A local uniqueness property of holomorphic functions on real-analytic nowhere minimal CR submanifolds of higher codimension is investigated. A sufficient condition called almost minimality is given and studied. A weaker necessary condition, being contained a possibly singular real-analytic Levi-flat hypersurface is studied and characterized. This question is completely resolved for algebraic submanifolds of codimension 2 and a sufficient condition for noncontainment is given for non algebraic submanifolds. As a consequence, an example of a submanifold of codimension 2, not biholomorphically equivalent to an algebraic one, is given. We also investigate the structure of singularities of Levi-flat hypersurfaces.
We prove the Lefchetz theorem for CR submanifolds in Hermitian symmetric spaces. As an application we prove the nonexistence of real analytic Levi flat submanifolds in such manifolds.
Real-analytic Levi-flat codimension two CR singular submanifolds are a natural generalization to ${\mathbb{C}}^m$, $m > 2$, of Bishop surfaces in ${\mathbb{C}}^2$. Such submanifolds for example arise as zero sets of mixed-holomorphic equations with one variable antiholomorphic. We classify the codimension two Levi-flat CR singular quadrics, and we notice that new types of submanifolds arise in dimension 3 or greater. In fact, the nondegenerate submanifolds, i.e. higher order purturbations of $z_m=\bar{z}_1z_2+\bar{z}_1^2$, have no analogue in dimension 2. We prove that the Levi-foliation exten…
Local conditions on boundaries of $C^\infty$ Levi-flat hypersurfaces, in case the boundary is a generic submanifold, are studied. For nontrivial real analytic boundaries we get an extension and uniqueness result, which forces the hypersurface to be real analytic. This allows us to classify all real analytic generic boundaries of Levi-flat hypersurfaces in terms of their normal coordinates. For the remaining case of generic real analytic boundary we get a weaker extension theorem. We find examples to show that these two extension results are optimal. Further, a class of nowhere minimal real ana…
Let E be a generic real submanifold of an almost complex manifold. The geometry of Bishop discs attached to E is studied in terms of the Levi form of E.
Let $X$ be a Stein manifold of dimension at least 3. Given a compact codimension 2 real analytic submanifold $M$ of $X$, that is the boundary of a compact Levi-flat hypersurface $H$, we study the regularity of $H$. Suppose that the CR singularities of $M$ are an $\mathcal{O}(X)$-convex set. For example, suppose $M$ has only finitely many CR singularities, which is a generic condition. Then $H$ must in fact be a real analytic submanifold. If $M$ is real algebraic, it follows that $H$ is real algebraic and in fact extends past $M$, even near CR singularities. To prove these results we provide tw…
We compare various definitions of nondegeneracy of the Levi map for real submanifolds of higher codimension in $C^N$ and discuss the generalization to higher codimension of the 2-jet determination for biholomorphisms in the hypersurface case proved by Chern and Moser.
In case M is Levi non-degenerate in the sense Tumanov, we construct stationary discs for $M$. If furthermore M satisfies an additional non-degeneracy condition, we apply the method of stationary discs to obtain 2-jet determination of CR automorphisms of M.
Let $M$ be a pseudoconvex, oriented, bounded and closed CR submanifold of $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ of hypersurface type. Our main result says that when a certain $1$-form on $M$ is exact on the null space of the Levi form, then the complex Green operator on $M$ satisfies Sobolev estimates. This happens in particular when $M$ admits a set of plurisubharmonic defining functions or when $M$ is strictly pseudoconvex except for the points on a simply connected complex submanifold.
Let $S\subset \C^n$, $n\geq 3$ be a compact connected 2-codimensional submanifold having the following property: there exists a Levi-flat hypersurface whose boundary is $S$, possibly as a current. Our goal is to get examples of such $S$ containing at least one special 1-hyperbolic point: sphere with two horns; elementary models and their gluing. The particular cases of graphs are also described.
Let $S$ be a real-analytic hypersurface in $C^n$ or, more generally, a CR-submanifold in a complex manifold $Z$ of arbitrary CR-codimension. This paper addresses the question, when a local biholomorphic map between open sets in $Z$ sending an open piece of $S$ into $S$ extends to a global biholomorphic self-map of $Z$ preserving $S$. We give answers for a large class of Levi-degenerate group orbits in compact Hermitian symmetric spaces.
