Under the hypothesis of asymptotic safety of gravity, the static, spherically symmetric black hole solutions in the infrared limit are corrected by non-perturbative effects. Specifically, the metric is modified by the running of gravitational couplings. In this work, we investigate the effects of this correction to the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of a test scalar field propagating in this kind of black hole background analytically and numerically. It is found that although the quasi-period frequencies and the damping of oscillations are respectively enhanced and weakened by the quantum correction term, the stability of the black hole remains.
In this work, we present a numerical scheme to study the quasinormal modes of the time-dependent Vaidya black hole metric in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime. The proposed algorithm is primarily based on a generalized matrix method for quasinormal modes. The main feature of the present approach is that the quasinormal frequency, as a function of time, is obtained by a generalized secular equation and therefore a satisfactory degree of precision is achieved. The implications of the results are discussed.
In this article we show that the asymptotic iteration method (AIM) allows one to numerically find the quasinormal modes of Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild de Sitter (SdS) black holes. An added benefit of the method is that it can also be used to calculate the Schwarzschild anti-de Sitter (SAdS) quasinormal modes for the case of spin zero perturbations. We also discuss an improved version of the AIM, more suitable for numerical implementation.
We compute the quasinormal frequencies of $d$-dimensional spherically symmetric black holes with leading string $α'$ corrections for tensorial gravitational perturbations in the highly damped regime. We solve perturbatively the master differential equation and we compute the monodromies of the master perturbation variable (analytically continued to the complex plane) in different contours, in order to obtain the quasinormal mode spectra. We proceed analogously for the quasinormal modes of test scalar fields. Differently than in Einstein gravity, we obtain distinct results for the two cases.
We obtain an analytic expression for the highly damped asymptotic quasinormal mode frequencies of the $d\geq 5$-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole modified by the Gauss-Bonnet term, which appears in string derived models of gravity. The analytic expression is obtained under the string inspired assumption that there exists a minimum length scale in the system and in the limit when the coupling in front of the Gauss-Bonnet term in the action is small. Although there are several similarities of this geometry with that of the Schwarzschild black hole, the asymptotic quasinormal mode frequencies …
We study the Maxwell quasinormal spectrum on asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes with a set of two Robin type boundary conditions, by requiring the energy flux to vanish at asymptotic infinity. Focusing, for illustrative purposes, on Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter black holes both without and with a global monopole, we unveil that, on the one hand, the Maxwell quasinormal spectrum bifurcates as the black hole radius increases for both boundary conditions, which is termed the mode split effect; while on the other hand, with an appropriate fixed black hole radius but increasing the monopole …
The numerical study indicates that there exists a relation between the quasinormal modes and the Davies point for a black hole. In this paper, we analytically study this relation for the charged Reissner-Nordström black holes in asymptotically flat and dS spacetimes. In the eikonal limit, the angular velocity $Ω$ and the Lyapunov exponent $λ$ of the photon sphere, respectively, corresponding to the real and imaginary parts of the quasinormal modes are obtained from the null geodesics. Both in asymptotically flat and dS spacetimes, we observe the spiral-like shapes in the complex quasinormal mo…
We determine the quasinormal frequencies for all gravitational perturbations of the d-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole, in the infinite damping limit. Using the potentials for gravitational perturbations derived recently by Ishibashi and Kodama, we show that in all cases the asymptotic real part of the frequency is proportional to the Hawking temperature with a coefficient of log 3. Via the correspondence principle, this leads directly to an equally spaced entropy spectrum. We comment on the possible implications for the spacing of eigenvalues of the Virasoro generator in the associated ne…
We study the quasinormal modes of fermionic perturbations for an asymptotically Lifshitz black hole in 4-dimensions with dynamical exponent z=2 and plane topology for the transverse section, and we find analytically and numerically the quasinormal modes for massless fermionic fields by using the improved asymptotic iteration method and the Horowitz-Hubeny method. The quasinormal frequencies are purely imaginary and negative, which guarantees the stability of these black holes under massless fermionic field perturbations. Remarkably, both numerical methods yield consistent results; i.e., both m…
We analyze analytically the asymptotic regions of the quasinormal mode frequency spectra with infinitely large overtone numbers for $D$-dimensional Schwarzschild black holes in anti de Sitter spacetimes. In this limit, we confirm the analytic results obtained previously in the literature using different methods. In addition, we show that in certain spacetime dimensions these techniques imply the existence of other regions of the asymptotic quasinormal mode frequency spectrum which have not previously appeared in the literature. For large black holes, some of these modes have a damping rate of …
