We describe connections between the Fourier coefficients of derivatives of Eisenstein series and invariants from the arithmetic geometry of the Shimura varieties $M$ associated to rational quadratic forms $(V,Q)$ of signature $(n,2)$. In the case $n=1$, we define generating series $\hatϕ_1(τ)$ for 1-cycles (resp. $\hatϕ_2(τ)$ for 0-cycles) on the arithmetic surface $\Cal M$ associated to a Shimura curve over $\Bbb Q$. These series are related to the second term in the Laurent expansion of an Eisenstein series of weight $\frac32$ and genus 1 (resp. genus 2) at the Siegel--Weil point, and these relations can be seen as examples of an `arithmetic' Siegel--Weil formula. Some partial results and conjectures for higher dimensional cases are also discussed.
In this paper, we will study the arithmetic of the Eisenstein part of the modular Jacobians. In the first section, we introduce some general preliminaries of the arithmetic theory of modular curves that we will need later. In the second section, we give an example of modular abelian varieties due to Gross and study its properties in some details. In the third section, we define Eisenstein quotients of the modular Jacobians in general and give a criterion of the non-triviality of Heegner points on such Eisenstein quotients. The last two sections return to the concrete examples when the level of…
We extend Lax-Phillips' theorem on discreteness of pseudo-cuspforms, in the style of Colin de Verdi{è}re's use of the Friedrichs self-adjoint extension of a restriction of the Laplace-Beltrami operator, as opposed to the use of semigroup methods. We use this to prove meromorphic continuation of Eisenstein series in several $\mathbb{Q}$-rank one cases, again following Colin de Verdi{è}re, as opposed to the semigroup-oriented viewpoint of Lax-Phillips and W. Mueller.
We study a certain class of q-analogues of multiple zeta values, which appear in the Fourier expansion of multiple Eisenstein series. Studying their algebraic structure and their derivatives we propose conjectured explicit formulas for the derivatives of double and triple Eisenstein series.
We give a formula for certain values and derivatives of Siegel series and use them to compute Fourier coefficients of derivatives of the Siegel Eisenstein series of weight g/2 and genus g. When g=4, the Fourier coefficient is approximated by a certain Fourier coefficient of the central derivative of the Siegel Eisenstein series of weight 2 and genus 3, which is related to the intersection of 3 arithmetic modular correspondences. Applications include a relation between weighted averages of representation numbers of symmetric matrices.
The aim of this article is to study the derivative of "incoherent" Siegel-Eisenstein series on symplectic groups over function fields. By the Siegel-Weil formula for "coherent" Siegel-Eisenstein series, we can relate the non-singular Fourier coefficients of the derivative in question to the arithmetic of quadratic forms. Restricting to the special case when the incoherent quadratic space has dimension 2, we explicitly compute all the Fourier coefficients, and connect the derivative with the special cycles on the coarse moduli schemes of rank 2 Drinfeld modules with "complex multiplication."
In this article, several cohomology spaces associated to the arithmetic groups $\mathrm{SL}_3(\mathbb{Z})$ and $\mathrm{GL}_3(\mathbb{Z})$ with coefficients in any highest weight representation $\mathcal{M}_λ$ have been computed, where $λ$ denotes their highest weight. Consequently, we obtain detailed information of their Eisenstein cohomology with coefficients in $\mathcal{M}_λ$. When $\mathcal{M}_λ$ is not self dual, the Eisenstein cohomology coincides with the cohomology of the underlying arithmetic group with coefficients in $\mathcal{M}_λ$. In particular, for such a large class of represe…
We formulate and prove a version of the arithmetic Siegel-Weil formula for (zero dimensional) Shimura varieties attached to tori, equipped with some additional data. More precisely, we define a family of ``special" divisors in terms of Green functions at archimedean and non-archimedean places, and prove that their degrees coincide with the Fourier coefficients of the central derivative of an Eisenstein series. The proof relies on the usual Siegel-Weil formula to provide a direct link between both sides of the identity, and in some sense, offers a more conceptual point of view on prior results …
Let $k$ be even. We consider two series $F_k(x)= \sum_{n=1}^\infty \frac{σ_{k-1}(n)}{n^{k+1}} \sin(2πn x)$ and $G_k(x)= \sum_{n=1}^\infty \frac{σ_{k-1}(n)}{n^{k+1}} \cos(2πn x)$, where $σ_{k-1}$ is the divisor function. They converge on $\mathbb{R}$ to continuous functions. In this paper, we examine the differentiability of $F_k$ and $G_k$. These functions are related to Eisenstein series and their (quasi-)modular properties allow us to apply the method proposed by Itatsu in 1981 in the study of the Riemann series. We focus on the case $k=2$ and we show that the sine series exhibits different …
Let V be a rational quadratic space of signature (m,2). A conjecture of Kudla relates the arithmetic degrees of top degree special cycles on an integral model of a Shimura variety associated with SO(V) to the coefficients of the central derivative of an incoherent Siegel Eisenstein series of genus m+1. We prove this conjecture for the coefficients of non-singular index T when T is not positive definite. We also prove it when T is positive definite and the corresponding special cycle has dimension 0. To obtain these results, we establish new local arithmetic Siegel-Weil formulas at the archimed…
Using deformed or twisted Eisenstein Series, we construct a Jacobi-Serre derivative on even-weight Jacobi forms that generalizes the classical Serre derivative on modular forms. As an application, we obtain Ramanujan equations for the index $1$ Eisenstein series $E_{4,1}, E_{6,1}$ and a newly defined $E_{2,1}$. Finally, we relate the deformed Eisenstein Series directly to the classical first Jacobi theta function.
