We study higher-form symmetries in 5d quantum field theories, whose charged operators include extended operators such as Wilson line and 't Hooft operators. We outline criteria for the existence of higher-form symmetries both from a field theory point of view as well as from the geometric realization in M-theory on non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds. A geometric criterion for determining the higher-form symmetry from the intersection data of the Calabi-Yau is provided, and we test it in a multitude of examples, including toric geometries. We further check that the higher-form symmetry is consistent with dualities and is invariant under flop transitions, which relate theories with the same UV-fixed point. We explore extensions to higher-form symmetries in other compactifications of M-theory, such as $G_2$-holonomy manifolds, which give rise to 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories.
The exhaustive study of the rigid symmetries of arbitrary free field theories is motivated, along several lines, as a preliminary step in the completion of the higher-spin interaction problem in full generality. Some results for the simplest example (a scalar field) are reviewed and commented along these lines.
Higher order conservation laws, associated with conserved antisymmetric tensors $j^{μ_1 ... μ_k}$ fulfilling $\partial_{μ_1} j^{μ_1 ... μ_k} \approx 0$, are shown to define rigid symmetries of the master equation. They thus lead to independent Ward identities which are explicitly derived.
Soft theorems can be recast as Ward identities of asymptotic symmetries. We review such relation for the leading and subleading soft graviton theorems in arbitrary even dimensions. While soft theorems are trivially generalized to dimensions higher than four, the charges of asymptotic symmetries are plagued by divergences requiring a renormalization. We argue that the renormalized charges of these symmetries can be determined by rewriting soft theorems as Ward identities. In order to show that the charges of such identities generate asymptotic symmetries, we propose a suitable commutation relat…
We define a class of $A_\infty$-algebras that are obtained by deformations of higher spin symmetries. While higher spin symmetries of a free CFT form an associative algebra, the slightly broken higher spin symmetries give rise to a minimal $A_\infty$-algebra extending the associative one. These $A_\infty$-algebras are related to non-commutative deformation quantization much as the unbroken higher spin symmetries result from the conventional deformation quantization. In the case of three dimensions there is an additional parameter that the $A_\infty$-structure depends on, which is to be related…
General aspects of higher-spin gauge theory and unfolded formulation are briefly recalled with some emphasize on the recent results on the breaking of $sp(8)$ symmetry by current interactions and construction of invariant functionals relevant to the higher-spin holography.
We study higher symmetries and anomalies of 4d $\mathfrak{so}(2n_c)$ gauge theory with $2n_f$ flavors. We find that they depend on the parity of $n_c$ and $n_f$, the global form of the gauge group, and the discrete theta angle. The contribution from the fermions plays a central role in our analysis. Furthermore, our conclusion applies to $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric cases as well, and we see that higher symmetries and anomalies match across the Intriligator-Seiberg duality between $\mathfrak{so}(2n_c)\leftrightarrow\mathfrak{so}(2n_f-2n_c+4)$.
We focus in this work to renew the interest in higher conformal spins symmetries and their relations to quantum field theories and integrable models. We consider the extension of the conformal Frappat et al. symmetries containing the Virasoro and the Antoniadis et al. algebras as particular cases describing geometrically special diffeomorphisms of the two dimensional torus $T^2$. We show in a consistent way, and explicitly, how one can extract these generalized symmetries from the Gelfand-Dickey algebra. The link with Liouville and Toda conformal field theories is established and various impor…
We analyze topological mass terms of BF type arising in supersymmetric M-theory compactifications to $AdS_5$. These describe spontaneously broken higher-form gauge symmetries in the bulk. Different choices of boundary conditions for the BF terms yield dual field theories with distinct global discrete symmetries. We discuss in detail these symmetries and their 't Hooft anomalies for 4d $\mathcal N = 1$ SCFTs arising from M5-branes wrapped on a Riemann surface without punctures, including theories from M5-branes at a $\mathbb Z_2$ orbifold singularity. The anomaly polynomial is computed via infl…
It was recently argued that quantum field theories possess one-form and higher-form symmetries, labelled `generalized global symmetries.' In this paper, we describe how those higher-form symmetries can be understood mathematically as special cases of more general 2-groups and higher groups, and discuss examples of quantum field theories admitting actions of more general higher groups than merely one-form and higher-form symmetries. We discuss analogues of topological defects for some of these higher symmetry groups, relating some of them to ordinary topological defects. We also discuss topolog…
By incorporating higher-form symmetries, we propose a refined definition of the theories obtained by compactification of the 6d $(2,0)$ theory on a three-manifold $M_3$. This generalization is applicable to both the 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ and $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric reductions. An observable that is sensitive to the higher-form symmetries is the Witten index, which can be computed by counting solutions to a set of Bethe equations that are determined by $M_3$. This is carried out in detail for $M_3$ a Seifert manifold, where we compute a refined version of the Witten index. In the context of…
A special embedding of the SU(4) algebra in SU(10), including both spin two and spin three symmetry generators, is constructed. A possible five dimensional action for massless spin two and three fields with cubic interaction is constructed. The connection with the previously investigated higher spin theories in $AdS_{5}$ background is discussed. Generalization to the more general case of symmetries, including spins $2,3,\dots s$, is shown.
