We first develop a general theory of Johnson filtrations and Johnson homomorphisms for a group $G$ acting on another group $K$ equipped with a filtration indexed by a "good" ordered commutative monoid. Then, specializing it to the case where the monoid is the additive monoid $\mathbb{N}^2$ of pairs on nonnegative integers, we obtain a theory of double Johnson filtrations and homomorphisms. We apply this theory to the mapping class group $\mathcal{M}$ of a surface $Σ_{g,1}$ with one boundary component, equipped with the normal subgroups $\bar{X}$, $\bar{Y}$ of $π_1(Σ_{g,1})$ associated to a standard Heegaard splitting of the $3$-sphere. We also consider the case where the group $G$ is the automorphism group of a free group.
We prove that every term of the lower central series and Johnson filtrations of the Torelli subgroups of the mapping class group and the automorphism group of a free group is finitely generated in a linear stable range. This was originally proved for the second terms by Ershov and He.

For k >= 1, let Torelli_g^1(k) be the k-th term in the Johnson filtration of the mapping class group of a genus g surface with one boundary component. We prove that for all k, there exists some G_k >= 0 such that Torelli_g^1(k) is generated by elements which are supported on subsurfaces whose genus is at most G_k. We also prove similar theorems for the Johnson filtration of Aut(F_n) and for certain mod-p analogues of the Johnson filtrations of both the mapping class group and of Aut(F_n). The main tools used in the proofs are the related theories of FI-modules (due to the first author together…
The Johnson filtration of the mapping class group of a compact, oriented surface is the descending series consisting of the kernels of the actions on the nilpotent quotients of the fundamental group of the surface. Each term of the Johnson filtration admits a Johnson homomorphism, whose kernel is the next term in the filtration. In this paper, we consider a general situation where a group acts on a group with a filtration called an "extended N-series". We develop a theory of Johnson homomorphisms in this general setting, including many known variants of the original Johnson homomorphisms as we…
Answering a question of Farb-Leininger-Margalit, we give explicit lower bounds for the dilatations of pseudo-Anosov mapping classes lying in the kth term of the Johnson filtration of the mapping class group.
Let $Σ$ be a compact connected oriented surface with one boundary component and let $\mathcal{M}$ denote the mapping class group of $Σ$. By considering the action of $\mathcal{M}$ on the fundamental group of $Σ$ it is possible to define different filtrations of $\mathcal{M}$ together with some homomorphisms on each term of the filtration. The aim of this paper is twofold. Firstly we study a filtration of $\mathcal{M}$ introduced recently by Habiro and Massuyeau, whose definition involves a handlebody bounded by $Σ$. We shall call it the "alternative Johnson filtration", and the corresponding h…
Let A denote either the automorphism group of the free group of rank n>=4 or the mapping class group of an orientable surface of genus n>=12 with at most 1 boundary component, and let G be either the subgroup of IA-automorphisms or the Torelli subgroup of A, respectively. For a natural number N denote by G_N the Nth term of the lower central series of G. We prove that (i) any subgroup of G containing [G,G] (in particular, the Johnson kernel in the mapping class group case) is finitely generated; (ii) if N=2 or n>=8N-4 and K is any subgroup of G containing G_N (for instance, K can be the Nth te…
We define trace-like operators on a subspace of the space of derivations of the free Lie algebra generated by the first homology group $H$ of a surface $Σ$. This definition depends on the choice of a Lagrangian of $H$, and we call these operators the \emph{Lagrangian traces}. We suppose that $Σ$ is the boundary of a handlebody with first homology group $H'$, and we show that the Lagrangian traces corresponding to the Lagrangian $\operatorname{Ker} (H \rightarrow H')$ vanish on the image by the Johnson homomorphisms of the elements of the Johnson filtration that extend to the handlebody.
We construct a series of homomorphisms from the $Y$-filtration on the monoid of homology cylinders to torsion modules via the mod $\mathbb{Z}$ reduction of the LMO functor. The restriction of our homomorphism to the lower central series of the Torelli group does not factor through Morita's refinement of the Johnson homomorphism. We use it to show that the abelianization of the Johnson kernel of a closed surface has torsion elements. We also determine the third graded quotient $Y_3\mathcal{IC}_{g,1}/Y_4$ of the $Y$-filtration.
We let the mapping class group $Γ_{g,1}$ of a genus $g$ surface $Σ_{g,1}$ with one boundary component act on the homology $H_*(F_{n}(Σ_{g,1});\mathbb{Q})$ of the $n^{th}$ ordered configuration space of the surface. We prove that the action is non-trivial when restricted to the $(n-1)^{st}$ stage of the Johnson filtration, for all $n\ge 1$ and $g\ge 2$. We deduce an analogous result for closed surfaces.
Let M denote the mapping class group of S, a compact connected oriented surface with one boundary component. The action of M on the nilpotent quotients of the fundamental group of S allows to define the so-called Johnson filtration and the Johnson homomorphisms. J. Levine introduced a new filtration of M, called the Lagrangian filtration. He also introduced a version of the Johnson homomorphisms for this new filtration. The first term of the Lagrangian filtration is the Lagrangian mapping class group, whose definition involves a handlebody bounded by S, and which contains the Torelli group. Th…
Let $F_n(Σ_{g,1})$ denote the configuration space of $n$ ordered points on the surface $Σ_{g,1}$ and let $Γ_{g,1}$ denote the mapping class group of $Σ_{g,1}$. We prove that the action of $Γ_{g,1}$ on $H_i(F_n(Σ_{g,1});\mathbb{Z})$ is trivial when restricted to the $i^{th}$ stage of the Johnson filtration $\mathcal{J}(i)\subset Γ_{g,1}$. We give examples showing that $\mathcal{J}(2)$ acts nontrivially on $H_3(F_3(Σ_{g,1}))$ for $g\ge 2$, and provide two new conceptual reinterpretations of a certain group introduced by Moriyama.
