For a totally real field F of degree d>1 and a quadratic space V of signature (m,2)^{d_+} x (m+2,0)^{d-d_+} with associated Shimura variety Sh(V), we consider the subring of cohomology generated by the classes of weighted special cycles. We assume that d_+<d. We take the quotient SC(V) of this ring by the radical of the restriction of the intersection pairing to it. We show that the inner products of classes in SC(V) are determined by Fourier coefficients of pullbacks of Hilbert-Siegel Eisenstein series of genus m to products of smaller Siegel spaces and that the products of classes in SC(V) are determined by Fourier coefficients of pullbacks to triple products of smaller Siegel spaces. As a consequence, we show that, for quadratic spaces V and V' over F that are isomorphic at all finite places, but with no restriction on d_+(V) and d_+(V') other than the necessary condition that they have the same parity, the special cycles rings SC(V) and SC(V') are isometrically isomorphic. This is a consequence of the Siegel-Weil formula and the matching principle. Finally, we give a combinatorial construction of a ring SC(V_+) associated to a totally positive definite quadratic space V_+ of dimension m+2 over F and show that the comparison isomorphism extends to this case.
$\newcommand{\OO}[1]{\mathcal{O}_{#1}}\newcommand{\GG}{\mathcal{G}}\newcommand{\End}{\mathrm{End}}\newcommandØ{\mathcal{O}}$Let $K/F$ be a quadratic extension of non-Archimedean local fields of characteristic not equal to 2, with rings of integers denoted by $\OO K$ and $\OO F$. We consider a formal $\OO F$-module $\GG$, over a discrete valuation ring $\OO W$ with an uniformizer $\varpi$, with extra endomorphisms by a subring $Ø$ of $\OO K$, and the height of its reduction $\GG_0=\GG\otimes \OO W/\varpi$ is 2. The endomorphism ring of $\GG_n=\GG\otimes \OO W/\varpi^{n+1}$ is a subring between …
In this paper, we study the reduced loci of special cycles on local models of the Shimura variety for GU(1; n-1). We explicitly compute the global structure of the reduced locus of a single special cycle, as well as of an arbitrary intersection of special cycles, in terms of Bruhat-Tits theory. Furthermore, as an application of our results, we prove the connectedness of arbitrary intersections of special cycles, as conjectured by Kudla and Rapoport.
We introduce the notion of dR-absolutely special subvarieties in motivic variations of Hodge structure as special subvarieties cut out by (de Rham-)absolute Hodge cycles and conjecture that all special subvarieties are dR-absolutely special. This is implied by Deligne's conjecture that all Hodge cycles are absolute Hodge cycles, but is a much weaker conjecture. We prove our conjecture for subvarieties satisfying a simple monodromy condition introduced by Klingler-Otwinowska-Urbanik. We study applications to typical respectively atypical intersections and $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$-bialgebraic subvarie…
We show that the span of special cycles in the $r$th Chow group of a Shimura variety of orthogonal type is finite dimensional, if $r < 5$. As our main tool, we develop the theory of Jacobi forms with rational index $M \in \Mat{N}(\QQ)$.
We prove that formal Fourier Jacobi expansions of degree 2 are Siegel modular forms. As a corollary, we deduce modularity of the generating function of special cycles of codimension 2, which were defined by Kudla. A second application is the proof of termination of an algorithm to compute Fourier expansions of arbitrary Siegel modular forms of degree 2. Combining both results enables us to compute relations of special cycles in the second Chow group.
We determine the behavior of automorphic Green functions along the boundary components of toroidal compactifications of orthogonal Shimura varieties. We use this analysis to define boundary components of special divisors and prove that the generating series of the resulting special divisors on a toroidal compactification is modular.
In this paper we give a different proof of a theorem of Paul Breutmann: for a Bruhat-Tits group scheme $\mathcal{H}$ over a smooth projective curve $X$ and a closed embedding into another smooth affine group scheme $\mathcal{G}$, the induced map on the moduli of Shtukas $Sht^{r}_{\mathcal{H}}\to Sht^{r}_{\mathcal{G}}$ is schematic, finite and unramified. This result enables one to define special cycles on the moduli stack of Shtukas.
In this note, we consider special algebraic cycles on the Shimura variety S associated to a quadratic space V over a totally real field F, |F:\Q|=d, of signature ((m,2)^{d_+},(m+2,0)^{d-d_+}), 1\le d_+<d. For each n, 1\le n\le m, there are special cycles Z(T) in S, of codimension nd_+, indexed by totally positive semi-definite matrices with coefficients in the ring of integers O_F. The generating series for the classes of these cycles in the cohomology group H^{2nd_+}(S) are Hilbert-Siegel modular forms of parallel weight m/2+1. One can form analogous generating series for the classes of the s…
Let V be a rational quadratic space of signature (m,2). A conjecture of Kudla relates the arithmetic degrees of top degree special cycles on an integral model of a Shimura variety associated with SO(V) to the coefficients of the central derivative of an incoherent Siegel Eisenstein series of genus m+1. We prove this conjecture for the coefficients of non-singular index T when T is not positive definite. We also prove it when T is positive definite and the corresponding special cycle has dimension 0. To obtain these results, we establish new local arithmetic Siegel-Weil formulas at the archimed…
In this paper, we reformulate conjectural formulas for the arithmetic intersection numbers of special cycles on unitary Shimura varieties with minuscule parahoric level structure in terms of weighted counting of lattices containing special homomorphisms.
