We revisit the problem of plane monochromatic gravitational waves impinging upon a Schwarzschild black hole using complex angular momentum techniques. By extending our previous study concerning scalar and electromagnetic waves [A. Folacci and M. Ould El Hadj, Phys.\, Rev.\, D {\bf 99}, 104079, (2019), arXiv:1901.03965], we provide complex angular momentum representations and Regge pole approximations of the helicity-preserving and helicity-reversing scattering amplitudes and of the total differential scattering cross section. We show, in particular, that for high frequencies (i.e., in the short-wavelength regime), a small number of Regge poles permits us to describe numerically with very good agreement the black hole glory and the orbiting oscillations and we then provide a semiclassical approximation that unifies these two phenomena.
We provide simple and accurate analytical expressions for the Regge poles of the Schwarzschild black hole. This is achieved by using third-order WKB approximations to solve the radial wave equations for spins 0, 1 and 2. These results permit us to obtain analytically the dispersion relation and the damping of the "surface waves" lying on the photon sphere of the Schwarzschild black hole and which generate the weakly damped quasinormal modes of its spectrum. Our results could be helpful in order to simplify considerably the description of wave scattering from the Schwarzschild black hole as wel…

We study a holographic construction of conformal blocks in the Regge limit of four-point scalar correlation functions by using coordinates of the two-sided Rindler-AdS black hole. As a generalization of geodesic Witten diagrams, we construct diagrams with four external scalar fields in the Rindler-AdS black hole by integrating over two half-geodesics between the centers of Penrose diagrams and points at the AdS boundary. We demonstrate that late-time behaviors of the diagrams coincide with the Regge behaviors of conformal blocks. We also point out their relevance with the pole-skipping phenome…
We revisit the problem of scalar and electromagnetic waves impinging upon a Schwarzschild black hole from complex angular momentum techniques. We focus more particularly on the associated differential scattering cross sections. We derive an exact representation of the corresponding scattering amplitudes by replacing the discrete sum over integer values of the angular momentum which defines their partial wave expansions by a background integral in the complex angular momentum plane plus a sum over the Regge poles of the $S$-matrix involving the associated residues. We show that, surprisingly, t…
In ``Global existence and scattering for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation on Schwarzschild manifolds'' (math-ph/0002030), ``Semilinear wave equations on the Schwarzschild manifold I: Local Decay Estimates'' (gr-qc/0310091), and ``The wave equation on the Schwarzschild metric II: Local Decay for the spin 2 Regge Wheeler equation'' (gr-qc/0310066), local decay estimates were proven for the (decoupled) Schrodinger, wave, and Regge-Wheeler equations on the Schwarzschild manifold, using commutator methods. Here, we correct a step in the commutator argument. The corrected argument works either for…
We advocate for an alternative description of gravitational radiation from black holes based on complex angular momentum techniques (analytic continuation of partial wave expansions, duality of the ${\cal S}$-matrix and effective resummations involving its Regge poles and the associated residues, Regge trajectories, semiclassical interpretations, etc.). Such techniques, which proved to be very helpful in various areas of physics to describe and analyze resonant scattering, were only marginally used in the context of black hole physics. Here, by considering the multipolar waveform generated by …
We solve exactly the Regge-Wheeler equation for axial perturbations of the Schwarzschild metric in the black hole interior in terms of Heun functions and give a description of the spectrum and the eigenfunctions of the interior problem. The phenomenon of attraction and repulsion of the discrete eigenvalues of gravitational waves is discovered.
A large portion of the studies concerning the quasinormal mode frequencies of a Kerr black hole have focused only on achieving higher numerical accuracy with limited emphasis on providing their physical interpretation. In this article, we partially address this issue by computing the quasinormal mode frequency spectrum of a Kerr black hole using the theory of Regge poles. By considering the retarded Green's function of the Teukolsky equation, we establish for scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations an equation linking the Regge poles to the quasinormal frequencies and we solve …
Reconsideration of the Regge-Wheeler equation is processed by using the Painlevé coordinate and "good" timelier to define the initial time. We find that: the Regge-Wheeler equation could has positive imaginary frequency. Because the Regge-Wheeler equation is the odd (angular) perturbation to the Schwarzschild black hole, the conclusion is that the Schwarzschild black hole is unstable with respect to the rotating perturbation.
