We construct a cohomology theory with compact support H^i_c(X_ar,Z(n))$ for separated schemes of finite type over a finite field, which should play a role analog to Lichtenbaum's Weil-etale cohomology groups for smooth and projective schemes. In particular, if Tate's conjecture holds and rational and numerical equivalence agree up to torsion, then the groups H^i_c(X_ar,Z(n)) are finitely generated, form an integral version of l-adic cohomology with compact support, and admit a formula for the special values of the zeta-function of X.
In this paper, we partially extend recent results of Wan concerning the relationship between the zeta functions of a Calabi-Yau hypersurface and its (singular) mirror variety.
We survey some recent applications of p-adic cohomology to machine computation of zeta functions of algebraic varieties over finite fields of small characteristic, and suggest some new avenues for further exploration.
We show that the recent conjecture of the first-named author for the special value at $s=1$ of the zeta function of an arithmetic surface is equivalent to the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for the Jacobian of the generic fibre.
The p-cohomology of an algebraic variety in characteristic p lies naturally in the category $D_{c}^{b}(R)$ of coherent complexes of graded modules over the Raynaud ring (Ekedahl-Illusie-Raynaud). We study homological algebra in this category. When the base field is finite, our results provide relations between the the absolute cohomology groups of algebraic varieties, log varieties, algebraic stacks, etc. and the special values of their zeta functions. These results provide compelling evidence that $D_{c}^{b}(R)$ is the correct target for p-cohomology in characteristic p.
We study the twisted local zeta function associated to a polynomial in two variables with coefficients in a non-Archimedean local field of arbitrary characteristic. Under the hypothesis that the polynomial is arithmetically non degenerate, we obtain an explicit list of candidates for the poles in terms of geometric data obtained from a family of arithmetic Newton polygons attached to the polynomial. The notion of arithmetical non degeneracy due to Saia and Zúñiga-Galindo is weaker than the usual notion of non degeneracy due to Kouchnirenko. As an application we obtain asymptotic expansions for…
In this paper, we study the relation between the zeta function of a Calabi-Yau hypersurface and the zeta function of its mirror. Two types of arithmetic relations are discovered. This motivates us to formulate two general arithmetic mirror conjectures for the zeta functions of a mirror pair of Calabi-Yau manifolds.
In this paper, we study the arithmetic zeta function $$\mathscr{Z}_{\mathcal{X}}(s) = \prod_p \prod_{\substack{x \in \mathcal{X}_p \\ \text{closed}}} \Big( \frac{1}{1-|κ(x)|^{-s}} \Big)^{\mathfrak{m}_{p}(x)}$$ associated to a scheme $\mathcal{X}$ of finite type over $\mathbb{Z}$, where $κ(x)$ denotes the residue field and $\mathfrak{m}_{p}(x)$ the multiplicity of $x$ in $\mathcal{X}_p$. If $\mathcal{X}$ is defined over a finite field, then $\mathscr{Z}_{\mathcal{X}}$ appears naturally in the context of point counting with multiplicities. We prove that $\mathscr{Z}_{\mathcal{X}}$ admits a merom…
We give a conjectural description of the vanishing order and leading Taylor coefficient of the Zeta function of a proper, regular arithmetic scheme $\mathcal{X}$ at any integer $n$ in terms of Weil-étale cohomology complexes. This extends work of Lichtenbaum \cite{Lichtenbaum05} and Geisser \cite{Geisser04b} for $\mathcal{X}$ of characteristic $p$, of Lichtenbaum \cite{li04} for $\mathcal{X}=\mathrm{Spec}(\mathcal{O}_F)$ and $n=0$ where $F$ is a number field, and of the second author for arbitrary $\mathcal{X}$ and $n=0$ \cite{Morin14}. We show that our conjecture is compatible with the Tamaga…
We obtain an asymptotic formula for the second discrete moment of the Riemann zeta function over the arithmetic progression $\frac{1}{2} + in$. It shows that the first main term is equal to that of the continuous mean value.
Lichtenbaum conjectured the existence of a Weil-étale cohomology in order to describe the vanishing order and the special value of the Zeta function of an arithmetic scheme $\mathcal{X}$ at $s=0$ in terms of Euler-Poincaré characteristics. Assuming the (conjectured) finite generation of some étale motivic cohomology groups we construct such a cohomology theory for regular schemes proper over $\mathrm{Spec}(\mathbb{Z})$. In particular, we obtain (unconditionally) the right Weil-étale cohomology for geometrically cellular schemes over number rings. We state a conjecture expressing the vanishing …
We consider the values at proper fractions of the arithmetic gamma function and the values at positive integers of the zeta function for F_q[theta] and provide complete algebraic independence results for them.
