Following ideas of Lurie, we give in this article a general construction of equivariant elliptic cohomology without restriction to characteristic zero. Specializing to the universal elliptic curve we obtain in particular equivariant spectra of topological modular forms. We compute the fixed points of these spectra for the circle group and more generally for tori.
In this paper, we produce a cellular motivic spectrum of motivic modular forms over $\R$ and $\C$, answering positively to a conjecture of Dan Isaksen. This spectrum is constructed to have the appropriate cohomology, as a module over the relevant motivic Steenrod algebra. We first produce a $\G$-equivariant version of this spectrum, and then use a machinery to construct a motivic spectrum from an equivariant one. We believe that this machinery will be of independent interest.
We compute the homotopy groups of the $C_2$ fixed points of equivariant topological modular forms at the prime $2$ using the descent spectral sequence. We then show that as a $\mathrm{TMF}$-module, it is isomorphic to the tensor product of $\mathrm{TMF}$ with an explicit finite cell complex.
We identify the equivariant structure of the filtered pieces of the motivic filtration defined by Bhatt, Morrow and Scholze on the topological Hochschild cohomology spectrum of polynomial algebras over $\mathbb{F}_p$.
We define and study an equivariant version of Farber's topological complexity for spaces with a given compact group action. This is a special case of the equivariant sectional category of an equivariant map, also defined in this paper. The relationship of these invariants with the equivariant Lusternik-Schnirelmann category is given. Several examples and computations serve to highlight the similarities and differences with the non-equivariant case. We also indicate how the equivariant topological complexity can be used to give estimates of the non-equivariant topological complexity.
This paper explores topological complexity in the finite equivariant setting. We first define and study an equivariant version of Tanaka's combinatorial complexity for finite topological spaces. We explore the relationships between this invariant and several others already discussed in the literature: Farber's topological complexity, Tanaka's combinatorial complexity, and Colman-Grant's equivariant Lusternik-Schnirelmann category. We find bounds for equivariant combinatorial complexity and for the necessary lengths of equivariant combinatorial motion plannings. We show that the equivariant top…
In this paper we introduce the concepts of higher equivariant and invariant topological complexity; and study their properties. Then we compare them with equivariant LS-category. We give lower and upper bounds for these new invariants. We compute some of these invariants for moment angle complexes.
For a compact Lie group G, we use G-equivariant Poincaré duality for ordinary RO(G)-graded homology to define an equivariant intersection product, the dual of the equivariant cup product. Using this, we give a homological construction of the equivariant Lefschetz number and a simple proof of the equivariant Lefschetz fixed point theorem. With similar techniques, an equivariant Fuller index with values in the rationalized Burnside ring is constructed.
The aim of this article is to review different generalizations of the the notion of topological complexity to the equivariant setting. In particular, we review the relation (or non-relation) between these notions and the topological complexity of the quotient space and the topological complexity of the fixed point sets. We give examples of calculations and stress the question: When the action is free, do we recover the topological complexity of the quotient?
Let $M$ be a covariant coefficient system for a finite group $G$. In this paper we analyze several topological abelian groups, some of them new, whose homotopy groups are isomorphic to the Bredon-Illman $G$-equivariant homology theory with coefficients in $M$. We call these groups equivariant Dold-Thom topological groups and we show that they are unique up to homotopy. We use one of the new groups to prove that the Bredon-Illman homology satisfies the infinite-wedge axiom and to make some calculations of the 0th equivariant homology.
We prove an upper bound of higher topological complexity $TC_n(X)$ using higher $\mathcal{D}$-topological complexity $TC_n^{\mathcal{D}}(X)$ of a space $X$. An intermediate invariant $\widetilde{TC}_n(X)$ is used in the proof. We interpret this invariant $\widetilde{TC}_n(X)$ as higher analogue of strongly equivariant topological complexity of the universal cover of $\widetilde{X}$ with the action of the fundamental group of $X$.
We prove equivariant versions of the Beilinson-Lichtenbaum conjecture for Bredon motivic cohomology of smooth complex and real varieties with an action of the group of order two. This identifies equivariant motivic and topological invariants in a large range of degrees.
We use the homotopy invariance of equivariant principal bundles to prove that the equivariant ${\mathcal A}$-category of Clapp and Puppe is invariant under Morita equivalence. As a corollary, we obtain that both the equivariant Lusternik-Schnirelmann category of a group action and the invariant topological complexity are invariant under Morita equivalence. This allows a definition of topological complexity for orbifolds.
We give a classification of open equivariant topological conformal field theories in terms of Calabi-Yau $A_\infty$-categories endowed with a group action.
We present a version of the equivariant gradient degree defined for equivariant gradient perturbations of an equivariant unbounded self-adjoint operator with purely discrete spectrum in Hilbert space. Two possible applications are discussed.
For $G$ a finite group, we prove in dimension 2 that there is a monoidal equivalence between the category of $G$-equivariant topological quantum field theories and the category of $G$-Frobenius algebras, this was proved by G. Moore and G. Segal. This work consists to give, in more detail, a proof of this result.