Tensionless string theory on AdS3 x S3 x T4, as captured by a free symmetric product orbifold, has a large set of conserved currents which can be usefully organised in terms of representations of a N=(4,4) supersymmetric higher spin algebra. In this paper we focus on the single particle currents which generate the asymptotic stringy symmetry algebra on AdS3, and whose wedge modes describe the unbroken gauge symmetries of string theory in this background. We show that this global subalgebra contains two distinct higher spin algebras that generate the full algebra as a `higher spin square'. The …
We discuss general properties of the theory of higher spin gauge fields in $AdS_4$ focusing on the relationship between the star-product origin of the higher spin symmetries, AdS geometry and the concept of space-time locality. A full list of conserved higher spin currents in the flat space of arbitrary dimension is presented.
In four-dimensional axion electrodynamics, a Chern-Simons coupling of the form $θF \wedge F$ leads to a higher-group global symmetry between background gauge fields. At the same time, such a Chern-Simons coupling leads to a mixing between the Weak Gravity Conjectures for the axion and the gauge field, so that the charged excitations of a Weak Gravity Conjecture-satisfying axion string will also satisfy the Weak Gravity Conjecture for the gauge field. In this paper, we argue that these higher-group symmetries and this phenomenon of Weak Gravity Conjecture mixing are related to one another. We s…
Current interaction of massless fields in four dimensions is shown to break sp (8) symmetry of free massless equations of all spins down to the conformal symmetry su (2,2). This breaking is in agreement with the form of nonlinear higher-spin field equations.

After dimensional reduction to three dimensions, the lowest order effective actions for pure gravity, M-theory and the Bosonic string admit an enhanced symmetry group. In this paper we initiate study of how this enhancement is affected by the inclusion of higher derivative terms. In particular we show that the coefficients of the scalar fields associated to the Cartan subalgebra are given by weights of the enhanced symmetry group.
We discuss the emergence of W-algebras as asymptotic symmetries of higher-spin gauge theories coupled to three-dimensional Einstein gravity with a negative cosmological constant. We focus on models involving a finite number of bosonic higher-spin fields, and especially on the example provided by the coupling of a spin-3 field to gravity. It is described by a SL(3) \times SL(3) Chern-Simons theory and its asymptotic symmetry algebra is given by two copies of the classical W_3-algebra with central charge the one computed by Brown and Henneaux in pure gravity with negative cosmological constant.
We study various aspects of spontaneous symmetry breaking in theories that possess higher-form symmetries, which are symmetries whose charged objects have a dimension $p>0$. We first sketch a proof of a higher version of Goldstone's theorem, and then discuss how boundary conditions and gauge-fixing issues are dealt with in theories with spontaneously broken higher symmetries, focusing in particular on $p$-form $U(1)$ gauge theories. We then elaborate on a generalization of the Coleman-Mermin-Wagner theorem for higher-form symmetries, namely that in spacetime dimension $D$, continuous $p$-form …
Symmetries and anomalies of a $d$-dimensional quantum field theory are often encoded in a $(d+1)$-dimensional topological action, called symmetry topological field theory (TFT). We derive the symmetry TFT for the 2-form and 1-form symmetries of 6d $(1,0)$ field theories, focusing on theories with a single tensor multiplet (rank 1). We implement this by coupling the low-energy tensor branch action to the background fields for the higher-form symmetries and by looking at the symmetry transformation rules on dynamical and background fields. These transformation rules also imply a mixing of the hi…
We consider the consequences of global higher-spin symmetries in quantum field theories on a fixed de Sitter background of spacetime dimension $D \ge 3$. These symmetries enhance the symmetry group associated with the isometries of the de Sitter background and thus strongly constrain the dynamics of the theory. In particular, we consider the case when a higher spin charge acts linearly on a scalar operator to leading order in a Fefferman-Graham expansion near the future/past conformal boundaries. We show that this implies that the expectation values of the operator inserted near the boundaries…
It is shown that similarly to massless superparticle, classical global symmetry of the Berkovits twistor string action is infinite-dimensional. We identify its superalgebra, whose finite-dimensional subalgebra contains $psl(4|4,\mathbb R)$ superalgebra. In quantum theory this infinite-dimensional symmetry breaks down to $SL(4|4,\mathbb R)$ one.
