Continuing our investigations of the analytic structure of the 2->n scattering amplitudes in the planar limit of N=4 SYM in multi-Regge kinematics we compute, in all kinematic regions, the Regge cut contributions of the 2->6 process in leading order. Compared to previous studies of the 2->4 and the 2->5 processes we encounter two new features: the 3-reggon cut and the product of two 2-reggeon cut contributions.
The high-energy limit of gauge-theory amplitudes features both a Regge pole and Regge cuts. We show how to disentangle these, and hence how to determine the Regge trajectory beyond two loops. While the nonplanar part of multiple Reggeon $t$-channel exchange forms a Regge cut, the planar part contributes to the pole along with the single Reggeon. With this, we find that the infrared singularities of the trajectory are given by the cusp anomalous dimension. By matching to recent QCD results, we determine the quark and gluon impact factors to two loops and the Regge trajectory to three loops.
Neglecting spin effects, one introduces here a subtle approximation for the scattering angle, which allows the obtaining of a logarithmic leading Regge pole, consistent with the Froissart-Martin bound. A simple parameterization is also introduced for the proton-proton total cross section. Fitting procedures are implemented only for the highest energy experimental data available. The intercept for a linear approach is obtained, indicating the presence of a soft pomeron. The Tsallis entropy in the impact parameter space is calculated using the Regge pole formalism. This entropy depends on a free…
We study a holographic construction of conformal blocks in the Regge limit of four-point scalar correlation functions by using coordinates of the two-sided Rindler-AdS black hole. As a generalization of geodesic Witten diagrams, we construct diagrams with four external scalar fields in the Rindler-AdS black hole by integrating over two half-geodesics between the centers of Penrose diagrams and points at the AdS boundary. We demonstrate that late-time behaviors of the diagrams coincide with the Regge behaviors of conformal blocks. We also point out their relevance with the pole-skipping phenome…
We revisit the problem of plane monochromatic gravitational waves impinging upon a Schwarzschild black hole using complex angular momentum techniques. By extending our previous study concerning scalar and electromagnetic waves [A. Folacci and M. Ould El Hadj, Phys.\, Rev.\, D {\bf 99}, 104079, (2019), arXiv:1901.03965], we provide complex angular momentum representations and Regge pole approximations of the helicity-preserving and helicity-reversing scattering amplitudes and of the total differential scattering cross section. We show, in particular, that for high frequencies (i.e., in the shor…
We revisit the problem of scalar and electromagnetic waves impinging upon a Schwarzschild black hole from complex angular momentum techniques. We focus more particularly on the associated differential scattering cross sections. We derive an exact representation of the corresponding scattering amplitudes by replacing the discrete sum over integer values of the angular momentum which defines their partial wave expansions by a background integral in the complex angular momentum plane plus a sum over the Regge poles of the $S$-matrix involving the associated residues. We show that, surprisingly, t…
The Regge limit of gauge-theory amplitudes and cross sections is a powerful theory tool for the study of fundamental interactions. It is a vast field of research, encompassing perturbative and non-perturbative dynamics, and ranging from purely theoretical developments to detailed phenomenological applications. It traces its origins to the proposal of Tullio Regge, almost sixty years ago, to study scattering phenomena in the complex angular momentum plane. In this very brief contribution, we look back to the early days of Regge theory, and follow a few of the many strands of its development, re…
We advocate for an alternative description of gravitational radiation from black holes based on complex angular momentum techniques (analytic continuation of partial wave expansions, duality of the ${\cal S}$-matrix and effective resummations involving its Regge poles and the associated residues, Regge trajectories, semiclassical interpretations, etc.). Such techniques, which proved to be very helpful in various areas of physics to describe and analyze resonant scattering, were only marginally used in the context of black hole physics. Here, by considering the multipolar waveform generated by …
A large portion of the studies concerning the quasinormal mode frequencies of a Kerr black hole have focused only on achieving higher numerical accuracy with limited emphasis on providing their physical interpretation. In this article, we partially address this issue by computing the quasinormal mode frequency spectrum of a Kerr black hole using the theory of Regge poles. By considering the retarded Green's function of the Teukolsky equation, we establish for scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations an equation linking the Regge poles to the quasinormal frequencies and we solve …
The theoretical motivations that led Tullio Regge to investigate the analytical properties of the scattering amplitude of the collision process between two particles in terms of complex energy and complex angular momentum are briefly reviewed and set in the context of the S-matrix theory that was developed in the late Fifties and early Sixties of the last century, in an attempt to unravel the properties of the strong interaction.
