In this article we give a necessary and sufficient condition to characterize projective submanifolds in ${\mathbb P}^N$ with codimensions 2 and 3. The conditions involve the Chern classes of the manifold and a very ample line bundle on the manifold. This generalizes our earlier characterization for hypersurfaces. The higher codimensional cases are proposed as a general question.
We show that a real Kähler submanifold in codimension $6$ is essentially a holomorphic submanifold of another real Kähler submanifold in lower codimension if the second fundamental form is not sufficiently degenerated. We also give a shorter proof of this result when the real Kähler submanifold is minimal, using recent results about isometric rigidity.
In this article, we prove a Kahler extension theorem for real Kahler submanifolds of codimension 4 and rank at least 5. Our main theorem states that such a manifold is a holomorphic hypersurface in another real Kahler submanifold of codimension 2. This generalizes a result of Dajczer and Gromoll in 1997 which states that any real Kahler submanifolds of codimension 3 and rank at least 4 admits a Kahler extension.
The objet of this paper is the study of variations of a functional whose integrant is the $σ_u$-curvature of closed submanifolds of arbitrary codimension in Riemannian manifolds.
We derive curvature estimates for minimal submanifolds in Euclidean space for arbitrary dimension and codimension via Gauss map. Thus, Schoen-Simon-Yau's results and Ecker-Huisken's results are generalized to higher codimension. In this way we improve Hildebrandt-Jost-Widman's result for the Bernstein type theorem.
In this paper we study a geometric configuration of submanifolds of arbitrary codimension in an ambient Riemannian space. We obtain relations between the geometry of a q-codimension submanifold Mn along its boundary and the geometry of the boundary of Mn as an hypersuface of a q-codimensional submanifold Pn in an ambient space Mn+q. As a consequence of these geometric ralations we get that the ellipticity of the generalized Newton transformations implies the tranversality of Mn and Pn in Pn is totally geodesic in Mn+q.
We prove integral curvature bounds in terms of the Betti numbers for compact submanifolds of the Euclidean space with low codimension. As an application, we obtain topological obstructions for $δ$-pinched immersions. Furthermore, we obtain intrinsic obstructions for minimal submanifolds in spheres with pinched second fundamental form.
In this paper, we prove some convergence theorems for the mean curvature flow of closed submanifolds in the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n+d}$ under integral curvature conditions. As a consequence, we obtain several differentiable sphere theorems for certain submanifolds in $\mathbb{S}^{n+d}$.
We obtain new curvature estimates and Bernstein type results for minimal $n-$submanifolds in $\ir{n+m},\, m\ge 2$ under the condition that the rank of its Gauss map is at most 2. In particular, this applies to minimal surfaces in Euclidean spaces of arbitrary codimension.
We provide a parametric construction in terms of minimal surfaces of the Euclidean submanifolds of codimension two and arbitrary dimension that attain equality in an inequality due to De Smet, Dillen, Verstraelen and Vrancken. The latter involves the scalar curvature, the norm of the normal curvature tensor and the length of the mean curvature vector.
It is proved some results about existence and non existence of unit normal sections of submanifolds of the Euclidean space and sphere which associated Gauss maps are harmonic. Some applications to CMC hypersurfaces of the sphere and isoparametric submanifolds are obtained too.
Combining the tools of geometric analysis with properties of Jordan angles and angle space distributions, we derive a spherical and a Euclidean Bernstein theorem for minimal submanifolds of arbitrary dimension and codimension, under the condition that the Gauss image is contained in some geometrically defined closed region of a Grassmannian manifold. The proof depends on the subharmoncity of an auxiliary function, the Codazzi equations and geometric measure theory.
