Let $K$ be a global field of characteristic $p>0$. We study the cohomology of arithmetic subgroups $Γ$ of $SL_{n+1}(K)$ (with respect to a fixed place of $K$), under the hypothesis that these groups have no $p'$-torsion (any arithmetic group possesses a normal subgroup of finite index without $p'$-torsion). We define the cohomology of $Γ$ with compact supports and values in ${\Bbb Z}[1/p]$, and we relate it to spaces of harmonic cocycles, also with compact supports (§3). We give a description of the locus of these supports, in particular by introducing a notion of cusp in dimension $n\geq 1$ (§4) and we calculate "geometrically" the Euler-Poincaré characteristic of this cohomology, up to torsion (§5).
The theory of differential equations has an arithmetic analogue in which derivatives are replaced by Fermat quotients. One can then ask what is the arithmetic analogue of a linear differential equation. The study of usual linear differential equations is the same as the study of the differential cocycle from $GL_n$ into its Lie algebra given by the logarithmic derivative. However we prove here that there are no such cocycles in the context of arithmetic differential equations. In sequels of this paper we will remedy the situation by introducing arithmetic analogues of Lie algebras and a skew v…
Motivated by the search of a concept of linearity in the theory of arithmetic differential equations we introduce here an arithmetic analogue of Lie algebras and a concept of skew arithmetic differential cocycles. We will then construct such skew cocycles, based on certain remarkable lifts of Frobenius for the classical groups $GL_n, SL_n, SO_n, Sp_{n}$. The theory for $GL_n$, especially on the Galois side, will be further developed in a sequel to this paper.
In this paper we consider certain families of arithmetic subgroups of SO^0(p,q) and SL_3(R), respectively. We study the cohomology of such arithmetic groups with coefficients in arithmetically defined modules. We show that for natural sequences of such modules the torsion in the cohomology grows exponentially.
Higher order cohomology of arithmetic groups is expressed in terms of (g,K)-cohomology. Generalizing results of Borel, it is shown that the latter can be computed using functions of (uniform) moderate growth. A higher order versions of Borel's conjecture is stated, asserting that the cohomology can be computed using automorphic forms.
The cuspidal cohomology groups of arithmetic groups in certain infinite dimensional Modules are computed. As a result we get a simultaneous generalization of the Patterson-Conjecture and the Lewis-Correspondence.
The Eichler-Shimura isomorphism realizes the automorphic representation generated by an automorphic newform in certain cohomology of an arithmetic group. In this short note, we give a cohomological interpretation of the Eichler-Shimura isomorphism as a connection morphism of certain exact sequence of G-modules, for the multiplicative group G of any quaternion algebra over a totally real field.
We study the $Λ$-module structure of the ordinary parts of the arithmetic cohomology groups of modular Jacobians made out of various towers of modular curves. We prove that the ordinary parts of $Λ$-adic Selmer groups coming from two different towers have "almost same" $Λ$-module structures. We also prove the cotorsionness of $Λ$-adic Tate-Shafarevich group under mild assumptions.
We describe a graded extension of the usual Hecke algebra: it acts in a graded fashion on the cohomology of an arithmetic group $Γ$. Under favorable conditions, the cohomology is freely generated in a single degree over this graded Hecke algebra. From this construction we extract an action of certain $p$-adic Galois cohomology groups on $H^*(Γ, \mathbb{Q}_p)$, and formulate the central conjecture: the motivic $\mathbb{Q}$-lattice inside these Galois cohomology groups preserves $H^*(Γ,\mathbb{Q})$.
We study the derived Hecke action at $p$ on the ordinary $p$-adic cohomology of arithmetic subgroups of semisimple groups $\mathrm G(\mathbb Q)$, i.e., we study the derived version of Hida's theory for ordinary Hecke algebras. This is the analog at $\ell=p$ of derived Hecke actions studied by Venkatesh in the tame case. We show that properties of the derived Hecke action at $p$ are related to deep conjectures in Galois cohomology which are higher analogs of the classical Leopoldt conjecture.
M. Goresky, G. Harder, and R. MacPherson defined weighted cohomologies of arithmetic groups Γin a real group G, with coefficients in certain local systems, associated to arbitrary upper and lower weight profiles. The author shows, using essentially local arguments on the reductive Borel-Serre compactification, that these cohomologies agree with certain weighted L^2 cohomologies defined by J. Franke. When the rank of G is equal to that of a maximal compact subgroup, this implies that the cohomologies associated to both upper and lower middle profiles are both isomorphic to L^2 cohomology.