The homology cobordism group of homology cylinders is a generalization of both the mapping class group of surfaces and the string link concordance group. We consider extensions of Johnson homomorphisms of a mapping class group, Milnor invariants and Orr invariants of links to homology cylinders, all of which are related to free nilpotent groups. We establish a combined filtration via kernels of extended Johnson homomorphisms and extended Milnor invariants. We determine its image under the three invariants, and investigate relations among the invariants, and relations of the filtration to autom…
We propose an approach to study non-Abelian Iwasawa theory, using the idea of Johnson homomorphisms in low dimensional topology. We introduce arithmetic analogues of Johnson homomorphisms/maps, called the p-Johnson homomorphisms/maps, associated to the Zassenhaus filtration of a pro-p Galois group over a Z_p-extension of a number field. We give their cohomological interpretation in terms of Massey products in Galois cohomology.
The main goal of this note is to provide evidence that the first rational homology of the Johnson subgroup $K_{g,1}$ of the mapping class group of a genus g surface with one marked point is finite-dimensional. Building on work of Dimca-Papadima, we use symplectic representation theory to show that, for all $g > 3$, the completion of $H_1(K_{g,1},\mathbb{Q})$ with respect to the augmentation ideal in the rational group algebra of $\mathbb{Z}^{2g}$ is finite-dimensional. We also show that the terms of the Johnson filtration of the mapping class group have infinite-dimensional rational homology i…
We give a new proof of a celebrated theorem of Dennis Johnson that asserts that the kernel of the Johnson homomorphism on the Torelli subgroup of the mapping class group is generated by separating twists. In fact, we prove a more general result that also applies to "subsurface Torelli groups". Using this, we extend Johnson's calculation of the rational abelianization of the Torelli group not only to the subsurface Torelli groups, but also to finite-index subgroups of the Torelli group that contain the kernel of the Johnson homomorphism.

Calculating the image of the second Johnson-Morita representation
This article first answers to questions about connectedness of a new family of graphs on unicellular maps. Answering these questions goes through a description of the mapping class group as surgeries on unicellular maps. We also show how unicellular maps encode subgroups of the mapping group and provide filtrations of the mapping class group. These facts add a layer on the ubiquitous character of unicellular maps.
We show, finitely generated rational $\mathsf{VIC}_{\mathbb Q}$-modules and $\mathsf{SI}_{\mathbb Q}$-modules are uniformly representation stable and all their submodules are finitely generated. We use this to prove two conjectures of Church and Farb, which state that the quotients of the lower central series of the Torelli subgroups of $\mathrm{Aut}(F_n)$ and $\mathrm{Mod}(Σ_{g,1})$ are uniformly representation stable as sequences of representations of the general linear groups and the symplectic groups, respectively. Furthermore we prove an analogous statement for their Johnson filtrations.
We show that the detection of geometric intersection in an arbitrary representation of the mapping class group of surface implies the injectivity of that representation up to center, and vice versa. As an application, we discuss the geometric intersection in the Johnson filtration. Also, we further consider the problem of detecting the geometric intersection between separating simple closed curves in a representation.
In [ES2], the first and the third authors introduced new classes in the Johnson cokernels of the mapping class groups of surfaces by a representation theoretic approach based on some previous results for the Johnson cokernels of the automorphism groups of free groups. On the other hand, in [KK1], Kawazumi and the second author introduced another type of classes by a topological consideration of self-intersections of curves on a surface. In this paper, we show that the classes found in [KK1] are contained in the classes found in [ES2] in a stable range. Furthermore, we prove that the anti-Morit…
The homology cobordism group of homology cylinders is a generalization of the mapping class group and the string link concordance group. We study this group and its filtrations by subgroups by developing new homomorphisms. First, we define extended Milnor invariants by combining the ideas of Milnor's link invariants and Johnson homomorphisms. They give rise to a descending filtration of the homology cobordism group of homology cylinders. We show that each successive quotient of the filtration is free abelian of finite rank. Second, we define Hirzebruch-type intersection form defect invariants …
Let $Γ$ be either the mapping class group of a closed surface of genus $\geq 2$, or the automorphism group of a free group of rank $\geq 3$. Given any homological representation $ρ$ of $Γ$ corresponding to a finite cover, and any term $\mathcal{I}_k$ of the Johnson filtration, we show that $ρ(\mathcal{I}_k)$ has finite index in $ρ(\mathcal{I})$, the Torelli subgroup of $Γ$. Since $[\mathcal{I}: \mathcal{I}_k] = \infty$ for $k > 1$, this implies for instance that no such representation is faithful.
We prove that various subgroups of the mapping class group $Mod(Σ)$ of a surface $Σ$ are at least exponentially distorted. Examples include the Torelli group (answering a question of Hamenstadt), the "point-pushing" and surface braid subgroups, and the Lagrangian subgroup. Our techniques include a method to compute lower bounds on distortion via representation theory and an extension of Johnson theory to arbitrary subgroups of $H_1(Σ;\mathbb{Z})$.
