only parts $\geq 2$.
A composition $π=π_1π_2\cdotsπ_k$ of a positive integer $n$ is an ordered collection of one or more positive integers whose sum is $n$ . The number of summands, namely $k$, is called the number of parts of $π$. In this paper, we introduce two statistics over compositions of an integer $n$ with exactly $k$ parts: heights of symmetric peaks and depths of symmetric valleys over all compositions of $n$. We derive an explicit formula for the generating functions of compositions of $n$ with exactly $k$ parts according to the number of symmetric peaks (valleys) and the total heights (depths) of peaks…
We discuss closed-form formulas for the (n; k)-th partial Bell polynomials derived in Cvijovic. We show that partial Bell polynomials are special cases of weighted integer compositions, and demonstrate how the identities for partial Bell polynomials easily follow from more general identities for weighted integer compositions. We also provide short and elegant probabilistic proofs of the latter, in terms of sums of discrete integer-valued random variables. Finally, we outline further identities for the partial Bell polynomials.
We study part sizes of supercritical locally restricted sequential structures. This extends previous results about locally restricted integer compositions and part sizes in smooth supercritical compositional structures. Applications are given for runs of subcompositions. The problems are formulated as enumerating directed walks in sized infinite digraphs and the proofs depend heavily on earlier results by Bender and Canfield about infinite transfer matrices.
We characterize the downsets of integer partitions (ordered by containment of Ferrers diagrams) and compositions (ordered by the generalized subword order) which have finite dimension in the sense of Dushnik and Miller. In the case of partitions, while the set of all partitions has infinite dimension, we show that every proper downset of partitions has finite dimension. For compositions we identify four minimal downsets of infinite dimension and establish that every downset which does not contain one of these four has finite dimension.
Let $0<k\in\mathbb{Z}$. We zipper-merge integer compositions with sums $k$ and $k+1$, equal number of parts and initial entries equal at least to 1 and 2, respectively. This yields bitstrings with two initial zeros, $k-1$ remaining zeros and $k$ ones. Tensors whose entries are such bitstrings contain unique representations of all Dyck words of length $2k$. If rows and columns of such tensors are disposed in descending lexicographic order, then their entries not representing Dyck words form disjoint unions of descending staircases corresponding to strict lower triangular submatrices.
In this paper we give a fast algorithm to generate all partitions of a positive integer $n$. Integer partitions may be encoded as either ascending or descending compositions for the purposes of systematic generation. It is known that the ascending composition generation algorithm is substantially more efficient than its descending composition counterpart. Using tree structures for storing the partitions of integers, we develop a new ascending composition generation algorithm which is substantially more efficient than the algorithms from the literature.
For a given integer $d\ge 1$, we consider $\binom{n+d-1}{d}$-color compositions of a positive integer $ν$ for which each part of size $n$ admits $\binom{n+d-1}{d}$ colors. We give explicit formulas for the enumeration of such compositions, generalizing existing results for $n$-color compositions (case $d=1$) and $\binom{n+1}{2}$-color compositions (case $d=2$). In addition, we give bijections from the set of $\binom{n+d-1}{d}$-color compositions of $ν$ to the set of compositions of $(d+1)ν- 1$ having only parts of size $1$ and $d+1$, the set of compositions of $(d+1)ν$ having only parts of siz…
A strongly concave composition of $n$ is an integer partition with strictly decreasing and increasing parts. In this paper we give a uniform asymptotic formula for the rank statistic of a strongly concave composition introduced by Andrews, Rhoades and Zwegers ['Modularity of the concave composition generating function', Algebra \& Number Theory 7 (2013), no. 9, 2103--2139].
We use sums over integer compositions analogous to generating functions in partition theory, to express certain partition enumeration functions as sums over compositions into parts that are $k$-gonal numbers; our proofs employ Ramanujan's theta functions. We explore applications to lacunary $q$-series, and to a new class of composition-theoretic Dirichlet series.
Integer compositions, integer partitions, Fibonacci numbers, and generalizations of these have recently been shown to be interconnected via two-toned tilings of horizontal grids. In this article, we present refinements of two-toned tilings, describe functions which analyze them, and apply these to generalizations of integer compositions and partitions which interpolate between the two.
We find the number of compositions over finite abelian groups under two types of restrictions: (i) each part belongs to a given subset and (ii) small runs of consecutive parts must have given properties. Waring's problem over finite fields can be converted to type~(i) compositions, whereas Carlitz and locally Mullen compositions can be formulated as type~(ii) compositions. We use the multisection formula to translate the problem from integers to group elements, the transfer matrix method to do exact counting, and finally the Perron-Frobenius theorem to derive asymptotics. We also exhibit bijec…
Integer compositions with certain colored parts were introduced by Andrews in 2007 to address a number-theoretic problem. Integer compositions allowing zero as some parts were introduced by Ouvry and Polychronakos in 2019. We give a bijection between these two varieties of compositions and determine various combinatorial properties of these multicompositions. In particular, we determine the count of multicompositions by number of all parts, number of positive parts, and number of zeros. Then, working from three types of compositions with restricted parts that are counted by the Fibonacci seque…
How many ways can we write $n$ as a sum of $3$ positive integers, no pair of which share a common factor? We express this quantity in terms of the number of solutions to a certain class of linear Diophantine equations. This allows us to show that there are $$ \prod_{p \mid n} \left( 1- \frac{1}{p^2} \right) \prod_{q \nmid n} \left( 1- \frac{3}{q^2} \right) \frac{n^2}{2} + O(n^{3/2+o(1)}) $$ such compositions, where the products are over primes that respectively do and don't divide $n$. This strengthens the previous result of Bubbolini, Luca, and Spiga (arXiv:1202.1670)
