This paper considers self-conformal iterated function systems (IFSs) on the real line whose first level cylinders overlap. In the space of self-conformal IFSs, we show that generically (in topological sense) if the attractor of such a system has Hausdorff dimension less than $1$ then it has zero appropriate dimensional Hausdorff measure and its Assouad dimension is equal to $1$. Our main contribution is in showing that if the cylinders intersect then the IFS generically does not satisfy the weak separation property and hence, we may apply a recent result of Angelevska, Käenmäki and Troscheit [BLMS, 2020]. This phenomenon holds for transversal families (in particular for the translation family) typically, in the self-similar case, in both topological and in measure theoretical sense, and in the more general self-conformal case in the topological sense.
We consider the Assouad dimensions of orthogonal projections of planar sets onto lines. Our investigation covers both general and self-similar sets. For general sets, the main result is the following: if a set in the plane has Assouad dimension $s \in [0,2]$, then the projections have Assouad dimension at least $\min\{1,s\}$ almost surely. Compared to the famous analogue for Hausdorff dimension -- namely \emph{Marstrand's Projection Theorem} -- a striking difference is that the words `at least' cannot be dispensed with: in fact, for many planar self-similar sets of dimension $s < 1$, we prove …
Previous study of the Assouad dimension of planar self-affine sets has relied heavily on the underlying IFS having a `grid structure', thus allowing for the use of approximate squares. We study the Assouad dimension of a class of self-affine carpets which do not have an associated grid structure. We find that the Assouad dimension is related to the box and Assouad dimensions of the (self-similar) projection of the self-affine set onto the first coordinate and to the local dimensions of the projection of a natural Bernoulli measure onto the first coordinate. In a special case we relate the Asso…
Let $F \subset \mathbb{R}^{2}$, and let $\dim_{\mathrm{A}}$ stand for Assouad dimension. I prove that $\dim_{\mathrm{A}} π_{e}(F) \geq \min\{\dim_{\mathrm{A}} F,1\}$ for all $e \in S^{1}$ outside of a set of Hausdorff dimension zero. This is a strong variant of Marstrand's projection theorem for Assouad dimension, whose analogue is not true for other common notions of fractal dimension, such as Hausdorff or packing dimension.
It is known that, unlike the Hausdorff dimension, the Assouad dimension of a self-similar set can exceed the similarity dimension if there are overlaps in the construction. Our main result is the following precise dichotomy for self-similar sets in the line: either the \emph{weak separation property} is satisfied, in which case the Hausdorff and Assouad dimensions coincide; or the \emph{weak separation property} is not satisfied, in which case the Assouad dimension is maximal (equal to one). In the first case we prove that the self-similar set is Ahlfors regular, and in the second case we use …
We show that the set defined by digit restrictions contains arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions if and only if its Assouad dimension is one. Moreover, we show that for any $0\le s\le 1$, there exists some set on $\mathbb{R}$ with Hausdorff dimension $s$ whose Fourier dimension is zero and it contains arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions.
The connections between quasi-Assouad dimension and tangents are studied. We apply these results to the calculation of the quasi-Assouad dimension for a class of planar self-affine sets. We also show that sets with decreasing gaps have quasi-Assouad dimension $0$ or $1$ and exhibit an example of a set in the plane whose quasi-Assouad dimension is smaller than that of its projection onto the $x$-axis, showing that quasi-Assouad dimension may increase under Lipschitz mappings. Moreover, for closed sets, we show that the Hausdorff dimension is an upper bound for the lower-Assouad dimension.

We show that self-similar sets arising from iterated function systems that satisfy the Moran open-set condition, a canonical class of fractal sets, are `equi-homogeneous'. This is a regularity property that, roughly speaking, means that at each fixed length-scale any two neighbourhoods of the set have covers of approximately equal cardinality. Self-similar sets are notable in that they are Ahlfors-David regular, which implies that their Assouad and box-counting dimensions coincide. More generally, attractors of non-autonomous iterated functions systems (where maps are allowed to vary between i…
We investigate several aspects of the Assouad dimension and the lower dimension, which together form a natural `dimension pair'. In particular, we compute these dimensions for certain classes of self-affine sets and quasi-self-similar sets and study their relationships with other notions of dimension, like the Hausdorff dimension for example. We also investigate some basic properties of these dimensions including their behaviour regarding unions and products and their set theoretic complexity.