We study the problem of plane monochromatic scalar waves impinging upon a Schwarzschild dirty black hole -- a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by a thin spherical shell of matter -- using the complex angular momentum approach. We first recall general results concerning the differential scattering cross section in the classical limit through a null geodesic analysis by exploring different configurations of the shell. In particular, we show that dirty black hole spacetimes may exhibit various critical effects for geometrical optics. We compute the Regge pole spectrum for various shell configu…
We consider a wide class of static spherically symmetric black holes of arbitrary dimension with a photon sphere (a hypersurface on which a massless particle can orbit the black hole on unstable circular null geodesics). This class includes various spacetimes of physical interest such as Schwarzschild, Schwarzschild-Tangherlini and Reissner-Nordström black holes, the canonical acoustic black hole or the Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole. For this class of black holes, we provide general analytical expressions for the Regge poles of the $S$-matrix associated with a massless scalar field theory…
We compute the quasinormal mode frequencies and Regge poles of the canonical acoustic hole (a black hole analogue), using three methods. First, we show how damped oscillations arise by evolving generic perturbations in the time domain using a simple finite-difference scheme. We use our results to estimate the fundamental QN frequencies of the low multipolar modes $l=1, 2, \ldots$. Next, we apply an asymptotic method to obtain an expansion for the frequency in inverse powers of $l+1/2$ for low overtones. We test the expansion by comparing against our time-domain results, and (existing) WKB resu…
Odd-type spin 2 perturbations of Einstein's equation can be reduced to the scalar Regge-Wheeler equation. We show that the weighted norms of solutions are in L^2 of time and space. This result uses commutator methods and applies uniformly to all relevant spherical harmonics.
We calculate the Regge poles of the scattering matrix for a gravitating compact body, for scalar fields and for gravitational waves in the axial sector. For a neutron-starlike body, the spectrum exhibits two distinct branches of poles, labeled surface waves and broad resonances; for ultracompact objects, the spectrum also includes a finite number of narrow resonances. We show, via a WKB analysis, that the discontinuity of the effective potential at the body's surface determines the imaginary component of the broad-resonance poles. Next, we examine the role of Regge poles in the time-independen…
By using complex angular momentum techniques, we study the electromagnetic radiation generated by a charged particle falling radially from infinity into a Schwarzschild black hole. We consider both the case of a particle initially at rest and that of a particle projected with a relativistic velocity and we construct complex angular momentum representations and Regge pole approximations of the partial wave expansions defining the Maxwell scalar $ϕ_2$ and the energy spectrum $dE/dω$ observed at spatial infinity. We show, in particular, that Regge pole approximations involving only one Regge pole…
The equations governing the perturbations of the Schwarzschild metric satisfy the Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli-Moncrief system. Applying the technique introduced in [2], we prove an integrated local energy decay estimate for both the Regge-Wheeler and Zerilli equations. In these proofs, we use some constants that are computed numerically. Furthermore, we make use of the $r^p$ hierarchy estimates [13, 32] to prove that both the Regge-Wheeler and Zerilli variables decay as $t^{-\frac{3}{2}}$ in fixed regions of $r$.
The Regge-Wheeler equation describes the axial perturbations of Schwarzschild metric in linear approximation. We present its exact solutions in terms of the confluent Heun's functions, the basic properties of the general solution, novel analytical approach and numerical techniques for study of different boundary problems which correspond to quasi-normal modes of black holes and other simple models of compact objects. We depict in more detail the exact solutions of Regge-Wheeler equation in the Schwarzschild black hole interior and on Kruscal-Szekeres manifold.
We present a new method for determining the frequencies and wavefunctions of black hole quasinormal modes (QNMs) and Regge poles. The key idea is a novel ansatz for the wavefunction, which relates the high-$l$ wavefunctions to null geodesics which start at infinity and end in perpetual orbit on the photon sphere. Our ansatz leads naturally to the expansion of QNMs in inverse powers of angular momentum $L = l + 1/2$ (in 4D), and to the expansion of Regge poles in inverse powers of frequency. The expansions can be taken to high orders. We begin by applying the method to the Schwarzschild spaceti…
We consider the vector and the Lichnerowicz wave equations on the Schwarzschild spacetime, which correspond to the Maxwell and linearized Einstein equations in harmonic gauges (or, respectively, in Lorenz and de Donder gauges). After a complete separation of variables, the radial mode equations form complicated systems of coupled linear ODEs. We outline a precise abstract strategy to decouple these systems into sparse triangular form, where the diagonal blocks consist of spin-$s$ scalar Regge-Wheeler equations (for spins $s=0,1,2$). Building on the example of the vector wave equation, which we…
Greybody factors in black hole physics modify the naive Planckian spectrum that is predicted for Hawking radiation when working in the limit of geometrical optics. We consider the Schwarzschild geometry in (3+1) dimensions, and analyze the Regge-Wheeler equation for arbitrary particle spin S and wave-mode angular momentum L, deriving rigourous bounds on the greybody factors as a function of S, L, wave frequency (omega), and the black hole mass, m.
