We consider small perturbations of a conformal iterated function system (CIFS) produced by either adding or removing some generators with small derivative from the original. We establish a formula, utilizing transfer operators arising from the thermodynamic formalism à la Sinai--Ruelle--Bowen, which may be solved to express the Hausdorff dimension of the perturbed limit set in series form: either exactly, or as an asymptotic expansion. Significant applications include strengthening Hensley's asymptotic formula from 1992, which improved on earlier bounds due to Jarník and Kurzweil, for the Hausdorff dimension of the set of real numbers whose continued fraction expansion partial quotients are all $\leq N$; as well as its counterpart for reals whose partial quotients are all $\geq N$ due to Good from 1941.
To the Renyi or backward continued fraction transformation we associate a parabolic iterated function system whose limit set has Hausdorff dimension 1. We show that the Texan Conjecture holds, i.e. for every t in1] there exists a subsystem whose limit set has Hausdorff dimension t
We consider the family of CIFSs of generalized complex continued fractions with a complex parameter space. This is a new interesting example to which we can apply a general theory of infinite CIFSs and analytic families of infinite CIFSs. We show that the Hausdorff dimension function of the family of the CIFSs of generalized complex continued fractions is continuous in the parameter space and is real-analytic and subharmonic in the interior of the parameter space. As a corollary of these results, we also show that the Hausdorff dimension function has a maximum point and the maximum point belon…
We study the Hausdorff measures of limit sets of weakly controlled Moran constructions in metric spaces. The separation of the construction pieces is closely related to the Hausdorff measure of the corresponding limit set. In particular, we investigate different separation conditions for semiconformal iterated function systems. Our work generalizes well known results on self-similar sets in metric spaces as well as results on controlled Moran constructions in Euclidean spaces.
The increasing rate of the Birkhoff sums in the infinite iterated function systems with polynomial decay of the derivative (for example the Gauss map) is studied. For different unbounded potential functions, the Hausdorff dimensions of the sets of points whose Birkhoff sums share the same increasing rate are obtained.
The aim of the present paper is twofold. We study directed porosity in connection with conformal iterated function systems (CIFS) and with singular integrals. We prove that limit sets of finite CIFS are porous in a stronger sense than already known. Furthermore we use directed porosity to establish that truncated singular integral operators, with respect to general Radon measures $μ$ and kernels $K$, converge weakly in some dense subspaces of $L^2(μ)$ when the support of $μ$ belongs to a broad family of sets. This class contains many fractal sets like CIFS's limit sets.
In this article, we study the Hausdorff measure of shrinking target sets on self-conformal sets. The Hausdorff dimension of the sets we are interested in here was established by Hill and Velani in 1995. However, until recently, little more was known about the Hausdorff measure of these particular sets. In this paper we provide a complete characterisation of the Hausdorff measure of these sets, obtaining a dichotomy for the Hausdorff measure which is determined by the convergence or divergence of a sum depending on the radii of our "shrinking targets". Our main result complements earlier work o…
The Hausdorff dimension of a conformal repeller or conformal hyperbolic set is well understood. For non-conformal maps, the Hausdorff dimension is only known in some special cases. Ban, Cao and Hu defined the concept of an average conformal repeller which generalises conformal, quasi-conformal and weakly conformal repellers, and they found an equation for the Hausdorff dimension for an average conformal repeller. In this paper we generalise this concept to average conformal hyperbolic sets, and obtain a similar equation for the Hausdorff dimension.
We consider infinite iterated function systems $\{f_i\}_{i=1}^{\infty}$ on $[0,1]$ with a polynomially increasing contraction rate. We look at subsets of such systems where we only allow iterates $f_{i_1}\circ f_{i_2}\circ f_{i_3}\circ...$ if $i_n>Φ(i_{n-1})$ for certain increasing functions $Φ:\mathbb{N}\rightarrow\mathbb{N}$. We compute both the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of such sets. Our results generalize work of Ramharter which shows that the set of continued fractions with strictly increasing digits has Hausdorff dimension 1/2.
The quantization dimension function for an $F$-conformal measure $m_F$ generated by an infinite conformal iterated function system satisfying the strong open set condition and by a summable Hölder family of functions is expressed by a simple formula involving the temperature function of the system. The temperature function is commonly used to perform the multifractal analysis, in our context of the measure $m_F$. The result in this paper extends a similar result of Lindsay and Mauldin established for finite conformal iterated function systems [Nonlinearity 15 (2002)].
We prove a quantitative distortion theorem for iterated function systems that generate sets of continued fractions. As a consequence, we obtain upper and lower bounds on the Hausdorff dimension of any set of real or complex continued fractions. These bounds are solutions to Moran-type equations in the convergents that can be easily implemented in a computer algebra system.