We describe the application of the results of Kudla-Millson on the modularity of generating series for cohomology classes of special cycles to the case of lattice polarized K3 surfaces. In this case, the special cycles can be interpreted as higher Noether-Lefschetz loci. These generating series can be paired with the cohomology classes of complete subvarieties of the moduli space to give classical Siegel modular forms with higher Noether-Lefschetz numbers as Fourier coefficients. Examples of such complete families associated to quadratic spaces over totally real number fields are constructed. …
In this paper, we study the basic locus in the fiber at $p$ of a certain unitary Shimura variety with a certain parahoric level structure. The basic locus $\widehat{\mathcal{M}^{ss}}$ is uniformized by a formal scheme $\mathcal{N}$ which is called Rapoport-Zink space. We show that the irreducible components of the induced reduced subscheme $\mathcal{N}_{red}$ of $\mathcal{N}$ are Deligne-Lusztig varieties and their intersection behavior is controlled by a certain Bruhat-Tits building. Also, we define special cycles in $\mathcal{N}$ and study their intersection multiplicities.
In this paper, we formulate conjectural formulas for the arithmetic intersection numbers of special cycles on unitary Shimura varieties with minuscule parahoric level structure. Also, we prove that these conjectures are compatible with all known results.
In this paper, we prove that there are certain relations among representation densities and provide an efficient way to compute representation densities by using these relations. As an application, we compute some arithmetic intersection numbers of special cycles on unitary Shimura varieties and propose a conjecture on these.
Let $X$ be an orthogonal Shimura variety associated to a unimodular lattice. We investigate the polyhedrality of the cone $\mathcal{C}_X$ of special cycles of codimension 2 on $X$. We show that the rays generated by such cycles accumulate towards infinitely many rays, the latter generating a non-trivial cone. We also prove that such an accumulation cone is polyhedral. The proof relies on analogous properties satisfied by the cones of Fourier coefficients of Siegel modular forms. We show that the accumulation rays of $\mathcal{C}_X$ are generated by combinations of Heegner divisors intersected …
We introduce moduli spaces of abelian varieties which are arithmetic models of Shimura varieties attached to unitary groups of signature (n-1, 1). We define arithmetic cycles on these models and study their intersection behaviour. In particular, in the non-degenerate case, we prove a relation between their intersection numbers and Fourier coefficients of the derivative at s=0 of a certain incoherent Eisenstein series for the group U(n, n). This is done by relating the arithmetic cycles to their formal counterpart from Part I via non-archimedean uniformization, and by relating the Fourier coeff…
We study special cycles on a Shimura variety of orthogonal type over a totally real field of degree $d$ associated with a quadratic form in $n+2$ variables whose signature is $(n,2)$ at $e$ real places and $(n+2,0)$ at the remaining $d-e$ real places for $1\leq e <d$. Recently, these cycles were constructed by Kudla and Rosu-Yott and they proved that the generating series of special cycles in the cohomology group is a Hilbert-Siegel modular form of half integral weight. We prove that, assuming the Beilinson-Bloch conjecture on the injectivity of the higher Abel-Jacobi map, the generating serie…
The supersingular locus in the fiber at p of a Shimura variety attached to a unitary similitude group GU(1,n-1) over Q is uniformized by a formal scheme \Cal N. In the case when p is inert, we define special cycles Z(x) in \Cal N, associated to a collection x of m `special homomorphisms' with fundamental matrix T in Herm_m(OK). When m=n and T is nonsingular, we show that the cycle Z(x) is a union of components of the Ekedahl-Oort stratification, and we give a necessary and sufficient conditions, in terms of T, for Z(x) to be irreducible. When Z(x) is zero dimensional -- in which case it reduce…
In this paper, we investigate a general method to establish tame and norm relations for special cycles in Shimura varieties, using unitary cycles in odd orthogonal Shimura varieties as a guiding example.
We describe the complex multiplication (CM) values of modular functions for $Γ_0(N)$ whose divisor is given by a linear combination of Heegner divisors in terms of special cycles on the stack of CM elliptic curves. In particular, our results apply to Borcherds products of weight $0$ for $Γ_0(N)$. By working out explicit formulas for the special cycles, we obtain the prime ideal factorizations of such CM values.