We calculate the odd-parity, radiative ($\ell \ge 2$) parts of the metric perturbation in Lorenz gauge caused by a small compact object in eccentric orbit about a Schwarzschild black hole. The Lorenz gauge solution is found via gauge transformation from a corresponding one in Regge-Wheeler gauge. Like the Regge-Wheeler gauge solution itself, the gauge generator is computed in the frequency domain and transferred to the time domain. The wave equation for the gauge generator has a source with a compact, moving delta-function term and a discontinuous non-compact term. The former term allows the m…
We present a method of post-Newtonian expansion to solve the homogeneous Regge-Wheeler equation which describes gravitational waves on the Schwarzschild spacetime. The advantage of our method is that it allows a systematic iterative analysis of the solution. Then we obtain the Regge-Wheeler function which is purely ingoing at the horizon in closed analytic form, with accuracy required to determine the gravitational wave luminosity to (post)$^{4}$-Newtonian order (i.e., order $v^8$ beyond Newtonian) from a particle orbiting around a Schwarzschild black hole. Our result, valid in the small-mass …
Beginning with the pioneering work of Regge and Wheeler (Phys. Rev. 108, 1957), there have been many studies of perturbations away from the Schwarzschild spacetime background. In particular several authors (e.g. Moncrief, Ann. Phys 88, 1974) have investigated gauge invariant quantities of the Regge-Wheeler (RW) gauge. Steven Detweiler also investigated perturbations of Schwarzschild in his own gauge, which he denoted the "easy (EZ) gauge", and which he was in the process of adapting for use in the second-order self-force problem. We present here a compilation of some of his working results, ar…
We develop the complex angular momentum method in the context of the BTZ black hole physics. This is achieved by extending a formalism introduced a long time ago by Arnold Sommerfeld, which allows us to define and use the Regge pole concept in a framework where the notion of an $S$ matrix does not exist. The Regge poles of the BTZ black hole are exactly obtained and from the associated Regge trajectories we determine its quasinormal mode complex frequencies. Furthermore, our approach permits us to physically interpret them: they appear as Breit-Wigner-type resonances generated by surface waves…
We consider a Schwarzschild type solution in the discrete Regge calculus formulation of general relativity quantized within the path integral approach. Earlier, we found a mechanism of a loose fixation of the background scale of Regge lengths. This elementary length scale is defined by the Planck scale and some free parameter of such a quantum extension of the theory. Besides, Regge action was reduced to an expansion over metric variations between the tetrahedra and, in the main approximation, is a finite-difference form of the Hilbert-Einstein action. Using for the Schwarzschild problem a pri…
We consider the vector wave equation on the Schwarzschild spacetime, which can be considered as coming from the harmonic (or Lorenz) gauge fixed Maxwell equations. After a separation of variables, the radial mode equations form a complicated system of coupled linear ODEs. We outline a precise abstract strategy to decouple this system into triangular form, where the diagonal blocks consist of spin-$s$ scalar Regge-Wheeler equations, with $s=0$ or $1$. This strategy is then implemented to give an explicit transformation of the radial mode equations (with nonzero frequency and angular momentum) i…
The Regge-Wheeler equation describes axial perturbations of Schwarzschild metric in linear approximation. Teukolsky Master Equation describes perturbations of Kerr metric in the same approximation. We present here unified description of all classes of exact solutions to these equations in terms of the confluent Heun's functions. Special attention is paid to the polynomial solutions, which yield novel applications of Teukolsky Master Equation for description of relativistic jets and astrophysical explosions.