A local uniqueness property of holomorphic functions on real-analytic nowhere minimal CR submanifolds of higher codimension is investigated. A sufficient condition called almost minimality is given and studied. A weaker necessary condition, being contained a possibly singular real-analytic Levi-flat hypersurface is studied and characterized. This question is completely resolved for algebraic submanifolds of codimension 2 and a sufficient condition for noncontainment is given for non algebraic submanifolds. As a consequence, an example of a submanifold of codimension 2, not biholomorphically eq…
For every codimension two spacelike submanifold of a Lorentz manifold and each choice of a normal lightlike vector field, we introduce a canonical way to construct a tractor conformal bundle. We characterize when the induced connection of a such submanifold defines a tractor connection and then, in this case, when this tractor conformal bundle with the induced connection is standard for the induced metric. Finally, the normality condition for this tractor conformal bundle endowed with the induced connection is characterized in terms of a strong relationship between the intrinsic and the extrin…
We give a local characterization of codimension two submanifolds which are marginally trapped in Robertson-Walker spaces, in terms of an algebraic equation to be satisfied by the height function. We prove the existence of a large number of local solutions. We refine the description in the case of curves with null acceleration in three-dimensional spaces Robertson-Walker spaces, and in the case of codimension two submanifolds whose second fundamental form is null
Minimal isometric immersions F in codimension two from a complete Kahler manifold into Euclidean space had been classified for dimension greater than or equal to 3. In this note we describe the non--minimal situation by showing that, if F is real analytic but not everywhere minimal, then F is a cylinder over a real Kahler surface G in Euclidean 6-space. In addition, G can be further described.
We show that among the Euclidean submanifolds with codimension two the ones of rank two that are parabolic but nonruled are isometrically rigid. This generalizes the result in [10] that these submanifolds are genuinely rigid. In addition, we give a parametric classifications of all parabolic submanifolds.
In this paper, we study deformations of compact holomorphic Poisson submanifolds which extend Kodaira's series of papers on semi-regularity (deformations of compact complex submanifolds of codimension 1), deformations of compact complex submanifolds of arbitrary codimensions, and stability of compact complex submanifolds in the context of holomorphic Poisson deformations. We also study simultaneous deformations of holomorphic Poisson structures and holomorphic Poisson submanifolds on a fixed underlying compact complex manifold. In appendices, we present deformations of Poisson closed subscheme…
We prove long-time existence for mean curvature flow of a smooth $n$-dimensional spacelike submanifold of an $n+m$ dimensional manifold whose metric satisfies the timelike curvature condition.
We prove a Sobolev inequality which holds on submanifolds in Euclidean space of arbitrary dimension and codimension. This inequality is sharp if the codimension is at most 2. As a special case, we obtain a sharp isoperimetric inequality for minimal submanifolds in Euclidean space of codimension at most 2.
Wintgen ideal submanifolds in space forms are those ones attaining equality pointwise in the so-called DDVV inequality which relates the scalar curvature, the mean curvature and the scalar normal curvature. Using the framework of Moebius geometry, we show that in the codimension two case, the mean curvature sphere of the Wintgen ideal submanifold corresponds to an 1-isotropic holomorphic curve in a complex quadric Q. Conversely, any 1-isotropic complex curve in Q describes a 2-parameter family of m-dimensional spheres whose envelope is always a m-dimensional Wintgen ideal submanifold at the re…
We investigate the convergence of the mean curvature flow of arbitrary codimension in Riemannian manifolds with bounded geometry. We prove that if the initial submanifold satisfies a pinching condition, then along the mean curvature flow the submanifold contracts smoothly to a round point in finite time. As a consequence we obtain a differentiable sphere theorem for submanifolds in a Riemannian manifold.
In this paper, we investigate the mean curvature flow of submanifolds of arbitrary codimension in $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^m$. We prove that if the initial submanifold satisfies a pinching condition, then the mean curvature flow converges to a round point in finite time, or converges to a totally geodesic submanifold as $t \rightarrow \infty$. Consequently, we obtain a new differentiable sphere theorem for submanifolds in $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^m$. Our work improves the convergence theorem for mean curvature flow due to Pipoli and Sinestrari {\cite{PiSi2015}}.