We combine Zagier's theory of renormalizable automorphic functions on the hyperbolic plane with the analytic continuation of representations of $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ due to Bernstein and Reznikov to study triple products of Eisenstein series of arbitrary (in particular, non-arithmetic) non-compact finite-volume hyperbolic surfaces.
We calculate the constant terms of certain Hilbert modular Eisenstein series at all cusps. Our formula relates these constant terms to special values of Hecke $L$-series. This builds on previous work of Ozawa, in which a restricted class of Eisenstein series were studied. Our results have direct arithmetic applications---in separate work we apply these formulas to prove the Brumer-Stark conjecture away from $p=2$ and to give an exact analytic formula for Brumer-Stark units.
We develop some of the finer details of the location of the zeros of the weight two Eisenstein series. These zeros are the same as the zeros of the derivative of the Ramanujan delta function.

In his paper, 'On torsion in the cohomology of locally symmetric varieties', Peter Scholze has introduced a new, purely topological method to construct the cohomology classes on arithmetic quotients of symmetric spaces of rational reductive groups originating from the cohomology of the similar quotients of Levi subgroups of maximal parabolic subgroups. We extend this construction beyond the cases he considers, and, in the complex case, to the cohomology of local systems.
We study the (mock) Eisenstein series $E_k$ of weight $k \in \{1,3/2,2\}$ for the Weil representation on an even lattice, defined as the result of Bruinier and Kuss's coefficient formula for the Eisenstein series naively evaluated at $k$. We describe the transformation law of $E_k$ in general. Most of this note is dedicated to collecting examples where the coefficients of $E_k$ contain interesting arithmetic information. Finally we make a few remarks about the case $k=1/2$.
The cohomology $H^*(Γ, E) $ of a torsion-free arithmetic subgroup $Γ$ of the special linear $\mathbb{Q}$-group $\mathsf{G} = SL_n$ may be interpreted in terms of the automorphic spectrum of $Γ$. Within this framework, there is a decomposition of the cohomology into the cuspidal cohomology and the Eisenstein cohomology. The latter space is decomposed according to the classes $\{\mathsf{P}\}$ of associate proper parabolic $\mathbb{Q}$-subgroups of $\mathsf{G}$. Each summand $H^*_{\mathrm{\{P\}}}(Γ, E)$ is built up by Eisenstein series (or residues of such) attached to cuspidal automorphic forms …
We study the arithmetic of degree $N-1$ Eisenstein cohomology classes for locally symmetric spaces associated to $\mathrm{GL}_N$ over an imaginary quadratic field $k$. Under natural conditions we evaluate these classes on $(N-1)$-cycles associated to degree $N$ extensions $F/k$ as linear combinations of generalised Dedekind sums. As a consequence we prove a remarkable conjecture of Sczech and Colmez expressing critical values of $L$-functions attached to Hecke characters of $F$ as polynomials in Kronecker--Eisenstein series evaluated at torsion points on elliptic curves with multiplication by …
Following a strategy suggested by Michel--Venkatesh, we study the cubic moment of automorphic $L$-functions on $\operatorname{PGL}_2$ using regularized diagonal periods of products of Eisenstein series. Our main innovation is to produce vectors whose integral transforms achieve arbitrarily weighted moments. Applications include general Motohashi-type identities and Weyl-type subconvex bounds for some families of $L$-functions, extending some results of Conrey--Iwaniec and Petrow--Young to the number field setting. We deduce improved estimates for representation numbers of ternary quadratic for…
In this article, Eisenstein cohomology of the arithmetic group $G_2(\mathbb{Z})$ with coefficients in any finite dimensional highest weight irreducible representation has been determined. We accomplish this by studying the cohomology of the boundary of the Borel-Serre compactification.
