We are interested in extending normal bases of $\mathbf{F}_{\!2^n}/\mathbf{F}_{\!2}$ to bases of $\mathbf{F}_{\!2^{nd}}/\mathbf{F}_{\!2}$ which allow fast arithmetic in $\mathbf{F}_{\!2^{nd}}$. This question has been recently studied by Thomson and Weir in case $d$ is equal to $2$. We construct efficient extended bases in case $d$ is equal to $3$ and $4$. We also give conditions under which Thomson-Weir construction can be combined with ours.
We study the questions of determining the asymptotics of the probabilistic characteristics of additive arithmetic functions in the paper, regardless of whether they have a limit distribution or not. Several assertions are proved about the estimation of the asymptotics of the probabilistic characteristics of strongly additive arithmetic functions, as well as additive functions of the class that have the same asymptotic behavior of the probabilistic characteristics, as for strongly additive arithmetic functions.
The second author has recently introduced a new class of L-series in the arithmetic theory of function fields over finite fields. We show that the value at one of these L-series encode arithmetic informations of certain Drinfeld modules defined over Tate algebras. This enables us to generalize Anderson's log-algebraicity Theorem and Taelman's Herbrand-Ribet Theorem.
Let $K$ be a global field of characteristic $p>0$. We study the cohomology of arithmetic subgroups $Γ$ of $SL_{n+1}(K)$ (with respect to a fixed place of $K$), under the hypothesis that these groups have no $p'$-torsion (any arithmetic group possesses a normal subgroup of finite index without $p'$-torsion). We define the cohomology of $Γ$ with compact supports and values in ${\Bbb Z}[1/p]$, and we relate it to spaces of harmonic cocycles, also with compact supports (§3). We give a description of the locus of these supports, in particular by introducing a notion of cusp in dimension $n\geq 1$ (…
We compute the Euler-Poincaré characteristic of quotients of the Bruhat-Tits building of PGL(n) under the action of arithmetic groups arising from central division algebras over rational function fields of positive characteristic. We use this result to determine the structure of the quotient simplicial complex in certain cases.
We study the homology and the Borel-Moore homology with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}$ of a quotient (called arithmetic quotient) of the Bruhat-Tits building of $\mathrm{PGL}$ of a nonarchimedean local field of positive characteristic by an arithmetic subgroup (a special case of the general definition in Harder's article (Invent.\ Math.\ 42, 135-175 (1977)). We define an analogue of modular symbols in this context and show that the image of the canonical map from homology to Borel-Moore homology is contained in the sub $\mathbb{Q}$-vector space generated by the modular symbols. By definition, th…
A theorem of Tate and Turner says that global function fields have the same zeta function if and only if the Jacobians of the corresponding curves are isogenous. In this note, we investigate what happens if we replace the usual (characteristic zero) zeta function by the positive characteristic zeta function introduced by Goss. We prove that for function fields whose characteristic exceeds their degree, equality of the Goss zeta function is the same as Gassmann-equivalence (a purely group theoretical property), but this statement fails if the degree exceeds the characteristic. We introduce a `T…
We develop a theory of arithmetic characteristic classes of (fully decomposed) automorphic vector bundles equipped with an invariant hermitian metric. These characteristic classes have values in an arithmetic Chow ring constructed by means of differential forms with certain log-log type singularities. We first study the cohomological properties of log-log differential forms, prove a Poincaré lemma for them and construct the corresponding arithmetic Chow groups. Then we introduce the notion of log-singular hermitian vector bundles, which is a variant of the good hermitian vector bundles introdu…
Let $G$ be a multiplicative subgroup of the prime field $\mathbb F_p$ of size $|G|> p^{1-κ}$ and $r$ an arbitrarily fixed positive integer. Assuming $κ=κ(r)>0$ and $p$ large enough, it is shown that any proportional subset $A\subset G$ contains non-trivial arithmetic progressions of length $r$. The main ingredient is the Szemerédi-Green-Tao theorem.
