We prove a relation between a generating series for the heights of Heegner cycles on the arithmetic surface associated to a Shimura curve and the second term in the Laurent expansion at s=1/2 of an Eisenstein series of weight 3/2 for SL(2). On the geometric side, a typical coefficient of the generating series involves the Faltings heights of abelian surfaces isogenous to a product of CM elliptic curves, an archimedean contribution, and contributions from vertical components in the fibers of bad reduction. On the analytic side, these terms arise via the derivatives of local Whittaker functions. It should be noted that s=1/2 is not the central point for the functional equation of the Eisenstein series in question. Moreover, the first term of the Laurent expansion at s=1/2 coincides with the generating function for the degrees of the Heegner cycles on the generic fiber, and, in particular, does not vanish.
In this work we prove a new Northcott property for the Faltings height. Namely we show, assuming the Colmez Conjecture and the Artin Conjecture, that there are finitely many CM abelian varieties over the complex numbers of a fixed dimension which have bounded Faltings height. The technique developed uses new tools from integral p-adic Hodge theory to study the variation of Faltings height within an isogeny class of CM abelian varieties. In special cases, we are moreover able to use the technique to develop new Colmez-type formulas for the Faltings height.
We give an asymptotic formula for the number of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ with bounded Faltings height. Silverman has shown that the Faltings height for elliptic curves over number fields can be expressed in terms of modular functions and the minimal discriminant of the elliptic curve. We use this to recast the problem as one of counting lattice points in a particular region in $\mathbb{R}^2$.
We prove a formula, which, given a principally polarized abelian variety $(A,λ)$ over the field of algebraic numbers, relates the stable Faltings height of $A$ with the Néron--Tate height of a symmetric theta divisor on $A$. Our formula completes earlier results due to Bost, Hindry, Autissier and Wagener. The local non-archimedean terms in our formula can be expressed as the tropical moments of the tropicalizations of $(A,λ)$.
We study the Faltings height pairing of arithmetic Heegner divisors and CM cycles on Shimura varieties associated to orthogonal groups. We compute the Archimedian contribution to the height pairing and derive a conjecture relating the total pairing to the central derivative of a Rankin L-function. We prove the conjecture in certain cases where the Shimura variety has dimension 0, 1, or 2. In particular, we obtain a new proof of the Gross-Zagier formula.
We give a formula for the values of automorphic Green functions on the special rational 0-cycles (big CM points) attached to certain maximal tori in the Shimura varieties associated to rational quadratic spaces of signature (2d,2). Our approach depends on the fact that the Green functions in question are constructed as regularized theta lifts of harmonic weak Mass forms, and it involves the Siegel-Weil formula and the central derivatives of incoherent Eisenstein series for totally real fields. In the case of a weakly holomorphic form, the formula is an explicit combination of quantities obtain…
We show that the minimum $h_{\text{min}}$ of the stable Faltings height on elliptic curves found by Deligne is followed by a gap. This means that there is a constant $C >0$ such that for every elliptic curve $E/K$ with everywhere semistable reduction over a number field $K$, we either have $h(E/K)=h_{\text{min}}$ or $h(E/K)\geq h_{\text{min}} +C$. We determine such an absolute constant explicitly. On the contrary, we show that there is no such gap for elliptic curves with unstable reduction.
We extend the Faltings modular heights of abelian varieties to general arithmetic varieties and show direct relations with the Kahler-Einstein geometry, the Minimal Model Program, heights of Bost and Zhang, and give some applications. Along the way, we propose arithmetic Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture, an equivalence of a purely arithmetic property of variety and its metrical property, and partially confirm it.
We study the essential minimum of the (stable) Faltings height on the moduli space of elliptic curves. We prove that, in contrast to the Weil height on a projective space and the N{é}ron-Tate height of an abelian variety, Faltings' height takes at least two values that are smaller than its essential minimum. We also provide upper and lower bounds for this quantity that allow us to compute it up to five decimal places. In addition, we give numerical evidence that there are at least four isolated values before the essential minimum. One of the main ingredients in our analysis is a good approxima…
Using original ideas from J.-B. Bost and S. David, we provide an explicit comparison between the Theta height and the stable Faltings height of a principally polarized abelian variety. We also give as an application an explicit upper bound on the number of K-rational points of a curve of genus g>1 over a number filed K under a conjecture of S. Lang and J. Silverman. We complete the study with a comparison between differential lattice structures.
We study heights of motives with integral coefficients over number fields introduced by Kato. It is a generalization of the Faltings height of an abelian variety and we establish generalizations of some properties of the Faltings height in our context as conjectured by Kato. This sheds some light on integral structures of motives.