We compute a basis for the p-adic Dwork cohomology of a smooth complete intersection in projective space over a finite field and use it to give p-adic estimates for the action of Frobenius on this cohomology. In particular, we prove that the Newton polygon of the characteristic polynomial of Frobenius lies on or above the associated Hodge polygon. This result was first proved by B. Mazur using crystalline cohomology.
We give an interim report on some improvements and generalizations of the Abbott-Kedlaya-Roe method to compute the zeta function of a nondegenerate ample hypersurface in a projectively normal toric variety over $\mathbb{F}_p$ in linear time in $p$. These are illustrated with a number of examples including K3 surfaces, Calabi-Yau threefolds, and a cubic fourfold. The latter example is a non-special cubic fourfold appearing in the Ranestad-Voisin coplanar divisor on moduli space; this verifies that the coplanar divisor is not a Noether-Lefschetz divisor in the sense of Hassett.
The aim of this article is to illustrate, on the example of Dwork hypersurfaces, how the study of the representation of a finite group of automorphisms of a hypersurface in its etale cohomology allows to factor its zeta function.
We use a form of lifted harmonic analysis to develop a two-dimensional adelic integral representation of the zeta functions of simple arithmetic surfaces. Manipulations of this integral then lead to an adelic interpretation of the so-called mean-periodicity correspondence, which is comparable to the better known automorphicity conjectures for the generic fibre.
We present new algorithms for computing zeta functions of algebraic varieties over finite fields. In particular, let X be an arithmetic scheme (scheme of finite type over Z), and for a prime p let zeta_{X_p}(s) be the local factor of its zeta function. We present an algorithm that computes zeta_{X_p}(s) for a single prime p in time p^(1/2+o(1)), and another algorithm that computes zeta_{X_p}(s) for all primes p < N in time N (log N)^(3+o(1)). These generalise previous results of the author from hyperelliptic curves to completely arbitrary varieties.
In this work, we study the arithmetic nature of the numbers of the form $n^{\g}$, for $n \in \N$ and $\g\in \C$. We also consider a related conjecture and we show that it is a consequence of the unipresent Schanuel's conjecture.
Hasse-Weil zeta functions of SL_2-character varieties of arithmetic two bridge link groups are determined. Special values of the zeta functions at s=0,1,2 are also investigated.
In this paper, we give an approach to the zeta values of a (proper regular) arithmetic scheme X at the integers r>=d:=dim(X), using étale cohomology of X with Q_p(r) and Z_p(r)-coefficients.
We study the special value conjecture for the Zeta function of a proper regular arithmetic scheme X introduced by Flach and Morin in the case n=1. We compute the correction factor C(X,1) left unspecified in the original statement of the Flach-Morin Conjecture, thereby developing some results on the eh-topology introduced by Geisser. We then specialize further to the case where X is an arithmetic surface and show that the conjecture of Flach and Morin is equivalent to the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture.
In 1985 Kazuya Kato formulated a fascinating framework of conjectures which generalizes the Hasse principle for the Brauer group of a global field to the so-called cohomological Hasse principle for an arithmetic scheme. In this paper we prove the prime-to-characteristic part of the cohomological Hasse principle. We also explain its implications on finiteness of motivic cohomology and special values of zeta functions.
We prove the finiteness and compatibility with base change of the (phi,Gamma)-cohomology and the Iwasawa cohomology of arithmetic families of (phi,Gamma)-modules. Using this finiteness theorem, we show that a family of Galois representations that is densely pointwise refined in the sense of Mazur is actually trianguline as a family over a large subspace. In the case of the Coleman-Mazur eigencurve, we determine the behavior at all points.
In this paper, we give concrete descriptions of leafwise cohomology groups and show the regularized determinant expression of the dynamical zeta function for fiber bundles over $S^{1}$. As applications, we show a functional equation and some formulas for special values of the dynamical zeta function.
