We define new bordism and spin bordism invariants of certain subgroups of the mapping class group of a surface. In particular, they are invariants of the Johnson filtration of the mapping class group. The second and third terms of this filtration are the well-known Torelli group and Johnson subgroup, respectively. We introduce a new representation in terms of spin bordism, and we prove that this single representation contains all of the information given by the Johnson homomorphism, the Birman-Craggs homomorphism, and the Morita homomorphism.
We construct invariants of colored links using equivariant bordism groups of Conner and Floyd. We employ this bordism invariant to find the first examples of topological vortex knots, the knot structure of which is protected from decaying via topologically allowed local surgeries, i.e., by reconnections and strand crossings permitted by the topology of the vortex-supporting medium. Moreover, we show that, up to the aforementioned local surgeries, each tricolored link either decays into unlinked simple loops, or can be transformed into either a left-handed or a right-handed tricolored trefoil k…

We construct geometric generators of the effective $S^1$-equivariant Spin- (and oriented) bordism groups with two inverted. We apply this construction to the question of which $S^1$-manifolds admit invariant metrics of positive scalar curvature. It turns out that, up to taking connected sums with several copies of the same manifold, the only obstruction to the existence of such a metric is an $\hat{A}$-genus of orbit spaces. This $\hat{A}$-genus generalizes a previous definition of Lott for orbit spaces of semi-free $S^1$-actions. As a further application of our results, we give a new proof of…
In this paper, we define a relative $L^2$-$ρ$-invariant for Dirac operators on odd-dimensional spin manifolds with boundary and show that they are invariants of the bordism classes of positive scalar curvature metrics which are collared near the boundary. As an application, we show that if a $4k+3$-dimensional spin manifold with boundary admits such a metric and if, roughly speaking, there exists a torsion element in the difference of the fundamental groups of the manifold and its boundary, then there are infinitely many bordism classes of such psc metrics on the given manifold. This result in…
A geometric characterization of the Arf invariant of a knot in the 3-sphere is given in terms of two kinds of 4-dimensional bordisms, half-gropes and Whitney towers. These types of bordisms have associated complexities class and order which filter the condition of bordism by an embedded annulus, i.e. knot concordance, and it is shown constructively that the Arf invariant is exactly the obstruction to cobording pairs of knots by half-gropes and Whitney towers of arbitrarily high class and order. This illustrates geometrically how, in the setting of knot concordance, the Vassiliev (isotopy) inva…
The goal of this paper is to study the Pontrjagin dual of (reduced) 4-dimensional Spin bordism. That is to say, we consider the functor from the category of topological spaces to the category of compact abelian groups that associates to each space X the compact group of homomorphisms from the reduced 4-dimensional Spin bordism of X to the circle. In a previous paper, we studied the analogous problem for 3-dimensional Spin bordism. Our work was motivated by some questions from physics. The physicists are primarily interested in the case when X is the classifying space of a finite group, but our…
The groups of link bordism can be identified with homotopy groups via the Pontryagin-Thom construction. B.J. Sanderson computed the bordism group of 3 component surface-links using the Hilton-Milnor Theorem, and later gave a geometric interpretation of the groups in terms of intersections of Seifert hypersurfaces and their framings. In this paper, we geometrically represent every element of the bordism group uniquely by a certain standard form of a surface-link, a generalization of a Hopf link. The standard forms give rise to an inverse of Sanderson's geometrically defined invariant.
The ambient framed bordism class of the connecting manifold of two consecutive critical points of a Morse-Smale function is estimated by means of a certain Hopf invariant. Applications include new examples of non-smoothable Poincare duality spaces as well as an extension of the Morse complex.
We develop a geometric approach to stable homotopy groups of spheres in the spirit of the work of Pontrjagin and Rokhlin. A new proof of the Hopf Invariant One Theorem by J.F.Adams is obtained in all dimensions except 15 and 31. To prove that the stable Hopf invariant H: Π_n \to Z/2 vanishes for n>31, we apply methods of geometric topology. The Pontrjagin-Thom construction along with Hirsch's compression lemma identify every α\in Π_n with the framed bordism class of a framed immersion of a closed n-manifold into R^{n+k}, for any given k>0. Its self-intersection M projects to an immersion f: M …
The pair (K,r) consisting of a knot K and a surjective map r from the knot group onto a dihedral group is said to be a p-colored knot. D. Moskovich conjectured that for any odd prime p there are exactly p equivalence classes of p-colored knots up to surgery along unknots in the kernel of the coloring. We show that there are at most 2p equivalence classes. This is a vast improvement upon the previous results by Moskovich for p=3, and 5, with no upper bound given in general. T. Cochran, A. Gerges, and K. Orr, in "Dehn surgery equivalence relations of 3-manifolds", define invariants of the surger…
We obtain complete geometric invariants of cobordism classes of oriented simple fold maps of (n+1)-dimensional manifolds into an n-dimensional manifold N in terms of immersions with prescribed normal bundles. We compute that this cobordism group of simple fold maps is isomorphic to the direct sum of the (n-1)th stable homotopy group of spheres and the (n-1)th stable homotopy group of the infinite dimensional projective space. By using geometric invariants defined in the author's earlier works, we also describe the natural map of the simple fold cobordism group to the fold cobordism group by na…
In classical fixed point and coincidence theory the notion of Nielsen numbers has proved to be extremely fruitful. We extend it to pairs (f_1,f_2) of maps between manifolds of arbitrary dimensions, using nonstabilized normal bordism theory as our main tool. This leads to estimates of the minimum numbers MCC(f_1,f_2) (and MC(f_1,f_2), respectively) of path components (and of points, resp.) in the coincidence sets of those pairs of maps which are homotopic to (f_1,f_2). Furthermore, we deduce finiteness conditions for MC(f_1,f_2). As an application we compute both minimum numbers explicitly in v…
This paper aims to consider algebraic structures of quandles defined over a hyperboloid of one sheet and compute the related longitudinal mapping for $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$.
