This work considers a chemotaxis system for multi-species that includes birth or death rate terms, which implies no mass preservation of the populations. We aim to show the convergence to a $L^{\infty}\ -\ $weak solutions, that is local in time, of the JKO - scheme arising from the Optimal Transport Theory, in the spirit of [35,14]. Currently, $L^{\infty}$ solutions have shown to be important in order to get uniqueness. Since death rate case does not ensure global solutions, for arbitrary initial data, in this framework, it could be interest to analyze the Blowing-up phenomenon of this system. Therefore, in the last section, we get sufficient conditions that implies blowing-up phenomenon in finite time and we draw several stages where this occurs. This last part can be seen as a partial generalization of the blowing-up results in [16].
We consider the simplest parabolic-elliptic model of chemotaxis in the whole space in several dimensions. Criteria for the blowup of radially symmetric solutions in terms of suitable Morrey spaces norms are derived.
In this paper we study a two-dimensional chemotaxis-consumption system with singular sensitivity and endowed with Neumann boundary conditions. Sufficient conditions on the data of the problem are given so that the globability of classical solutions is shown, thus excluding any finite-time blow-up scenario.
A simple proof of concentration of mass equal to $8π$ for blowing up $N$-symmetric solutions of the Keller--Segel model of chemotaxis in two dimensions with large $N$ is given. Moreover, a criterion for blowup of solutions in terms of the radial initial concentrations, related to suitable Morrey spaces norms, is derived for radial solutions of chemotaxis in several dimensions. This condition is, in a sense, complementary to the one guaranteeing the global-in-time existence of solutions.
Finite time blow-up is shown to occur for solutions to a one-dimensional quasilinear parabolic-parabolic chemotaxis system as soon as the mean value of the initial condition exceeds some threshold value. The proof combines a novel identity of virial type with the boundedness from below of the Liapunov functional associated to the system, the latter being peculiar to the one-dimensional setting.
It is well-known that the Neumann initial-boundary value problem for the minimal-chemotaxis-logistic system in a 2D bounded smooth domain has no blow-up for any choice of parameters. Here, for a large class of kinetic terms including sub-logistic sources, we show that the corresponding 2D Neumann initial-boundary value problems do not possess any blow-up. This illustrates a new phenomenon that even a class of sub-logistic sources can prevent blow-up for the 2D problem, indicating that logistic damping is not the weakest damping to guarantee uniform-in-time boundedness for the 2D minimal Keller…
In this work, we rigorously study chemotaxis effect versus haptotaxis effect on boundedness, blow-up and asymptotical behavior of solutions for a combined chemotaxis-haptotaxis model in 2D settings. It is well-known that the corresponding Keller-Segel chemotaxis-only model possesses a striking feature of critical mass blow-up phenomenon, namely, subcritical mass ensures boundedness, whereas, supercritical mass induces the existence of blow-ups. Herein, we show that this critical mass blow-up phenomenon stays almost the same in the full chemotaxis-haptotaxis model. For negligibility of haptotax…
We prove L^$\infty$ estimates on the densities that are obtained via the JKO scheme for a general form of a parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel type system, with arbitrary diffusion, arbitrary mass, and in arbitrary dimension. Of course, such an estimate blows up in finite time, a time proportional to the inverse of the initial L^$\infty$ norm. This estimate can be used to prove short-time well-posedness for a number of equations of this form regardless of the mass of the initial data. The time of existence of the constructed solutions coincides with the maximal time of existence of Lagrangian sol…
We show that the attraction-repulsion chemotaxis system \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} u_t = Δu - χ\nabla\cdot(u\nabla v_1) + ξ\nabla\cdot(u\nabla v_2)\\ \partial_t v_1 = Δv_1 - βv_1 + αu \\ \partial_t v_2 = Δv_2 - δv_2 + γu, \end{cases} \end{equation*} posed with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions in bounded domains $Ω=B_R \subset \mathbb{R}^3$, $R>0$, admits radially symmetric solutions which blow-up in finite time if it is attraction-dominated in the sense that $χα-ξγ>0$.