Let M be the Shimura variety associated with the group of spinor similitudes of a rational quadratic space over of signature (n,2). We prove a conjecture of Bruinier-Kudla-Yang, relating the arithmetic intersection multiplicities of special divisors and big CM points on M to the central derivatives of certain $L$-functions. As an application of this result, we prove an averaged version of Colmez's conjecture on the Faltings heights of CM abelian varieties.
We prove that assuming the Colmez conjecture and the ``no Siegel zeros" conjecture, the stable Faltings height of a CM abelian variety over a number field is less than or equal to the logarithm of the root discriminant of the field of definition of the abelian variety times an effective constant depending only on the dimension of the abelian variety. In view of the fact that the Colmez conjecture for abelian CM fields, the averaged Colmez conjecture, and the ``no Siegel zeros" conjecture for CM fields with no complex quadratic subfields are already proved, we prove unconditional analogues of t…
In this paper, we prove an explicit arithmetic intersection formula between arithmetic Hirzebruch-Zagier divisors and arithmetic CM cycles in a Hilbert modular surface over $\mathbb Z$. As applications, we obtain the first `non-abelian' Chowla-Selberg formula, which is a special case of Colmez's conjecture; an explicit arithmetic intersection formula between arithmetic Humbert surfaces and CM cycles in the arithmetic Siegel modular variety of genus two; Lauter's conjecture about the denominators of CM values of Igusa invariants; and a result about bad reductions of CM genus two curves.
We obtain a more precise version of an asymptotic formula of A. Dubickas for the number of monic Eisenstein polynomials of fixed degree $d$ and of height at most $H$, as $H\to \infty$. In particular, we give an explicit bound for the error term. We also obtain an asymptotic formula for arbitrary Eisenstein polynomials of height at most $H$.
In this note, we show how the classical Hodge index theorem implies the Hodge index conjecture of Beilinson for height pairing of homologically trivial codimension two cycles over function field of characteristic 0. Such an index conjecture has been used in our paper on Gross-Schoen cycles to deduce the Bogomolov conjecture and a lower bound for Hodge class (or Faltings height) from some conjectures about metrized graphs which have just been recently proved by Zubeyir Cinkir.
We explicitly bound the Faltings height of a curve over Q polynomially in its Belyi degree. Similar bounds are proven for three other Arakelov invariants: the discriminant, Faltings' delta invariant and the self-intersection of the dualizing sheaf. Our results allow us to explicitly bound Arakelov invariants of modular curves, Hurwitz curves and Fermat curves in terms of their genus. Moreover, as an application, we show that the Couveignes-Edixhoven-Bruin algorithm to compute coefficients of modular forms for congruence subgroups of SL2(Z) runs in polynomial time under the Riemann hypothesis f…
Previously Heyman and Shparlinski gave an asymptotic formula with error term for the number of Eisenstein polynomials of fixed degree and bounded height. Let $ψ(f)$ denote the number of primes for which a polynomial $f$ is Eisenstein. We give expressions for the mean and variance of the function $ψ$ for each fixed degree, where the polynomials are ordered according to their height.
For several applications in the arithmetic of abelian varieties it is important to compute canonical heights. Following Faltings and Hriljac, we show how the canonical height on the Jacobian of a smooth projective curve can be computed using arithmetic intersection theory on a regular model of the curve in practice. In the case of hyperelliptic curves we present a complete algorithm that has been implemented in Magma. Several examples are computed and the behavior of the running time is discussed.
This article sketches relations among algebraic cycles for the Shimura varieties defined by arithmetic quotients of symmetric domains for O(n,2), theta functions, values and derivatives of Eisenstein series and values and derivatives of certain L-functions. In the geometric case, results of joint work with John Millson imply that the generating functions for the classes in cohomology of certain algebraic cycles of codimension r are Siegel modular forms of genus r and weight n/2+1. A result of Borcherds shows that, for r=1, the same is true for the generating function for the classes of such di…
Around 2000 Kudla presented conjectures about deep relations between arithmetic intersection theory, Eisenstein series and their derivatives, and special values of Rankin $L-$series. The aim of this text is to work out the details of an old unpublished draft on the second author's attempt to prove these conjectures for the case of the product of two modular curves. In part one we proved that the generating series of certain modified arithmetic special cycles is as predicted by Kudla's conjectures a modular form with values in the first arithmetic Chow group. Here we pair this generating series…

Let A be the jacobian variety of a hyperelliptic curve defined over a number field k. We provide a decomposition formula for the Faltings height of A and for the Néron-Tate height of k-rational points on A. We formulate a question of Bogomolov type on the space of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension g.
