As gravitational waves are now being nearly routinely measured with interferometers, the question of using them to probe new physics becomes increasingly legitimate. In this article, we rely on a well established framework to investigate how the complex frequencies of quasinormal modes are affected by different models. The tendencies are explicitly shown, for both the pulsation and the damping rate. The goal is, at this stage, purely qualitative. This opportunity is also taken to derive the Regge-Wheeler equation for general static and spherically symmetric metrics.
We generalize the Chern-Simons modified gravity to the metric-affine case and impose projective invariance by supplementing the Pontryagin density with homothetic curvature terms which do not spoil topologicity. The latter is then broken by promoting the coupling of the Chern-Simons term to a (pseudo)-scalar field. The solutions for torsion and nonmetricity are derived perturbatively, showing that they can be iteratively obtained from the background fields. This allows us to describe the dynamics for the metric and the scalar field perturbations in a self-consistent way, and we apply the forma…
The Quasinormal modes (QNMs) for gravitational and electromagnetic perturbations are calculated in a Scalar-Tensor-Vector (Modified Gravity) spacetime, which was initially proposed to obtain correct dynamics of galaxies and galaxy clusters without the need for dark matter. It is found that for the increasing model parameter $α$, both the real and imaginary parts of the QNMs decrease compared to those for a standard Schwarzschild black hole. On the other hand, when taking into account the $1/(1+α)$ mass re-scaling factor present in MOG, Im($ω$) matches almost identically that of GR, while Re($ω…
Quasinormal modes of perturbed black holes have recently gained much interest because of their tight relations with the gravitational wave signals emitted during the post-merger phase of a binary black hole coalescence. One of the intriguing features of these modes is that they respect the no-hair theorem, and hence, they can be used to test black hole space-times and the underlying gravitational theory. In this paper, we exhibit three different aspects of how black hole quasinormal modes could be altered in theories beyond Einstein general relativity. These aspects are the direct alterations …
In the context of a gravity's rainbow, the asymptotic quasinormal modes of the scalar perturbation in the quantum modified Schwarzschild black holes are investigated. By using the monodromy method, we calculated and obtained the asymptotic quasinormal frequencies, which are dominated not only by the mass parameter of the spacetime, but also by the energy functions from the modified dispersion relations. However, the real parts of the asymptotic quasinormal modes is still $T_H\ln 3$, which is consistent with Hod's conjecture. In addition, for the quantum corrected black hole, the area spacing i…
We reformulate the Chern-Simons modified gravity in the metric-affine formalism, by enlarging the Pontryagin density with homothetic curvature terms which restore projective invariance without spoiling topologicity. The latter is then violated by promoting the coupling of the Chern-Simons term to a (pseudo)-scalar field. We derive the perturbative solutions for torsion and nonmetricity from the background fields, and we describe the dynamics for the resulting linearized metric and the scalar fields in a Schwarzschild black hole background. Then, by adopting numerical techniques we compute the …
The massless scalar wave propagation in the time-dependent BTZ black hole background has been studied. It is shown that in the quasi-normal ringing both the decay and oscillation time-scales are modified in the time-dependent background.