This paper deals with the fully parabolic attraction-repulsion chemotaxis system \begin{align*} u_t=Δu-χ\nabla \cdot (u\nabla v)+ξ\nabla\cdot(u \nabla w), \quad v_t=Δv-v+u, \quad w_t=Δw-w+u, \quad x \in Ω,\ t>0 \end{align*} under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions and initial conditions, where $Ω$ is an open ball in $\mathbb{R}^n$ ($n \ge 3$), $χ, ξ>0$ are constants. When $w=0$, finite-time blow-up in the corresponding Keller-Segel system has already been obtained. However, finite-time blow-up in the above attraction-repulsion chemotaxis system has not yet been established except for the …
In this paper, we study the minimal Keller-Segel model with a logistic source and obtain quantitative and qualitative descriptions of the competition between logistic damping and other ingredient, especially, chemotactic aggregation to guarantee boundedness and convergence. More specifically, we establish how precisely strong a logistic source can prevent blow-up, and then we obtain an explicit relationship between logistic damping and other ingredient, especially, chemotactic aggregation so that convergences are ensured and their respective convergence rates are explicitly calculated out. This paper deals with unbounded solutions to a class of chemotaxis systems. In particular, for a rather general attraction-repulsion model, with nonlinear productions, diffusion, sensitivities and logistic term, we detect Lebesgue spaces where given unbounded solutions blow-up also in the corresponding norms of those spaces; subsequently, estimates for the blow-up time are established. Finally, for a simplified version of the model, some blow-up criteria are proved.
This paper is concerned with the attraction-repulsion chemotaxis system with superlinear logistic degradation, \begin{align*} \begin{cases} u_t = Δu - χ\nabla\cdot(u \nabla v) + ξ\nabla\cdot (u \nabla w) + λu - μu^k, \quad &x \in Ω,\ t>0,\\[1.05mm] 0= Δv + αu - βv, \quad &x \in Ω,\ t>0,\\[1.05mm] 0= Δw + γu - δw, \quad &x \in Ω,\ t>0, \end{cases} \end{align*} under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions, in a ball $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ ($n \ge 3$), with constant parameters $λ\in \mathbb{R}$, $k>1$, $μ, χ, ξ, α, β, γ, δ>0$. Blow-up phenomena in the system have been well investigated in the c…
For a specific choice of the diffusion, the parabolic-elliptic Patlak-Keller-Segel system with non-linear diffusion (also referred to as the quasi-linear Smoluchowski-Poisson equation) exhibits an interesting threshold phenomenon: there is a critical mass $M_c>0$ such that all the solutions with initial data of mass smaller or equal to $M_c$ exist globally while the solution blows up in finite time for a large class of initial data with mass greater than $M_c$. Unlike in space dimension 2, finite mass self-similar blowing-up solutions are shown to exist in space dimension $d?3$.
This paper deals with the fully parabolic chemotaxis system of local sensing in higher dimensions. Despite the striking similarity between this system and the Keller--Segel system, we prove the absence of finite-time blow-up phenomenon in this system even in the supercritical case. It means that for any regular initial data, independently of the magnitude of mass, the classical solution exists globally in time in the higher dimensional setting. Moreover, for the exponential decaying motility case, it is established that solutions may blow up at infinite time for any magnitude of mass. In order…
In this paper we study a zero-flux attraction-repulsion che\-mo\-taxis-system. We show that despite any mutual interplay between the repulsive and attractive coefficients from the corresponding chemo-sensitivities, even less any restriction on their own sizes, if the production rate of that chemical signal responsible of the cellular coalescence is sublinear, then any initial data emanate a unique global classical solution, which is as well bounded. Further, in a remark of the manuscript, we also address an open question given in \cite{Viglialoro2019RepulsionAttraction}.