It is shown that the Schrodinger symmetry algebra of a free particle in d spatial dimensions can be embedded into a representation of the higher-spin algebra. The latter spans an infinite dimensional algebra of higher-order symmetry generators of the free Schrodinger equation. An explicit representation of the maximal finite dimensional subalgebra of the higher spin algebra is given in terms of non-relativistic generators. We show also how to convert Vasiliev's equations into an explicit non-relativistic covariant form, such that they might apply to non-relativistic systems. Our procedure reve…
We explore higher-form symmetries of M- and F-theory compactified on elliptic fibrations, determined by the topology of their asymptotic boundaries. The underlying geometric structures are shown to be equivalent to known characterizations of the gauge group topology in F-theory via Mordell--Weil torsion and string junctions. We further study dimensional reductions of the 11d Chern--Simons term in the presence of torsional boundary $G_4$-fluxes, which encode background gauge fields of center 1-form symmetries in the lower-dimensional effective gauge theory. We find contributions that can be int…

We evaluate one-loop partition functions of higher-spin fields in thermal flat space with angular potentials; this computation is performed in arbitrary space-time dimension, and the result is a simple combination of Poincaré characters. We then focus on dimension three, showing that suitable products of one-loop partition functions coincide with vacuum characters of higher-spin asymptotic symmetry algebras at null infinity. These are extensions of the bms_3 algebra that emerges in pure gravity, and we propose a way to build their unitary representations and to compute the associated character…
We discuss how to systematically compute the asymptotic symmetry algebras of generic three-dimensional bosonic higher-spin gauge theories in backgrounds that are asymptotically AdS. We apply these techniques to a one-parameter family of higher-spin gauge theories that can be considered as large N limits of SL(N) x SL(N) Chern-Simons theories, and we provide a closed formula for the structure constants of the resulting infinite-dimensional non-linear W-algebras. Along the way we provide a closed formula for the structure constants of all classical W_N algebras. In both examples the higher-spin …
The strong form of the AdS/CFT correspondence implies that the leading $N$ expressions for the connected correlation functions of the gauge invariant operators in the free ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with the gauge group SU(N) correspond to the boundary S matrix of the classical interacting theory in the Anti de Sitter space. It was conjectured recently that the theory in the bulk should be a local theory of infinitely many higher spin fields. In this paper we study the free higher spin fields ($N=\infty$) corresponding to the free scalar fields on the boundary. We explicitly…
The unconstrained frame-like formulation of an infinite tower of completely symmetric tensor gauge fields is reviewed and examined in the limit where the cosmological constant goes to zero. By partially fixing the gauge and solving the torsion constraints, the form of the gauge transformations in the unconstrained metric-like formulation are obtained till first order in a weak field expansion. The algebra of the corresponding gauge symmetries is shown to be equivalent, at this order and modulo (unphysical) gauge parameter redefinitions, to the Lie algebra of Hermitian differential operators on…
In the tensionless limit of string theory on flat background all the massive tower of states gets squeezed to a common zero mass level and the free theory is described by an infinite amount of massless free fields with arbitrary integer high spin. We notice that in this situation the very notion of critical dimension gets lost, the apparency of infinite global symmetries takes place, and the closed tensionless string can be realized as a constrained subsystem of the open one in a natural way. Moreover, we study the tensionless limit of the Witten's cubic sting field theory and find that the th…
The relation between the bosonic higher spin ${\cal W}_\infty[λ]$ algebra, the affine Yangian of $\mathfrak{gl}_{1}$, and the SH$^c$ algebra is established in detail. For generic $λ$ we find explicit expressions for the low-lying ${\cal W}_\infty[λ]$ modes in terms of the affine Yangian generators, and deduce from this the precise identification between $λ$ and the parameters of the affine Yangian. Furthermore, for the free field cases corresponding to $λ=0$ and $λ=1$ we give closed-form expressions for the affine Yangian generators in terms of the free fields. Interestingly, the relation betw…
We determine the structure of 1-form symmetries for all 4d $\mathcal{N} = 2$ theories that have a geometric engineering in terms of type IIB string theory on isolated hypersurface singularities. This is a large class of models, that includes Argyres-Douglas theories and many others. Despite the lack of known gauge theory descriptions for most such theories, we find that the spectrum of 1-form symmetries can be obtained via a careful analysis of the non-commutative behaviour of RR fluxes at infinity in the IIB setup. The final result admits a very compact field theoretical reformulation in term…
Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we identify the symmetry algebra of the Laplacian on Euclidean space as an explicit quotient of the universal enveloping algebra of the Lie algebra of conformal motions. We construct analogues of these symmetries on a general conformal manifold.
