We present a new method for determining the frequencies and wavefunctions of black hole quasinormal modes (QNMs) and Regge poles. The key idea is a novel ansatz for the wavefunction, which relates the high-$l$ wavefunctions to null geodesics which start at infinity and end in perpetual orbit on the photon sphere. Our ansatz leads naturally to the expansion of QNMs in inverse powers of angular momentum $L = l + 1/2$ (in 4D), and to the expansion of Regge poles in inverse powers of frequency. The expansions can be taken to high orders. We begin by applying the method to the Schwarzschild spacetime, and validate our results against existing numerical and WKB methods. Next, we generalise the method to treat static spherically-symmetric spacetimes of arbitrary spatial dimension. We confirm that, at lowest order, the real and imaginary components of the QNM frequency are related to the orbital frequency and the Lyapunov exponent for geodesics at the unstable orbit. We apply the method to five spacetimes of current interest, and conclude with a discussion of the advantages and limitations of the new approach, and its practical applications.
A large portion of the studies concerning the quasinormal mode frequencies of a Kerr black hole have focused only on achieving higher numerical accuracy with limited emphasis on providing their physical interpretation. In this article, we partially address this issue by computing the quasinormal mode frequency spectrum of a Kerr black hole using the theory of Regge poles. By considering the retarded Green's function of the Teukolsky equation, we establish for scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations an equation linking the Regge poles to the quasinormal frequencies and we solve …
Based on the well known fact that the quasinormal frequencies are the poles of the frequency domain Green's function we describe a method that allows us to calculate exactly the quasinormal frequencies of the Klein-Gordon field moving in the three-dimensional rotating BTZ black hole. These quasinormal frequencies are already published and widely explored in several applications, but we use this example to expound the proposed method of computation. We think that the described procedure can be useful to calculate exactly the quasinormal frequencies of classical fields propagating in other backg…
It is known that approximating the Regge-Wheeler Potential with step functions significantly modifies the Schwarzschild black hole quasinormal mode spectrum. Surprisingly, this change in the spectrum has little impact on the ringdown waveform. We examine whether this issue is caused by the jump discontinuities and/or the piecewise constant nature of step functions. We show that replacing the step functions with a continuous piecewise linear function does not qualitatively change the results. However, in contrast to previously published results, we discover that the ringdown waveform can be app…
We calculate the Regge poles of the scattering matrix for a gravitating compact body, for scalar fields and for gravitational waves in the axial sector. For a neutron-starlike body, the spectrum exhibits two distinct branches of poles, labeled surface waves and broad resonances; for ultracompact objects, the spectrum also includes a finite number of narrow resonances. We show, via a WKB analysis, that the discontinuity of the effective potential at the body's surface determines the imaginary component of the broad-resonance poles. Next, we examine the role of Regge poles in the time-independen…

We study a holographic construction of conformal blocks in the Regge limit of four-point scalar correlation functions by using coordinates of the two-sided Rindler-AdS black hole. As a generalization of geodesic Witten diagrams, we construct diagrams with four external scalar fields in the Rindler-AdS black hole by integrating over two half-geodesics between the centers of Penrose diagrams and points at the AdS boundary. We demonstrate that late-time behaviors of the diagrams coincide with the Regge behaviors of conformal blocks. We also point out their relevance with the pole-skipping phenome…
We revisit the problem of plane monochromatic gravitational waves impinging upon a Schwarzschild black hole using complex angular momentum techniques. By extending our previous study concerning scalar and electromagnetic waves [A. Folacci and M. Ould El Hadj, Phys.\, Rev.\, D {\bf 99}, 104079, (2019), arXiv:1901.03965], we provide complex angular momentum representations and Regge pole approximations of the helicity-preserving and helicity-reversing scattering amplitudes and of the total differential scattering cross section. We show, in particular, that for high frequencies (i.e., in the shor…
We revisit the problem of scalar and electromagnetic waves impinging upon a Schwarzschild black hole from complex angular momentum techniques. We focus more particularly on the associated differential scattering cross sections. We derive an exact representation of the corresponding scattering amplitudes by replacing the discrete sum over integer values of the angular momentum which defines their partial wave expansions by a background integral in the complex angular momentum plane plus a sum over the Regge poles of the $S$-matrix involving the associated residues. We show that, surprisingly, t…
Gravitational lensing in the weak field limit, quasinormal spectra, and gray-body factors are investigated in the Reissner-Nordström spacetime corrected by bounce parameters. Using the Gauss-Bonnet theorem, we analyze the effects of bounce corrections to the weak gravitational deflection angle and find that the divergence of the deflection angle can be suppressed by a bounce correction in the Reissner-Nordström spacetime. We also notice that the bounce correction plays the same role as the Morse potential in the deflection angle. Moreover, we derive the perturbation equations with the spin-dep…
The quasinormal frequencies of massive scalar fields on Kerr-AdS black holes are identified with poles of a certain meromorphic family of operators, once boundary conditions are specified at the conformal boundary. Consequently, the quasinormal frequencies form a discrete subset of the complex plane and the corresponding poles are of finite rank. This result holds for a broad class of elliptic boundary conditions, with no restrictions on the rotation speed of the black hole.
We advocate for an alternative description of gravitational radiation from black holes based on complex angular momentum techniques (analytic continuation of partial wave expansions, duality of the ${\cal S}$-matrix and effective resummations involving its Regge poles and the associated residues, Regge trajectories, semiclassical interpretations, etc.). Such techniques, which proved to be very helpful in various areas of physics to describe and analyze resonant scattering, were only marginally used in the context of black hole physics. Here, by considering the multipolar waveform generated by …