Consider a codimension $1$ submanifold $N^n\subset M^{n+1}$, where $M^{n+1}\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+2}$ is a hypersurface. The envelope of tangent spaces of $M$ along $N$ generalizes the concept of tangent developable surface of a surface along a curve. In this paper, we study the singularities of these envelopes. There are some important examples of submanifolds that admit a vector field tangent to $M$ and transversal to $N$ whose derivative in any direction of $N$ is contained in $N$. When this is the case, one can construct transversal plane bundles and affine metrics on $N$ with the desirable …
Let $f\colon M^{2n}\to\mathbb{R}^{2n+4}$ be an isometric immersion of a Kaehler manifold of complex dimension $n\geq 5$ into Euclidean space with complex rank at least $5$ everywhere. Our main result is that, along each connected component of an open dense subset of $M^{2n}$, either $f$ is holomorphic in $\mathbb{R}^{2n+4}\cong\mathbb{C}^{n+2}$ or it is in a unique way a composition $f=F\circ h$ of isometric immersions. In the latter case, we have that $h\colon M^{2n}\to N^{2n+2}$ is holomorphic and $F\colon N^{2n+2}\to\mathbb{R}^{2n+4}$ belongs to the class, by now quite well understood, of n…
The study of the mean curvature flow from the perspective of partial differential equations began with Gerhard Huisken's pioneering work in 1984. Since that time, the mean curvature flow of hypersurfaces has been a lively area of study. Although Huisken's seminal paper is now just over twenty-five years old, the study of the mean curvature flow of submanifolds of higher codimension has only recently started to receive attention. The mean curvature flow of submanifolds is the main object of investigation in this thesis, and indeed, the central results we obtain can be considered as high codimen…
We provide a classification theorem for compact stable minimal immersions (CSMI) of codimension $1$ or dimension $1$ (codimension $1$ and $2$ or dimension $1$ and $2$) in the product of a complex (quaternionic) projective space with any other Riemannian manifold. We characterize the complex minimal immersions of codimension $2$ or dimension $2$ as the only CSMI in the product of two complex projective spaces. As an application, we characterize the CSMI of codimension $1$ or dimension $1$ (codimension $1$ and $2$ or dimension $1$ and $2$) in the product of a complex (quaternionic) projective sp…
The purpose of this article is to examine the possible shapes of type I singularities that form in the mean curvature flow of submanifolds of arbitrary codimension, assuming that the initial submanifold satisfies a particular curvature pinching condition.
The purpose of this work is to close the local deformation problem of rank two Euclidean submanifolds in codimension two by describing their moduli space of deformations. In the process, we provide an explicit simple representation of these submanifolds, a result of independent interest by its applications. We also determine which deformations are genuine and honest, allowing us to find the first known examples of honestly locally deformable rank two submanifolds in codimension two. In addition, we study which of these submanifolds admit isometric immersions as Euclidean hypersurfaces, a prope…
These are lecture notes on the rigidity of submanifolds of projective space "resembling" compact Hermitian symmetric spaces in their homogeneous embeddings. Recent results are surveyed, along with their classical predecessors. The notes include an introduction to moving frames in projective geometry, an exposition of the Hwang-Yamaguchi ridgidity theorem and a new variant of the Hwang-Yamaguchi theorem.
We study codimension one holomorphic distributions on the projective three-space, analyzing the properties of their singular schemes and tangent sheaves. In particular, we provide a classification of codimension one distributions of degree at most 2 with locally free tangent sheaves, and show that codimension one distributions of arbitrary degree with only isolated singularities have stable tangent sheaves. Furthermore, we describe the moduli space of distributions in terms of Grothendieck's Quot-scheme for the tangent bundle. In certain cases, we show that the moduli space of codimension one …
In this paper, we prove that if the initial submanifold $M_0$ of dimension $n(\ge6)$ satisfies an optimal pinching condition, then the mean curvature flow of arbitrary codimension in hyperbolic spaces converges to a round point in finite time. In particular, we obtain the optimal differentiable sphere theorem for submanifolds in hyperbolic spaces. It should be emphasized that our pinching condition implies that the Ricci curvature of the initial submanifold is positive, but does not imply positivity of the sectional curvature of $M_0$.