We reexamine some aspects of scattering by a Schwarzschild black hole in the framework of complex angular momentum techniques. More precisely, we consider, for massive scalar perturbations, the high-energy behavior of the resonance spectrum and of the absorption cross section by emphasizing analytically the role of the mass. This is achieved (i) by deriving asymptotic expansions for the Regge poles of the $S$-matrix and then for the associated weakly damped quasinormal frequencies and (ii) by taking into account the analytic structure of the greybody factors which allows us to extract by resum…
We study linear gravitational perturbations of Schwarzschild spacetime by solving numerically Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli equations in time domain using hyperboloidal surfaces and a compactifying radial coordinate. We stress the importance of including the asymptotic region in the computational domain in studies of gravitational radiation. The hyperboloidal approach should be helpful in a wide range of applications employing black hole perturbation theory.
We derive a geometrical version of the Regge-Wheeler and Zerilli equations, which allows us to study gravitational perturbations on an arbitrary spherically symmetric slicing of a Schwarzschild black hole. We explain how to obtain the gauge-invariant part of the metric perturbations from the amplitudes obeying our generalized Regge-Wheeler and Zerilli equations and vice-versa. We also give a general expression for the radiated energy at infinity, and establish the relation between our geometrical equations and the Teukolsky formalism. The results presented in this paper are expected to be usef…
We perform the stability analysis of the Schwarzschild black hole in $f(R)$ gravity with the parity-violating Chern-Simons (CS) term coupled to a dynamical scalar field $θ$. For this purpose, we transform the $f(R)$ gravity into the scalar-tensor theory by introducing a scalaron $ϕ$, providing the dynamical Chern-Simons modified gravity with two scalars. The perturbation equation for the scalar $θ$ is coupled to the odd-parity metric perturbation equation, providing a system of two coupled second order equations, while the scalaron is coupled to the even-parity perturbation equation. This impl…
A Regge--Wheeler analysis is performed for a novel black hole mimicker `the regular black hole with asymptotically Minkowski core', followed by an approximation of the permitted quasi-normal modes for propagating waveforms. A first-order WKB approximation is computed for spin zero and spin one perturbations of the candidate spacetime. Subsequently, numerical results analysing the respective fundamental modes are compiled for various values of the $a$ parameter (which quantifies the distortion from Schwarzschild spacetime), and for various multipole numbers $\ell$. Both electromagnetic spin one…
We prove sharp pointwise $t^{-3}$ decay for scalar linear perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole without symmetry assumptions on the data. We also consider electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations for which we obtain decay rates $t^{-4}$, and $t^{-6}$, respectively. We proceed by decomposition into angular momentum $\ell$ and summation of the decay estimates on the Regge-Wheeler equation for fixed $\ell$. We encounter a dichotomy: the decay law in time is entirely determined by the asymptotic behavior of the Regge-Wheeler potential in the far field, whereas the growth of the consta…
We consider perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole that can be of both even and odd parity, keeping terms up to second order in perturbation theory, for the $\ell=2$ axisymmetric case. We develop explicit formulae for the evolution equations and radiated energies and waveforms using the Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli approach. This formulation is useful, for instance, for the treatment in the ``close limit approximation'' of the collision of counterrotating black holes.
Under certain conditions, sound waves in a fluid may be governed by a Klein-Gordon equation on an `effective spacetime' determined by the background flow properties. Here we consider the draining bathtub: a circulating, draining flow whose effective spacetime shares key features with the rotating black hole (Kerr) spacetime. We present a complete investigation of the role of quasinormal (QN) mode and Regge pole (RP) resonances of this system. First, we simulate a perturbation in the time domain by applying a finite-difference method, to demonstrate the ubiquity of `QN ringing'. Next, we solve …
In this paper, we consider a massless field, with spin j, in interaction with a Schwarzschild black hole in four dimensions, focusing mainly our study on the s-wave scattering. First, using a Fourier analysis, we show that one can have a simple and natural description of the Physics near the event horizon without using any conformal field approaches. Then, within the same "scattering picture", we derive analytically the imaginary part of the highly damped quasinormal complex frequencies and, as a natural consequence of our analysis, we show that thermal effects and in particular Hawking radiat…
We perform a covariant (Lagrangian) quantization of perturbative gravity in the background of a Schwarzschild black hole. The key tool is a decomposition of the field into spherical harmonics. We fix Regge-Wheeler gauge for modes with angular momentum quantum number $l \geq 2$, while for low multipole modes with $l$ $=$ $0$ or $1$ -- for which Regge-Wheeler gauge is inapplicable -- we propose a set of gauge fixing conditions which are 2D background covariant and perturbatively well-defined. We find that the corresponding Faddeev-Popov ghosts are non-propagating for the $l\geq2$ modes, but are …
The stability of the Schwarzschild black hole is studied. Regge and Wheeler treated the problem first at 1957 and obtained the dynamical equations for the small perturbation. There are two kinds of perturbations: odd one and even one. Using the Painlevé coordinate, we reconsider the odd perturbation and find that: the white-hole-connected universe(r>2m, see text) is unstable. Because the odd perturbation may be regarded as the angular perturbation, therefore, the physical mean to it may be that the white-hole-connected universe is unstable with respect to the rotating perturbation.
