This article sketches relations among algebraic cycles for the Shimura varieties defined by arithmetic quotients of symmetric domains for O(n,2), theta functions, values and derivatives of Eisenstein series and values and derivatives of certain L-functions. In the geometric case, results of joint work with John Millson imply that the generating functions for the classes in cohomology of certain algebraic cycles of codimension r are Siegel modular forms of genus r and weight n/2+1. A result of Borcherds shows that, for r=1, the same is true for the generating function for the classes of such divisors in the Chow group. By the Siegel-Weil formula, the generating function for the volumes of codimension r cycles coincides with a value of a Siegel-Eisenstein series of genus r. In particular, this gives an interpretation of the Fourier coefficients of these Eisenstein series as volumes of algebraic cycles. The second part of the paper discusses the possible analogues of these results in the arithmetic case, where the special values of derivatives of Eisenstein series arise. In this case, the Fourier coefficients of such derivatives are should be the heights (arithmetic volumes) of certain cycles on integral models of the O(n,2) type Shimura varieties. Relations of this sort would yield relations between central derivatives of certain L-functions and height pairings. The case of curves on a Siegel 3-fold and of the central derivative of a triple product L-function are discussed.
Let V be a rational quadratic space of signature (m,2). A conjecture of Kudla relates the arithmetic degrees of top degree special cycles on an integral model of a Shimura variety associated with SO(V) to the coefficients of the central derivative of an incoherent Siegel Eisenstein series of genus m+1. We prove this conjecture for the coefficients of non-singular index T when T is not positive definite. We also prove it when T is positive definite and the corresponding special cycle has dimension 0. To obtain these results, we establish new local arithmetic Siegel-Weil formulas at the archimed…
We study a certain class of q-analogues of multiple zeta values, which appear in the Fourier expansion of multiple Eisenstein series. Studying their algebraic structure and their derivatives we propose conjectured explicit formulas for the derivatives of double and triple Eisenstein series.
We prove a relation between a generating series for the heights of Heegner cycles on the arithmetic surface associated to a Shimura curve and the second term in the Laurent expansion at s=1/2 of an Eisenstein series of weight 3/2 for SL(2). On the geometric side, a typical coefficient of the generating series involves the Faltings heights of abelian surfaces isogenous to a product of CM elliptic curves, an archimedean contribution, and contributions from vertical components in the fibers of bad reduction. On the analytic side, these terms arise via the derivatives of local Whittaker functions.…
We give a formula for certain values and derivatives of Siegel series and use them to compute Fourier coefficients of derivatives of the Siegel Eisenstein series of weight g/2 and genus g. When g=4, the Fourier coefficient is approximated by a certain Fourier coefficient of the central derivative of the Siegel Eisenstein series of weight 2 and genus 3, which is related to the intersection of 3 arithmetic modular correspondences. Applications include a relation between weighted averages of representation numbers of symmetric matrices.
The aim of this article is to study the derivative of "incoherent" Siegel-Eisenstein series on symplectic groups over function fields. By the Siegel-Weil formula for "coherent" Siegel-Eisenstein series, we can relate the non-singular Fourier coefficients of the derivative in question to the arithmetic of quadratic forms. Restricting to the special case when the incoherent quadratic space has dimension 2, we explicitly compute all the Fourier coefficients, and connect the derivative with the special cycles on the coarse moduli schemes of rank 2 Drinfeld modules with "complex multiplication."
For any odd integer N, we explicitly write down the Eisenstein cycles in the first homology group of modular curves of level N as linear combinations of Manin symbols. These cycles are, by definition, those over which every integral of holomorphic differential forms vanish. Our result can be seen as an explicit version of the Manin-Drinfeld Theorem. Our method is to characterize such Eisenstein cycles as eigenvectors for the Hecke operators. We make crucial use of expressions of Hecke actions on modular symbols and on auxiliary level 2 structures.