A well known Conjecture due to Beloshapka asserts that all totally nondegenerate polynomial models with the length $l\geq 3$ of their Levi-Tanaka algebra are {\em rigid}, that is, any point preserving automorphism of them is completely determined by the restriction of its differential at the fixed point onto the complex tangent space. For the length $l=3$, Beloshapka's Conjecture was proved by Gammel and Kossovskiy in 2006. In this paper, we prove the Conjecture for arbitrary length $l\geq 3$. As another application of our method, we construct polynomial models of length $l\geq 3$, which are n…
We solve the Levi-flat Plateau problem in the following case. Let $M \subset {\mathbb C}^{n+1}$, $n \geq 2$, be a connected compact real-analytic codimension-two submanifold with only nondegenerate CR singularities. Suppose $M$ is a diffeomorphic image via a real-analytic CR map of a real-analytic hypersurface in ${\mathbb C}^n \times {\mathbb R}$ with only nondegenerate CR singularities. Then there exists a unique compact real-analytic Levi-flat hypersurface, nonsingular except possibly for self-intersections, with boundary $M$. We also study boundary regularity of CR automorphisms of domains…
We address the problem of existence and uniqueness of a Levi-flat hypersurface $M$ in $C^n$ with prescribed compact boundary $S$ for $n\ge3$. The situation for $n\ge3$ differs sharply from the well studied case $n=2$. We first establish necessary conditions on $S$ at both complex and CR points, needed for the existence of $M$. All CR points have to be nonminimal and all complex points have to be "flat". Then, adding a positivity condition at complex points, which is similar to the ellipticity for $n=2$ and excluding the possibility of $S$ to contain complex $(n-2)$-dimensional submanifolds, we…
The purpose of this paper is to organize some results on the local geometry of CR singular real-analytic manifolds that are images of CR manifolds via a CR map that is a diffeomorphism onto its image. We find a necessary (sufficient in dimension 2) condition for the diffeomorphism to extend to a finite holomorphic map. The multiplicity of this map is a biholomorphic invariant that is precisely the Moser invariant of the image when it is a Bishop surface with vanishing Bishop invariant. In higher dimensions, we study Levi-flat CR singular images and we prove that the set of CR singular points m…
In an earlier paper the authors provided general conditions on a real codimension 2 submanifold $S\subset C^{n}$, $n\ge 3$, such that there exists a possibly singular Levi-flat hypersurface $M$ bounded by $S$. In this paper we consider the case when $S$ is a graph of a smooth function over the boundary of a bounded strongly convex domain $Ω\subset C^{n-1}\times R$ and show that in this case $M$ is necessarily a graph of a smooth function over $Ω$. In particular, $M$ is non-singular.
We give series of explicit examples of Levi-nondegenerate real-analytic hypersurfaces in complex spaces that are not transversally holomorphically embeddable into hyperquadrics of any dimension. For this, we construct invariants attached to a given hypersurface that serve as obstructions to embeddability. We further study the embeddability problem for real-analytic submanifolds of higher codimension and answer a question by Forstnerič.
Given a wedge V with generic edge in a submanifold M of $C^N$, in general, CR-functions on V do not extend to a wedge in $C^N$ in the direction of each nontrivial value of the Levi form of M as was recently observed by Eastwood and Graham. In this paper we propose an invariant geometric way of selecting those Levi form directions that are responsible for the extension. These are the Levi form directions of the complex tangent vectors, whose complex planes intersect the tangent cone to the wedge in angles larger than $π/2$. We show by several examples the optimality of this criterion. Applicati…
We prove that the local (pseudo)group of biholomorphisms stabilizing a minimal, finitely nondegenerate real algebraic submanifold in C^n is a real algebraic local Lie group (the works of S.M. Baouendi, P. Ebenfelt, L.-P. Rothschild and D. Zaitsev published in this direction restrict, without understandable reason, to the isotropy group of a fixed central point). We deduce necessary conditions for the local algebraizability of real analytic rigid tubes of arbitrary codimension in C^n. Without using the Elie Cartan equivalence algorithm, we explain the up to now only known example Im w = e^(|z^2…
In any positive CR-dimension and CR-codimension we provide a construction of real-analytic holomorphically nondegenerate CR-submanifolds, which are $C^\infty$ CR-equivalent, but are inequivalent holomorphically. As a corollary, we provide the negative answer to the conjecture of Ebenfelt and Huang \cite{eh} on the analyticity of CR-equivalences between real-analytic Levi nonflat hypersurfaces in dimension 2.