Gravitational perturbations due to a point particle moving on a static black hole background are naturally described in Regge-Wheeler gauge. The first-order field equations reduce to a single master wave equation for each radiative mode. The master function satisfying this wave equation is a linear combination of the metric perturbation amplitudes with a source term arising from the stress-energy tensor of the point particle. The original master functions were found by Regge and Wheeler (odd parity) and Zerilli (even parity). Subsequent work by Moncrief and then Cunningham, Price and Moncrief …
Using recently developed efficient symbolic manipulations tools, we present a general gauge-invariant formalism to study arbitrary radiative $(l\geq 2)$ second-order perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole. In particular, we construct the second order Zerilli and Regge-Wheeler equations under the presence of any two first-order modes, reconstruct the perturbed metric in terms of the master scalars, and compute the radiated energy at null infinity. The results of this paper enable systematic studies of generic second order perturbations of the Schwarzschild spacetime. In particular, studies…
We present numerical results for the gravitational self-force and redshift invariant calculated in the Regge-Wheeler and Easy gauges for circular orbits in a Schwarzschild background, utilizing the regularization framework introduced by Pound, Merlin, and Barack. The numerical calculation is performed in the frequency domain and requires the integration of a single second-order ODE, greatly improving computation times over more traditional Lorenz gauge numerical methods. A sufficiently high-order, analytic expansion of the Detweiler-Whiting singular field is gauge-transformed to both the Regge…
A Schwarzschild type solution in Regge calculus is considered. Earlier, we considered a mechanism of loose fixing of edge lengths due to the functional integral measure arising from integration over connection in the functional integral for the connection representation of the Regge action. The length scale depends on a free dimensionless parameter that determines the final functional measure. For this parameter and the length scale large in Planck units, the resulting effective action is close to the Regge action. Earlier, we considered the Regge action in terms of affine connection matrices …
We address some of the issues that appear in the study of back reaction in Schwarzschild backgrounds. Our main object is the effective energy-momentum tensor (EEMT) of gravitational perturbations. It is commonly held that only asymptotically flat or radiation gauges can be employed for these purposes. We show that the traditional Regge-Wheeler gauge for the perturbations of the Schwarszchild metric can also be used for computing physical quantities both at the horizon and at infinity. In particular, we find that the physically relevant components of the EEMT of gravitational perturbations have…
We present a new covariant and gauge-invariant perturbation formalism for dealing with spacetimes having spherical symmetry (or some preferred spatial direction) in the background, and apply it to the case of gravitational wave propagation in a Schwarzschild black hole spacetime. The 1+3 covariant approach is extended to a `1+1+2 covariant sheet' formalism by introducing a radial unit vector in addition to the timelike congruence, and decomposing all covariant quantities with respect to this. The background Schwarzschild solution is discussed and a covariant characterisation is given. We give …
The axial and polar modes for the ring down of a Schwarzschild black hole are calculated, by first deriving the Regge-Wheeler and Zerilli equations, respectively, and finally applying the Asymptotic Iteration Method (AIM). We were able to reach up to 500 iterations, obtaining for the first time convergence for a wide range of large damping modes. The General Relativity (GR) and a particular version of an extended model with an r-dependent mass-function are compared. This mass-function allows an analytical solution for the Tortoise coordinate. The example of the mass-function corresponds to the…
We numerically solve the inhomogeneous Zerilli-Moncrief and Regge-Wheeler equations in the time domain. We obtain the gravitational waveforms produced by a point-particle of mass $μ$ traveling around a Schwarzschild black hole of mass M on arbitrary bound and unbound orbits. Fluxes of energy and angular momentum at infinity and the event horizon are also calculated. Results for circular orbits, selected cases of eccentric orbits, and parabolic orbits are presented. The numerical results from the time-domain code indicate that, for all three types of orbital motion, black hole absorption contri…
