The goal of this paper is to exhibit a critical mass phenomenon occuring in a model for cell self-organization via chemotaxis. The very well known dichotomy arising in the behavior of the macroscopic Keller-Segel system is derived at the kinetic level, being closer to microscopic features. Indeed, under the assumption of spherical symmetry, we prove that solutions with initial data of large mass blow-up in finite time, whereas solutions with initial data of small mass do not. Blow-up is the consequence of a virial identity and the existence part is derived from a comparison argument. Spherical symmetry is crucial within the two approaches. We also briefly investigate the drift-diffusion limit of such a kinetic model. We recover partially at the limit the Keller-Segel criterion for blow-up, thus arguing in favour of a global link between the two models.
In this work, we rigorously study chemotaxis effect versus haptotaxis effect on boundedness, blow-up and asymptotical behavior of solutions for a combined chemotaxis-haptotaxis model in 2D settings. It is well-known that the corresponding Keller-Segel chemotaxis-only model possesses a striking feature of critical mass blow-up phenomenon, namely, subcritical mass ensures boundedness, whereas, supercritical mass induces the existence of blow-ups. Herein, we show that this critical mass blow-up phenomenon stays almost the same in the full chemotaxis-haptotaxis model. For negligibility of haptotax…
This work considers a chemotaxis system for multi-species that includes birth or death rate terms, which implies no mass preservation of the populations. We aim to show the convergence to a $L^{\infty}\ -\ $weak solutions, that is local in time, of the JKO - scheme arising from the Optimal Transport Theory, in the spirit of [35,14]. Currently, $L^{\infty}$ solutions have shown to be important in order to get uniqueness. Since death rate case does not ensure global solutions, for arbitrary initial data, in this framework, it could be interest to analyze the Blowing-up phenomenon of this system.…
It is well-known that the Neumann initial-boundary value problem for the minimal-chemotaxis-logistic system in a 2D bounded smooth domain has no blow-up for any choice of parameters. Here, for a large class of kinetic terms including sub-logistic sources, we show that the corresponding 2D Neumann initial-boundary value problems do not possess any blow-up. This illustrates a new phenomenon that even a class of sub-logistic sources can prevent blow-up for the 2D problem, indicating that logistic damping is not the weakest damping to guarantee uniform-in-time boundedness for the 2D minimal Keller…
In this paper, we study the initial-boundary value problem and its asymptotic behavior for a repulsive chemotaxis model with logarithmic sensitivity and logistic growth. We establish global well-posedness of strong solutions for large initial data with Neumann boundary conditions and, moreover, establish the qualitative result that both the population density and chemical concentration asymptotically converge to constant states with the population density specifically converging to its carrying capacity. We additionally prove that the vanishing chemical diffusivity limit holds in this regime. …
This paper deals with the fully parabolic chemotaxis system of local sensing in higher dimensions. Despite the striking similarity between this system and the Keller--Segel system, we prove the absence of finite-time blow-up phenomenon in this system even in the supercritical case. It means that for any regular initial data, independently of the magnitude of mass, the classical solution exists globally in time in the higher dimensional setting. Moreover, for the exponential decaying motility case, it is established that solutions may blow up at infinite time for any magnitude of mass. In order…
A sharp criterion and complete classification of global-in-time solutions and finite time blow-up of solutions to a chemotaxis system in supercritical dimensions
We study the black hole interiors of spacetimes arising from gravitational collapse in the spherically symmetric Einstein-scalar field setting, and we investigate the precise blow-up rates of curvature and mass at the spacelike singularity near timelike infinity. We show in particular that the Kretschmann scalar blows up faster than in the Schwarzschild setting, due to mass inflation. Moreover, the blow-up rate is not constant and converges to the Schwarzschild rate towards timelike infinity and it depends on the precise late-time polynomial behaviour of the scalar field along the event horizo…
Derived from a biophysical model for the motion of a crawling cell, the system \[(*)~\begin{cases}u_t=Δu-\nabla\cdot(u\nabla v)\\0=Δv-kv+u\end{cases}\] is investigated in a finite domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq2$, with $k\geq0$. While a comprehensive literature is available for cases with $(*)$ describing chemotaxis systems and hence being accompanied by homogeneous Neumann-type boundary conditions, the presently considered modeling context, besides yet requiring the flux $\partial_νu-u\partial_νv$ to vanish on $\partialΩ$, inherently involves homogeneous Dirichlet conditions for the at…
We consider the parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel system in three dimensions and higher, corresponding to the mass supercritical case. We construct rigorously a solution which blows up in finite time by having its mass concentrating near a ring that shrinks to a point. In particular, the singularity is of type II, non self-similar. We show the stability of this dynamics among spherically symmetric solutions. In renormalised variables, the solution ressembles a traveling wave imploding at the origin, and this, to our knowledge, is the first stability result for such phenomenon for an evolution PD…
The Neumann initial-boundary problem for the chemotaxis system \begin{align} \label{prob:abstract} \tag{$\star$} \begin{cases} u_t = Δu - \nabla \cdot (u \nabla v) + κ(|x|) u - μ(|x|) u^p, \\ 0 = Δv - \frac{m(t)}{|Ω|} + u, \quad m(t) := \int_Ωu(\cdot, t) \end{cases} \end{align} is studied in a ball $Ω= B_R(0) \subset \mathbb R^2$, $R \gt 0$ for $p \ge 1$ and sufficiently smooth functions $κ, μ: [0, R] \rightarrow [0, \infty)$. We prove that whenever $μ', -κ' \ge 0$ as well as $μ(s) \le μ_1 s^{2p-2}$ for all $s \in [0, R]$ and some $μ_1 \gt 0$ then for all $m_0 \gt 8 π$ there exists $u_0 \in C^…