The dimension spectrum of a conformal iterated function system (CIFS) is the set of all Hausdorff dimensions of its various subsystem limit sets. This brief note provides two constructions -- (i) a compact perfect set that cannot be realized as the dimension spectrum of a CIFS; and (ii) a similarity IFS whose dimension spectrum has zero Hausdorff dimension, and thus is not uniformly perfect -- which resolve questions posed by Chousionis, Leykekhman, and Urbański, and go on provoke fresh conjectures and questions regarding the topological and metric properties of IFS dimension spectra.
In a previous paper, dealing with "Applications in $\mathbb{R}^1$," the authors developed a new approach to the computation of the Hausdorff dimension of the invariant set of an iterated function system or IFS and studied some applications in one dimension. The key idea, which has been known in varying degrees of generality for many years, is to associate to the IFS a parametrized family of positive, linear, Perron-Frobenius operators $L_s$. In our context, $L_s$ is studied in a space of $C^m$ functions and is not compact. Nevertheless, it is has a strictly positive $C^m$ eigenfunction $v_s$ w…
We consider a generalisation of the self-affine iterated function systems of Lalley and Gatzouras by allowing for a countable infinity of non-conformal contractions. It is shown that the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set is equal to the supremum of the dimensions of compactly supported ergodic measures. In addition we consider the multifractal analysis for countable families of potentials. We obtain a conditional variational principle for the level sets.
Given a finite set $\mathcal{A} \subseteq \mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ we study the dimension of the attractor $K_\mathcal{A}$ of the iterated function system induced by the projective action of $\mathcal{A}$. In particular, we generalise a recent result of Solomyak and Takahashi by showing that the Hausdorff dimension of $K_\mathcal{A}$ is given by the minimum of 1 and the critical exponent, under the assumption that $\mathcal{A}$ satisfies certain discreteness conditions and a Diophantine property. Our approach combines techniques from the theories of iterated function systems and Möbius semig…
We prove that the Hausdorff dimension of an average conformal repeller is stable under random perturbations. Our perturbation model uses the notion of a bundle random dynamical system.
In this paper, we consider two dynamical systems associated to the nearest integer continued fraction, and show that both of them have full Hausdorff dimension spectrum.
In this paper we investigate aspects of rigidity and flexibility for conformal iterated function systems. For the case in which the systems are not essentially affine we show that two such systems are conformal equivalent if and only if in each of their Lyapunov spectra there exists at least one level set such that the corresponding Gibbs measures coincide. We then proceed by comparing this result with the essentially affine situation. We show that essentially affine systems are far less rigid than non--essentially affine systems, and subsequently we then investigate the extent of their flexib…
We investigate the Hausdorff measure and content on a class of quasi self-similar sets that include, for example, graph-directed and sub self-similar and self-conformal sets. We show that any Hausdorff measurable subset of such a set has comparable Hausdorff measure and Hausdorff content. In particular, this proves that graph-directed and sub self-conformal sets with positive Hausdorff measure are Ahlfors regular, irrespective of separation conditions. When restricting to self-conformal subsets of the real line with Hausdorff dimension strictly less than one, we additionally show that the weak…
We produce an upper bound for the Hausdorff dimension of the graph of a Weierstrass-type function. Whilst strictly weaker than existing results, it has the advantage of being directly computable from the theory of hyperbolic iterated function systems.
We consider iterated function systems on the real line that consist of continuous, piecewise linear functions. Under a mild separation condition, we show that the Hausdorff and box dimensions of the attractor are equal to the minimum of 1 and the exponent which comes from the most natural system of covers of the attractor.
We study fast approximation of integrals with respect to stationary probability measures associated to iterated functions systems on the unit interval. We provide an algorithm for approximating the integrals under certain conditions on the iterated function system and on the function that is being integrated. We apply this technique to estimate Hausdorff moments, Wasserstein distances and Lyapunov exponents of stationary probability measures.