We introduce and study bi-Lipschitz-invariant dimensions that range between the box and Assouad dimensions. The quasi-Assouad dimensions and $θ$-spectrum are other special examples of these intermediate dimensions. These dimensions are localized, like Assouad dimensions, but vary in the depth of scale which is considered, thus they provide very refined geometric information. We investigate the relationship between these and the familiar dimensions. We construct a Cantor set with a non-trivial interval of dimensions, the endpoints of this interval being given by the quasi-Assouad and Assouad di…
Let $\{S_i\}_{i=1}^\ell$ be an iterated function system (IFS) on $\R^d$ with attractor $K$. Let $(Σ,σ)$ denote the one-sided full shift over the alphabet $\{1,..., \ell\}$. We define the projection entropy function $h_π$ on the space of invariant measures on $Σ$ associated with the coding map $π: Σ\to K$, and develop some basic ergodic properties about it. This concept turns out to be crucial in the study of dimensional properties of invariant measures on $K$. We show that for any conformal IFS (resp., the direct product of finitely many conformal IFS), without any separation condition, the pr…
We consider dimensional properties of limit sets of Moran constructions satisfying the finite clustering property. Just to name a few, such limit sets include self-conformal sets satisfying the weak separation condition and certain sub-self-affine sets. In addition to dimension results for the limit set, we manage to express the Assouad dimension of any closed subset of a self-conformal set by means of the Hausdorff dimension. As an interesting consequence of this, we show that a Furstenberg homogeneous self-similar set in the real line satisfies the weak separation condition. We also exhibit …
We prove that for an arbitrary upper semi-continuous function $ϕ\colon G(1,2) \to [0,1]$ there exists a compact set $F$ in the plane such that $\dim_{\textrm{A}} πF = ϕ(π)$ for all $π\in G(1,2)$, where $πF$ is the orthogonal projection of $F$ onto the line $π$. In particular, this shows that the Assouad dimension of orthogonal projections can take on any finite or countable number of distinct values on a set of projections with positive measure. It was previously known that two distinct values could be achieved with positive measure. Recall that for other standard notions of dimension, such as…
We consider the Assouad dimension analogues of two important problems in geometric measure theory. These problems are tied together by the common theme of `passing to weak tangents'. First, we solve an analogue of Falconer's distance set problem for Assouad dimension in the plane: if a planar set has Assouad dimension strictly greater than 1, then its distance set has Assouad dimension 1. We also obtain partial results in higher dimensions. Second, we consider how Assouad dimension behaves under orthogonal projection. We extend the planar projection theorem of Fraser and Orponen to higher dime…
We investigate the Hausdorff measure and content on a class of quasi self-similar sets that include, for example, graph-directed and sub self-similar and self-conformal sets. We show that any Hausdorff measurable subset of such a set has comparable Hausdorff measure and Hausdorff content. In particular, this proves that graph-directed and sub self-conformal sets with positive Hausdorff measure are Ahlfors regular, irrespective of separation conditions. When restricting to self-conformal subsets of the real line with Hausdorff dimension strictly less than one, we additionally show that the weak…
We derive an upper bound for the Assouad dimension of visible parts of self-similar sets generated by iterated function systems with finite rotation groups and satisfying the open set condition. The bound is valid for all visible parts and it depends on the penetrable part of the set, which is a concept defined in this paper. As a corollary, we obtain in the planar case that if the projection is a finite or countable union of intervals then the visible part is 1-dimensional. We also prove that the Assouad dimension of a visible part is strictly smaller than the Hausdorff dimension of the set p…
Let $\{S_i\}_{i\in Λ}$ be a finite contracting affine iterated function system (IFS) on ${\Bbb R}^d$. Let $(Σ,σ)$ denote the two-sided full shift over the alphabet $Λ$, and $π:Σ\to {\Bbb R}^d$ be the coding map associated with the IFS. We prove that the projection of an ergodic $σ$-invariant measure on $Σ$ under $π$ is always exact dimensional, and its Hausdorff dimension satisfies a Ledrappier-Young type formula. Furthermore, the result extends to average contracting affine IFSs. This completes several previous results and answers a folklore open question in the community of fractals. Some ap…