In this paper we consider nonnegative solutions of the following parabolic-elliptic cross-diffusion system \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{array}{l} \begin{aligned} &u_t = Δu - \nabla(u f(|\nabla v|^2 )\nabla v), \\[6pt] &0= Δv -μ+ u , \quad \int_Ωv =0, \ \ μ:= \frac 1 {|Ω|} \int_Ω u dx, \\[6pt] &u(x,0)= u_0(x), \end{aligned} \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} in $Ω\times (0,\infty)$, with $Ω$ a ball in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N\geq 3$ under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions and $f(ξ) = (1+ ξ)^{-α}$, $0<α< \frac{N-2}{2(N-1)}$, which describes gradient-dependent limitation of cross diffusion f…
This paper studies the non-negative solutions of the Keller-Segel model with a nonlocal nonlinear source in a bounded domain. The competition between the aggregation and the nonlocal reaction term is highlighted: when the growth factor is stronger than the dampening effect, with the help of the nonlocal term, the model admits a classical solution which is uniformly bounded. Moreover, when the growth factor is of the same order compared to the dampening effect, the nonlocal nonlinear exponents can prevent the chemotactic collapse. Global existence of classical solutions is shown for an appropri…

In this work, we study dynamic properties of classical solutions to a homogenous Neumann initial-boundary value problem (IBVP) for a two-species and two-stimuli chemotaxis model with/without chemical signalling loop in a 2D bounded and smooth domain. We successfully detect the product of two species masses as a feature to determine boundedness, gradient estimates, blow-up and $W^{j,\infty}(1\leq j\leq 3)$-exponential convergence of classical solutions for the corresponding IBVP. More specifically, we first show generally a smallness on the product of both species masses, thus allowing one spec…

We study the Keller-Segel model of chemotaxis and develop a composite particle-grid numerical method with adaptive time stepping which allows us to accurately resolve singular solutions. The numerical findings (in two dimensions) are then compared with analytical predictions regarding formation and interaction of singularities obtained via analysis of the stochastic differential equations associated with the Keller-Segel model.
We consider a Parabolic-Elliptic system of PDE's with a chemotactic term in a $N$-dimensional unit ball describing the behavior of the density of a biological species "$u$" and a chemical stimulus "$v$". The system includes a nonlinear chemotactic coefficient depending of ``$\nabla v$", i.e. the chemotactic term is given in the form $$- div (χu |\nabla v|^{p-2} \nabla v), \qquad \mbox{ for } \ p \in ( \frac{N}{N-1},2), \qquad N >2 $$ for a positive constant $χ$ when $v$ satisfies the poisson equation $$- Δv = u - \frac{1}{|Ω|} \int_Ω u_0dx.$$ We study the radially symmetric solutions under the…

We study the chemotaxis model $\partial$ t u = div($\nabla$u -- u$\nabla$w) + $θ$v -- u in (0, $\infty$) x $Ω$, $\partial$ t v = u -- $θ$v in (0, $\infty$) x $Ω$, $\partial$ t w = D$Δ$w -- $α$w + v in (0, $\infty$) x $Ω$, with no-flux boundary conditions in a bounded and smooth domain $Ω$ $\subset$ R 2 , where u and v represent the densities of subpopulations of moving and static individuals of some species, respectively, and w the concentration of a chemoattractant. We prove that, in an appropriate functional setting, all solutions exist globally in time. Moreover, we establish the existence …
The aim of this paper is to analyze a model for chemotaxis based on a local sensing mechanism instead of the gradient sensing mechanism used in the celebrated minimal Keller-Segel model. The model we study has the same entropy as the minimal Keller-Segel model, but a different dynamics to minimize this entropy. Consequently, the conditions on the mass for the existence of stationary solutions or blow-up are the same, however we make the interesting observation that with the local sensing mechanism the blow-up in the case of supercritical mass is delayed to infinite time. Our observation is mad…
This paper deals with a lower bound for the blow-up time for solutions of the fully parabolic chemotaxis system \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} u_t=\nabla \cdot [(u+α)^{m_1-1} \nabla u-χu(u+α)^{m_2-2} \nabla v] & {\rm in} \; Ω\times (0,T), \\[1mm] v_t=Δv-v+u & {\rm in} \; Ω\times (0,T) \end{cases} \end{equation*} under Neumann boundary conditions and initial conditions, where $Ω$ is a general bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with smooth boundary, $α>0$, $χ>0$, $m_1, m_2 \in \mathbb{R}$ and $T>0$. A sharp criterion and complete classification of global-in-time solutions and finite time blow-up of solutions to a chemotaxis system in supercritical dimensions
This paper deals with the quasilinear attraction-repulsion chemotaxis system \begin{align*} \begin{cases} u_t=\nabla\cdot \big((u+1)^{m-1}\nabla u -χu(u+1)^{p-2}\nabla v +ξu(u+1)^{q-2}\nabla w\big) +f(u), \\[1.05mm] 0=Δv+αu-βv, \\[1.05mm] 0=Δw+γu-δw \end{cases} \end{align*} in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ ($n \in \mathbb{N}$) with smooth boundary $\partialΩ$, where $m, p, q \in \mathbb{R}$, $χ, ξ, α, β, γ, δ>0$ are constants. Moreover, it is supposed that the function $f$ satisfies $f(u)\equiv0$ in the study of boundedness, whereas, when considering blow-up, it is assumed that $m>0…
The goal of this paper is to exhibit a critical mass phenomenon occuring in a model for cell self-organization via chemotaxis. The very well known dichotomy arising in the behavior of the macroscopic Keller-Segel system is derived at the kinetic level, being closer to microscopic features. Indeed, under the assumption of spherical symmetry, we prove that solutions with initial data of large mass blow-up in finite time, whereas solutions with initial data of small mass do not. Blow-up is the consequence of a virial identity and the existence part is derived from a comparison argument. Spherical…
This paper is devoted to the analysis of non-negative solutions for the chemotaxis model with nonlocal source in bounded domain. The qualitative behavior of solutions is determined by the nonlinearity from the aggregation and the reaction. The nonlocal nonlinear Fisher-KPP reaction helps preventing blow-up phenomena in chemotaxis system. For appropriately chosen exponents, the global existence of classical solutions is proved with arbitrary initial data, where a modified Moser-Alikakos iteration method plays a key role in the a priori estimates.