We generalize the definition of CM cycles beyond the small and big CM ones studied by various authors and give a uniform formula for the CM values of Green functions associated to these special cycles in general using the idea of regularized theta lifts. Finally, as an application to Siegel 3-fold $X_2(2)$, we can compute special values of theta functions and Rosenhain $λ$-invariants at a CM cycle, which is useful for genus two curve cryptography.
This article sketches relations among algebraic cycles for the Shimura varieties defined by arithmetic quotients of symmetric domains for O(n,2), theta functions, values and derivatives of Eisenstein series and values and derivatives of certain L-functions. In the geometric case, results of joint work with John Millson imply that the generating functions for the classes in cohomology of certain algebraic cycles of codimension r are Siegel modular forms of genus r and weight n/2+1. A result of Borcherds shows that, for r=1, the same is true for the generating function for the classes of such di…
We compute relations of rational equivalence among special codimensional two cycles on families of abelian surfaces using elements of higher chow groups.
We consider cycles on a 3-dimensional Shimura varieties attached to a unitary group, defined over extensions of a CM field $E$, which appear in the context of the conjectures of Gan, Gross, and Prasad \cite{gan-gross-prasad}. We establish a vertical distribution relation for these cycles over an anticyclotomic extension of $E$, complementing the horizontal distribution relation of \cite{jetchev:unitary}, and use this to define a family of norm-compatible cycles over these fields, thus obtaining a universal norm construction similar to the Heegner $Λ$-module constructed from Heegner points.
We study the local behavior of special cycles on Shimura varieties for $\mathbf{U}(2, 1) \times \mathbf{U}(1, 1)$ in the setting of the Gan-Gross-Prasad conjectures at primes $τ$ of the totally real field of definition of the unitary spaces which are split in the corresponding totally imaginary quadratic extension. We establish a local formula for their fields of definition, and prove a distribution relation between the Galois and Hecke actions on them. This complements work of \cite{jetchev:unitary} at inert primes, where the combinatorics of the formulas are reduced to calculations on the Br…
We study generalized special cycles on Hermitian locally symmetric spaces $Γ\backslash D$ associated to the groups $G=\mathrm{U}(p,q)$, $\mathrm{Sp}(2n,\mathbb{R}) $ and $\mathrm{O}^*(2n)$. These cycles are (covered by) locally symmetric spaces associated to subgroups of $G$ which are of the same type. Using oscillator representation and a construction which essentially comes from the thesis of Greg Anderson, we show that Poincaré duals of these generalized special cycles can be viewed as Fourier coefficients of a theta series. This gives new cases of theta lifts from the cohomology of Hermtia…
We define and study a collection of special cycles on certain non-PEL Shimura varieties for $U(2,1) \times U(1,1)$ that appear naturally in the context of the recent conjectures of Gan, Gross and Prasad on restrictions of automorphic forms for unitary groups and conjectural generalizations of the Gross--Zagier formula. We prove a combinatorial formula expressing the Galois action in terms of the distance function on the Bruhat--Tits buildings for these groups. In addition, we calculate explicitly the Hecke polynomial appearing in the congruence relation conjectured by Blasius and Rogawski. Usi…
We form a generating series of regularized volumes of intersections of special cycles on a non-compact unitary Shimura variety with a fixed base change cycle. We show that it is a Hilbert modular form by identifying it with a theta integral, which we show converges even though the parameters lie outside the classical convergence range of Weil. By applying the regularized Siegel-Weil formulas of Ichino and Gan-Qiu-Takeda, we show the modular form is the restriction of a hermitian modular form of degree n related to Siegel Eisenstein series on U(n,n). An essential fact used is a computation show…
This is a report for the author's talk in ICM-2018. Motivated by the formulas of Gross--Zagier and Waldspurger, we review conjectures and theorems on automorphic period integrals, special cycles on Shimura varieties, and their connection to central values of L-functions and their derivatives. We focus on the global Gan--Gross--Prasad conjectures, their arithmetic versions and some variants in the author's joint work with Rapoport and Smithling. We discuss the approach of relative trace formulas and the arithmetic fundamental lemma conjecture. In the function field setting, Z. Yun and the autho…
We construct natural Green forms for special cycles in orthogonal and unitary Shimura varieties, in all codimensions, and, for compact Shimura varieties of type O(p,2) and U(p,1), we show that the resulting local archimedean height pairings are related to special values of derivatives of Siegel Eisentein series. A conjecture put forward by Kudla relates these derivatives to arithmetic intersections of special cycles, and our results settle the part of his conjecture involving local archimedean heights.
We study the intersections of special cycles on a unitary Shimura variety of signature (n-1,1), and show that the intersection multiplicities of these cycles agree with Fourier coefficients of Eisenstein series. The results are new cases of conjectures of Kudla, and suggest a Gross-Zagier theorem for unitary Shimura varieties.