In this paper we extend a conjecture of Ash and Sinnott relating niveau one Galois representation to the mod p cohomology of congruence subgroups of SL(n,Z) to include Galois representations of higher niveau. We then present computational evidence for our conjecture in the case n=3 in the form of three-dimensional Galois representations which appear to correspond to cohomology eigenclasses as predicted by the conjecture. Our examples include Galois representations with nontrivial weight and level, as well as irreducible three-dimensional representations which are in no obvious way related to l…
This is the second paper in a series devoted to developing an arithmetic PDE analogue of Riemannian geometry. In Part 1 arithmetic PDE analogues of Levi-Civita and Chern connections were introduced and studied. In this paper arithmetic analogues of curvature and characteristic classes are developed.
In this paper, we give an approach to the zeta values of a (proper regular) arithmetic scheme X at the integers r>=d:=dim(X), using étale cohomology of X with Q_p(r) and Z_p(r)-coefficients.
We correct a mistake in the paper "On the cuspidal cohomology of $S$-arithmetic subgroups of reductive groups over number fields " by A. Borel, J.-P. Labesse, J. Schwermer that appeared in Compositio Mathematica, 102 (1996), 1-40.
We present a strategy to use the stable trace formula to compute growth in the cohomology of cocompact arithmetic lattices in a reductive group $G$. We then implement it in the case where $G = U(2,1)$, using results of Rogwaski. This recovers a result of Marshall.
In this paper we consider the cohomology of a closed arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifold with coefficients in the local system defined by the even symmetric powers of the standard representation of SL(2,C). The cohomology is defined over the integers and is a finite abelian group. We show that the order of the 2nd cohomology grows exponentially as the local system grows. We also consider the twisted Ruelle zeta function of a closed arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifold and we express the leading coefficient of its Laurent expansion at the origin in terms of the orders of the torsion subgroups of the c…
In 1985 Kazuya Kato formulated a fascinating framework of conjectures which generalizes the Hasse principle for the Brauer group of a global field to the so-called cohomological Hasse principle for an arithmetic scheme. In this paper we prove the prime-to-characteristic part of the cohomological Hasse principle. We also explain its implications on finiteness of motivic cohomology and special values of zeta functions.
In this note, we remark on the range in Borel's theorem on the stable cohomology of the arithmetic groups Sp(2n,Z) and SO(n,n;Z). This improves the range stated in Borel's original papers, an improvement that was known to Borel. Our main task is a technical computation involving the Weyl group action on roots and weights. This note originally appeared as the appendix to arXiv:1711.03139.
We prove the finiteness and compatibility with base change of the (phi,Gamma)-cohomology and the Iwasawa cohomology of arithmetic families of (phi,Gamma)-modules. Using this finiteness theorem, we show that a family of Galois representations that is densely pointwise refined in the sense of Mazur is actually trianguline as a family over a large subspace. In the case of the Coleman-Mazur eigencurve, we determine the behavior at all points.
For d=2n+1 a positive odd integer, we consider sequences of arithmetic subgroups of SO_0(d,1) and Spin(d,1) yielding corresponding hyperbolic manifolds of finite volume and show that, under appropriate and natural assumptions, the torsion of the associated cohomology groups grows exponentially.
We construct a cohomology theory with compact support H^i_c(X_ar,Z(n))$ for separated schemes of finite type over a finite field, which should play a role analog to Lichtenbaum's Weil-etale cohomology groups for smooth and projective schemes. In particular, if Tate's conjecture holds and rational and numerical equivalence agree up to torsion, then the groups H^i_c(X_ar,Z(n)) are finitely generated, form an integral version of l-adic cohomology with compact support, and admit a formula for the special values of the zeta-function of X.
A. Sikora has shown results which confirm the analogy between number fields and 3-manifolds. However, he has given proofs of his results which are very different in the arithmetic and in the topological case. In this paper, we show how to provide a unified approach to the results in the two cases. For this we introduce an equivariant cohomology which satisfies a localization theorem. In particular, we obtain a satisfactory explanation for the coincidences between Sikora's formulas which leads us to clarify and to extend the dictionary of arithmetic topology.