As gravitational waves are now being nearly routinely measured with interferometers, the question of using them to probe new physics becomes increasingly legitimate. In this article, we rely on a well established framework to investigate how the complex frequencies of quasinormal modes are affected by different models. The tendencies are explicitly shown, for both the pulsation and the damping rate. The goal is, at this stage, purely qualitative. This opportunity is also taken to derive the Regge-Wheeler equation for general static and spherically symmetric metrics.
We study the problem of plane monochromatic scalar waves impinging upon a Schwarzschild dirty black hole -- a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by a thin spherical shell of matter -- using the complex angular momentum approach. We first recall general results concerning the differential scattering cross section in the classical limit through a null geodesic analysis by exploring different configurations of the shell. In particular, we show that dirty black hole spacetimes may exhibit various critical effects for geometrical optics. We compute the Regge pole spectrum for various shell configu…

In this work, quasinormal modes (QNMs) of the Schwarzschild black hole are investigated by taking into account the quantum fluctuations. Gravitational and Dirac perturbations were considered for this case. The Regge-Wheeler gauge and the Dirac equation were used to derive the perturbation equations of the gravitational and Dirac fields respectively and the third order Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation method is used for the computing of the quasinormal frequencies. The results show that due to the quantum fluctuations in the background of the Schwarzschild black hole, the QNMs of t…
The parametrized black hole quasinormal ringdown formalism is useful to compute quasinormal mode (QNM) frequencies if a master equation for the gravitational perturbation around a black hole has a small deviation from the Regge-Wheeler or Zerilli equation. In this formalism, the deviation of QNM frequency from general relativity can be calculated by small deviation parameters and model independent coefficients. In this paper, we derive recursion relations for the model independent coefficients. Using these relations, the higher order coefficients are written only by the lower order coefficient…
Quasi-Normal Modes (QNM) or ringdown phase of gravitational waves provide critical information about the structure of compact objects like Black Holes. Thus, QNMs can be a tool to test General Relativity (GR) and possible deviations from it. In the case of GR, it is known for a long time that a relation between two types of Black Hole perturbations: scalar (Zerilli) and vector (Regge-Wheeler), leads to an equal share of emitted gravitational energy. With the direct detection of Gravitational waves, it is now natural to ask: whether the same relation (between scalar and vector perturbations) ho…
Recently, the Effective Field Theory (EFT) of perturbations on an arbitrary background metric with a timelike scalar profile was formulated in the context of scalar-tensor theories. Here, we generalize the dictionary between the coefficients in the EFT action and those in covariant theories to accommodate shift- and reflection-symmetric quadratic higher-order scalar-tensor theories, including DHOST as well as U-DHOST. We then use the EFT action to study the dynamics of odd-parity perturbations on a static and spherically symmetric black hole background with a timelike scalar profile. Finally, …
We construct higher spin quasinormal modes algebraically in $D$-dimensional de Sitter spacetime using the ambient space formalism. The quasinormal modes fall into two nonunitary lowest-weight representations of $\mathfrak{so}(1, D)$. From a local QFT point of view, the lowest-weight quasinormal modes of massless higher spin fields are produced by gauge-invariant boundary conserved currents and boundary higher-spin Weyl tensors inserted at the southern pole of the past boundary. We also show that the quasinormal spectrum of a massless/massive spin-$s$ field is precisely encoded in the Harish-Ch…
In a recent series of papers we have shown how the eikonal/geometrical optics approximation can be used to calculate analytically the fundamental quasinormal mode frequencies associated with coupled systems of wave equations, which arise, for instance, in the study of perturbations of black holes in gravity theories beyond General Relativity. As a continuation to this series, we here focus on the quasinormal modes of nonrotating black holes in scalar Gauss-Bonnet gravity assuming a small-coupling expansion. We show that the axial perturbations are purely tensorial and are described by a modifi…
We generalize our previous studies on the Maxwell quasinormal modes around Schwarzschild-anti-de-Sitter black holes with Robin type vanishing energy flux boundary conditions, by adding a global monopole on the background. We first formulate the Maxwell equations both in the Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli and in the Teukolsky formalisms and derive, based on the vanishing energy flux principle, two boundary conditions in each formalism. The Maxwell equations are then solved analytically in pure anti-de Sitter spacetimes with a global monopole, and two different normal modes are obtained due to the existe…
This paper establishes the existence of quasinormal frequencies converging exponentially to the real axis for the Klein--Gordon equation on a Kerr-AdS spacetime when Dirichlet boundary conditions are imposed at the conformal boundary. The proof is adapted from results in Euclidean scattering about the existence of scattering poles generated by time-periodic approximate solutions to the wave equation.
Holography relates the quasinormal modes frequencies of AdS black holes to the pole structure of the dual field theory propagator. These modes thus provide the timescale for the approach to thermal equilibrium in the CFT. Here, we study how such pole structure and, in particular, the time to equilibrium can get modified in the presence of a black hole hair. More precisely, we consider in AdS a set of relaxed boundary conditions that allow for a low decaying graviton mode near the boundary, which triggers an additional degree of freedom. We solve the scalar field response on such background ana…