We show that for any cohomogeneity one continuous action of a compact connected Lie group $G$ on a closed topological manifold the equivariant cohomology equipped with its canonical $H^*(BG)$-module structure is Cohen-Macaulay. The proof relies on the structure theorem for these actions recently obtained by Galaz-Garcia and Zarei. We generalize in this way our previous result concerning smooth actions.
Using equivariant obstruction theory we construct equivariant maps from certain classifying spaces to representation spheres for cyclic groups, product of elementary Abelian groups and dihedral groups. Restricting them to finite skeleta constructs equivariant maps between spaces which are related to the topological Tverberg conjecture. This answers negatively a question of Özaydin posed in relation to weaker versions of the same conjecture. Further, it also has consequences for Borsuk-Ulam properties of representations of cyclic and dihedral groups.
This is the companion article to the Bourbaki talk of the same name given in March 2009. The main theme of the talk and the article is to explain the interplay between homotopy theory and algebraic geometry through the Hopkins-Miller-Lurie theorem on topological modular forms, from which we learn that the Deligne-Mumford moduli stack for elliptic curves is canonically realized as an object in derived algebraic geometry.
We investigate equivariant and invariant topological complexity of spheres endowed with smooth non-free actions of cyclic groups of prime order. We prove that semilinear $\mathbb{Z}/p$-spheres have both invariants either $2$ or $3$ and calculate exact values in all but two cases for linear actions. On the other hand, we exhibit examples which show that these invariants can be arbitrarily high in the class of smooth $\mathbb{Z}/p$-spheres.
Twisted topological Hochschild homology of $C_n$-equivariant spectra was introduced by Angeltveit, Blumberg, Gerhardt, Hill, Lawson, and Mandell, building on the work of Hill, Hopkins, and Ravenel on norms in equivariant homotopy theory. In this paper we introduce tools for computing twisted THH, which we apply to computations for Thom spectra, Eilenberg-MacLane spectra, and the real bordism spectrum $MU_{\mathbb{R}}$. In particular, we construct an equivariant version of the Bökstedt spectral sequence, the formulation of which requires further development of the Hochschild homology of Green f…
We present a new approach to equivariant version of the topological complexity, called a symmetric topological complexity. It seems that the presented approach is more adequate for the analysis of an impact of symmetry on the the motion planning algoritm than the one introduced and studied by Colman and Grant. We show many bounds for the symmetric topological complexity comparing it with already known invariants and prove that in the case of a free action it is equal to the Farber's topological complexity of the orbit space. We define the Whitehead version of it.
Given a simple, simply connected compact Lie group G, let M be a G-space. We describe the quantization of the category of positive energy representations of the loop group of G at a given level and parametrized over the loop space LM. This procedure is described in terms of dominant K-theory of the loop group evaluated on the phase space given by the tangent bundle of basic gauge fields about a circle (parametrized over LM and with gauge symmetries given by the loop group LG). As such, our construction gives rise to a (categorical) BV-BRST type quantization for families of rational 2d CFTs wit…
We present a version of higher Hochschild homology for spaces equipped with principal bundles for a structure group $G$. As coefficients, we allow $E_\infty$-algebras with $G$-action. For this homology theory, we establish an equivariant version of excision and prove that it extends to an equivariant topological field theory with values in the $(\infty,1)$-category of cospans of $E_\infty$-algebras.
We construct a genuine $G$-equivariant extension of factorization homology for $G$ a finite group, assigning a genuine $G$-spectrum to a manifold with $G$-action. We show that $G$-factorization homology is compatible with Hill-Hopkins-Ravenel norms and satisfies equivariant $\otimes$-excision. Following Ayala-Francis we prove an axiomatic characterization of genuine $G$-factorization homology. Applications include a description of real topological Hochschild homology and relative topological Hochschild homology of $C_n$-rings using genuine $G$-factorization homology.
Torus orbifolds are topological generalization of symplectic toric orbifolds. We give a construction of smooth orbifolds with torus actions whose boundary is a disjoint union of torus orbifolds using toric topological method. As a result, we show that any orientable locally standard torus orbifold is equivariantly cobordant to some copies of orbifold complex projective spaces. We also discuss some further equivariant cobordism results including the cases when torus orbifolds are actually torus manifolds.
We introduce and compare two approaches to equivariant homotopy theory in a topological or ordinary Quillen model category. For the topological model category of spaces, we generalize Piacenza's result that the categories of topological presheaves indexed by the orbit category of a fixed topological group $G$ and the category of $G$-spaces can be endowed with Quillen equivalent model category structures. We prove an analogous result for any cofibrantly generated model category and discrete group $G$, under certain conditions on the fixed point functors of the subgroups of $G$. These conditions…
The present article studies decompositions of vector bundles on the moduli stack of elliptic curves that are pushforwards of vector bundles on moduli of elliptic curves with level structure. These imply decomposition results for rings of modular forms and also for topological modular forms. We give explicit formulas for these decompositions and also apply them to equivariant topological modular forms. Moreover, we study the dualizing sheaf on $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_1(n)$ and characterize the numbers $n$ such that $Tmf_1(n)$ is Anderson self-dual.