We show an equivariant bordism principle for constructing metrics of positive scalar curvature that are invariant under a given group action. Furthermore, we develop a new codimension-2 surgery technique which removes singular strata from fixed point free $S^1$-manifolds while preserving equivariant positive scalar curvature. These results are applied to derive the following generalization of a result of Gromov and Lawson: Each closed fixed point free $S^1$-manifold of dimension at least 6 whose isotropy groups have odd order and whose union of maximal orbits is simply connected and not spin c…
In this paper, we discuss relations among several invariants of 3-manifolds including Meyer's function, the eta-invariant, the von Neumann rho-invariant and the Casson invariant from the viewpoint of the mapping class group of a surface.
We determine the center of a meta-nilpotent quotient of a mapping-torus group. As a corollary, we introduce two invariants, which are quadratic forms, of knots and of mapping classes.
Parity mappings from the chords of a Gauss diagram to the integers is defined. The parity of the chords is used to construct families of invariants of Gauss diagrams and virtual knots. One family consists of degree $n$ Vassiliev invariants.
A strategy for constructing an embedded sphere in a 4-manifold realizing a given homology class which has been successfully applied in the past is to represent the class as a first step stably by an embedded sphere, i.e. after adding products of 2-spheres, and to move that sphere back into the original manifold. In this paper, we study under what conditions the first step of this approach can be carried out if the 4-manifold at hand is not simply connected. One of our main results is that there are - apart from the well known Arf invariant - additional bordism theoretical obstructions to stabl…
In this paper, we study a series of $L^2$-torsion invariants from the viewpoint of the mapping class group of a surface. We establish some vanishing theorems for them. Moreover we explicitly calculate the first two invariants and compare them with hyperbolic volumes.
The knot coloring polynomial defined by Eisermann for a finite pointed group is generalized to an infinite pointed group as the longitudinal mapping invariant of a knot. In turn this can be thought of as a generalization of the quandle 2-cocycle invariant for finite quandles. If the group is a topological group then this invariant can be thought of a topological generalization of the 2-cocycle invariant. The longitudinal mapping invariant is based on a meridian-longitude pair in the knot group. We also give an interpretation of the invariant in terms of quandle colorings of a 1-tangle for gene…
Let $S$ be a closed Riemann surface of genus $p>1$ with one point removed. In this paper, we identify those point-pushing pseudo-Anosov maps on $S$ that preserve at least one bi-infinite geodesic in the curve complex.
We formulate a family of spin Topological Quantum Filed Theories (spin-TQFTs) as fermionic generalization of bosonic Dijkgraaf-Witten TQFTs. They are obtained by gauging $G$-equivariant invertible spin-TQFTs, or, in physics language, gauging the interacting fermionic Symmetry Protected Topological states (SPTs) with a finite group $G$ symmetry. We use the fact that the latter are classified by Pontryagin duals to spin-bordism groups of the classifying space $BG$. We also consider unoriented analogues, that is $G$-equivariant invertible pin$^\pm$-TQFTs (fermionic time-reversal-SPTs) and their g…
In the study of the relation between the mapping class group M of a surface and the theory of finite-type invariants of homology 3-spheres, three subgroups of the mapping class group play a large role. They are the Torelli group, the Johnson subgroup K and a new subgroup L, which contains K, defined by a choice of a Lagrangian subgroup of the homology of the surface. In this work we determine the quotient L/K, in terms of the precise description of M/K given by Johnson and Morita. We also study the lower central series of L and K, using some natural imbeddings of the pure braid group in L and …
We compare two different types of mapping class invariants: the Hochschild homology of an $A_\infty$ bimodule coming from bordered Heegaard Floer homology, and fixed point Floer cohomology. We first compute the bimodule invariants and their Hochschild homology in the genus two case. We then compare the resulting computations to fixed point Floer cohomology, and make a conjecture that the two invariants are isomorphic. We also discuss a construction of a map potentially giving the isomorphism. It comes as an open-closed map in the context of a surface being viewed as a $0$-dimensional Lefschetz…
We compute the mapping class group orbits in the homotopy set of framings of a compact connected oriented surface with non-empty boundary. In the case $g > 1$ the computation is some modification of Johnson's results and certain arguments on the Arf invariant, while we need an extra invariant for the genus $1$ case. In addition, we discuss how this invariant behaves in the relative case, which Randal-Williams studied for $g > 1$.
