In this paper we investigate the arithmetic aspects of the theory of $\mathcal{E}_K^\dagger$-valued rigid cohomology introduced and studied in [11,12]. In particular we show that these cohomology groups have compatible connections and Frobenius structures, and therefore are naturally $(φ,\nabla)$-modules over $\mathcal{E}_K^\dagger$ whenever they are finite dimensional. We also introduce a category of `absolute' coefficients for the theory; the same results are true for cohomology groups with coefficients. We moreover prove a $p$-adic version of the weight monodromy conjecture for smooth (not necessarily proper) curves, and use a construction of Marmora to prove a version of $\ell$-independence for smooth curves over $k(\!(t)\!)$ that includes the case $\ell=p$. This states that after tensoring with $\mathcal{R}_K$, our $p$-adic cohomology groups agree with the $\ell$-adic Galois representations $H^i_{\mathrm{ét}}(X_{k(\!(t)\!)^\mathrm{sep}},\mathbb{Q}_\ell)$ for $\ell\neq p$.
In this paper we prove that the $\mathcal{E}^\dagger_K$-valued cohomology, introduced in [9] is finite dimensional for smooth curves over Laurent series fields $k((t))$ in positive characteristic, and forms an $\mathcal{E}^\dagger_K$-lattice inside `classical' $\mathcal{E}_K$-valued rigid cohomology. We do so by proving a suitable version of the p-adic local monodromy theory over $\mathcal{E}^\dagger_K$, and then using an étale pushforward for smooth curves to reduce to the case of $\mathbb{A}^1$. We then introduce $\mathcal{E}^\dagger_K$-valued cohomology with compact supports, and again prov…
This is the first in a series of papers in which we construct and study a new $p$-adic cohomology theory for varieties over Laurent series fields $k(\!(t)\!)$ in characteristic $p$. This will be a version of rigid cohomology, taking values in the bounded Robba ring $\mathcal{E}_K^\dagger$, and in this paper, we give the basic definitions and constructions. The cohomology theory we define can be viewed as a relative version of Berthelot's rigid cohomology, and is constructed by compactifying $k(\!(t)\!)$-varieties as schemes over $k[\![ t]\!]$ rather than over $k(\!(t)\!)$. We reprove the found…
We present an upper bound for the height of the isolated zeros in the torus of a system of Laurent polynomials over an adelic field satisfying the product formula. This upper bound is expressed in terms of the mixed integrals of the local roof functions associated to the chosen height function and to the system of Laurent polynomials. We also show that this bound is close to optimal in some families of examples. This result is an arithmetic analogue of the classical Bernštein-Kušnirenko theorem. Its proof is based on arithmetic intersection theory on toric varieties.
A result of Belyi can be stated as follows. Every curve defined over a number field can be expressed as a cover of the projective line with branch locus contained in a rigid divisor. We define the notion of geometrically rigid divisors in surfaces and then show that every surface defined over a number field can be expressed as a cover of the projective plane with branch locus contained in a geometrically rigid divisor in the plane. The main result is the characterisation of arithmetically defined divisors in the plane as geometrically rigid divisors in the plane.
Rigid, hard and soft problems and results in arithmetic geometry are presented. "Soft" and "hard" in our paper are limited to the framework of solutions of quadratic forms over rings of integers of local and global fields, the Hardy-Littlewood-Kloosterman method. Next we consider the notion of rigidity. In the framework we give review of some novel results in the aria.
We extend the work of Ash and Stevens [Ash-Stevens 97] on p-adic analytic families of p-ordinary arithmetic cohomology classes for GL(N,Q) by introducing and investigating the concept of p-adic rigidity of arithmetic Hecke eigenclasses. An arithmetic eigenclass is said to be "rigid" if (modulo twisting) it does not admit a nontrivial p-adic deformation containing a Zariski dense set of arithmetic specializations. This paper develops tools for explicit investigation into the structure of eigenvarieties for GL(N). We use these tools to prove that known examples of non-sefldual cohomological cusp…
The $T$-adic exponential sum associated to a Laurent polynomial in one variable is studied. An explicit arithmetic polygon is proved to be the generic Newton polygon of the $C$-function of the T-adic exponential sum. It gives the generic Newton polygon of $L$-functions of $p$-power order exponential sums.