We study the Regge trajectories of the Mellin amplitudes of the $0-,1-$ and $2-$ magnon correlators of the Fishnet theory. Since fishnet theory is both integrable and conformal, the correlation functions are known exactly. We find that while for $0$ and $1$ magnon correlators, the Regge poles can be exactly determined as a function of coupling, $2$-magnon correlators can only be dealt with perturbatively. We evaluate the resulting Mellin amplitudes at weak coupling, while for strong coupling we do an order of magnitude calculation.
We study the problem of plane monochromatic scalar waves impinging upon a Schwarzschild dirty black hole -- a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by a thin spherical shell of matter -- using the complex angular momentum approach. We first recall general results concerning the differential scattering cross section in the classical limit through a null geodesic analysis by exploring different configurations of the shell. In particular, we show that dirty black hole spacetimes may exhibit various critical effects for geometrical optics. We compute the Regge pole spectrum for various shell configu…
The high-energy limit of $2\to 2$ scattering amplitudes offers an excellent setting to explore the universal features of gauge theories. At Leading Logarithmic (LL) accuracy the partonic amplitude is governed by Regge poles in the complex angular momentum plane. Beyond LL, Regge cuts in this plane begin to play an important role. Specifically, the real part of the amplitude at Next-to-Next-to-Leading Logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy presents for the first time both a Regge pole and a Regge cut. Analysing this tower of logarithms and computing it explicitly through four loops we are able to systemat…
Motivated by the goal of understanding quantum systems away from maximal chaos, in this note we derive a simple closed form expression for the fermion four point function of the large $q$ SYK model valid at arbitrary temperatures and to leading order in $1/N$. The result captures both the large temperature, weakly coupled regime, and the low temperature, nearly conformal, maximally chaotic regime of the model. The derivation proceeds by the Sommerfeld-Watson resummation of an infinite series that recasts the four point function as a sum of three Regge poles. The location of these poles determi…
Using rapidity evolution equations we study two-to-two gauge-theory scattering amplitudes in the Regge limit. We carry out explicit computations at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy through four loops and present new results for both infrared-singular and finite contributions to the amplitude. New techniques are devised in order to derive the colour structure stemming from three-Reggeon exchange diagrams in terms of commutators of channel operators, obtaining results that are valid for any gauge group, and apply to scattered particles in any colour representation. We also elucidate …
We consider the multi-Regge limit for N=4 SYM NMHV leading color amplitudes in two different formulations: the BFKL formalism for multi-Regge amplitudes in leading logarithm approximation, and superconformal N=4 SYM amplitudes. It is shown that the two approaches agree to two-loops for the 2->4 and 3->3 six-point amplitudes. Predictions are made for the multi-Regge limit of three loop 2->4 and 3->3 NMHV amplitudes, as well as a particular sub-set of two loop 2 ->2 +n N^kMHV amplitudes in the multi-Regge limit in the leading logarithm approximation from the BFKL point of view.
We describe a general algorithm for the computation of the remainder function for n-gluon scattering in multi-Regge kinematics for strongly coupled planar N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. This regime is accessible through the infrared physics of an auxiliary quantum integrable system describing strings in AdS5xS5. Explicit formulas are presented for n=6 and n=7 external gluons. Our results are consistent with expectations from perturbative gauge theory. This paper comprises the technical details for the results announced in arXiv:1405.3658 .
We study the symbol of the two-loop n-gluon MHV amplitude for all Mandelstam regions in multi-Regge kinematics in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. While the number of distinct Mandelstam regions grows exponentially with n, the increase of independent symbols turns out to be merely quadratic. We uncover how to construct the symbols for any number of external gluons from just two building blocks which are naturally associated with the six- and seven-gluon amplitude, respectively. The second building block is entirely new, and in addition to its symbol, we also construct a prototype function that cor…
A novel way of computing high-order amplitudes in the multi-Regge limit of planar maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is presented. In this framework, we are able to obtain high-loop and high-leg results by an easy operation on known amplitudes with fewer loops and lower multiplicity. This mechanism will be reviewed, along with an ensuing factorisation which allows us to determine leading logarithmic MHV results for any number of legs at a fixed loop order.