We study certain types of Fuchsian groups of the first kind denoted by $R(N)$, which coincide with the Fricke groups or the arithmetic Hecke triangle groups of low levels. We find all elliptic points and cusps of $R(p)$ for a prime $p$, and prove that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the set of equivalence classes of elliptic points of $R(p)$ and the imaginary quadratic class group. We also find the explicit formula of the Fourier expansion of the non-holomorphic Eisenstein series for $R(N)$ and study their analytic properties. These non-holomorphic Eisenstein series together with …
This article sketches relations among algebraic cycles for the Shimura varieties defined by arithmetic quotients of symmetric domains for O(n,2), theta functions, values and derivatives of Eisenstein series and values and derivatives of certain L-functions. In the geometric case, results of joint work with John Millson imply that the generating functions for the classes in cohomology of certain algebraic cycles of codimension r are Siegel modular forms of genus r and weight n/2+1. A result of Borcherds shows that, for r=1, the same is true for the generating function for the classes of such di…
We prove a relation between a generating series for the heights of Heegner cycles on the arithmetic surface associated to a Shimura curve and the second term in the Laurent expansion at s=1/2 of an Eisenstein series of weight 3/2 for SL(2). On the geometric side, a typical coefficient of the generating series involves the Faltings heights of abelian surfaces isogenous to a product of CM elliptic curves, an archimedean contribution, and contributions from vertical components in the fibers of bad reduction. On the analytic side, these terms arise via the derivatives of local Whittaker functions.…
In a recent work of Darmon, Pozzi and Vonk, the authors consider a particular $p$-adic family of Hilbert Eisenstein series $E_k(1,\brch)$ associated with an odd character $\brch$ of the narrow ideal class group of a real quadratic field $F$ and compute the first derivative of a certain one-variable twisted triple product $p$-adic $L$-series attached to $E_k(1,\brch)$ and an elliptic newform $f$ of weight $2$ on $Γ_0(p)$. In this paper, we generalize their construction to include the cyclotomic variable and thus obtain a two-variable twisted triple product $p$-adic $L$-series. Moreover, when $f…
We discuss certain Eisenstein series on arithmetic quotients of loop groups, G^, which are associated to cusp forms on finite-dimensional groups associated with maximal parabolics of G^.
We compute the non-Eisenstein systems of Hecke eigenvalues contributing to the $p$-arithmetic homology of irreducible smooth mod $p$ representations $π$ of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$ and to the cohomology of their duals. We show that in most cases they are associated to odd irreducible 2-dimensional Galois representations whose local component at $p$ corresponds under the mod $p$ local Langlands correspondence to a smooth representation that contains $π$ as a subrepresentation.
We give expressions for the Serre derivatives of Eisenstein and Poincaré series as well as their Rankin-Cohen brackets with arbitrary modular forms in terms of the Poincaré averaging construction, and derive several identities for the Ramanujan tau function as applications.
We apply the theory of Borcherds products to calculate arithmetic volumes (heights) of Shimura varieties of orthogonal type up to contributions from very bad primes. The approach is analogous to the well-known computation of their geometric volume by induction, using special cycles. A functorial theory of integral models of toroidal compactifications of those varieties and a theory of arithmetic Chern classes of integral automorphic vector bundles with singular metrics are used. We obtain some evidence in the direction of Kudla's conjectures on relations of heights of special cycles on these v…
In this paper, we prove an asymptotic formula for the quantum variance for Eisenstein series on $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{Z})\backslash \mathbb{H}$. The resulting quadratic form is compared with the classical variance and the quantum variance for cusp forms. They coincide after inserting certain subtle arithmetic factors, including the central values of certain L-functions.