We consider the asymptotic quasinormal frequencies of various spin fields in Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström black holes. In the Schwarzschild case, the real part of the asymptotic frequency is ln3 for the spin 0 and the spin 2 fields, while for the spin 1/2, the spin 1, and the spin 3/2 fields it is zero. For the non-extreme charged black holes, the spin 3/2 Rarita-Schwinger field has the same asymptotic frequency as that of the integral spin fields. However, the asymptotic frequency of the Dirac field is different, and its real part is zero. For the extremal case, which is relevant to t…
A conjectured connection to quantum gravity has led to a renewed interest in highly damped black hole quasinormal modes (QNMs). In this paper we present simple derivations (based on the WKB approximation) of conditions that determine the asymptotic QNMs for both Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom black holes. This confirms recent results obtained by Motl and Neitzke, but our analysis fills several gaps left by their discussion. We study the Reissner-Nordstrom results in some detail, and show that, in contrast to the asymptotic QNMs of a Schwarzschild black hole, the Reissner-Nordstrom QNMs a…
Perturbations of asymptotically Anti-de-Sitter (AdS) spacetimes are often considered by imposing field vanishing boundary conditions (BCs) at the AdS boundary. Such BCs, of Dirichlet-type, imply a vanishing energy flux at the boundary, but the converse is, generically, not true. Regarding AdS as a gravitational box, we consider vanishing energy flux (VEF) BCs as a more fundamental physical requirement and we show that these BCs can lead to a new branch of modes. As a concrete example, we consider Maxwell perturbations on Kerr-AdS black holes in the Teukolsky formalism, but our formulation appl…
We give a new derivation of the quasinormal frequencies of Schwarzschild black holes in d>=4 and Reissner-Nordstrom black holes in d=4, in the limit of infinite damping. For Schwarzschild in d>=4 we find that the asymptotic real part is T_Hawking.log(3) for scalar perturbations and for some gravitational perturbations; this confirms a result previously obtained by other means in the case d=4. For Reissner-Nordstrom in d=4 we find a specific generally aperiodic behavior for the quasinormal frequencies, both for scalar perturbations and for electromagnetic-gravitational perturbations. The formul…
Motivated by the recent interest in the study of the spacetimes that are asymptotically Lifshitz and in order to extend some previous results, we calculate exactly the quasinormal frequencies of the electromagnetic field in a D-dimensional asymptotically Lifshitz black hole. Based on the values obtained for the quasinormal frequencies we discuss the classical stability of the quasinormal modes. We also study whether the electromagnetic field possesses unstable modes in the D-dimensional Lifshitz spacetime.
The pure quadratic term of New Massive Gravity in three dimensions admits asymptotically locally flat, rotating black holes. These black holes are characterized by their mass and angular momentum, as well as by a hair of gravitational origin. As in the Myers-Perry solution in dimensions greater than five, there is no upper bound on the angular momentum. We show that, remarkably, the equation for a massless scalar field on this background can be solved in an analytic manner and that the quasinormal frequencies can be found in a closed form. The spectrum is obtained requiring ingoing boundary co…
We find the asymptotic formula for quasinormal mode frequencies omega_n of the Dirac equation in a Schwarzschild-AdS_D background in space-time dimension D > 3, in the large black-hole limit appropriate to many applications of the AdS/CFT correspondence. By asymptotic, we mean large overtone number n with everything else held fixed, and we find the O(n^0) correction to the known leading O(n) behavior of omega_n. The result has the schematic form omega_n =~ n Delta(omega) + A ln(n) + B, where Delta(omega) and A are constants and B depends logarithmically on the (D-2)-dimensional spatial momentu…
In this paper, we first investigate the thermal stability of black holes in conformal Weyl gravity with a comparison with the Schwarzschild black holes. Then, we consider a minimally coupled massive scalar perturbation and calculate the quasinormal modes in asymptotically dS spacetime by employing the sixth order WKB approximation and asymptotic iteration method. The deviations from those of the Schwarzschild-dS solutions are obtained and the possibility of the presence of quasi-resonance modes for Weyl black hole solutions is investigated. Finally, we consider a massless scalar perturbation i…
The analytic forms of the asymptotic quasinormal frequencies of a coupled scalar field in the Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger dilaton spacetime is investigated by using the monodromy technique proposed by Motl and Neitzke. It is found that the asymptotic quasinormal frequencies depend not only on the structure parameters of the background spacetime, but also on the coupling between the scalar fields and gravitational field. Moreover, our results show that only in the minimal couple case, i.e., $ξ$ tends zero, the real parts of the asymptotic quasinormal frequencies agrees with the Hod's conjectu…
We study analytically the quasinormal mode spectrum of near-extremal (rotating) Kerr black holes. We find an analytic expression for these black-hole resonances in terms of the black-hole physical parameters: its Bekenstein-Hawking temperature T_{BH} and its horizon's angular velocity Ω, which is valid in the intermediate asymptotic regime 1<<ω<<1/T_{BH}.