We consider the parabolic-elliptic model for the chemotaxis with fractional (anomalous) diffusion. Global-in-time solutions are constructed under (nearly) optimal assumptions on the size of radial initial data. Moreover, criteria for blowup of radial solutions in terms of suitable Morrey spaces norms are derived.
This paper deals with the two-species chemotaxis-competition models \begin{align*} \begin{cases} u_t = d_1 Δu - χ_1 \nabla \cdot (u \nabla w) + μ_1 u (1- u^{κ_1-1} - a_1 v^{λ_1-1}), &\quad x \in Ω,\ t>0,\\ % v_t = d_2 Δv - χ_2 \nabla \cdot (v \nabla w) + μ_2 v (1- a_2 u^{λ_2-1} - v^{κ_2-1}), &\quad x \in Ω,\ t>0,\\ % 0 = d_3 Δw + αu + βv - h(u,v,w), &\quad x \in Ω,\ t>0, \end{cases} \end{align*} where $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ $(n\ge2)$ is a bounded domain with smooth boundary, and $h=γw$ or $h=\frac{1}{|Ω|}\int_Ω(αu+ βv)\,dx$. In the case that $κ_1=λ_1=κ_2=λ_2=2$ and $h=γw$, it is known that sm…
The existence and nonexistence of global in time solutions is studied for a class of equations generalizing the chemotaxis model of Keller and Segel. These equations involve Lévy diffusion operators and general potential type nonlinear terms.
We study radial solutions in a ball of $\mathbb{R}^N$ of a semilinear, parabolic-elliptic Patlak-Keller-Segel system with a nonlinear sensitivity involving a critical power. For $N = 2$, the latter reduces to the classical linear model, well-known for its critical mass $8π$. We show that a critical mass phenomenon also occurs for $N \geq 3$, but with a strongly different qualitative behaviour. More precisely, if the total mass of cells is smaller or equal to the critical mass M, then the cell density converges to a regular steady state with support strictly inside the ball as time goes to infi…
The hydrodynamic limit of a one dimensional kinetic model describing chemotaxis is investigated. The limit system is a conservation law coupled to an elliptic problem for which the macroscopic velocity is possibly discontinuous. Therefore, we need to work with measure-valued densities. After recalling a blow-up result in finite time of regular solutions for the hydrodynamic model, we establish a convergence result of the solutions of the kinetic model towards solutions of a problem limit defined thanks to the flux. Numerical simulations illustrate this convergence result.
We consider two dimensional Keller-Segel equations coupled with the Navier-Stokes equations modelled by Tuval et al.[32]. Assuming that the chemotactic sensitivity and oxygen consumption rate are nondecreasing and differentiable, we prove that there is no blow-up in a finite time for solutions with large initial data to chemotaxis-Navier-Stokes equations in two dimensions. In addition, temporal decays of solutions are shown, as time tends to infinity.
This paper aims at providing a first step toward a qualitative theory for a new class of chemotaxis models derived from the celebrated Keller-Segel system, with the main novelty being that diffusion is nonlinear with flux delimiter features. More precisely, as a prototypical representative of this class we study radially symmetric solutions of the parabolic-elliptic system (see the text). Under the initial condition $u|_{t=0}=u_0>0$ and no-flux boundary conditions in balls $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, where $χ>0$ and $μ:=\frac{1}{|Ω|} \int_Ωu_0$.\abs The main results assert the existence of a uniqu…
