Let A be any set of positive integers and n a positive integer. A composition of n with parts in A is an ordered collection of one or more elements in A whose sum is n. We derive generating functions for the number of compositions of n with m parts in A that have r occurrences of 3-letter patterns formed by two (adjacent) instances of levels, rises and drops. We also derive asymptotics for the number of compositions of n that avoid a given pattern. Finally, we obtain the generating function for the number of k-ary words of length m which contain a prescribed number of occurrences of a given pattern as a special case of our results.
This paper completes a project to enumerate permutations avoiding a triple T of 4-letter patterns, in the sense of classical pattern avoidance, for every T. There are 317 symmetry classes of such triples T and previous papers have enumerated avoiders for all but 14 of them. One of these 14 is conjectured not to have an algebraic generating function. Here, we find the generating function for each of the remaining 13, and it is algebraic in each case.
This paper is one of a series whose goal is to enumerate the avoiders, in the sense of classical pattern avoidance, for each triple of 4-letter patterns. There are 317 symmetry classes of triples of 4-letter patterns, avoiders of 267 of which have already been enumerated. Here we enumerate avoiders for all small Wilf classes that have a representative triple containing the pattern 1342, giving 40 new enumerations and leaving only 13 classes still to be enumerated. In all but one case, we obtain an explicit algebraic generating function that is rational or of degree 2. The remaining one is show…
An avoidance pattern where the letters within an occurrence of which are required to be adjacent is referred to as a subword. In this paper, we enumerate members of the set NC_n of non-crossing partitions of length n according to the number of occurrences of several infinite families of subword patterns each containing repeated letters. As a consequence of our results, we obtain explicit generating function formulas counting the members of NC_n for n >= 0 according to all subword patterns of length three containing a repeated letter. Further, simple expressions are deduced for the total number…
Graph compositions generalize both integer compositions and partitions of a finite set. We develop formulas, generating functions and recurrence relations for composition counting functions for several families of graphs.
Recently, it has been determined that there are 242 Wilf classes of triples of 4-letter permutation patterns by showing that there are 32 non-singleton Wilf classes. Moreover, the generating function for each triple lying in a non-singleton Wilf class has been explicitly determined. In this paper, toward the goal of enumerating avoiders for the singleton Wilf classes, we obtain the generating function for all but one of the triples containing 1324. (The exceptional triple is conjectured to be intractable.) Our methods are both combinatorial and analytic, including generating trees, recurrence …
The concept of graph compositions is related to several number theoretic concepts, including partitions of positive integers and the cardinality of the power set of finite sets. This paper examines graph compositions where the total number of components is restricted and illustrates a connection between graph compositions and Stirling numbers of the second kind.
This paper deals with the enumeration of the higher order non-trivial compositions of the differential operations and the directional derivative in the space $R^n$ ($n \geq 3$). We present the recurrences for a counting the higher order non-trivial compositions.
Enumeration problems related to words avoiding patterns as well as permutations that contain the pattern $123$ exactly once have been studied in great detail. However, the problem of enumerating words that contain the pattern $123$ exactly once is new and will be the focus of this paper. Previously, Doron Zeilberger provided a shortened version of Alexander Burstein's combinatorial proof of John Noonan's theorem that the number of permutations with exactly one $321$ pattern is equal to $\frac{3}{n} \binom{2n}{n+3}$. Surprisingly, a similar method can be directly adapted to words. We are able t…
We study Fibonacci compositions, which are compositions of natural numbers that only use Fibonacci numbers, in two different contexts. We first prove inequalities comparing the number of Fibonacci compositions to regular compositions where summands have a maximum possible value. Then, we consider asymptotic properties of Fibonacci compositions, comparing them to compositions whose terms come from positive linear recurrence sequences. Finally, we consider analogues of these results where we do not allow the use of a certain number of consecutive Fibonacci numbers starting from $F_2 = 1$.