We consider a certain family of Kudla-Rapoport cycles on an integral model of a Shimura variety attached to a unitary group of signature (1,1), and prove that the arithmetic degrees of these cycles can be identified with the Fourier coefficients of the central derivative of an Eisenstein series of genus 2. The integral model in question parametrizes abelian surfaces equipped with a non-principal polarization and an action of an imaginary quadratic number ring, and in this setting the cycles are degenerate: they may contain components of positive dimension. This result can be viewed as confirma…
We formulate and prove a version of the arithmetic Siegel-Weil formula for (zero dimensional) Shimura varieties attached to tori, equipped with some additional data. More precisely, we define a family of ``special" divisors in terms of Green functions at archimedean and non-archimedean places, and prove that their degrees coincide with the Fourier coefficients of the central derivative of an Eisenstein series. The proof relies on the usual Siegel-Weil formula to provide a direct link between both sides of the identity, and in some sense, offers a more conceptual point of view on prior results …
Consider a subgroup of finite index of modular group. We give an analytic criterion for a cuspidal divisor to be torsion in the Jacobian of the corresponding modular curve. By BelyI theorem, such a criterion would apply to any curve over a number field. Our main tool is the explicit description, in terms of modular symbols, of what we call Eisenstein cycles. The latter are representations of relative homology classes over which integration of any holomorphic differential forms vanishes. Our approach relies in an essential way on the specific case , where we can consider convenient generalized …
We describe connections between the Fourier coefficients of derivatives of Eisenstein series and invariants from the arithmetic geometry of the Shimura varieties $M$ associated to rational quadratic forms $(V,Q)$ of signature $(n,2)$. In the case $n=1$, we define generating series $\hatϕ_1(τ)$ for 1-cycles (resp. $\hatϕ_2(τ)$ for 0-cycles) on the arithmetic surface $\Cal M$ associated to a Shimura curve over $\Bbb Q$. These series are related to the second term in the Laurent expansion of an Eisenstein series of weight $\frac32$ and genus 1 (resp. genus 2) at the Siegel--Weil point, and these …

Using deformed or twisted Eisenstein Series, we construct a Jacobi-Serre derivative on even-weight Jacobi forms that generalizes the classical Serre derivative on modular forms. As an application, we obtain Ramanujan equations for the index $1$ Eisenstein series $E_{4,1}, E_{6,1}$ and a newly defined $E_{2,1}$. Finally, we relate the deformed Eisenstein Series directly to the classical first Jacobi theta function.
We develop some of the finer details of the location of the zeros of the weight two Eisenstein series. These zeros are the same as the zeros of the derivative of the Ramanujan delta function.
We give a formula for the values of automorphic Green functions on the special rational 0-cycles (big CM points) attached to certain maximal tori in the Shimura varieties associated to rational quadratic spaces of signature (2d,2). Our approach depends on the fact that the Green functions in question are constructed as regularized theta lifts of harmonic weak Mass forms, and it involves the Siegel-Weil formula and the central derivatives of incoherent Eisenstein series for totally real fields. In the case of a weakly holomorphic form, the formula is an explicit combination of quantities obtain…
We generalize Sczech's Eisenstein cocycle for $\mathrm{GL}(n)$ over totally real extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ to finite extensions of imaginary quadratic fields. By evaluating the cocycle on certain cycles, we parametrize complex values of Hecke L-functions previously considered by Colmez, giving a cohomological interpretation of his algebraicity result on special values of the L-functions.
In this survey article, we discuss the algebraic structure of q-analogues of multiple zeta values, which are closely related to derivatives of Eisenstein series. Moreover, we introduce the formal double Eisenstein space, which generalizes the formal double zeta space of Gangl, Kaneko, and Zagier. Using the algebraic structure of q-analogues of multiple zeta values, we will present a realization of this space. As an application, we will obtain purely combinatorial proofs of identities among (quasi-)modular forms.