We discuss whether the minimally coupled massless Klein-Gordon and Dirac fields have well defined quasinormal modes in single horizon, asymptotically flat two-dimensional black holes. To get the result we solve the equations of motion in the massless limit and we also calculate the effective potentials of Schrodinger type equations. Furthermore we calculate exactly the quasinormal frequencies of the Dirac field propagating in the two-dimensional uncharged Witten black hole. We compare our results on its quasinormal frequencies with other already published.
Contrary to the wide-spread belief, the correspondence principle does not dictate any relation between the asymptotics of quasinormal modes and the spectrum of quantized black holes. Moreover, this belief is in conflict with simple physical arguments.
We calculate exactly the quasinormal frequencies of Klein-Gordon and Dirac test fields propagating in two-dimensional uncharged Achucarro-Ortiz black hole. For both test fields we study whether the quasinormal frequencies are well defined in the massless limit. We use their values to discuss the classical stability of the quasinormal modes in uncharged Achucarro-Ortiz black hole and to check the recently proposed Time Times Temperature bound. Furthermore we extend some of these results to the charged Achucarro-Ortiz black hole.
We study the main properties of general linear perturbations of rotating black holes in asymptotically flat higher-dimensional spacetimes. In particular, we determine the quasinormal mode (QNM) spectrum of singly spinning and equal angular momenta Myers-Perry black holes (MP BHs). Emphasis is also given to the timescale of the ultraspinning and bar-mode instabilities in these two families of MP BHs. For the bar-mode instabilities in the singly spinning MP BH, we find excellent agreement with our linear analysis and the non-linear time evolution of Shibata and Yoshino for d=6,7 spacetime dimens…
We study the evolution of a test scalar field on the background geometry of a regular loop quantum black hole (LQBH) characterized by two loop quantum gravity (LQG) correction parameters, namely, the polymeric function and the minimum area gap. The calculations of quasinormal frequencies in asymptotically flat spacetime are performed with the help of higher-order WKB expansion and related Padé approximants, the improved asymptotic iteration method (AIM), and time-domain integration. The effects of free parameters of the theory on the quasinormal modes are studied and deviations from those of t…
We analytically calculate to second order the correction to the asymptotic form of quasinormal frequencies of four dimensional Schwarzschild black holes based on the monodromy analysis proposed by Motl and Neitzke. Our results are in good agreement with those obtained from numerical calculation.
We use the monodromy method to investigate the asymptotic quasinormal modes of regular black holes based on the explicit Stokes portraits. We find that, for regular black holes with spherical symmetry and a single shape function, the analytical forms of the asymptotic frequency spectrum are not universal and do not depend on the multipole number but on the presence of complex singularities and the trajectory of asymptotic solutions along the Stokes lines.
In the context of a gravity's rainbow, the asymptotic quasinormal modes of the scalar perturbation in the quantum modified Schwarzschild black holes are investigated. By using the monodromy method, we calculated and obtained the asymptotic quasinormal frequencies, which are dominated not only by the mass parameter of the spacetime, but also by the energy functions from the modified dispersion relations. However, the real parts of the asymptotic quasinormal modes is still $T_H\ln 3$, which is consistent with Hod's conjecture. In addition, for the quantum corrected black hole, the area spacing i…
Asymptotically safe gravity is based on the idea that the main contribution to the Schwarzschild-like black hole spacetime is due to the value of the gravitational coupling which depends on the distance from the origin and approaches its classical value in the far zone. However, at some stage this approach has an arbitrariness of choice of some identification parameter. The two cases of identification are considered here: first, by the modified proper length (the Bonanno-Reuter metric), and second, by the Kretschmann scalar (the metric for this case coincides, up to the redefinition of constan…
Investigating the Connection between Generalized Uncertainty Principle and Asymptotically Safe Gravity in Black Hole Signatures through Shadow and Quasinormal Modes
Motivated by novel results in the theory of black-hole quantization, we study {\it analytically} the quasinormal modes (QNM) of ({\it rotating}) Kerr black holes. The black-hole oscillation frequencies tend to the asymptotic value $ω_n=mΩ+i2πT_{BH}n$ in the $n \to \infty$ limit. This simple formula is in agreement with Bohr's correspondence principle. Possible implications of this result to the area spectrum of quantum black holes are discussed.