New rigidity results for complete non-compact spacelike submanifolds of arbitrary codimension in plane fronted waves are obtained. Under appropriate assumptions, we prove that a complete spacelike submanifold in these spacetimes is contained in a characteristic lightlike hypersurface. Moreover, for a complete codimension two extremal submanifold in a plane fronted wave we show sufficient conditions to guarantee that it is a (totally geodesic) wavefront.
In this paper we investigate the convergence for the mean curvature flow of closed submanifolds with arbitrary codimension in space forms. Particularly, we prove that the mean curvature flow deforms a closed submanifold satisfying a pinching condition in a hyperbolic space form to a round point in finite time.
For compact Riemannian manifolds with convex boundary, B.White proved the following alternative: Either there is an isoperimetric inequality for minimal hypersurfaces or there exists a closed minimal hypersurface, possibly with a small singular set. There is the natural question if a similar result is true for submanifolds of higher codimension. Specifically, B.White asked if the non-existence of an isoperimetric inequality for k-varifolds implies the existence of a nonzero, stationary, integral k-varifold. We present examples showing that this is not true in codimension greater than two. The …
Burq-Gérard-Tzvetkov and Hu established $L^p$ estimates ($2\le p\le \infty$) for the restriction of eigenfunctions to submanifolds. The estimates are sharp, except for the log loss at the endpoint $L^2$ estimates for submanifolds of codimension 2. It has long been believed that the log loss at the endpoint can be removed in general, while the problem is still open. So this paper is devoted to the study of sharp endpoint restriction estimates for eigenfunctions in this case. Chen and Sogge removed the log loss for the geodesics on 3-dimensional manifolds. In this paper, we generalize their resu…
We classify biharmonic submanifolds with certain geometric properties in Euclidean spheres. For codimension 1, we determine the biharmonic hypersurfaces with at most two distinct principal curvatures and the conformally flat biharmonic hypersurfaces. We obtain some rigidity results for pseudo-umbilical biharmonic submanifolds of codimension 2 and for biharmonic surfaces with parallel mean curvature vector field. We also study the type, in the sense of B-Y. Chen, of compact proper biharmonic submanifolds with constant mean curvature in spheres.
We prove that complete submanifolds, on which the Omori-Yau weak maximum principle for the Hessian holds, with low codimension and bounded by cylinders of small radius must have points rich in large positive extrinsic curvature. The lower the codimension is, the richer such points are. The smaller the radius is, the larger such curvatures are. This work unifies and generalizes several previous results on submanifolds with nonpositive extrinsic curvature.
This paper consists of two main results. In the first one we describe all Kaehler immersions of a bounded symmetric domain into the infinite dimensional complex projective space in terms of the Wallach set of the domain. In the second one we exhibit an example of complete and non-homogeneous Kaehler-Einstein metric with negative scalar curvature which admits a Kaehler immersion into the infinite dimensional complex projective space.
Let $f\colon M^{2n}\to\mathbb{R}^{2n+\ell}$, $n \geq 5$, denote a conformal immersion into Euclidean space with codimension $\ell$ of a Kaehler manifold of complex dimension $n$ and free of flat points. For codimensions $\ell=1,2$ we show that such a submanifold can always be locally obtained in a rather simple way, namely, from an isometric immersion of the Kaehler manifold $M^{2n}$ into either $\mathbb{R}^{2n+1}$ or $\mathbb{R}^{2n+2}$, the latter being a class of submanifolds already extensively studied.
We study high codimension mean curvature flow of a submanifold $\mathcal{M}^n$ of dimension $n$ in Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{n+k}$ subject to the quadratic curvature condition $ |A|^{2}\leq c_n |H|^{2}, c _n = \min\{ \frac{4}{3n} , \frac{1}{n-2}\}$. This condition extends the notion of two-convexity for hypersurfaces to high codimension submanifolds. We analyse singularity formation in the mean curvature flow of high codimension by directly proving a pointwise gradient estimate. We then show that near a singularity the surface is quantitatively cylindrical.