We describe a conjectural construction (in the spirit of Hilbert's 12th problem) of units in abelian extensions of certain base fields which are neither totally real nor CM. These base fields are quadratic extensions with exactly one complex place of a totally real number field F, and are referred to as Almost Totally real (ATR) extensions. Our construction involves certain null-homologous topological cycles on the Hilbert modular variety attached to F. The special units are the images of these cycles under a map defined by integration of weight two Eisenstein series on GL_2(F). This map is fo…
In this paper, we consider normalized newforms $f\in S_k(Γ_0(N),\varepsilon_f)$ whose non-constant term Fourier coefficients are congruent to those of an Eisenstein series modulo some prime ideal above a rational prime $p$. In this situation, we establish a congruence between the anticyclotomic $p$-adic $L$-function of Bertolini-Darmon-Prasanna and the Katz two-variable $p$-adic $L$-function. From this, we derive congruences between images under the $p$-adic Abel-Jacobi map of certain generalized Heegner cycles attached to $f$ and special values of the Katz $p$-adic $L$-function. In particular…
In a recent work of Darmon, Pozzi and Vonk, the authors consider a particular $p$-adic family of Hilbert Eisenstein series $E_k(1,\brch)$ associated with an odd character $\brch$ of the narrow ideal class group of a real quadratic field $F$ and compute the first derivative of a certain one-variable twisted triple product $p$-adic $L$-series attached to $E_k(1,\brch)$ and an elliptic newform $f$ of weight $2$ on $Γ_0(p)$. In this paper, we generalize their construction to include the cyclotomic variable and thus obtain a two-variable twisted triple product $p$-adic $L$-series. Moreover, when $f…
We study the arithmetic of degree $N-1$ Eisenstein cohomology classes for locally symmetric spaces associated to $\mathrm{GL}_N$ over an imaginary quadratic field $k$. Under natural conditions we evaluate these classes on $(N-1)$-cycles associated to degree $N$ extensions $F/k$ as linear combinations of generalised Dedekind sums. As a consequence we prove a remarkable conjecture of Sczech and Colmez expressing critical values of $L$-functions attached to Hecke characters of $F$ as polynomials in Kronecker--Eisenstein series evaluated at torsion points on elliptic curves with multiplication by …
We give expressions for the Serre derivatives of Eisenstein and Poincaré series as well as their Rankin-Cohen brackets with arbitrary modular forms in terms of the Poincaré averaging construction, and derive several identities for the Ramanujan tau function as applications.
For any even integer $k \ge 4$, let $\E_k$ be the normalized Eisenstein series of weight $k$ for $\SL_2(\Z)$. Also let $\D$ be the closure of the standard fundamental domain of the Poincaré upper half plane modulo $\SL_2(\Z)$. F.~K.~C.~Rankin and H. P. F. Swinnerton-Dyer showed that all zeros of $\E_k$ in $\D$ are of modulus one. In this article, we study the critical points of $\E_k$, that is to say the zeros of the derivative of $\E_k$. We show that they are simple. We count those belonging to $\D$, prove that they are located on the two vertical edges of $\D$ and produce explicit intervals …
We study the Eisenstein ideal for modular forms of even weight $k>2$ and prime level $N$. We pay special attention to the phenomenon of $\mathit{extra \ reducibility}$: the Eisenstein ideal is strictly larger than the ideal cutting out reducible Galois representations. We prove a modularity theorem for these extra reducible representations. As consequences, we relate the derivative of a Mazur-Tate $L$-function to the rank of the Hecke algebra, generalizing a theorem of Merel, and give a new proof of a special case of an equivariant main conjecture of Kato. In the second half of the paper, we r…
We study the intersections of special cycles on a unitary Shimura variety of signature (n-1,1), and show that the intersection multiplicities of these cycles agree with Fourier coefficients of Eisenstein series. The results are new cases of conjectures of Kudla, and suggest a Gross-Zagier theorem for unitary Shimura varieties.