The paper investigates some aspects of the geometry and the arithmetic of a non-rigid Calabi-Yau threefold. Particular emphasis is given to the study of its L-function L(H^3,s) and the Galois representation.
We construct Calabi-Yau threefolds defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ via quotients of abelian threefolds, and re-verify the rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds in this construction are modular by computing their L-series, without \cite{Dieulefait} or \cite{GouveaYui}. We compute the intermediate Jacobians of the rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds as complex tori, then compute a $\mathbb{Q}$-model for the 1-torus given a $\mathbb{Q}$-structure on the rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds, and find infinitely many examples and counterexamples for a conjecture of Yui about the relation between the $L$-series of the rigid Calabi-…
We provide lower bounds for p-adic valuations of multisums of factorial ratios which satisfy an Apéry-like recurrence relation: these include Apéry, Domb, Franel numbers, the numbers of abelian squares over a finite alphabet, and constant terms of powers of certain Laurent polynomials. In particular, we prove Beukers' conjectures on the p-adic valuation of Apéry numbers. Furthermore, we give an effective criterion for a sequence of factorial ratios to satisfy the p-Lucas property for almost all primes p.
The goal of this article is to prove a comparison theorem between rigid cohomology and cohomology computed using the theory of arithmetic $\mathscr{D}$-modules. To do this, we construct a specialisation functor from Le Stum's category of constructible isocrystals to the derived category of arithmetic $\mathscr{D}$-modules. For objects `of Frobenius type', we show that the essential image of this functor consists of overholonomic $\mathscr{D}^\dagger$-modules, and lies inside the heart of the dual constructible t-structure. We use this to give a more global construction of Caro's specialisation…
In one of the fundamental results of Arakelov's arithmetic intersection theory, Faltings and Hriljac (independently) proved the Hodge Index Theorem for arithmetic surfaces by relating the intersection pairing to the negative of the Néron-Tate height pairing. More recently, Moriwaki and Yuan-Zhang generalized this to higher dimension. In this work, we extend these results to projective varieties over transcendence degree one function fields. The new challenge is dealing with non-constant but numerically trivial line bundles coming from the constant field via Chow's $K/k$-trace functor. As an ap…
We describe connections between the Fourier coefficients of derivatives of Eisenstein series and invariants from the arithmetic geometry of the Shimura varieties $M$ associated to rational quadratic forms $(V,Q)$ of signature $(n,2)$. In the case $n=1$, we define generating series $\hatϕ_1(τ)$ for 1-cycles (resp. $\hatϕ_2(τ)$ for 0-cycles) on the arithmetic surface $\Cal M$ associated to a Shimura curve over $\Bbb Q$. These series are related to the second term in the Laurent expansion of an Eisenstein series of weight $\frac32$ and genus 1 (resp. genus 2) at the Siegel--Weil point, and these …
We compute, in a stable range, the arithmetic p-adic etale cohomology of smooth rigid analytic and dagger varieties (without any assumption on the existence of a nice integral model) in terms of differential forms using syntomic methods. The main technical input is a construction of a Hyodo-Kato cohomology and a Hyodo-Kato isomorphism with de Rham cohomology.
In this paper we consider the cohomology of a closed arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifold with coefficients in the local system defined by the even symmetric powers of the standard representation of SL(2,C). The cohomology is defined over the integers and is a finite abelian group. We show that the order of the 2nd cohomology grows exponentially as the local system grows. We also consider the twisted Ruelle zeta function of a closed arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifold and we express the leading coefficient of its Laurent expansion at the origin in terms of the orders of the torsion subgroups of the c…
We consider stacks of filtered phi-modules over rigid analytic spaces and adic spaces. We show that these modules parametrize p-adic Galois representations of the absolute Galois group of a p-adic field with varying coefficients over an open substack containing all classical points. Further we study a period morphism (defined by Pappas and Rapoport) from a stack parametrizing integral data and determine the image of this morphism.