We discuss rather systematically the principle, implicit in earlier works, that for a "random" element in an arithmetic subgroup of a (split, say) reductive algebraic group over a number field, the splitting field of the characteristic polynomial, computed using any faitfhful representation, has Galois group isomorphic to the Weyl group of the underlying algebraic group. Besides tools such as the large sieve, which we had already used, we introduce some probabilistic ideas (large deviation estimates for finite Markov chains) and the general case involves a more precise understanding of the way…
We present normal forms for elliptic curves over a field of characteristic $2$ analogous to Edwards normal form, and determine bases of addition laws, which provide strikingly simple expressions for the group law. We deduce efficient algorithms for point addition and scalar multiplication on these forms. The resulting algorithms apply to any elliptic curve over a field of characteristic $2$ with a $4$-torsion point, via an isomorphism with one of the normal forms. We deduce algorithms for duplication in time $2M + 5S + 2m_c$ and for addition of points in time $7M + 2S$, where $M$ is the cost o…
Motivated by a question of van der Poorten about the existence of infinite chain of prime numbers (with respect to some base), in this paper we advance the study of sequences of consecutive polynomials whose coefficients are chosen consecutively from a sequence in a finite field of odd prime characteristic. We study the arithmetic of such sequences, including bounds for the largest degree of irreducible factors, the number of irreducible factors, as well as for the number of such sequences of fixed length in which all the polynomials are irreducible.
In this paper, we explore the existence of $m$-terms arithmetic progressions in $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ with a given common difference whose terms are all primitive elements, and at least one of them is normal. We obtain asymptotic results for $m \ge 4$ and concrete results for $m \in \{2,3\}$, where the complete list of exceptions when the common difference belongs to $\mathbb{F}_{q}^*$ is obtained. The proofs combine character sums, sieve estimates, and computational arguments using the software SageMath.
We develop a theory of vector-valued heights and intersections defined relative to finitely generated extensions K/k. These generalize both number field and geometric heights. When k is Q or F_p, or when a non-isotriviality condition holds, we obtain Northcott-type results. We then prove a version of the Hodge Index Theorem for vector-valued intersections, and use it to prove a rigidity theorem for polarized dynamical systems over any field.
We develop a computational framework for the statistical characterization of Galois characters with finite image, with application to characterizing Galois groups and establishing equivalence of characters of finite images of $\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$.
Let $d \ge 1$. We study a subspace of the space of automorphic forms of $\mathrm{GL}_d$ over a global field of positive characteristic (or, a function field of a curve over a finite field). We fix a place $\infty$ of $F$, and we consider the subspace $\mathcal{A}_{\mathrm{St}}$ consisting of automorphic forms such that the local component at $\infty$ of the associated automorphic representation is the Steinberg representation (to be made precise in the text). We have two results. One theorem (Theorem 16) describes the constituents of $\mathcal{A}_{\mathrm{St}}$ as automorphic representation an…
The auto-correlations of arithmetic functions, such as the von Mangoldt function, the Möbius function and the divisor function, are the subject of classical problems in analytic number theory. The function field analogues of these problems have recently been resolved in the limit of large finite field size $q$. However, in this limit the correlations disappear: the arithmetic functions become uncorrelated. We compute averages of terms of lower order in $q$ which detect correlations. Our results show that there is considerable cancellation in the averaging and have implications for the rate at …
Recently the second author has associated a finite $\F_q[T]$-module $H$ to the Carlitz module over a finite extension of $\F_q(T)$. This module is an analogue of the ideal class group of a number field. In this paper we study the Galois module structure of this module $H$ for `cyclotomic' extensions of $\F_q(T)$. We obtain function field analogues of some classical results on cyclotomic number fields, such as the $p$-adic class number formula, and a theorem of Mazur and Wiles about the Fitting ideal of ideal class groups. We also relate the Galois module $H$ to Anderson's module of circular un…
We consider a complete discrete valuation field of characteristic p, with possibly non perfect residue field. Let V be a rank one continuous representation with finite local monodromy of its absolute Galois group. We will prove that the Arithmetic Swan conductor of V (defined after Kato in [Kat89] which fits in the more general theory of [AS02] and [AS06]) coincides with the Differential Swan conductor of the associated differential module $D^†(V)$ defined by Kedlaya in [Ked]. This construction is a generalization to the non perfect residue case of the Fontaine's formalism as presented in [Tsu…
The aim of the article is to show that there are many finite extensions of arithmetic groups which are not residually finite. Suppose $G$ is a simple algebraic group over the rational numbers satisfying both strong approximation, and the congruence subgroup problem. We show that every arithmetic subgroup of $G$ has finite extensions which are not residually finite. More precisely, we investigate the group \[ \bar H^2(\mathbb{Z}/n) = direct limit ( H^2(Γ,\mathbb{Z}/n) ), \] where $Γ$ runs through the arithmetic subgroups of $G$. Elements of $\bar H^2(\mathbb{Z}/n)$ correspond to (equivalence cl…
The smallness is proved of fundamental groups for arithmetic schemes. This is a higher dimensional analogue of the Hermite-Minkowski theorem. We also refer to the case of varieties over finite fields. As an application, we prove certain finiteness results of representations of the fundamental groups over algebraically closed fields.