We develop a method to calculate the Néron-Tate height of tautological integral cycles on jacobians of curves defined over number fields. As examples we obtain closed expressions for the Néron-Tate height of the difference surface, the Abel-Jacobi images of the square of the curve, and of any symmetric theta divisor. As applications we obtain a new effective positive lower bound for the essential minimum of any Abel-Jacobi image of the curve and a proof, in the case of jacobians, of a formula proposed by Autissier relating the Faltings height of a principally polarized abelian variety with the…
It was shown by Faltings and Hriljac that the Néron-Tate height of a point on the Jacobian of a curve can be expressed as the self-intersection of a corresponding divisor on a regular model of the curve. We make this explicit and use it to give an algorithm for computing Néron-Tate heights on Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves. To demonstrate the practicality of our algorithm, we illustrate it by computing Néron-Tate heights on Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves of genus from 1 to 9.
The Colmez conjecture, proposed by Colmez, is a conjecture expressing the Faltings height of a CM abelian variety in terms of some linear combination of logarithmic derivatives of Artin L-functions. The aim of this paper to prove an averaged version of the conjecture.
We prove two formulas in the style of the Gross-Zagier theorem, relating derivatives of L-functions to arithmetic intersection pairings on a unitary Shimura variety. We also prove a special case of Colmez's conjecture on the Faltings heights of abelian varieties with complex multiplication. These results are derived from the authors' earlier results on the modularity of generating series of divisors on unitary Shimura varieties.
The Colmez conjecture relates the Faltings height of an abelian variety with complex multiplication by the ring of integers of a CM field $E$ to logarithmic derivatives of certain Artin $L$--functions at $s=0$. In this paper, we prove that if $F$ is any fixed totally real number field of degree $[F:\mathbb{Q}] \geq 3$, then there are infinitely many CM extensions $E/F$ such that $E/\mathbb{Q}$ is $\textit{non-abelian}$ and the Colmez conjecture is true for $E$. Moreover, these CM extensions are explicitly constructed to be ramified at "arbitrary" prescribed sets of prime ideals of $F$. We also…
We prove that, when genus two curves $C/\mathbb{Q}$ with a marked Weierstass point are ordered by height, the average number of rational points $\#|C(\mathbb{Q})|$ is bounded. The argument follows the same ideas as the sphere-packing proof of boundedness of the average number of integral points on (quasiminimal Weierstrass models of) elliptic curves. That is, we bound the number of small-height points by hand, the number of medium-height points by establishing an explicit Mumford gap principle and using the theorem of Kabatiansky-Levenshtein on spherical codes (this technique goes back to work…
We prove an effective upper bound on the number of effective sections of a hermitian line bundle over an arithmetic surface. It is an effective version of the arithmetic Hilbert--Samuel formula in the nef case. As a consequence, we obtain effective lower bounds on the Faltings height and on the self-intersection of the canonical bundle in terms of the number of singular points on fibers of the arithmetic surface.
We show that a genus $2$ curve over a number field whose jacobian has complex multiplication will usually have stable bad reduction at some prime. We prove this by computing the Faltings height of the jacobian in two different ways. First, we use a formula by Colmez and Obus specific to the CM case and valid when the CM field is an abelian extension of the rationals. This formula links the height and the logarithmic derivatives of an $L$-function. The second formula involves a decomposition of the height into local terms based on a hyperelliptic model. We use results of Igusa, Liu, and Saito t…
We apply the theory of Borcherds products to calculate arithmetic volumes (heights) of Shimura varieties of orthogonal type up to contributions from very bad primes. The approach is analogous to the well-known computation of their geometric volume by induction, using special cycles. A functorial theory of integral models of toroidal compactifications of those varieties and a theory of arithmetic Chern classes of integral automorphic vector bundles with singular metrics are used. We obtain some evidence in the direction of Kudla's conjectures on relations of heights of special cycles on these v…
The relation between Eisenstein series and the $J$-homomorphism is an important topic in chromatic homotopy theory at height $1$. Both sides are related to the special values of the Riemann $ζ$-function. Number theorists have studied the twistings of the Riemann $ζ$-functions and Eisenstein series by Dirichlet characters. Motivated by the Dirichlet equivariance of these Eisenstein series, we introduce the Dirichlet $J$-spectra in this paper. The homotopy groups of the Dirichlet $J$-spectra are related to the special values of the Dirichlet $L$-functions. Moreover, we find Brown-Comenetz duals …