In this paper we propose a new model of random graph directed fractals that extends the current well-known model of random graph directed iterated function systems, $V$-variable attractors, and fractal and Mandelbrot percolation. We study its dimensional properties for similarities with and without overlaps. In particular we show that for the two classes of $1$-variable and $\infty$-variable random graph directed attractors we introduce, the Hausdorff and upper box counting dimension coincide almost surely, irrespective of overlap. Under the additional assumption of the uniform strong separati…
We study the smoothness of the stationary measure with respect to smooth perturbations of the iterated function scheme and the weight functions that define it. Our main theorems relate the smoothness of the perturbation of: the iterated function scheme and the weight functions; to the smoothness of the perturbation of the stationary measure. The results depend on the smoothness of: the iterated function scheme and the weights functions; and the space on which the stationary measure acts as a linear operator. As a consequence we also obtain the smoothness of the Hausdorff dimension of the limit…
We study non-autonomous conformal iterated function systems, with finite or countably infinite alphabet alike. These differ from the usual (autonomous) iterated function systems in that the contractions applied at each step in time are allowed to vary. (In the case where all maps are affine similarities, the resulting system is also called a "Moran set construction".) We shall show that, given a suitable restriction on the growth of the number of contractions used at each step, the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set of such a system is determined by an equation known as Bowen's formula. We a…
We study probabilistic iterated function systems (IFS), consisting of a finite or infinite number of average-contracting bi-Lipschitz maps on R^d. If our strong open set condition is also satisfied, we show that both upper and lower bounds for the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of the invariant measure can be found. Both bounds take on the familiar form of ratio of entropy to the Lyapunov exponent.
We consider the limit set of generalised iterated function systems. Under the assumption of a natural potential, the so called cylinder function, we prove the existence of the invariant probability measure satisfying the equilibrium state. We motivate this approach by showing that for typical self-affine sets there exists an ergodic invariant measure having the same Hausdorff dimension as the set itself.
In this paper, we investigate parameter families of iterated function systems and continuity. Specifically, if we have a set of iterated function systems that depend continuously on a parameter, which properties of the invariant sets will vary continuously? We show here that the invariant sets will vary continuously as a function of the parameter. Furthermore, we give some sufficient conditions under which the Hausdorff dimension will depend continuously on the parameter. Lastly, we give a counter-example where the dimension is not a continuous function of the parameter.
In this paper we prove that among pairs $K,\,K' \subset \mathbb{C}$ of conformal dynamically defined Cantor sets with sum of Hausdorff dimensions $HD(K)+HD(K')>2$, there is an open and dense subset of such pairs verifying $\text{int}(K-K')\neq \emptyset$. This is motivated by the work \cite{MY}, where Moreira and Yoccoz proved a similar statement for dynamically defined Cantor sets in the real line. Here we adapt their argument to the context of conformal Cantor sets in the complex plane, this requires the introduction of several new concepts and a more detailed analysis in some parts of the a…
We investigate multifractal regularity for infinite conformal iterated function systems (cIFS). That is we determine to what extent the multifractal spectrum depends continuously on the cIFS and its thermodynamic potential. For this we introduce the notion of regular convergence for families of cIFS not necessarily sharing the same index set, which guarantees the convergence of the multifractal spectra on the interior of their domain. In particular, we obtain an Exhausting Principle for infinite cIFS allowing us to carry over results for finite to infinite systems, and in this way to establish…
We describe the shrinking target problem for random iterated function systems which semi-conjugate to a random subshifts of finite type. We get the Hausdorff dimension of the set based on shrinking target problems with given targets. The main idea is an extension of ubiquity theorem which plays an important role to get the lower bound of the dimension. Our method can be used to deal with the sets with respect to an more general targets and the sets based on the quantitative Poincaré recurrence properties.
We consider measures which are invariant under a measurable iterated function system with positive, place-dependent probabilities in a separable metric space. We provide an upper bound of the Hausdorff dimension of such a measure if it is ergodic. We also prove that it is ergodic iff the related skew product is.
This paper investigates the dimension theory of some families of continuous piecewise linear iterated function systems. For one family, we show that the Hausdorff dimension of the attractor is equal to the exponential growth rate obtained from the most natural covering system. We also prove that for Lebesgue typical parameters, the 1-dimensional Lebesgue measure of the underlying attractor is positive, if this number is bigger than 1 and all the contraction ratios are positive.