We construct a torsion-free arithmetic lattice in $\mathrm{PGL}_2(\mathbb{F}_2(\!(t)\!))\times\mathrm{PGL}_2(\mathbb{F}_2(\!(t)\!))$ arising from a quaternion algebra over $\mathbb{F}_2(z)$. It is the fundamental group of a square complex with universal covering $T_3\times T_3$, a product of trees with constant valency $3$, which has minimal Euler characteristic. Furthermore, our lattice gives rise to a fake quadric over $\mathbb{F}_2(\!(t)\!)$ by means of non-archimedean uniformization.
Let A be a subset of $\F_p^n$, the $n$-dimensional linear space over the prime field $\F_p$ of size at least $\de N$ $(N=p^n)$, and let $S_v=P^{-1}(v)$ be the level set of a homogeneous polynomial map $P:\F_p^n\to\F_p^R$ of degree $d$, and $v\in\F_p^R$. We show, that under appropriate conditions, the set $A$ contains at least $c\, N|S|$ arithmetic progressions of length $l\leq d$ with common difference in $S_v$, where c is a positive constant depending on $\de$, $l$ and $P$. We also show that the conditions are generic for a class of sparse algebraic sets of density $\approx N^{-\eps}$.
We introduce geometric and homological finiteness properties for countable approximate groups via coarse geometry and then study these finiteness properties for S-arithmetic reductive approximate groups. For S-arithmetic approximate groups without infinite places we show that the finiteness length is finite and compute this finiteness length explicitly. In the simple case it is one less than the sum of the local ranks. This extends the Rank Theorem of Bux, Köhl and the second author from positive characteristic to characteristic zero. Our proof is based on a geometric version of their proof, b…
This paper is the sequel of our paper "Arithmetic height functions over finitely generated fields" (cf. math.NT/9809016). In this paper, we define the canonical height of subvarieties of an abelian variety over a finitely generated field over Q. We also prove that the canonical height of a subvariety is zero if and only if it is a translation of an abelian subvariety by a torsion point.
Let $\ell$ be a prime, $k$ a finitely generated field of characteristic different from $\ell$, and $X$ a smooth geometrically connected curve over $k$. Say a semisimple representation of $π_1^{\mathrm{et}}(X_{\bar k})$ is arithmetic if it extends to a finite index subgroup of $π_1^{\mathrm{et}}(X)$. We show that there exists an effective constant $N=N(X,\ell)$ such that any semisimple arithmetic representation of $π_1^{\mathrm{et}}(X_{\bar k})$ into $\mathrm{GL}_n(\bar{\mathbb{Z}_\ell})$, which is trivial mod $\ell^N$, is in fact trivial. This extends a previous result of the second author fro…
In this paper, we propose a new height function for a variety defined over a finitely generated field over Q. For this height function, we will prove Northcott's theorem and Bogomolov's conjecture, so that we can recover the original Raynaud's theorem (Manin-Mumford's conjecture).