We show that, if g is more than or equal to 2, the virtual cohomological dimension of the mapping class group of a 3-dimensional handlebody of genus g is equal to 4g-5 and the Euler number of it is equal to 0.
In a recent paper we defined a new filtration of the mapping class group--the "Lagrangian" filtration. We here determine the successive quotients of this filtration, up to finite index. As an application we show that, for any additive invariant of finite-type (e.g. the Casson invariant), and any level of the Lagrangian filtration, there is a homology 3-sphere which has a Heegaard decomposition whose gluing diffeomorphism lies at that level, on which this invariant is non-zero. In a final section we examine the relationship between the Johnson and Lagrangian filtrations.
Let $G$ be the mapping torus of a polynomially growing automorphism of a finitely generated free group. We determine which epimorphisms from $G$ to $\mathbb{Z}$ have finitely generated kernel, and we compute the rank of the kernel. We thus describe all possible ways of expressing $G$ as the mapping torus of a free group automorphism. This is similar to the case for 3--manifold groups, and different from the case of mapping tori of exponentially growing free group automorphisms. The proof uses a hierarchical decomposition of $G$ and requires determining the Bieri-Neumann-Strebel invariant of th…
We give new tools for homotopy Brouwer theory. In particular, we describe a canonical reducing set (the set of "walls") which splits the plane into maximal translation areas and irreducible areas. We then focus on Brouwer mapping classes relatively to four orbits and describe them explicitly by adding to Handel's diagram and to the set of walls a "tangle", which is essentially an isotopy class of simple closed curves in the cylinder minus two points.
We consider random walks on the mapping class group whose support generates a non-elementary subgroup and contains a pseudo-Anosov map whose invariant Teichmüller geodesic is in the principal stratum. For such random walks, we show that mapping classes along almost every infinite sample path are eventually pseudo-Anosov, with invariant Teichmüller geodesics in the principal stratum. This provides an answer to a question of Kapovich and Pfaff.
This is the second in a series of papers studying the relationship between Rohlin's theorem and gauge theory. We discuss an invariant of a homology S^1 cross S^3 defined by Furuta and Ohta as an analogue of Casson's invariant for homology 3-spheres. Our main result is a calculation of the Furuta-Ohta invariant for the mapping torus of a finite-order diffeomorphism of a homology sphere. The answer is the equivariant Casson invariant (Collin-Saveliev 2001) if the action has fixed points, and a version of the Boyer-Nicas (1990) invariant if the action is free. We deduce, for finite-order mapping …
We show that the periodic $η$-invariants introduced by Mrowka--Ruberman--Saveliev~\cite{MRS3} provide obstructions to the existence of cobordisms with positive scalar curvature metrics between manifolds of dimensions $4$ and $6$. The proof combines a relative version of the Schoen--Yau minimal surface technique with an end-periodic index theorem for the Dirac operator. As a result, we show that the bordism groups $Ω^{spin,+}_{n+1}(S^1 \times BG)$ are infinite for any non-trivial group $G$ which is the fundamental group of a spin spherical space form of dimension $n=3$ or $5$.
We identify the leading order term of the asymptotic expansion of the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants for finite order mapping tori with classical invariants for all simple and simply-connected compact Lie groups. The square root of the Reidemeister torsion is used as a density on the moduli space of flat connections and the leading order term is identified with the integral over this moduli space of this density weighted by a certain phase for each component of the moduli space. We also identify this phase in terms of classical invariants such as Chern-Simons invariants, eta invariants, …
Given a set equipped with a transitive action of a group, we define the notion of an almost invariant coloring of the set. We consider the mapping class group orbit of a multicurve on a compact surface, and prove that in the case of genus at least two, no such almost invariant coloring exists. Conversely, in the case of a closed torus, one may find almost invariant colorings using arbitrarily many colors.
We state Asymptotic Expansion and Growth Rate conjectures for the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants of arbitrary framed links in 3-manifolds, and we prove these conjectures for the natural links in mapping tori of finite-order automorphisms of marked surfaces. Our approach is based upon geometric quantisation of the moduli space of parabolic bundles on the surface, which we show coincides with the construction of the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants using conformal field theory, as was recently completed by Andersen and Ueno.
We study the effect of the mapping class group of a reducible 3-manifold $M$ on each incompressible surface that is invariant under a self-homeomorphism of $M$. As an application of this study we answer a question of F. Rodriguez Hertz, M. Rodriguez Hertz and R. Ures: A reducible 3-manifold admits an Anosov torus if and only if one of its prime summands is either the 3-torus, the mapping torus of $-id$, or the mapping torus of a hyperbolic automorphism.