Zagier proved that the traces of singular moduli, i.e., the sums of the values of the classical j-invariant over quadratic irrationalities, are the Fourier coefficients of a modular form of weight 3/2 with poles at the cusps. Using the theta correspondence, we generalize this result to traces of CM values of (weakly holomorphic) modular functions on modular curves of arbitrary genus. We also study the theta lift for the weight 0 Eisenstein series for SL(2,Z) and realize a certain generating series of arithmetic intersection numbers as the derivative of Zagier's Eisenstein series of weight 3/2.…
Motivated by string theory scattering amplitudes that are invariant under a discrete U-duality, we study Fourier coefficients of Eisenstein series on Kac-Moody groups. In particular, we analyse the Eisenstein series on $E_9(R)$, $E_{10}(R)$ and $E_{11}(R)$ corresponding to certain degenerate principal series at the values s=3/2 and s=5/2 that were studied in 1204.3043. We show that these Eisenstein series have very simple Fourier coefficients as expected for their role as supersymmetric contributions to the higher derivative couplings $R^4$ and $\partial^{4} R^4$ coming from 1/2-BPS and 1/4-BP…
The space of toroidal automorphic forms was introduced by Zagier in 1979. Let $F$ be a global field. An automorphic form on $\GL(2)$ is toroidal if it has vanishing constant Fourier coefficients along all embedded non-split tori. The interest in this space stems from the fact (amongst others) that an Eisenstein series of weight $s$ is toroidal if $s$ is a non-trivial zero of the zeta function, and thus a connection with the Riemann hypothesis is established. In this paper, we concentrate on the function field case. We show the following results. The $(n-1)$-th derivative of a non-trivial Eisen…
We prove a variety of quantum unique ergodicity results for Eisenstein series in the level aspect. A new feature of this variant of QUE is that the main term involves the logarithmic derivative of a Dirichlet $L$-function on the $1$-line. A zero of this $L$-function near the $1$-line can thus have a distorting effect on the main term. We obtain quantitative control on the test function and thereby prove an asymptotic formula in the level aspect version of the problem with test functions of shrinking support. Surprisingly, this asymptotic formula shows some obstruction to equidistribution that …
In this paper, we study common zeros of the iterated derivatives of the Eisenstein series for $Γ_0^+(N)$ of level $N=1,2$ and $3$, which are quasi-modular forms. More precisely, we investigate the common zeros of quasi-modular forms, and prove that all the zeros of the iterated derivatives of the Eisenstein series $\frac{d^m E_k^{(N)}(τ)}{dτ^m}$ of weight $k=2,4,6$ for $Γ_0^+(N)$ of level $N=2,3$ are simple by generalizaing the results of Meher \cite{MEH} and Gun and Oesterlé \cite{SJ20} for SL$_2(\mathbb{Z})$.
Around 2000 Kudla presented conjectures about deep relations between arithmetic intersection theory, Eisenstein series and their derivatives, and special values of Rankin $L-$series. The aim of this text is to work out the details of an old unpublished draft on the second author's attempt to prove these conjectures for the case of the product of two modular curves. In part one we proved that the generating series of certain modified arithmetic special cycles is as predicted by Kudla's conjectures a modular form with values in the first arithmetic Chow group. Here we pair this generating series…
We study the Faltings height pairing of arithmetic Heegner divisors and CM cycles on Shimura varieties associated to orthogonal groups. We compute the Archimedian contribution to the height pairing and derive a conjecture relating the total pairing to the central derivative of a Rankin L-function. We prove the conjecture in certain cases where the Shimura variety has dimension 0, 1, or 2. In particular, we obtain a new proof of the Gross-Zagier formula.
In the theory of elliptic functions and elliptic curves, the Weierstrass $zeta$ function (which is essentially an antiderivative of the Weierstrass $\wp$ function) plays a prominent role. Although it is not an elliptic function, Eisenstein constructed a simple (non-holomorphic) completion of this form which is doubly periodic. This theorem has begun to play an important role in the theory of harmonic Maass forms, and was crucial to work of Guerzhoy as well as Alfes, Griffin, Ono, and the author. In particular, this simple completion of $ζ$ provides a powerful method to construct harmonic Maass…
We introduce moduli spaces of abelian varieties which are arithmetic models of Shimura varieties attached to unitary groups of signature (n-1, 1). We define arithmetic cycles on these models and study their intersection behaviour. In particular, in the non-degenerate case, we prove a relation between their intersection numbers and Fourier coefficients of the derivative at s=0 of a certain incoherent Eisenstein series for the group U(n, n). This is done by relating the arithmetic cycles to their formal counterpart from Part I via non-archimedean uniformization, and by relating the Fourier coeff…
In this paper we prove a Gross-Zagier type formula for the anticyclotomic p-adic L-function of an elliptic modular form f of higher weight and of multiplicative type at p. For such f we also decribe explicitely the local Galois representation attached to it at p and compare the Fontaine-Mazur and Teitelbaum L-invariants.