Much of our physical intuition about black hole quasinormal modes in general relativity comes from the eikonal/geometric optics approximation. According to the well-established eikonal model, the fundamental quasinormal mode represents wavepackets orbiting in the vicinity of the black hole's geodesic photon ring, slowly peeling off towards the event horizon and infinity. Besides its strength as a "visualisation" tool, the eikonal approximation also provides a simple quantitative method for calculating the mode frequency, in close agreement with rigorous numerical results. In this paper we move…

Quasinormal mode frequencies and gravitational perturbations of spinning black holes in modified gravity through METRICS: The dynamical Chern-Simons gravity case
In this paper, we investigate the fermions Hawking radiation and quasinormal modes in infra-red modified Ho$\check{r}$ava-Lifshitz gravity under tunneling and perturbation perspectives.Firstly, through the fermions tunneling in IR modified Ho$\check{r}$ava-Lifshitz gravity,we obtain the Hawking radiation emission rate, tunneling temperature and entropy for the Kehagias-Sfetsos black hole. It is found that the results of fermions tunneling are in consistence with the thermodynamics results obtained by calculating surface gravity.Secondly, we numerically calculate the lowing quasinormal modes fr…
Detection of the characteristic spectrum of pulsating neutron stars can be a powerful tool not only to probe the nuclear equation of state, but also to test modifications to general relativity. However, the shift in the oscillation spectrum induced by modified theories of gravity is often small and degenerate with our ignorance of the equation of state. In this Letter, we show that the coupling to additional degrees of freedom present in modified theories of gravity can give rise to new families of modes, with no counterpart in general relativity, which could be sufficiently well resolved in f…
Parikh and Wilczek have shown that Hawking radiation's spectrum cannot be strictly thermal. Such a non-strictly thermal character implies that the spectrum is also not strictly continuous and thus generates a natural correspondence between Hawking radiation and black hole's quasinormal modes. This issue endorses the idea that, in an underlying unitary quantum gravity theory, black holes result highly excited states. We use this key point to re-analyze the spectrum of black hole's quasinormal modes by introducing a black hole's effective temperature. Our analysis changes the physical understand…
We study the scattering of gravitational waves by a Schwarzschild black hole and its perturbed siblings to investigate influences of proposed spectral instability of quasinormal modes on the ringdown signal. Our results indicate that information of dominant ringdown signals, which are ascribed to the fundamental (i.e., least damping) quasinormal mode of unperturbed Schwarzschild black holes, is imprinted in the phase shift defined from the transmission amplitude (1/A_{in} in our notation). This approximately parallels the fact that the resonance of quantum systems is imprinted in the phase shi…
In this paper, we evaluated the quasinormal modes of electromagnetic perturbation in a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by the static spherically symmetric quintessence by using the third-order WKB approximation when the quintessential state parameter $ w_{q}$ in the range of $-1/3<w_{q}<0$. Due to the presence of quintessence, Maxwell field damps more slowly. And when at $-1<w_{q}<-1/3$, it is similar to the black hole solution in the ds/Ads spacetime. The appropriate boundary conditions need to be modified.
Recent studies based on the notion of black hole pseudospectrum indicated substantial instability of the fundamental and high-overtone quasinormal modes. Besides its theoretical novelty, the details about the migration of the quasinormal mode spectrum due to specific perturbations may furnish valuable information on the properties of associated gravitational waves in a more realistic context. This work generalizes the matrix method for black hole quasinormal modes to cope with a specific class of perturbations to the metric featured by discontinuity, which is known to be intimately connected w…
The impact of an antisymmetric tensor on charged black holes: evaporation process, geodesics, deflection angle, scattering effects and quasinormal modes
In the scope of black hole spectroscopy, several attempts have been made in the past decades in order to test black holes or gravitational theories via black hole quasinormal modes. In the eikonal approximation, the quasinormal modes are generically associated with the photon ring of the black hole. This correspondence is valid for most cases in general relativity, but may not be true in other theories of gravity. In this paper, we consider the generalized energy-momentum squared gravity in which matter fields are non-minimally coupled to geometry. We investigate the axial perturbations of the…
We obtain an analytic expression for the highly damped asymptotic quasinormal mode frequencies of the $d\geq 5$-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole modified by the Gauss-Bonnet term, which appears in string derived models of gravity. The analytic expression is obtained under the string inspired assumption that there exists a minimum length scale in the system and in the limit when the coupling in front of the Gauss-Bonnet term in the action is small. Although there are several similarities of this geometry with that of the Schwarzschild black hole, the asymptotic quasinormal mode frequencies …
Under the hypothesis of asymptotic safety of gravity, the static, spherically symmetric black hole solutions in the infrared limit are corrected by non-perturbative effects. Specifically, the metric is modified by the running of gravitational couplings. In this work, we investigate the effects of this correction to the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of a test scalar field propagating in this kind of black hole background analytically and numerically. It is found that although the quasi-period frequencies and the damping of oscillations are respectively enhanced and weakened by the quantum correction…