A permutation graph is a graph that can be derived from a permutation, where the vertices correspond to letters of the permutation, and the edges represent inversions. We provide a construction to show that there are infinitely many connected $r$-regular permutation graphs for $r \geq 3$. We prove that all $3$-regular permutation graphs arise from a similar construction. Finally, we enumerate all $3$-regular permutation graphs on $n$ vertices.
Given a finite word $w$ over a finite alphabet $V$, consider the graph with vertex set $V$ and with an edge between two elements of $V$ if and only if the two elements alternate in the word $w$. Such a graph is said to be word-representable or 11-representable by the word $w$; this latter terminology arises from the phenomenon that the condition of two elements $x$ and $y$ alternating in a word $w$ is the same as the condition of the subword of $w$ induced by $x$ and $y$ avoiding the pattern 11. In this paper, we first study minimal length words which word-represent graphs, giving an explicit …
We study pairs and m--tuples of compositions of a positive integer n with parts restricted to a subset P of positive integers. We obtain some exact enumeration results for the number of tuples of such compositions having the same number of parts. Under the uniform probability model, we obtain the asymptotics for the probability that two or, more generally, m randomly and independently chosen compositions of n have the same number of parts. For a large class of compositions, we show how a nice interplay between complex analysis and probability theory allows to get full asymptotics for this prob…
Motivated by the recent proof of the Stanley-Wilf conjecture, we study the asymptotic behavior of the number of permutations avoiding a generalized pattern. Generalized patterns allow the requirement that some pairs of letters must be adjacent in an occurrence of the pattern in the permutation, and consecutive patterns are a particular case of them. We determine the asymptotic behavior of the number of permutations avoiding a consecutive pattern, showing that they are an exponentially small proportion of the total number of permutations. For some other generalized patterns we give partial resu…
We study the number of solutions of the general semigroup equation in one variable, $X^\al=X^\be$, as well as of the system of equations $X^2=X, Y^2=Y, XY=YX$ in $H\wr T_n$, the wreath product of an arbitrary finite group $H$ with the full transformation semigroup $T_n$ on $n$ letters. For these solution numbers, we provide explicit exact formulae, as well as asymptotic estimates. Our results concerning the first mentioned problem generalize earlier results by Harris and Schoenfeld (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 3 (1967), 122-135) on the number of idempotents in $T_n$, and a partial result of Dress…
The Raney numbers $R_{p,r}(n)$ are a two-parameter generalization of the Catalan numbers that were introduced by Raney in his investigation of functional composition patterns \cite{Raney}. We give a new combinatorial interpretation for all Raney numbers in terms of planar embeddings of certain collections of trees, a construction that recovers the usual interpretation of the $p$-Catalan numbers in terms of $p$-ary trees via the specialization $R_{p,1}(n) =_{p} c_n$. Our technique leads to several combinatorial identities involving the Raney numbers and ordered partitions. We then give addition…
We say that a word $w$ on a totally ordered alphabet avoids the word $v$ if there are no subsequences in $w$ order-equivalent to $v$. In this paper we suggest a new approach to the enumeration of words on at most $k$ letters avoiding a given pattern. By studying an automaton which for fixed $k$ generates the words avoiding a given pattern we derive several previously known results for these kind of problems, as well as many new. In particular, we give a simple proof of the formula \cite{Reg1998} for exact asymptotics for the number of words on $k$ letters of length $n$ that avoids the pattern …
We study a family of equivalence relations on $S_n$, the group of permutations on $n$ letters, created in a manner similar to that of the Knuth relation and the forgotten relation. For our purposes, two permutations are in the same equivalence class if one can be reached from the other through a series of pattern-replacements using patterns whose order permutations are in the same part of a predetermined partition of $S_c$. When the partition is of $S_3$ and has one nontrivial part and that part is of size greater than two, we provide formulas for the number of classes created in each previous…
In [GM] Guibert and Mansour studied involutions on n letters avoiding (or containing exactly once) 132 and avoiding (or containing exactly once) an arbitrary pattern on k letters. They also established a bijection between 132-avoiding involutions and Dyck word prefixes of same length. Extending this bijection to bilateral words allows to determine more parameters; in particular, we consider the number of inversions and rises of the involutions onto the words. This is the starting point for considering two different directions: even/odd involutions and statistics of some generalized patterns. T…
We use sums over integer compositions analogous to generating functions in partition theory, to express certain partition enumeration functions as sums over compositions into parts that are $k$-gonal numbers; our proofs employ Ramanujan's theta functions. We explore applications to lacunary $q$-series, and to a new class of composition-theoretic Dirichlet series.