We prove the local Kudla--Rapoport conjecture, which is a precise identity between the arithmetic intersection numbers of special cycles on unitary Rapoport--Zink spaces and the derivatives of local representation densities of hermitian forms. As a first application, we prove the global Kudla--Rapoport conjecture, which relates the arithmetic intersection numbers of special cycles on unitary Shimura varieties and the central derivatives of the Fourier coefficients of incoherent Eisenstein series. Combining previous results of Liu and Garcia--Sankaran, we also prove cases of the arithmetic Sieg…
Scattering amplitudes of superstring theory are strongly constrained by the requirement that they be invariant under dualities generated by discrete subgroups, E_n(Z), of simply-laced Lie groups in the E_n series (n<= 8). In particular, expanding the four-supergraviton amplitude at low energy gives a series of higher derivative corrections to Einstein's theory, with coefficients that are automorphic functions with a rich dependence on the moduli. Boundary conditions supplied by string and supergravity perturbation theory, together with a chain of relations between successive groups in the E_n …
In recent years, a number of papers have been devoted to the study of roots of period polynomials of modular forms. Here, we study cohomological analogues of the Eichler-Shimura period polynomials corresponding to higher $L$-derivatives. We state general conjectures about the locations of the roots of the full and odd parts of the polynomials, in analogy with the existing literature on period polynomials, and we also give numerical evidence that similar results hold for our higher derivative "period polynomials" in the case of cusp forms. We prove a special case of this conjecture in the case …
When the branch character has root number -1, the corresponding anticyclotomic Katz p-adic L-function identically vanishes. In this case, we study the $μ$-invariant of the cyclotomic derivative of Katz p-adic L-function. As an application, this proves the non-vanishing of the anticyclotomic regulator of a self-dual CM modular form with the root number -1. The result also plays a crucial role in the recent work of Hsieh on the Eisenstein ideal approach to a one-sided divisibility of the CM main conjecture.
The temperature inversion properties of the internal energy, E, on odd spheres, and its derivatives, together with their expression in elliptic terms, as expounded in previous papers, are extended to the integrals of E, thence making contact with the theory of modular forms with rational period functions. I point out that the period functions of (holomorphic) Eisenstein series computed by Zagier were already available since the time of Ramanujan and I give a rederivation by contour integration. Removing both the Planck and Casimir terms gives a fully subtracted form of the series which allows …
We form a generating series of regularized volumes of intersections of special cycles on a non-compact unitary Shimura variety with a fixed base change cycle. We show that it is a Hilbert modular form by identifying it with a theta integral, which we show converges even though the parameters lie outside the classical convergence range of Weil. By applying the regularized Siegel-Weil formulas of Ichino and Gan-Qiu-Takeda, we show the modular form is the restriction of a hermitian modular form of degree n related to Siegel Eisenstein series on U(n,n). An essential fact used is a computation show…
For a totally real field F of degree d>1 and a quadratic space V of signature (m,2)^{d_+} x (m+2,0)^{d-d_+} with associated Shimura variety Sh(V), we consider the subring of cohomology generated by the classes of weighted special cycles. We assume that d_+<d. We take the quotient SC(V) of this ring by the radical of the restriction of the intersection pairing to it. We show that the inner products of classes in SC(V) are determined by Fourier coefficients of pullbacks of Hilbert-Siegel Eisenstein series of genus m to products of smaller Siegel spaces and that the products of classes in SC(V) a…
The rank one Gross conjecture for Deligne-Ribet $p$-adic $L$-functions was solved in works of Darmon-Dasgupta-Pollack and Ventullo by the Eisenstein congruence among Hilbert modular forms. The purpose of this paper is to prove an analogue of the Gross conjecture for the Katz $p$-adic $L$-functions attached to imaginary quadratic fields via the congruences between CM forms and non-CM forms. The new ingredient is to apply the $p$-adic Rankin-Selberg method to construct a non-CM Hida family which is congruent to a Hida family of CM forms at the $1+\varepsilon$ specialization.
We extend the work of S. Zhang and Yuan-Zhang-Zhang to obtain a Gross-Zagier formula for modular forms of even weight in terms of an arithmetic intersection pairing of CM-cycles on Kuga-Sato varieties over Shimura curves. Combined with a result of the first author and de Vera-Piquero adapting Kolyvagin's method of Euler systems to this setting, we bound the associated Selmer and Tate-Shafarevich groups, assuming the non-vanishing of the derivative of the L-function at the central point.