Recently, Darmon and Vonk initiated the theory of rigid meromorphic cocycles for the group $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}[1/p])$. One of their major results is the algebraicity of the divisor associated to such a cocycle. We generalize the result to the setting of $\mathfrak{p}$-arithmetic subgroups of inner forms of $\mathrm{SL}_2$ over arbitrary number fields. The method of proof differs from the one of Darmon and Vonk. Their proof relies on an explicit description of the cohomology via modular symbols and continued fractions, whereas our main tool is Bieri-Eckmann duality for arithmetic groups.
We prove a rigidity theorem for semi-arithmetic Fuchsian groups: If $Γ_1$, $Γ_2$ are two semi-arithmetic lattices in $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ virtually admitting modular embeddings and $f\colonΓ_1\toΓ_2$ is a group isomorphism that respects the notion of congruence subgroups, then $f$ is induced by an inner automorphism of $\mathrm{PGL}(2,\mathbb{R})$.
We first develop some basic facts about certain sorts of rigid local systems on the affine line in characteristic $p>0$. We then apply them to exhibit a number of rigid local systems of rank $23$ on the affine line in characteristic $p=3$ whose arithmetic and geometric monodromy groups are the Conway group $\mathrm{Co}_3$ in its orthogonal irreducible representation of degree $23$.
We exhibit a rigid local system of rank six on the affine line in characteristic $p=5$ whose arithmetic and geometric monodromy groups are the finite group $2.J_2$ ($J_2$ the Hall-Janko sporadic group) in one of its two (Galois-conjugate) irreducible representation of degree six.
This is the first paper of a series. We prove an arithmetic Hodge index theorem for adelic line bundles on projective varieties over number fields. It extends the arithmetic Hodge index theorem of Faltings, Hriljac and Moriwaki on arithmetic varieties. As consequences, we obtain the uniqueness part of the non-archimedean Calabi--Yau theorem, and a rigidity property of the sets of preperiodic points of polarizable algebraic dynamical systems over number fields.
We first develop some basic facts about hypergeometric sheaves on the multiplicative group ${\mathbb G}_m$ in characteristic $p >0$. Certain of their Kummer pullbacks extend to irreducible local systems on the affine line in characteristic $p>0$. One of these, of rank $23$ in characteristic $p=3$, turns out to have the Conway group $\mathrm{Co}_2$, in its irreducible orthogonal representation of degree $23$, as its arithmetic and geometric monodromy groups.
We develop a theory of vector-valued heights and intersections defined relative to finitely generated extensions K/k. These generalize both number field and geometric heights. When k is Q or F_p, or when a non-isotriviality condition holds, we obtain Northcott-type results. We then prove a version of the Hodge Index Theorem for vector-valued intersections, and use it to prove a rigidity theorem for polarized dynamical systems over any field.
In the first three sections, we develop some basic facts about hypergeometric sheaves on the multiplicative group ${\mathbb G}_m$ in characteristic $p >0$. In the fourth and fifth sections, we specialize to quite special classses of hypergeomtric sheaves. We give relatively "simple" formulas for their trace functions, and a criterion for them to have finite monodromy. In the next section, we prove that three of them have finite monodromy groups. We then give some results on finite complex linear groups. We next use these group theoretic results to show that one of our local systems, of rank $24…
In this article, we use deformation theory of Galois representations valued in the symplectic group of degree four to prove a freeness result for the cohomology of certain quaternionic unitary Shimura variety over the universal deformation ring for certain type of residual representation satisfying a property called rigidity. This result plays an important role in the proof of the arithmetic level raising theorem for the symplectic similitude group of degree four over the field of rational numbers by the author.