We consider the Hermitian Eisenstein series $E^{(\mathbb{K})}_k$ of degree $2$ and weight $k$ associated with an imaginary-quadratic number field $\mathbb{K}$ and determine the influence of $\mathbb{K}$ on the arithmetic and the growth of its Fourier coefficients. We find that they satisfy the identity $E^{{(\mathbb{K})}^2}_4 = E^{{(\mathbb{K})}}_8$, which is well-known for Siegel modular forms of degree $2$, if and only if $\mathbb{K} = \mathbb{Q} (\sqrt{-3})$. As an application, we show that the Eisenstein series $E^{(\mathbb{K})}_k$, $k=4,6,8,10,12$ are algebraically independent whenever $\…
For any even integer $k \ge 4$, let $\E_k$ be the normalized Eisenstein series of weight $k$ for $\SL_2(\Z)$. Also let $\D$ be the closure of the standard fundamental domain of the Poincaré upper half plane modulo $\SL_2(\Z)$. F.~K.~C.~Rankin and H. P. F. Swinnerton-Dyer showed that all zeros of $\E_k$ in $\D$ are of modulus one. In this article, we study the critical points of $\E_k$, that is to say the zeros of the derivative of $\E_k$. We show that they are simple. We count those belonging to $\D$, prove that they are located on the two vertical edges of $\D$ and produce explicit intervals …
We characterize Giuga Numbers as solutions to the equation $n'=an+1$, with $a \in \mathbb{N}$ and $n'$ being the arithmetic derivative. Although this fact does not refute Lava's conjecture, it brings doubts about its veracity.
We define a family of arithmetic zero cycles in the arithmetic Chow group of a modular curve X_0(N), for N>3 odd and squarefree, and identify the arithmetic degrees of these cycles as q-coefficients of the central derivative of a Siegel Eisenstein series of genus two. This parallels work of Kudla-Rapoport-Yang for Shimura curves.
In [Tha15], we looked at two (`multiplicative' and `Carlitz-Drinfeld additive') analogs each, for the well-known basic congruences of Fermat and Wilson, in the case of polynomials over finite fields. When we look at them modulo higher powers of primes, i.e. at `supercongruences', we find interesting relations linking them together, as well as linking them with arithmetic derivatives and zeta values. In the current work, we expand on the first analog and connections with arithmetic derivatives more systematically, giving many more equivalent conditions linking the two, now using `mixed derivati…
We define certain arithmetic derivatives on $\mathbb{Z}$ that respect the Leibniz rule, are additive for a chosen equation $a+b=c$, and satisfy a suitable non-degeneracy condition. Using Geometry of Numbers, we unconditionally show their existence with controlled size. We prove that any power-saving improvement on our size bounds would give a version of the $abc$ Conjecture. In fact, we show that the existence of sufficiently small arithmetic derivatives in our sense is equivalent to the $abc$ Conjecture. Our results give an explicit manifestation of an analogy suggested by Vojta in the eighti…
We study Whittaker coefficients for maximal parabolic Eisenstein series on metaplectic covers of split reductive groups. By the theory of Eisenstein series these coefficients have meromorphic continuation and functional equation. However they are not Eulerian and the standard methods to compute them in the reductive case do not apply to covers. For "cominuscule" maximal parabolics, we give an explicit description of the coefficients as Dirichlet series whose arithmetic content is expressed in an exponential sum. The exponential sum is then shown to satisfy a twisted multiplicativity, reducing …
The arithmetic partial derivative (with respect to a prime $p$) is a function from the set of integers that sends $p$ to 1 and satisfies the Leibniz rule. In this paper, we prove that the $p$-adic valuation of the sequence of higher order partial derivatives is eventually periodic. We also prove a criterion to determine when an integer has integral anti-partial derivatives. As an application, we show that there are infinitely many integers with exactly $n$ integral anti-partial derivatives for any nonnegative integer $n$.
In this paper we compare several properties and constructions of the Carlitz polynomials and digit derivatives for continuous functions on $\F_q[[T]].$ In particular, we show a close relation between them as orthonormal bases. Moreover, parallel to Carlitz's coefficient formula, we give the closed formula for the expansion coefficients in terms of the digit derivatives.
Given an indefinite binary quaternionic Hermitian form $f$ with coefficients in a maximal order of a definite quaternion algebra over $\mathbb Q$, we give a precise asymptotic equivalent to the number of nonequivalent representations, satisfying some congruence properties, of the rational integers with absolute value at most $s$ by $f$, as $s$ tends to $+\infty$. We compute the volumes of hyperbolic 5-manifolds constructed by quaternions using Eisenstein series. In the Appendix, V. Emery computes these volumes using Prasad's general formula. We use hyperbolic geometry in dimension 5 to describ…
The space of toroidal automorphic forms was introduced by Zagier in 1979. Let $F$ be a global field. An automorphic form on $\GL(2)$ is toroidal if it has vanishing constant Fourier coefficients along all embedded non-split tori. The interest in this space stems from the fact (amongst others) that an Eisenstein series of weight $s$ is toroidal if $s$ is a non-trivial zero of the zeta function, and thus a connection with the Riemann hypothesis is established. In this paper, we concentrate on the function field case. We show the following results. The $(n-1)$-th derivative of a non-trivial Eisen…