We give necessary conditions for certain real analytic tube generic submanifolds in C^n to be locally algebraizable. As an application, we exhibit families of real analytic non locally algebraizable tube generic submanifolds in C^n. During the proof, we show that the local CR automorphism group of a minimal, finitely nondegenerate real algebraic generic submanifold is a real algebraic local Lie group. We may state one of the main results as follows. Let M be a real analytic hypersurface tube in C^n passing through the origin, having a defining equation of the form v = ϕ(y), where (z,w)= (x+iy,…
A primary goal in this paper is to study the question that asks when a real analytic submanifold $M$ in ${\mathbb{C}}^{n+1}$ bounds a real analytic (up to $M$) Levi-flat hypersurface $\hat{M}$ near $p\in M$ such that $\hat{M}$ is foliated by a family of complex hypersurfaces moving along the normal direction of $M$ at $p$, and gives the invariant local hull of holomorphy of $M$ near $p$. This question is equivalent to the holomorphic flattening problem for $M$ near $p$. We will give an affirmative answer to above question when $p$ is a real complex tangent point with at least one elliptic dire…
For a point $p$ in a smooth real hypersurface $M\subset\C^n$, where the Levi form has the nontrivial kernel $K^{10}_p$, we introduce an invariant cubic tensor $τ^3_p \colon \C T_p \times K^{10}_p \times \overline{K^{10}_p} \to \C\otimes (T_p/H_p)$, which together with Ebenfelt's tensor $ψ_3$, constitutes the full set of $3$rd order invariants of $M$ at $p$. Next, in addition, assume $M\subset\C^n$ to be {\em (weakly) pseudoconvex}. Then $τ^3_p$ must identically vanish. In this case we further define an invariant quartic tensor $τ^4_p \colon \C T_p \times \C T_p \times K^{10}_p\times \overline{…
We give a solution to the equivalence and the embedding problems for smooth CR-submanifolds of complex spaces (and, more generally, for abstract CR-manifolds) in terms of complete differential systems in jet bundles satisfied by all CR-equivalences or CR-embeddings respectively (local and global). For the equivalence problem, the manifolds are assumed to be of finite type and finitely nondegenerate. These are higher order generalizations of the corresponding nondegeneracy conditions for the Levi form. It is shown by a simple example that these nondegeneracy conditions cannot be even slightly r…
Let $M$ be a real analytic hypersurface in $\bC^N$ which is finitely nondegenerate, a notion that can be viewed as a generalization of Levi nondegenerate, at $p_0\in M$. We show that if $M'$ is another such hypersurface and $p'_0\in M'$, then the set of germs at $p_0$ of biholomorphisms $H$ with $H(M)\subset M'$ and $H(p_0)=p'_0$, equipped with its natural topology, can be naturally embedded as a real analytic submanifold in the complex jet group of $\bC^N$ of the appropriate order. We also show that this submanifold is defined by equations that can be explicitly computed from defining equatio…
Let M be a connected generic real-analytic CR-submanifold of a finite-dimensional complex vector space E. Suppose that for every point a in M the Lie algebra hol(M,a) of germs of all infinitesimal real-analytic CR-automorphisms of M at a is finite-dimensional and its complexification contains all constant vector fields and the Euler vector field. Under these assumptions we show that: (I) every hol(M,a) consists of polynomial vector fields, hence coincides with the Lie algebra hol(M) of all infinitesimal real-analytic CR-automorphisms of M; (II) every local real-analytic CR-automorphism of M ex…
The purpose of this paper is to generalize in a geometric setting theorems of Severi, Brown and Bochner about analytic continuation of real analytic functions which are holomorphic or harmonic with respect to one of its variables. We prove in particular that if N is a real analytic levi-flat annulus in an open set of R^{n}\timesC^{2}, then one can find X\subsetR^{n}\timesC^{2} such that X\cupN is a levi-flat real analytic subset and X fills N in the sense that the boundary of the integration current of X is a prescribed smooth submanifold of N foliated by real curves. Moreover, real analytic f…