In this paper, we prove results on enumerations of sets of Rota-Baxter words in a finite number of generators and a finite number of unary operators. Rota-Baxter words are words formed by concatenating generators and images of words under Rota-Baxter operators. Under suitable conditions, they form canonical bases of free Rota-Baxter algebras and are studied recently in relation to combinatorics, number theory, renormalization in quantum field theory, and operads. Enumeration of a basis is often a first step to choosing a data representation in implementation. Our method applies some simple ide…
In this document we achieve exact and asymptotic enumeration of words, compositions over a finite group, and/or integer compositions characterized by local restrictions and, separately, subsequence pattern avoidance. We also count cyclically restricted and circular objects. This either fills gaps in the current literature by e.g. considering particular new patterns, or involves general progress, notably with locally restricted compositions over a finite group. We associate these compositions to walks on a covering graph whose structure is exploited to simplify asymptotic expressions. Specifica…
In this work, we generalize a recursive enumerative formula for connected Feynman diagrams with two external legs. The Feynman diagrams are defined from a fermionic gas with a two-body interaction. The generalized recurrence is valid for connected Feynman diagrams with an arbitrary number of external legs and an arbitrary order. The recurrence formula terms are expressed in function of weak compositions of non-negative integers and partitions of positive integers in such a way that to each term of the recurrence correspond a partition and a weak composition. The foundation of this enumeration …
We give multiple proofs of two formulas concerning the enumeration of permutations avoiding a monotone consecutive pattern with a certain value for the inverse peak number or inverse left peak number statistic. The enumeration in both cases is given by a sequence related to Fibonacci numbers. We also show that there is exactly one permutation whose inverse peak number is zero among all permutations with any fixed descent composition, and we give a few elementary consequences of this fact. Our proofs involve generating functions, symmetric functions, regular expressions, and monomino-domino til…
A partially ordered (generalized) pattern (POP) is a generalized pattern some of whose letters are incomparable, an extension of generalized permutation patterns introduced by Babson and Steingrimsson. POPs were introduced in the symmetric group by Kitaev [Partially ordered generalized patterns, Discrete Math. 298 (2005), 212-229; Introduction to partially ordered patterns, Discrete Appl. Math., to appear], and studied in the set of $k$-ary words by Kitaev and Mansour [Partially ordered generalized patterns and $k$-ary words, Annals of Combinatorics 7 (2003) 191-200]. Moreover, Kitaev et al. […
Given integers $a_1, a_2, ..., a_n$, with $a_1 + a_2 + ... + a_n \geq 1$, a symmetrically constrained composition $λ_1 + lambda_2 + ... + lambda_n = M$ of $M$ into $n$ nonnegative parts is one that satisfies each of the the $n!$ constraints ${\sum_{i=1}^n a_i λ_{π(i)} \geq 0 : π\in S_n}$. We show how to compute the generating function of these compositions, combining methods from partition theory, permutation statistics, and lattice-point enumeration.