We present higher-spin algebras containing a Poincaré subalgebra and with the same set of generators as the Lie algebras that are relevant to Vasiliev's equations in any space-time dimension $D \geq 3$. Given these properties, they can be considered either as candidate rigid symmetries for higher-spin gauge theories in Minkowski space or as Carrollian conformal higher-spin symmetries in one less dimension. We build these Lie algebras as quotients of the universal enveloping algebra of $iso(1,D-1)$ and we show how to recover them as Inönü-Wigner contractions of the rigid symmetries of higher-sp…
We study the compatibility between the conformal symmetry together with the unitarity and the continuous higher-form symmetries. We show that the d-dimensional unitary conformal field theories are not consistent with continuous p-form symmetries for certain (d,p), assuming that the corresponding conserved current is a conformal primary operator. We further discuss several dynamical applications of this constraint.
We consider the relation between higher spin gauge fields and real Kac-Moody Lie algebras. These algebras are obtained by double and triple extensions of real forms g_0 of the finite-dimensional simple algebras g arising in dimensional reductions of gravity and supergravity theories. Besides providing an exhaustive list of all such algebras, together with their associated involutions and restricted root diagrams, we are able to prove general properties of their spectrum of generators with respect to a decomposition of the triple extension of g_0 under its gravity subalgebra gl(D,R). These resu…
We discuss the geometric origin of discrete higher form symmetries of quantum field theories in terms of defect groups from geometric engineering in M-theory. The flux non-commutativity in M-theory gives rise to (mixed) 't Hooft anomalies for the defect group which constrains the corresponding global structures of the associated quantum fields. We analyze the example of 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ SYM gauge theory in four dimensions, and we reproduce the well-known classification of global structures from reading between its lines. We extend this analysis to the case of 7d $\mathcal{N}=1$ SYM theory, w…
The usual condensed matter lattice theories do not include dynamical electromagnetic (EM) field and do not have higher symmetries naturally (unless we engineer fine-tuned toy models to realize higher symmetries). However, for gapped systems, (anomalous) higher symmetries can emerge from the usual condensed matter theories at low energies (usually in a spontaneously broken form). We pointed out that spontaneously broken emergent higher symmetries are nothing but a kind of topological orders. The emergent (anomalous) higher symmetries can be used to constrain possible phase transitions and possi…
S-dualities in scale invariant N=2 supersymmetric field theories are derived by embedding those theories in asymptotically free N=2 theories with higher rank gauge groups. S-duality transformations on the coupling of the scale invariant theory follow from global symmetries acting on the Coulomb branch of the higher rank theory. Since these global symmetries are exact in the asymptotically free theory, this shows that S-duality is an exact equivalence of N=2 theories and not just a property of their supersymmetric states.
The fate of shift-symmetries in effective string models is considered beyond tree-level. Such symmetries have been proposed in the past as a way to maintain a hierarchically small Higgs mass and also play a role in schemes of cosmological relaxation. It is argued that on general grounds one expects shift-symmetries to be restored in the limit of certain asymmetric compactifications, to all orders in perturbation theory. This behaviour is verified by explicit computation of the Kaehler potential to one-loop order.