Let $\k$ be a (topological) field of characteristic 0. Using a Drinfeld associator $Φ$, a representation $Φ(ρ)$ of the braid group over the field $\k((h))$ of Laurent series can be associated to any representation $ρ$ of a certain Hopf algebra $\mathfrak{B}_n(\k)$. We investigate the dependance in $Φ$ of $Φ(ρ)$ for a certain class of representations -- so-called GT-rigid representations -- and deduce from it (continuous) projective representations of the Grothendieck-Teichmuller group $GT_1(\k)$, hence for $\k = \Q_l$ representations of the absolute Galois group of $\Q(μ_{l^{\infty}})$. In mos…
Let $K$ be a complete discrete valuation field with residue class field $k$, where both are of positive characteristic $p$. Then the group of wild automorphisms of $K$ can be identified with the group under composition of formal power series over $k$ with no constant term and $X$-coefficient $1$. Under the hypothesis that $p > b^2$, we compute the first nontrivial coefficient of the $p$th iterate of a power series over $k$ of the form $f = X + \sum_{i \geq 1} a_iX^{b+i}$. As a result, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for an automorphism to be ``$b$-ramified,'' having lower ramifi…
We create plots of algebraic integers in the complex plane, exploring the effect of sizing the integers according to various arithmetic invariants. We focus on Galois theoretic invariants, in particular creating plots which emphasize algebraic integers whose Galois group is not the full symmetric group--these integers we call rigid. We then give some analysis of the resulting images, suggesting avenues for future research about the geometry of so-called rigid algebraic integers.
Building on our previous work on rigid analytic uniformizations, we introduce Darmon points on Jacobians of Shimura curves attached to quaternion algebras over Q and formulate conjectures about their rationality properties. Moreover, if K is a real quadratic field, E is an elliptic curve over Q without complex multiplication and χis a ring class character such that L(E/K,χ,1) is not 0 we prove a Gross-Zagier type formula relating Darmon points to a suitably defined algebraic part of L(E/K,χ,1); this generalizes results of Bertolini, Darmon and Dasgupta to the case of division quaternion algebr…
We prove that if a linear group $Γ\subset \mathrm{GL}_n(K)$ over a field $K$ of characteristic zero is boundedly generated by semi-simple (diagonalizable) elements then it is virtually solvable. As a consequence, one obtains that infinite $S$-arithmetic subgroups of absolutely almost simple anisotropic algebraic groups over number fields are never boundedly generated. Our proof relies on Laurent's theorem from Diophantine geometry and properties of generic elements.

This is the second paper of a series. It extends the results of the first paper from number fields to finitely generated fields, based on the recent theory of adelic line bundles of the same authors. We prove an arithmetic Hodge index theorem for these adelic line bundles, and apply the theorem to obtain a rigidity property of the sets of preperiodic points of polarizable algebraic dynamical systems over any field.