The well-known duality between quasinormal modes of any stationary, spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat or de Sitter black hole and parameters of the circular null geodesic was initially claimed for gravitational and test field perturbations. According to this duality the real and imaginary parts of the $\ell \gg n$ quasinormal mode (where $\ell$ and $n$ are multipole and overtone numbers respectively) are multiples of the frequency and instability timescale of the circular null geodesics respectively. Later it was shown that the duality is guaranteed only for test fields and may be …
Adopting the monodromy technique devised by Motl and Neitzke, we investigate analytically the asymptotic quasinormal frequencies of a coupled scalar field in the Gibbons-Maeda dilaton spacetime. We find that it is described by $ e^{βω}=-[1+2\cos{(\frac{\sqrt{2ξ+1}}{2} π)}]-e^{-β_I ω}[2+2\cos{(\frac{\sqrt{2ξ+1}}{2}π)}]$, which depends on the structure parameters of the background spacetime and on the coupling between the scalar and gravitational fields. As the parameters $ξ$ and $β_I$ tend to zero, the real parts of the asymptotic quasinormal frequencies becomes $T_H\ln{3}$, which is consistent…
We analytically calculate to leading order the asymptotic form of quasinormal frequencies of Kerr black holes in four, five and seven dimensions. All the relevant quantities can be explicitly expressed in terms of elliptical integrals. In four dimensions, we confirm the results obtained by Keshest and Hod by comparing the analytic results to the numerical ones.
We numerically calculate the quasinormal frequencies of the Klein-Gordon and Dirac fields propagating in a two-dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter black hole of the dilaton gravity theory. For the Klein-Gordon field we use the Horowitz-Hubeny method and the asymptotic iteration method for second order differential equations. For the Dirac field we first exploit the Horowitz-Hubeny method. As a second method, instead of using the asymptotic iteration method for second order differential equations, we propose to take as a basis its formulation for coupled systems of first order differentia…
We analyze the quasinormal modes of $D$-dimensional Schwarzschild black holes with the Gauss-Bonnet correction in the large damping limit and show that standard analytic techniques cannot be applied in a straightforward manner to the case of infinite damping. However, by using a combination of analytic and numeric techniques we are able to calculate the quasinormal mode frequencies in a range where the damping is large but finite. We show that for this damping region the famous $\ln(3)$ appears in the real part of the quasinormal mode frequency. In our calculations, the Gauss-Bonnet coupling, …
We investigate quasinormal mode frequencies $ω_n$ of gravitinos and generic massive spin-3/2 fields in a Schwarzschild-AdS$_D$ background in spacetime dimension $D>3$, in the black brane (large black hole) limit appropriate to many applications of the AdS/CFT correspondence. First, we find asymptotic formulas for $ω_n$ in the limit of large overtone number $n$. Asymptotically, $ω_n \simeq n Δω+ O(\ln n) + O(n^0)$, where $Δω$ is a known constant, and here we compute the $O(\ln n)$ and $O(n^0)$ corrections to the leading $O(n)$ behavior. Then we compare to numerical calculations of exact quasino…
We consider the various perturbations of self-dual warped AdS$_3$ black hole and obtain the exact expressions of quasinormal modes by imposing the vanishing Dirichlet boundary condition at asymptotic infinity. It is expected that the quasinormal modes agree with the poles of retarded Green's functions of the dual CFT. Our results provide a quantitative test of the warped AdS/CFT correspondence.
The exact computation of asymptotic quasinormal frequencies is a technical problem which involves the analytic continuation of a Schrodinger-like equation to the complex plane and then performing a method of monodromy matching at the several poles in the plane. While this method was successfully used in asymptotically flat spacetime, as applied to both the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom solutions, its extension to non-asymptotically flat spacetimes has not been achieved yet. In this work it is shown how to extend the method to this case, with the explicit analysis of Schwarzschild de Sit…
We have studied the scalar perturbation of static charged dilaton black holes in 2+1 dimensions. The black hole considered here is a solution to the low-energy string theory in 2+1 dimensions. It is asymptotic to the anti-de Sitter space. The exact values of quasinormal modes for the scalar perturbations are calculated. For both the charged and uncharged cases, the quasinormal frequencies are pure-imaginary leading to purely damped modes for the perturbations.