Let $φ$ and $φ'$ be two homotopic actions of the topological group $G$ on the topological space $X$. To an object $A$ in the $G$-equivariant derived category $D_φ(X)$ of $X$ relative to the action $φ$ we associate an object $A'$ of category $D_{φ'}(X)$, such that the corresponding $G$-equivariant compactly supported cohomologies $H_{G,c}(X,\,A)$ and $H_{G,c}(X,\,A')$ are isomorphic. When $G$ is a Lie group and $X$ is a subanalytic space, we prove that the $G$-equivariant cohomologies $H_{G}(X,\,A)$ and $H_{G}(X,\,A')$ are also isomorphic.
Topological modular forms with level structure were introduced in full generality by Hill and Lawson. We show that these decompose additively in many cases into a few simple pieces and give an application to equivariant $TMF$. Furthermore, we show which $Tmf_1(n)$ are self-Anderson dual up to a shift, both with and without their natural $C_2$-action.
We build a connection between topology of smooth 4-manifolds and the theory of topological modular forms by considering topologically twisted compactification of 6d (1,0) theories on 4-manifolds with flavor symmetry backgrounds. The effective 2d theory has (0,1) supersymmetry and, possibly, a residual flavor symmetry. The equivariant topological Witten genus of this 2d theory then produces a new invariant of the 4-manifold equipped with a principle bundle, valued in the ring of equivariant weakly holomorphic (topological) modular forms. We describe basic properties of this map and present a fe…
This article is a brief survey of the theory of topological modular forms (TMF) and the theory of topological automorphic forms (TAF). It will be a chapter in forthcoming "Handbook of Homotopy Theory" edited by Haynes Miller.
The non-equivariant topology of Stiefel manifolds has been studied extensively, culminating in a result of Miller demonstrating that a Stiefel manifold splits stably to a wedge of Thom spaces over Grassmannians. Equivariantly, one can consider spaces of isometries between representations as an analogue to Stiefel manifolds. This concept, however, yields a different theory to the non-equivariant case. We first construct a variation on the theory of the functional calculus before studying the homotopy-theoretic properties of this theory. This allows us to construct the main result; a natural tow…
We discuss proofs of local cohomology theorems for topological modular forms, based on Mahowald-Rezk duality and on Gorenstein duality, and then make the associated local cohomology spectral sequences explicit, including their differential patterns and hidden extensions.
Group equivariant operators are playing a more and more relevant role in machine learning and topological data analysis. In this paper we present some new results concerning the construction of $G$-equivariant non-expansive operators (GENEOs) from a space $\varPhi$ of real-valued bounded continuous functions on a topological space $X$ to $\varPhi$ itself. The space $\varPhi$ represents our set of data, while $G$ is a subgroup of the group of all self-homeomorphisms of $X$, representing the invariance we are interested in.
Extending our method for investigating Real cobordism (which was recently used by Hill, Hopkins and Ravenel in their solution of the Kervaire invariant 1 problem), we investigate the $RO(G)$-graded homotopy groups of a (non-complete) $\Z/2\times \Z/2$-equivariant spectrum called topological Hermitian cobordism. The methods of this paper may be useful in computing the homotopy groups of other $G$-equivariant spectra where $G\neq \Z/2$.
We describe a new link between the theory of topological modular forms and representations of vertex operator algebras obtained by certain lattices. The construction is motivated by the arithmetic Whitehead tower of the orthogonal groups. The tower discloses the role of codes in representation theory.
We compute the $RO(A)$-graded coefficients of $A$-equivariant complex and real topological $K$-theory for $A$ a finite elementary abelian $2$-group, together with all products, transfers, restrictions, power operations, and Adams operations.
For $G$ a finite group, we show that functions on fields for the 2-dimensional supersymmetric sigma model with background $G$-symmetry determine cocycles for complex analytic $G$-equivariant elliptic cohomology. Similar structures in supersymmetric mechanics determine cocycles for equivariant K-theory with complex coefficients. The path integral for gauge theory with a finite group constructs wrong-way maps associated to group homomorphisms. When applied to an inclusion of groups, we obtain the induced character formula of Hopkins, Kuhn, and Ravenel. For the homomorphism $G\to *$ we obtain Vaf…
Shadows for bicategories, defined by Ponto, provide a useful framework that generalizes classical and topological Hochschild homology. In this paper, we define Hochschild-type invariants for monoids in a symmetric monoidal, simplicial model category $\mathsf V$, as well as for small $\mathsf V$-categories. We show that each of these constructions extends to a shadow on an appropriate bicategory, which implies in particular that they are Morita invariant. We also define a generalized theory of Hochschild homology twisted by an automorphism and show that it is Morita invariant. Hochschild homolo…
Using the methods of Ando-Hopkins-Rezk, we describe the characteristic series arising from E-infinity genera valued in topological modular forms with level structure. We give examples of such series for tmf_0(N) and show that the Ochanine genus comes from an E-infinity ring map. We also show that, away from 6, certain tmf orientations of String cobordism descend to orientations of Spin cobordism.