Let X be a smooth proper curve over a finite field of characteristic p. We prove a product formula for p-adic epsilon factors of arithmetic D-modules on X. In particular we deduce the analogous formula for overconvergent F-isocrystals, which was conjectured previously. The p-adic product formula is the equivalent in rigid cohomology of the Deligne-Laumon formula for epsilon factors in l-adic étale cohomology (for a prime l different from p). One of the main tools in the proof of this p-adic formula is a theorem of regular stationary phase for arithmetic D-modules that we prove by microlocal te…

In this article we study the nonvanishing of cuspidal cohomology for GL(n). Using endoscopic transfer from various classical groups we construct cuspidal representations of GL(n) of cohomological type while working over a totally real field or a totally imaginary quadratic extension of a totally real field. Generalizing a construction of Laurent Clozel, we also prove nonvanishing of cuspidal cohomology of GL(2n) over any number field but only for coefficient systems coming from parallel weights. Working at an arithmetic level, we also draw some inferences on an endoscopic stratification of inn…
These are lecture notes from a course in arithmetic dynamics given in Grenoble in June 2017. The main purpose of this text is to explain how arithmetic equidistribution theory can be used in the dynamics of rational maps on P^1. We first briefly introduce the basics of the iteration theory of rational maps on the projective line over C, as well as some elements of iteration theory over an arbitrary complete valued field and the construction of dynamically defined height functions for rational functions defined over \overline Q. The equidistribution of small points gives some original informati…
Let $K$ be a discrete valuation field with perfect residue field, we study the functor from weakly admissible filtered $(φ,N,G_K)$-modules over $K$ to the isogeny category of Breuil-Kisin-Fargues $G_K$-modules. This functor is the composition of a functor defined by Fargues-Fontaine from weakly admissible filtered $(φ,N,G_K)$-modules to $G_K$-equivariant modifications of vector bundles over the Fargues-Fontaine curve $X_{FF}$, with the functor of Fargues-Scholze that between the category of admissible modifications of vector bundles over $X_{FF}$ and the isogeny category of Breuil-Kisin-Fargue…
We construct arithmetic Kleinian groups that are profinitely rigid in the absolute sense: each is distinguished from all other finitely generated, residually finite groups by its set of finite quotients. The Bianchi group $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z}[ω])$ with $ω^2+ω+1=0$ is rigid in this sense. Other examples include the non-uniform lattice of minimal co-volume in $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ and the fundamental group of the Weeks manifold (the closed hyperbolic $3$-manifold of minimal volume).
We use hypergeometric sheaves on $G_m/F_q$, which are particular sorts of rigid local systems, to construct explicit local systems whose arithmetic and geometric monodromy groups are the finite general linear groups $GL_n(q)$ for any $n \ge 2$ and and any prime power $q$, so long as $q > 3$ when $n=2$. This paper continues a program of finding simple (in the sense of simple to remember) families of exponential sums whose monodromy groups are certain finite groups of Lie type, cf. [Gr], [KT1], [KT2], [KT3] for (certain) finite symplectic and unitary groups, or certain sporadic groups, cf. [KRL]…
Type IIA string theory compactified on a rigid Calabi-Yau threefold gives rise to a classical moduli space that carries an isometric action of U(2,1). Various quantum corrections break this continuous isometry to a discrete subgroup. Focussing on the case where the intermediate Jacobian of the Calabi-Yau admits complex multiplication by the ring of quadratic imaginary integers O_d, we argue that the remaining quantum duality group is an arithmetic Picard modular group PU(2,1;O_d). Based on this proposal we construct an Eisenstein series invariant under this duality group and study its non-Abel…
This book provides a gentle introduction to the study of arithmetic subgroups of semisimple Lie groups. This means that the goal is to understand the group SL(n,Z) and certain of its subgroups. Among the major results discussed in the later chapters are the Mostow Rigidity Theorem, the Margulis Superrigidity Theorem, Ratner's Theorems, and the classification of arithmetic subgroups of classical groups. As background for the proofs of these theorems, the book provides primers on lattice subgroups, arithmetic groups, real rank and Q-rank, ergodic theory, unitary representations, amenability, Kaz…
In earlier work, Katz exhibited some very simple one parameter families of exponential sums which gave rigid local systems on the affine line in characteristic p whose geometric (and usually, arithmetic) monodromy groups were SL(2,q), and he exhibited other such very simple families giving SU(3,q). [Here q is a power of the characteristic p with p odd]. In this paper, we exhibit equally simple families whose geometric monodromy groups are the alternating groups Alt(2q). $. We also determine their arithmetic monodromy groups. By Raynaud's solution of the Abhyankar Conjecture, any finite simple …
The goal of this paper is to establish a general rigidity statement for abstract representations of elementary subgroups of Chevalley groups of rank at least 2 over a class of commutative rings that includes the localizations of 1-generated rings and the coordinate rings of affine curves. This is achieved by developing the approach introduced in our previous work, and in particular by verifying condition (Z) over the class of rings at hand. Our main result implies, for example, that any finite-dimensional representation of SL_n(Z[X]) (for n at least 3) over an algebraically closed field of cha…