A classical result by Guibas and Odlyzko obtained in 1981 gives the generating function for the number of strings that avoid a given set of substrings with the property that no substring is contained in any of the others. In this paper, we give an analogue of this result for the enumeration of compositions that avoid a given set of prohibited substrings, subject to the compositions' length (number of parts) and weight. We also give examples of families of strings to be avoided that allow for an explicit formula for the generating function. Our results extend recent results by Myers on avoidanc…
The monic sequence that shifts left under convolution with itself is the Catalan numbers with 130+ combinatorial interpretations. Here we establish a combinatorial interpretation for the monic sequence that shifts left under composition: it counts permutations that contain a 3241 pattern only as part of a 35241 pattern. We give two recurrences, the first allowing relatively fast computation, the second similar to one for the Catalan numbers. Among the 4 times 4! = 96 similarly restricted patterns involving 4 letters (such as 4\underline{2}31: a 431 pattern only occurs as part of a 4231), four …
For a given integer $d\ge 1$, we consider $\binom{n+d-1}{d}$-color compositions of a positive integer $ν$ for which each part of size $n$ admits $\binom{n+d-1}{d}$ colors. We give explicit formulas for the enumeration of such compositions, generalizing existing results for $n$-color compositions (case $d=1$) and $\binom{n+1}{2}$-color compositions (case $d=2$). In addition, we give bijections from the set of $\binom{n+d-1}{d}$-color compositions of $ν$ to the set of compositions of $(d+1)ν- 1$ having only parts of size $1$ and $d+1$, the set of compositions of $(d+1)ν$ having only parts of siz…
We study pattern avoidance by combinatorial objects other than permutations, namely by ordered partitions of an integer and by permutations of a multiset. In the former case we determine the generating function explicitly, for integer compositions of n that avoid a given pattern of length 3 and we show that the answer is the same for all such patterns. We also show that the number of multiset permutations that avoid a given three-letter pattern is the same for all such patterns, thereby extending and refining earlier results of Albert, Aldred et al., and by Atkinson, Walker and Linton. Further…
Five simple guidelines are proposed to compute the generating function for the nonnegative integer solutions of a system of linear inequalities. In contrast to other approaches, the emphasis is on deriving recurrences. We show how to use the guidelines strategically to solve some nontrivial enumeration problems in the theory of partitions and compositions. This includes a strikingly different approach to lecture hall-type theorems, with new $q$-series identities arising in the process. For completeness, we prove that the guidelines suffice to find the generating function for any system of homo…
The convex hull of n+1 affinely independent vertices of the unit n-cube Cn is called a 0/1-simplex. It is nonobtuse if none its dihedral angles is obtuse, and acute if additionally none of them is right. In terms of linear algebra, acute 0/1-simplices in Cn can be described by nonsingular 0/1-matrices P of size n x n whose Gramians have an inverse that is strictly diagonally dominant, with negative off-diagonal entries. The first part of this paper deals with giving a detailed description of how to efficiently compute, by means of a computer program, a representative from each orbit of an acut…
In this paper, we study the Wilf-type equivalence relations among multiset permutations. We identify all multiset equivalences among pairs of patterns consisting of a pattern of length three and another pattern of length at most four. To establish our results, we make use of a variety of techniques, including Ferrers-equivalence arguments, sorting by minimal/maximal letters, analysis of active sites and direct bijections. In several cases, our arguments may be extended to prove multiset equivalences for infinite families of pattern pairs. Our results apply equally well to the Wilf-type classif…
Tutte founded the theory of enumeration of planar maps in a series of papers in the 1960s. Rooted non-separable planar maps are in bijection with West-2-stack-sortable permutations, beta(1,0)-trees introduced by Cori, Jacquard and Schaeffer in 1997, as well as a family of permutations defined by the avoidance of two four letter patterns. In this paper we give upper and lower bounds on the number of multiple-edge-free rooted non-separable planar maps. We also use the bijection between rooted non-separable planar maps and a certain class of permutations, found by Claesson, Kitaev and Steingrimss…
In particular, we are interested in the number of classes created in $S_n$ by each relation and in characterizing these classes. Imposing the condition that the partition o…
A recurrent formula is presented, for the enumeration of the compositions of positive integers as sums over multisets of positive integers, that closely resembles Euler's recurrence based on the pentagonal numbers, but where the coefficients result from a discrete integration of Euler's coefficients. Both a bijective proof and one based on generating functions show the equivalence of the subject recurrences.