We consider several (related) notions of geometric regularity in the context of limit sets of geometrically finite Kleinian groups and associated Patterson-Sullivan measures. We begin by computing the upper and lower regularity dimensions of the Patterson-Sullivan measure, which involves controlling the relative measure of concentric balls. We then compute the Assouad and lower dimensions of the limit set, which involves controlling local doubling properties. Unlike the Hausdorff, packing, and box-counting dimensions, we show that the Assouad and lower dimensions are not necessarily given by t…
Let $K$ be the attractor of a linear iterated function system (IFS) $S_j(x)=ρ_jx+b_j,$ $j=1,\cdots,m$, on the real line satisfying the generalized finite type condition (whose invariant open set $\mathcal{O}$ is an interval) with an irreducible weighted incidence matrix. This condition was introduced by Lau \& Ngai recently as a natural generalization of the open set condition, allowing us to include many important overlapping cases. They showed that the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of $K$ coincide and can be calculated in terms of the spectral radius of the weighted incidence matrix. Let …
We provide quantitative estimates for the supremum of the Hausdorff dimension of sets in the real line which avoid $\varepsilon$-approximations of arithmetic progressions. Some of these estimates are in terms of Szemerédi bounds. In particular, we answer a question of Fraser, Saito and Yu (IMRN, 2019) and considerably improve their bounds. We also show that Hausdorff dimension is equivalent to box or Assouad dimension for this problem, and obtain a lower bound for Fourier dimension.
In this paper we consider the relationship between the Assouad and box-counting dimension and how both behave under the operation of taking products. We introduce the notion of `equi-homogeneity' of a set, which requires a uniformity in the size of local covers at all lengths and at all points. We prove that the Assouad and box-counting dimensions coincide for sets that have equal upper and lower box-counting dimensions provided that the set `attains' these dimensions (analogous to `s-sets' when considering the Hausdorff dimension), and the set is equi-homogeneous. Using this fact we show that…

We consider the dimension and measure of typical attractors of random iterated function systems (RIFSs). We define a RIFS to be a finite set of (deterministic) iterated function systems (IFSs) acting on the same metric space and, for a given RIFS, we define a continuum of random attractors corresponding to each sequence of deterministic IFSs. Much work has been done on computing the 'almost sure' dimensions of these random attractors. Here we compute the typical dimensions (in the sense of Baire) and observe that our results are in stark contrast to those obtained using the probabilistic appro…
Universal projection theorems with applications to multifractal analysis and the dimension of every ergodic measure on self-conformal sets simultaneously
Let $Φ$ be a $C^{1+γ}$ smooth IFS on $\mathbb{R}$, where $γ>0$. We provide mild conditions on the derivative cocycle that ensure that every self conformal measure is supported on points $x$ that are absolutely normal. That is, for integer $p\geq 2$ the sequence $\lbrace p^k x \rbrace_{k\in \mathbb{N}}$ equidistributes modulo $1$. We thus extend several state of the art results of Hochman and Shmerkin about the prevalence of normal numbers in fractals. When $Φ$ is self-similar we show that the set of absolutely normal numbers has full Hausdorff dimension in its attractor, unless $Φ$ has an expl…
We investigate the influence that $s$-dimensional lower and upper Hausdorff densities have on the geometry of a Radon measure in $\mathbb{R}^n$ when $s$ is a real number between $0$ and $n$. This topic in geometric measure theory has been extensively studied when $s$ is an integer. In this paper, we focus on the non-integer case, building upon a series of papers on $s$-sets by Martín and Mattila from 1988 to 2000. When $0<s<1$, we prove that measures with almost everywhere positive lower density and finite upper density are carried by countably many bi-Lipschitz curves. When $1\leq s<n$, we id…