We review the systematics of Mandelstam cut contributions to planar scattering amplitudes in the multi-Regge limit. Isolating the relevant cut terms, we explain how the BFKL expansion can be used to construct the perturbative n-point multi-Regge limit amplitude in certain kinematic regions from a finite number of basic building blocks. At three loops and at leading logarithmic order, two building blocks are required. Their symbols are extracted from the known three-loop six-point and seven-point symbols for general kinematics. The new seven-point building block is constructed in terms of singl…
By using complex angular momentum techniques, we study the electromagnetic radiation generated by a charged particle falling radially from infinity into a Schwarzschild black hole. We consider both the case of a particle initially at rest and that of a particle projected with a relativistic velocity and we construct complex angular momentum representations and Regge pole approximations of the partial wave expansions defining the Maxwell scalar $ϕ_2$ and the energy spectrum $dE/dω$ observed at spatial infinity. We show, in particular, that Regge pole approximations involving only one Regge pole…
In this second part of our investigation of the analytic structure of the $2\to5$ scattering amplitude in the planar limit of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM in multi-Regge kinematics we compute, in all kinematic regions, the Regge cut contributions in leading order. The results are infrared finite and conformally invariant.
We consider the description of reggeon amplitudes (Wilson lines form factors) in N=4 SYM within the framework of four dimensional ambitwistor string theory. The latter is used to derive scattering equations representation for reggeon amplitudes with multiple reggeized gluons present. It is shown, that corresponding tree-level string correlation function correctly reproduces previously obtained Grassmannian integral representation of reggeon amplitudes in N=4 SYM.
In this paper we present the all-loop conjecture for integrands of Wilson line form factors, also known as reggeon amplitudes, in N=4 SYM. In particular we present a new gluing operation in momentum twistor space used to obtain reggeon tree-level amplitudes and loop integrands starting from corresponding expressions for on-shell amplitudes. The introduced gluing procedure is used to derive BCFW recursions both for tree-level reggeon amplitudes and their loop integrands. In addition we provide predictions for reggeon loop integrands written in the basis of local integrals. As a check of the cor…
We introduce a method to extract the symbol of the coefficient of $(2πi)^2$ of MHV remainder functions in planar N=4 Super Yang-Mills in multi-Regge kinematics region directly from the symbol in full kinematics. At two loops this symbol can be uplifted to the full function in a unique way, without any beyond-the-symbol ambiguities. We can therefore determine all two-loop MHV amplitudes at function level in all kinematic regions with different energy signs in multi-Regge kinematics. We analyse our results and we observe that they are consistent with the hypothesis of a contribution from the exc…
We examine in detail the structure of the Regge limit of the (nonplanar) ${\cal N}=4$ SYM four-point amplitude. We begin by developing a basis of color factors $C_{ik}$ suitable for the Regge limit of the amplitude at any loop order, and then calculate explicitly the coefficients of the amplitude in that basis through three-loop order using the Regge limit of the full amplitude previously calculated by Henn and Mistlberger. We compute these coefficients exactly at one loop, through ${\cal O} (ε^2)$ at two loops, and through ${\cal O} (ε^0)$ at three loops, verifying that the IR-divergent piece…
A previously proposed all-loop-orders relation between the Regge limits of four-point amplitudes of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and N=8 supergravity is established at the three-loop level. We show that the Regge limit of known expressions for the amplitudes obtained using generalized unitarity simplifies in both cases to a (modified) sum over three-loop ladder and crossed-ladder scalar diagrams. This in turn is consistent with the result obtained using the eikonal representation of the four-point gravity amplitude. A possible exact three-loop relation between four-point amplitudes is …
We study the validity of positivity bounds in the presence of a massless graviton, assuming the Regge behavior of the amplitude. Under this assumption, the problematic $t$-channel pole is canceled with the UV integral of the imaginary part of the amplitude in the dispersion relation, which gives rise to finite corrections to the positivity bounds. We find that low-energy effective field theories (EFT) with "wrong" sign are generically allowed. The allowed amount of the positivity violation is determined by the Regge behavior. This violation is suppressed by $M_{\rm pl}^{-2}α'$ where $α'$ is th…
We compute the three-loop helicity amplitudes for $q\bar{q} \to gg$ and its crossed partonic channels, in massless QCD. Our analytical results provide a non-trivial check of the color quadrupole contribution to the infrared poles for external states in different color representations. At high energies, the $qg \to qg$ amplitude shows the predicted factorized form from Regge theory and confirms previous results for the gluon Regge trajectory extracted from $qq' \to qq'$ and $gg \to gg$ scattering.