We study the spectrum of quasinormal mode frequencies for a Proca field on a rotating black hole spacetime. First, we review how the introduction of field mass modifies the spectrum in the scalar-field case, leading to evanescent modes and to quasiresonance. Next, we examine the three physical polarizations of the Proca field and their relation to the electromagnetic field modes in the massless limit. Exploiting a separation of variables, we obtain a five-term recurrence relation from an appropriate ansatz for the radial function. Gaussian elimination and the modified Lentz algorithm are appli…
Linear perturbations of spherically symmetric spacetimes in general relativity are described by radial wave equations, with potentials that depend on the spin of the perturbing field. In previous work we studied the quasinormal mode spectrum of spacetimes for which the radial potentials are slightly modified from their general relativistic form, writing generic small modifications as a power-series expansion in the radial coordinate. We assumed that the perturbations in the quasinormal frequencies are linear in some perturbative parameter, and that there is no coupling between the perturbation…
A scalar field in four-dimensional deSitter spacetime (dS_4) has quasinormal modes which are singular on the past horizon of the south pole and decay exponentially towards the future. These are found to lie in two complex highest-weight representations of the dS_4 isometry group SO(4,1). The Klein-Gordon norm cannot be used for quantization of these modes because it diverges. However a modified `R-norm', which involves reflection across the equator of a spatial S^3 slice, is nonsingular. The quasinormal modes are shown to provide a complete orthogonal basis with respect to the R-norm. Adopting…
The spectrum of frequencies and characteristic times that compose the ringdown phase of gravitational waves emitted by neutron stars carries information about the matter content (the equation of state) and the underlying theory of gravity. Typically, modified theories of gravity introduce additional degrees of freedom/fields, such as scalars, which result in new families of modes composing the ringdown spectrum. Simple but physically promising candidates are scalar-tensor theories, which effectively introduce an additional massive scalar field (i.e. an ultra-light boson) that couples non-minim…
The continued fraction method (also known as Leaver's method) is one of the most effective techniques used to determine the quasinormal modes of a black hole. For extremal black holes, however, the method does not work (since, in such a case, the event horizon is an irregular singular point of the associated wave equation). Fortunately, there exists a modified version of the method, devised by Onozawa et al. [Phys. Rev. D 53, 7033 (1996)], which works for neutral massless fields around an extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. In this paper, we generalize the ideas of Onozawa et al. to charge…
Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory is an interesting and well-motivated theoretical laboratory to explore the impact of new fundamental degrees of freedom in the context of testing the no-hair conjecture, due to the existence of hairy black hole solutions together with the propagation of scalar, vector and tensor modes. In this paper we compute the quasinormal mode spectrum of static and slowly rotating black holes for generic values of the dilaton coupling, within a weak electric charge approximation. Our results suggest that these spacetimes are stable for generic values of the dilaton coupling…
We have obtained the Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) corrected de Sitter and anti-de Sitter black hole solutions in bumblebee gravity with a topological defect. We have calculated the scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational quasinormal modes for the both vanishing and non-vanishing effective cosmological constant using Padé averaged sixth order WKB approximation method. Apart from this, the time evolutions for all three perturbations are studied, and quasinormal modes are calculated using the time domain profile. We found that the first order and second order GUP parameters $α$ and $…
Quasi-normal mode frequencies and gravitational perturbations of black holes with any subextremal spin in modified gravity through METRICS: the scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity case
The ring-down phase of black-hole perturbations is governed by the Quasi-Normal modes (QNM) and offer valuable insight into the nature of the objects emitting them. In General relativity, we identify a dimensionless parameter that can estimate the charge of a black-hole from the energetics of quasi-normal modes. We then extend the analysis for f(R) theories of gravity. Using Isaacson's prescription to modified theories of gravity, we obtain an accurate and robust method to estimate the difference in the radiated energies in the scalar and vector modes due to modifications to general relativity…
Computations of the strong field generation of gravitational waves by black hole processes produce waveforms that are dominated by quasinormal (QN) ringing, a damped oscillation characteristic of the black hole. We describe here the mathematical problem of quantifying the QN content of the waveforms generated. This is done in several steps: (i) We develop the mathematics of QN systems that are complete (in a sense to be defined) and show that there is a quantity, the ``excitation coefficient,'' that appears to have the properties needed to quantify QN content. (ii) We show that incomplete syst…
Asymptotically safe gravity is based on the idea that the main contribution to the Schwarzschild-like black hole spacetime is due to the value of the gravitational coupling which depends on the distance from the origin and approaches its classical value in the far zone. However, at some stage this approach has an arbitrariness of choice of some identification parameter. The two cases of identification are considered here: first, by the modified proper length (the Bonanno-Reuter metric), and second, by the Kretschmann scalar (the metric for this case coincides, up to the redefinition of constan…