We study equivariant Arakelov-Euler characteristics of hermitian sheaves on arithmetic varieties which support a tame action by a finite group G. The tameness of the group action allows us to produce an equivariant Arakelov-Euler characteristic in a particularly fine "projective" arithmetic class group. We then show that the equivariant Arakelov-Euler characteristics of various complexes of differentials determine the epsilon constants of the L-functions of the motives obtained from the arithmetic variety using symplectic representations of the group G. Our results may be viewed firstly as a h…
Given two sets $\cA, \cB \subseteq \F_q$ of elements of the finite field $\F_q$ of $q$ elements, we show that the productset $$ \cA\cB = \{ab | a \in \cA, b \in\cB\} $$ contains an arithmetic progression of length $k \ge 3$ provided that $k<p$, where $p$ is the characteristic of $\F_q$, and $# \cA # \cB \ge 3q^{2d-2/k}$. We also consider geometric progressions in a shifted productset $\cA\cB +h$, for $f \in \F_q$, and obtain a similar result.
We prove that both classical Chevalley-Warning-Ax and Tsen theorems hold for the blowing up of a quintic 3-fold along a line of multiplicity 3. Both proofs, which are of the same spirit than the original ones, involve the description of this blowing-up as a subvariety of a toric variety.
We discuss the following conjecture of Kitaoka: if a finite subgroup $G$ of $GL_{n}(O_{K})$ is invariant under the action of $Gal(K/\Bbb Q)$ then it is contained in $GL_{n}(K^{ab})$. Here $O_{K}$ is the ring of integers in a finite, Galois extension $K$ of $\Bbb Q$ and $K^{ab}$ is the maximal, abelian subextension of $K$. Our main result reduces this conjecture to a special case of elementary abelian $p-$groups $G$. Also, we construct some new examples which negatively answer a question of Kitaoka.
If K is a number field, arithmetic duality theorems for tori and complexes of tori over K are crucial to understand local-global principles for linear algebraic groups over K. When K is a global field of positive characteristic, we prove similar arithmetic duality theorems, including a Poitou-Tate exact sequence for Galois hypercohomology of complexes of tori. One of the main ingredients is Artin-Mazur-Milne duality theorem for fppf cohomology of finite flat commutative group schemes.
We construct a cohomology theory with compact support H^i_c(X_ar,Z(n))$ for separated schemes of finite type over a finite field, which should play a role analog to Lichtenbaum's Weil-etale cohomology groups for smooth and projective schemes. In particular, if Tate's conjecture holds and rational and numerical equivalence agree up to torsion, then the groups H^i_c(X_ar,Z(n)) are finitely generated, form an integral version of l-adic cohomology with compact support, and admit a formula for the special values of the zeta-function of X.
We construct examples of projective toric surfaces whose blow-up at a general point has a non-polyhedral pseudo-effective cone, both in characteristic $0$ and in every prime characteristic $p$. As a consequence, we prove that the pseudo-effective cone of the Grothendieck-Knudsen moduli space $\overline M_{0,n}$ of stable rational curves is not polyhedral for $n\geq 10$ in characteristic $0$ and in characteristic $p$, for all primes $p$. Many of these toric surfaces are related to a very interesting class of arithmetic threefolds that we call arithmetic elliptic pairs of infinite order. Their a…
Let K be an algebraically closed field of prime characteristic p, let N be a positive integer, let f be a self-map on the algebraic torus T=G_m^N defined over K, let V be a curve in T defined over K, and let x be a K-point of T. We show that the set S consisting of all positive integers n for which f^n(x) is contained in V is a union of finitely many arithmetic progressions, along with a finite set and with finitely many p-arithmetic sequences, which are sets of the form {b + ap^{kn}: n is a positive integer} where a and b are given rational numbers and k is a positive integer. We also prove t…
Let Z{t} be the ring of arithmetic power series that converge on the complex open unit disc. A classical result of Harbater asserts that every finite group occurs as a Galois group over the quotient field of Z{t}. We strengthen this by showing that every finite split embedding problem over Q acquires a solution over this field. More generally, we solve all t-unramified finite split embedding problems over the quotient field of O{t}, where O is the ring of integers of an arbitrary number field K.
We study arithmetic of the algebraic varieties defined over number fields by applying Lagrange interpolation to fibrations. Assuming the finiteness of the Tate-Shafarevich group of a certain elliptic curve, we show, for Châtelet surface bundles over curves, that the violation of Hasse principle being accounted for by the Brauer-Manin obstruction is not invariant under an arbitrary finite extension of the ground field.