The study of generalized iterated function systems (GIFS) was introduced by Mihail and Miculescu in 2008. We provide a new approach to study those systems as the limit of the Hutchinson-Barnsley setting for infinite iterated function systems (IIFS) which has been developed by many authors in the last years. We show that any attractor of a contractive generalized iterated function system is the limit with respect to Hausdorff-Pompeiu metric of attractors of contractive infinite iterated function systems. We also prove that any Hutchinson measure for a contractive generalized iterated function s…
This paper considers self-conformal iterated function systems (IFSs) on the real line whose first level cylinders overlap. In the space of self-conformal IFSs, we show that generically (in topological sense) if the attractor of such a system has Hausdorff dimension less than $1$ then it has zero appropriate dimensional Hausdorff measure and its Assouad dimension is equal to $1$. Our main contribution is in showing that if the cylinders intersect then the IFS generically does not satisfy the weak separation property and hence, we may apply a recent result of Angelevska, Käenmäki and Troscheit […
In 1988 K. Falconer introduced a formula which predicts the value of the Hausdorff dimension of the attractor of an affine iterated function system. The value given by this formula -- sometimes referred to as the affinity dimension -- is known to agree with the Hausdorff dimension both generically and in an increasing range of explicit cases. It is however a nontrivial problem to estimate the numerical value of the affinity dimension for specific iterated function systems. In this article we substantially extend an earlier result of M. Pollicott and P. Vytnova on the computation of the affinit…
Given an infinite iterated function system (IFS) $\mathcal{F}$, we define its dimension spectrum $D(\mathcal{F})$ to be the set of real numbers which can be realised as the dimension of some subsystem of $\mathcal{F}$. In the case where $\mathcal{F}$ is a conformal IFS, the properties of the dimension spectrum have been studied by several authors. In this paper we investigate for the first time the properties of the dimension spectrum when $\mathcal{F}$ is a non-conformal IFS. In particular, unlike dimension spectra of conformal IFS which are always compact and perfect (by a result of Chousion…
A theoretical approach to computing the Hausdorff dimension of the topological boundary of attractors of iterated function systems is developed. The curve known as the Lévy Dragon is then studied in detail and the Hausdorff dimension of its boundary is computed using the theory developed. The actual computation is a complicated procedure. It involves a great deal of combinatorial topology as well as determining the structure and certain eigenvalues of a $752 \times 752$ matrix. Perron-Frobenius theory plays an important role in analyzing this matrix.
We show that contrary to anticipation suggested by the dictionary between rational maps and Kleinian groups and by the ``hairiness phenomenon'', there exist many Feigenbaum Julia sets $J(f)$ whose Hausdorff dimension is strictly smaller than two. We also prove that for any Feigenbaum Julia set, the Poincaré critical exponent $\de_\crit$ is equal to the hyperbolic dimension $\HD_\hyp(J(f))$. Moreover, if $\area J(f)=0$ then $\HD_\hyp (J(f))=\HD(J(f))$. In the stationary case, the last statement can be reversed: if $\area J(f)> 0$ then $\HD_\hyp (J(f))< 2$. We also give a new construction of con…
Let $E$ be the self-similar set generated by the {\it iterated function system} {\[ f_0(x)=\frac{x}β,\quad f_1(x)=\frac{x+1}β, \quad f_{β+1}=\frac{x+β+1}β \]}with $β\ge 3$. {Then} $E$ is a self-similar set with complete {overlaps}, i.e., $f_{0}\circ f_{β+1}=f_{1}\circ f_1$, but $E$ is not totally self-similar. We investigate all its generating iterated function systems, give the spectrum of $E$, and determine the Hausdorff dimension and Hausdorff measure of $E$ and of the sets which contain all points in $E$ having finite or infinite different triadic codings.
Let $\{S_i\}_{i=1}^\ell$ be an iterated function system (IFS) on $\R^d$ with attractor $K$. Let $(Σ,σ)$ denote the one-sided full shift over the alphabet $\{1,..., \ell\}$. We define the projection entropy function $h_π$ on the space of invariant measures on $Σ$ associated with the coding map $π: Σ\to K$, and develop some basic ergodic properties about it. This concept turns out to be crucial in the study of dimensional properties of invariant measures on $K$. We show that for any conformal IFS (resp., the direct product of finitely many conformal IFS), without any separation condition, the pr…
We study images of equilibrium (Gibbs) states for a class of non-invertible transformations associated to conformal iterated function systems with overlaps $\mathcal S$. We prove exact dimensionality for these image measures, and find a dimension formula using their overlap numbers. In particular, we obtain a geometric formula for the dimension of self-conformal measures for iterated function systems with overlaps, in terms of the overlap numbers. This implies a necessary and sufficient condition for dimension drop. If $ν= π_*μ$ is a self-conformal measure, then $HD(ν) < \frac{h(μ)}{|χ(μ)|}$ i…
The sub-additive pressure function $P(s)$ for an affine iterated function system (IFS) and the affinity dimension, defined as the unique solution $s_0$ to $P(s_0)=1$, were introduced by K. Falconer in his seminal 1988 paper on self-affine fractals. The affinity dimension prescribes a value for the Hausdorff dimension of a self-affine set which is known to be correct in generic cases and in an increasing range of explicit cases. It was shown by Feng and Shmerkin in 2014 that the affinity dimension depends continuously on the IFS. In this article we prove that when the linear parts of the affini…