We consider the problem of quasinormal modes (QNM) for strongly hyperbolic systems on stationary, asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes, with very general boundary conditions at infinity. We argue that for a time slicing regular at the horizon the QNM should be identified with certain H^k eigenvalues of the infinitesimal generator of the solution semigroup. Using this definition we are able to prove directly that the quasinormal frequencies form a discrete, countable subset of the complex plane, which in the globally stationary case accumulates only at infinity. We avoid any need for merom…
We discuss an approach to obtaining black hole quasinormal modes (QNMs) using the asymptotic iteration method (AIM), initially developed to solve second order ordinary differential equations. We introduce the standard version of this method and present an improvement more suitable for numerical implementation. We demonstrate that the AIM can be used to find radial QNMs for Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordstrom (RN) and Kerr black holes in a unified way. An advantage of the AIM over the standard continued fraction method (CFM) is that for differential equations with more than three regular singular…
We present the improved Mathematica code which computes quasinormal frequencies with the help of the Bernstein spectral method for a general class of black holes, allowing for asymptotically flat, de Sitter or anti-de Sitter asymptotic. The method is especially efficient when searching for purely imaginary and unstable modes and here it is used for detecting the instability region of a charged scalar field in the background of the charged asymptotically de Sitter dilatonic black hole. We show that the instability has superradiant nature and the dilaton field essentially influences the region o…
We study the quasinormal modes of scalar field perturbations in the background of non-Abelian hyperscaling violating Lifshitz black holes. We find that the quasinormal frequencies have no real part so there is no oscillatory behavior in the perturbations, only exponential decay, that is, the system is always overdamped, which guarantees the mode stability of non-Abelian hyperscaling violating Lifshitz black holes. We determine analytically the quasinormal modes for massless scalar fields for a dynamical exponent $z=2$ and hyperscaling violating exponent $\tildeθ>-2$. Also, we obtain numericall…
A recent investigation has led to the possibility of the existence of an interesting region of the asymptotic quasinormal mode spectrum of Schwarzschild-anti de Sitter black holes. In this asymptotic region, the real part of quasinormal mode frequencies approaches infinity while the damping rate approaches a finite value. These quasinormal mode frequencies were calculated using an analytic technique based on the complex coordinate WKB method. In this paper, we use a different analytic technique to calculate such quasinormal mode frequencies. The results of this paper provide further support of…
Four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, at a point on the Coulomb branch where $SU(N)$ gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken to $SU(N-1)\times U(1)$, admits BPS solitons describing a spherical shell of electric and/or magnetic charges enclosing a region of unbroken gauge symmetry. These solitons have been proposed as gauge theory models for certain features of asymptotically flat extremal black holes. In the 't Hooft large $N$ limit with large 't Hooft coupling, these solitons are holographically dual to certain probe D3-branes in the $AdS_5 \times S^5$ solution of …
We find the low lying quasinormal mode frequencies of the recently proposed novel four dimensional Gauss-Bonnet de Sitter black holes for scalar, electromagnetic and Dirac field perturbations using the third order WKB approximation as well as Padé approximation, as an improvement over WKB. We figure out the effect of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling $α$ and the cosmological constant $Λ$ on the real and imaginary parts of the QNM frequencies. We also study the greybody factors and eikonal limits in the above background for all three different types of perturbations.
In Phys. Rev. D 79, 064016 (2009) it was claimed that quasinormal modes which any stationary, spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat black hole emits in the eikonal regime are determined by the parameters of the circular null geodesic: the real and imaginary parts of the quasinormal mode are multiples of the frequency and instability timescale of the circular null geodesics respectively. We shall consider asymptotically flat black hole in the Einstein-Lovelock theory, find analytical expressions for gravitational quasinormal modes in the eikonal regime and analyze the null geodesics. Co…
We explore the relationship between classical quasinormal mode frequencies and black hole quantum mechanics in 2+1 dimensions. Following a suggestion of Hod, we identify the real part of the quasinormal frequencies with the fundamental quanta of black hole mass and angular momentum. We find that this identification leads to the correct quantum behavior of the asymptotic symmetry algebra, and thus of the dual conformal field theory. Finally, we suggest a further connection between quasinormal mode frequencies and the spectrum of a set of nearly degenerate ground states whose multiplicity may be…