Let $K$ be a field whose absolute Galois group is finitely generated. If $K$ neither finite nor of characteristic 2, then every hyperelliptic curve over $K$ with all of its Weierstrass points defined over $K$ has infinitely many $K$-points. If, in addition, $K$ is not locally finite, then every elliptic curve over $K$ with all of its 2-torsion rational has infinite rank over $K$. These and similar results are deduced from the Hales-Jewett theorem.
We study the arithmetic of seminormal $v$-noetherian weakly Krull monoids with nontrivial conductor which have finite class group and prime divisors in all classes. These monoids include seminormal orders in holomorphy rings in global fields. The crucial property of seminormality allows us to give precise arithmetical results analogous to the well-known results for Krull monoids having finite class group and prime divisors in each class. This allows us to show, for example, that unions of sets of lengths are intervals and to provide a characterization of half-factoriality.
Suppose L is any finite algebraic extension of either the ordinary rational numbers or the p-adic rational numbers. Also let g_1,...,g_k be polynomials in n variables, with coefficients in L, such that the total number of monomial terms appearing in at least one g_i is exactly m. We prove that the maximum number of isolated roots of G:=(g_1,...,g_k) in L^n is finite and depends solely on (m,n,L), i.e., is independent of the degrees of the g_i. We thus obtain an arithmetic analogue of Khovanski's Theorem on Fewnomials, extending earlier work of Denef, Van den Dries, Lipshitz, and Lenstra.
Let $X$ be a smooth curve over a finitely generated field $k$, and let $\ell$ be a prime different from the characteristic of $k$. We analyze the dynamics of the Galois action on the deformation rings of mod $\ell$ representations of the geometric fundamental group of $X$. Using this analysis, we prove analogues of the Shafarevich and Fontaine-Mazur finiteness conjectures for function fields over algebraically closed fields in arbitrary characteristic, and a weak variant of the Frey-Mazur conjecture for function fields in characteristic zero. For example, we show that if $X$ is a normal, conne…
The wild group is the group of wild automorphisms of a local field of characteristic p. In this paper we apply Fontaine-Wintenberger's theory of fields of norms to study the structure of the wild group. In particular we provide a new short proof of R. Camina's theorem which says that every pro-p-group with countably many open sugroups is isomorphic to a closed subgroup of the wild group. We study some closed subgroups T of the wild group whose commutator subgroup is unusually small. Realizing the group T as the Galois group of arithmetically profinite extensions of p-adic fields we answer affi…
We present basic constructions and properties in arithmetic Chern-Simons theory with finite gauge group along the line of topological quantum field theory. For a finite set $S$ of finite primes of a number field $k$, we construct arithmetic analogues of the Chern-Simons 1-cocycle, the prequantization bundle for a surface and the Chern-Simons functional for a $3$-manifold. We then construct arithmetic analogues for $k$ and $S$ of the quantum Hilbert space (space of conformal blocks) and the Dijkgraaf-Witten partition function in (2+1)-dimensional Chern-Simons TQFT. We show some basic and functo…
This paper surveys and develops links between polynomial invariants of finite groups, factorization theory of Krull domains, and product-one sequences over finite groups. The goal is to gain a better understanding of the multiplicative ideal theory of invariant rings, and connections between the Noether number and the Davenport constants of finite groups.
We relate the singularities of a scheme $X$ to the asymptotics of the number of points of $X$ over finite rings. This gives a partial answer to a question of Mustata. We use this result to count representations of arithmetic lattices. More precisely, if $Γ$ is an arithmetic lattice whose $\mathbb{Q}$-rank is greater than one, let $r_n(Γ)$ be the number of irreducible $n$-dimensional representations of $Γ$ up to isomorphism. We prove that there is a constant $C$ (for example, $C=746$ suffices) such that $r_n(Γ)=O(n^C)$ for every such $Γ$. This answers a question of Larsen and Lubotzky.
In contrast to the fact that there are only finitely many maximal arithmetic reflection groups acting on the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^n$, $n\geq 2$, we show that: (a) one can produce infinitely many maximal quasi-arithmetic reflection groups acting on $\mathbb{H}^2$; (b) they admit infinitely many different fields of definition; (c) the degrees of their fields of definition are unbounded. However, for $n\geq 14$ an approach initially developed by Vinberg shows that there are still finitely many fields of definitions in the quasi-arithmetic case.