The integral $t$-motivic cohomology and the class module of a (rigid analytically trivial) Anderson $t$-motive were introduced by the first author in [Gaz22b]. This paper is devoted to their determination in the particular case of tensor powers of the Carlitz $t$-motive, namely, the function field counterpart $\underline{A}(n)$ of Tate twists $\mathbb{Z}(n)$. We find out that these modules are in relation with fundamental objects of function field arithmetic: integral $t$-motivic cohomology governs linear relations among Carlitz polylogarithms, its torsion is expressed in terms of the denomina…
A theorem of Tate and Turner says that global function fields have the same zeta function if and only if the Jacobians of the corresponding curves are isogenous. In this note, we investigate what happens if we replace the usual (characteristic zero) zeta function by the positive characteristic zeta function introduced by Goss. We prove that for function fields whose characteristic exceeds their degree, equality of the Goss zeta function is the same as Gassmann-equivalence (a purely group theoretical property), but this statement fails if the degree exceeds the characteristic. We introduce a `T…
We consider zeta functions: $Z(f ;P ;s)=\sum_{\m \in \N^{n}} f(m_1,..., m_n) P(m_1,..., m_n)^{-s/d}$ where $P \in \R [X_1,..., X_n]$ has degree $d$ and $f$ is a function arithmetic in origin, e.g. a multiplicative function. In this paper, I study the meromorphic continuation of such series beyond an a priori domain of absolute convergence when $f$ and $P$ satisfy properties one typically meets in applications. As a result, I prove an explicit asymptotic for a general class of lattice point problems subject to arithmetic constraints.
We investigate the properties of the zeta-function of well-rounded sublattices of a fixed arithmetic lattice in the plane. In particular, we show that this function has abscissa of convergence at $s=1$ with a real pole of order 2, improving upon a recent result of S. Kuehnlein. We use this result to show that the number of well-rounded sublattices of a planar arithmetic lattice of index less or equal $N$ is $O(N \log N)$ as $N \to \infty$. To obtain these results, we produce a description of integral well-rounded sublattices of a fixed planar integral well-rounded lattice and investigate conve…
In Sarnak's paper, it was proved that the Selberg zeta function for SL(2,Z) is expressed in terms of the fundamental units and the class numbers of the primitive indefinite binary quadratic forms. The aim of this paper is to obtain similar arithmetic expressions of the logarithmic derivatives of the Selberg zeta functions for congruence subgroups of SL(2,Z). As applications, we study the Brun-Titchmarsh type prime geodesic theorem, the asymptotic behavior of the sum of the class number.
This paper is dedicated to the description of the poles of the Igusa local zeta functions $Z(s,f,v)$ when $f(x,y)$ satisfies a new non degeneracy condition, that we have called arithmetic non degeneracy. More precisely, we attach to each polynomial $f(x,y)$, a collection of convex sets $Γ^{A}$ called the arithmetic Newton polygon of $f(x,y)$, and introduce the notion of arithmetic non degeneracy with respect to $Γ^{A}(f)$. The set of degenerate polynomials, with respect to a fixed geometric Newton polygon, contains an open subset, for the Zariski topology, formed by non degenerate polynomials …
In this paper we investigate the arithmetic aspects of the theory of $\mathcal{E}_K^\dagger$-valued rigid cohomology introduced and studied in [11,12]. In particular we show that these cohomology groups have compatible connections and Frobenius structures, and therefore are naturally $(φ,\nabla)$-modules over $\mathcal{E}_K^\dagger$ whenever they are finite dimensional. We also introduce a category of `absolute' coefficients for the theory; the same results are true for cohomology groups with coefficients. We moreover prove a $p$-adic version of the weight monodromy conjecture for smooth (not …
In this paper we consider certain families of arithmetic subgroups of SO^0(p,q) and SL_3(R), respectively. We study the cohomology of such arithmetic groups with coefficients in arithmetically defined modules. We show that for natural sequences of such modules the torsion in the cohomology grows exponentially.
We show that the twisted second moments of the Riemann zeta function averaged over the arithmetic progression $1/2 + i(an + b)$ with $a > 0$, $b$ real, exhibits a remarkable correspondance with the analogous continuous average and derive several consequences. For example, motivated by the linear independence conjecture, we show at least one third of the elements in the arithmetic progression $a n + b$ are not the ordinates of some zero of $ζ(s)$ lying on the critical line. This improves on earlier work of Martin and Ng. We then complement this result by producing large and small values of $ζ(s…
A general hypergeometric construction of linear forms in (odd) zeta values is presented. The construction allows to recover the records of Rhin and Viola for the irrationality measures of $ζ(2)$ and $ζ(3)$, as well as to explain Rivoal's "infinitely-many" result (math.NT/0008051) and to prove that at least one of the four numbers $ζ(5)$, $ζ(7)$, $ζ(9)$, and $ζ(11)$ is irrational.
We study toric varieties over a field k that split in a Galois extension K/k using Galois cohomology with coefficients in the toric automorphism group. Part of this Galois cohomology fits into an exact sequence induced by the presentation of the class group of the toric variety. This perspective helps to compute the Galois cohomology, particularly for cyclic Galois groups. We use Galois cohomology to classify k-forms of projective spaces when K/k is cyclic, and we also study k-forms of surfaces.
Higher order cohomology of arithmetic groups is expressed in terms of (g,K)-cohomology. Generalizing results of Borel, it is shown that the latter can be computed using functions of (uniform) moderate growth. A higher order versions of Borel's conjecture is stated, asserting that the cohomology can be computed using automorphic forms.
We prove a large sieve statement for the average distribution of Frobenius conjugacy classes in arithmetic monodromy groups over finite fields. As a first application we prove a stronger version of a result of Chavdarov on the ``generic'' irreducibility of the numerator of the zeta functions in a family of curves with large monodromy.
In this paper, we define new fractal dimensions of a metric space in order to calculate the roughness of a set on a large scale. These fractal dimensions are called upper zeta dimension and lower zeta dimension. The upper zeta dimension is an extension of the zeta dimension introduced by Doty, Gu, Lutz, Elvira, Mayordomo, and Moser. We show that the upper zeta dimension is always a lower bound for the Assouad dimension. Moreover, we apply the upper zeta dimension to the existence of weak arithmetic patches of a given set. Arithmetic patches are higher dimensionalized arithmetic progressions. A…
In recent work with Bhatt and Morrow, we defined a new integral p-adic cohomology theory interpolating between etale and de Rham cohomology. An unexpected feature of this cohomology is that in coordinates, it can be computed by a q-deformation of the de Rham complex, which is thus canonical, at least in the derived category. In this short survey, we try to explain what we know about this phenomenon, and what can be conjectured to hold.
The cuspidal cohomology groups of arithmetic groups in certain infinite dimensional Modules are computed. As a result we get a simultaneous generalization of the Patterson-Conjecture and the Lewis-Correspondence.
We give a new type of mixed discrete joint universality properties, which is satisfied by a wide class of zeta-functions. We study the universality for a certain modification of a Matsumoto zeta-function and a periodic Hurwitz zeta-function under certain arithmetic condition on the common difference of arithmetical progression and the shifting parameter. Also we generalize a known discrete universality result in our former paper and the new one as well.
We give a natural construction of unramified over Z framed mixed Tate motives, whose periods are the multiple zeta values. Namely, for each convergent multiple zeta-value we define two boundary divisors A and B in the moduli space M_{0,n+3} of stable curves of genus zero. The corresponding multiple zeta-motive is the n-th cohomology of the pair (M_{0,n+3} -A,B).
Using work of Antieau and Bhatt-Morrow-Scholze, we define a filtration on topological Hochschild homology and its variants $TP$ and $TC^-$ of quasi-lci rings with bounded torsion, which recovers the BMS-filtration after $p$-adic completion. Then we compute the graded pieces of this filtration in terms of Hodge completed derived de Rham cohomology relative to the base ring $\mathbb{Z}$. We denote the cofiber of the canonical map from $\mathrm{gr}^{n}TC^-(-)$ to $\mathrm{gr}^{n}TP(-)$ by $LΩ^{<n}_{-/\mathbb{S}}[2n]$. Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a regular connected scheme of dimension $d$ proper over $\…
The concept of weights on the cohomology of algebraic varieties was initiated by fundamental ideas and work of A. Grothendieck and P. Deligne. It is deeply connected with the concept of motives and appeared first on the singular cohomology as the weights of (possibly mixed) Hodge structures and on the etale cohomology as the weights of eigenvalues of Frobenius. But weights also appear on algebraic fundamental groups and in p-adic Hodge theory, where they become only visible after applying the comparison functors of Fontaine. After rehearsing various versions of weights, we explain some more re…
We study the behaviour near s=1/2 of zeta functions of varieties over finite fields F_q with q a square. The main result is an Euler-characteristic formula for the square of the special value at s=1/2. The Euler-characteristic is constructed from the Weil-etale cohomology of a certain supersingular elliptic curve.
The Eichler-Shimura isomorphism realizes the automorphic representation generated by an automorphic newform in certain cohomology of an arithmetic group. In this short note, we give a cohomological interpretation of the Eichler-Shimura isomorphism as a connection morphism of certain exact sequence of G-modules, for the multiplicative group G of any quaternion algebra over a totally real field.
In this paper, we first reveal an intrinsic relation between non-abelian zeta functions and Epstein zeta functions for algebraic number fields. Then, we expose a fundamental relation between stability of lattices and distance to cusps. Next, using these two relations, we explicitly express rank two zeta functions in terms of the well-known Dedekind zeta functions. Finally, based on such an expression, we show that all zeros of rank two non-abelian zeta functions are entirely sitting on the critical line whose real part equals to 1/2. This is an integrated part of our Geo-Arithmetic Program.
